I really wanted to like this place, but the experience ended up being pretty disappointing. First, when our third friend arrived and we asked to move from a table for two to a table for three, the staff explicitly told us we had to order more food and drinks in order to switch tables -- even though we had already ordered. It didn't feel accommodating, and honestly made us feel unwelcome. I completely understand minimums for large groups, but applying that kind of pressure when just one extra person joins felt unnecessary. Second, the food was just not good. My friend ordered quesadilla was inexpensive and edible, but that's about the best I can say -- definitely nothing I'd come back for. A craving for margaritas led us here, a no-frills Mexican spot with diner seating and a bar. We sat in a booth and enjoyed the strong AC in July. Misleading happy hour on their menu. Says 3-5pm daily, but when we went to order during that time on Saturday we were informed that it wasn't happy hour and we had to order full price. Midtown can be a food dessert. My friend was djing MOMA and we needed come vegan options. Everything was over priced and stuffy or heavy and fast food in the area. Imagine my surprise when I noticed La Esquina opened a new location on 55th. Get outta town! Our savior! Tons of veggie and fish options for your truly. There was 6 of us on a Friday night at prime time and we snagged the perfect table upstairs. It was intimate and round so everyone could see each other. I loved it. It felt like it was waiting for us to arrive. I couldn't be happier with the service and the food. My vegan friends loved their cauliflower tacos. We devoured the guac and chips. I was smitten with my shrimp tacos and only $11.50 for 2. My spicy "Daisy" margarita hit the spot. Thanks to our lovely waitress for taking care of us. Late night walkabout landed on 5 stars worth of: Queso dip with tons of flavor and chunks of carnitas. Chips freshly fried and Guac on the side. Two very nice tacos with fresh pressed corn tortilla's and perfectly topped with pickled onions & cilantro. Finished every bite with a simple margarita over ice and done old school with just lime juice and a dash of agavé syrup. Go for the salted rim it blends all the food nicely. I don't give many 5 stars out but if you want Mexican food in NYC the original La Esquina is the best setting but this diner style up norté in Manhattan does the trick. read more

I went to La Esquina on a Sunday evening a couple of weeks ago. I'll start by saying that the margarita pitchers were great, I tried the blood orange as well as the passionfruit. Unfortunately, the service was horrible. It was very clear that they were understaffed and my group could not have been nicer, but it took us an hour to get the second margarita pitcher. I asked multiple times and he said that it was coming. I also ordered a taco which I did not recieve. Luckily we were given a discount on everything, but I still thought this was insane. I do want to come back and I hope to have a better expirence because it was very cute in there and the marg was really good, but service was just so bad. read more

The people that work here are super nice, the place is cute and cozy, the menu has a good variety, tacos and the salads are good. I always crave a margarita when i;m close by. The elote was awesome. Have never tried that before. Has a little bitter taste at the root. Love the cheese and spice to it. Super tasty! Have only seen these from Nacho Libre GET THAT CORN OUTTA MY FACE! Tacos were average and slightly overpriced for two tacos ($11.50). Better more decorated tacos for cheaper are at Los Tacos #1. We also got the shrimp tacos and they had a flavorful sauce that my girlfriend loved. I feel my tacos were just a lot of meat with no real flavor. LOVE the amount of meat, but it didn't have Guac or peppers or anything else that would be nice to add to the flavor and make it more food for my buck. Nice service. I went to La Esquina around lunch time one Sunday. Aside from the cook, there was one guy running the entire place. He had an entire restaurant of table inside and outside, he was bartending, hosting, running food, etc. I ordered the pollo rostizado and it was exceptional! It's a very cute restaurant as well, but unfortunately due to one poor guy running the place (no fault of his own), the service was a little lackluster. To drink I recommend the mezcalita which is a simple specialty cocktail with mezcal lemon lime and agave. To start I'd get the guac, which is homemade and fresh. This location I had never been to until a few days ago. I have been to the one downtown and on the upper east. This location had a very chill vibe to it. It has one or two other levels. We sat on the lower level. Our waiter was very friendly and took my food allergies into consideration. I was here with out of town family of mine and they also absolutely loved the vibe of the place and the food and drinks. We had chicken tacos, chips and guac and salsa, the awesome corn and some other kinds of tacos. They were blown away on how tasty the corn was. I have had the corn before but it was their first time. Came here after drinking at the Daisy themed bar PHD Terrace so it was very convenient. Relatively small inside but lots of counter/bar type seating good for individuals. My group of 4 went to a table. Service was fine - very quiet staff - no chit chat - it was fine. Food was excellent - downside is that the guac is made in advance so I couldn't ask for no cilantro. For the beef tacos I did get no cilantro. Tacos were excellent. Both items tasted fresh and were yummy. Pretty small portions. Good pricing for the location but relatively expensive for the portion size. 2 tacos was $11.50 - no sides or anything. Guacamole was $15. I decided to still give it a chance though because the interior seemed nice and a great vibe was curated. I ordered the shrimp tacos which were incredible! The flavors were amazing. The sauce really made it. Very tangy. Plus when you add the lime on the side, so goood. My only complaint was the price for the size. They were pretty small tacos, could've gone for a third. We also got the Elote Callejero which was ok. Not super flavorful. The restaurant was very cute. Was located right across from the N subway I got off and wanted a bite to eat and a place to do some work on my laptop. As a native California I figure how can one mess up Mexican food... Ordered the coconut flan and heuvo rancheros. Base of the flan was standard nothing special but hit all the needs. The toasted coconut was stale and didn't go well with the texture of the flan. Would recommend cooking them in a little coconut oil till fully golden brown and crispy. The Heuvos rancheros.... There's to much wrong for me to fix. I say toss it. Egg was so runny I thought it was training for the Boston marathon. I couldn't even wrap up the rest to give to a homeless or someone in need because it might cause salmonella from being so under cooked. Sauce was bland. I looked for salt and there was none around. Best part was the cheese and I doubt it's made in house. The whole dish was underwhelming yet it's sectioned off on their menu like it's a star player. Makes me not hopeful for other items. Also it was messy and difficult to eat. 2 over layer tostada with a raw egg covered in piping hot sauce. How should one proceed? The photo shows how little I ate before I told them I was done. Service didn't ask if I like my food, or why I didn't eat my food, if there was something wrong, if they could bring me anything else. As someone who cooks for other I care if someone isn't eating what I serve them. But maybe they knew it was below pare so wasn't surprised I didn't eat it. Ambiance was very photo ready. Food was well presented. Decorations and decor is what brought me in. And the food had me leave in less then 20mins. And above all the Wi-Fi didn't even work. Your better off grabbing something from the corner deli me working in the library. Cheaper then $28 with no Wi-Fi access. Flan was $9 and heuvo rancheros $17 I left no tip. read more

I know and really like the soho location. This was *not the same. It was totally empty when we went in... the service was really nice! But the food took ages to arrive, even though there was *nobody else there. The chips were **incredibly stale... like almost inedible. The guacamole was brown, tasted really weird and was served in a tiny bowl (for $13) the shrimp in the shrimp tacos hadn't been cleaned and the tortillas hadn't even been warmed up. Food: 9/10. To start I got chips and guac. Chips were ight but the guac was fire. I got the bistec tacos, which were gas. There was plenty of guac leftover so I loaded some up in my tacos, and it made them even better. The only reason for 9 is because it only came with two and I wanted more. Service: 10/10. It wasn't busy and the service was great. They sat us down and were ready to take our order right away. The chips came out within a few minutes and our food after that. They asked if we needed anything else multiple times and were very friendly. Also, when I've gone out to eat in NYC in the past the most annoying thing has been not having enough water. It's summer and I always need more than the waiters give. Luckily, we asked for tap water and they gave us a huge bottle that we could pour ourselves. I drank like 4 glasses and our waiter refilled it without us needing to ask. I also got a beer and they didn't even ID me(I'm over 21). Ambiance:9/10 Reggaeton / throwback music had me boppin in my seat the whole time. Great vibe and a cute little shop with a bar and some TVs. It was very chill and a super casual spot. Great date spot or quick grub spot depending on what your after. Overall:9/10 Didn't see an option for 4.5 and 4 didn't feel right so giving this 5 stars.
