Had a not great experience getting my roots done here (which I've been doing elsewhere for 15+ years so I'm not an idiot and know what it should look like) - I left with ORANGE roots. I was given the option to come back the next week to have it fixed if I "still didn't like it" but to be honest I shouldn't have even been allowed to leave the salon with my hair looking like that. I'd rather go to someone I trust in another state than come back to have it "fixed" by the same person who thought it was ok to charge me $550 for a "dusting" haircut and a shoddy color job. I would have paid a grand just for someone competent at blonde color. Won't be back again. read more

One of the best salon experience I've ever had: beautiful interior space, respectful and kind staff, a sweet, generous owner/hair stylist... all wonderful from the beginning to the end. I wanted to donate my long, strong, healthy hair to Lock of Love. I searched for a hair salon in the city that "fully" supports Locks of Love, and surprisingly enough, Alchemy Space was the only salon that I found that really, truly, fully supports Locks of Love. The salon was beautifully decorated with plants, waterfalls, and wood furniture, creating tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. I waited in a area that had the nice "living room" setting with sofa with an ice cold tea that the receptionist brought with smile. I The owner, Nercy, was really nice and sweet, and listened to what style I wanted. She also explained how the locks would be cut off (since it was my first time donating hair). So, after all was clear, she cut of 10 inches off and I was suddenly lighter and cooler! :-D She then started to style my hair to the shape I wanted, and the result was fantastic! It was actually a bit shorter than I expected, but it looked great regardless. The before and after was drastic since I went from very long hair to really short hair, and even the customers in the salon were all amazed of the change, and all gave me compliments. It has been 2 days since the haircut, and I have been very happy with the haircut. Thanks to Nercy, I will have a cooler Summer, and my hair can be made into a wig for a child out there who really needs it. read more

Nercy is a top-rate stylist! It took me 31 years to get the haircut I've always wanted. 3 times in my life I've gone from having long hair to my butt to a drastic above neck cut. The first time (in high school), I ended up with a tacky, unmanageable bob. The 2nd time (about 8 years ago), it was a boyish and unflattering short shag. FINALLY someone understood what I was going for. Nercy gave me a short and choppy but also chic and fun haircut. She also added some very understated caramel highlights underneath the layers so that they just peek through. I was very scared of cutting off almost a foot of hair but now I have hair that I truly love and a child with cancer will have a wig that they can put better use to. Nercy's great demeanor and confidence in her skills really put me at ease. For once, someone didn't "freak out" when I said I wanted to cut off all of my long, thick hair. Instead, she was excited to sculpt a brand new look for me and immediately started showing me her ideas which perfectly meshed with what I wanted. She also takes the time to show you different methods of managing and styling the new hair. I have always been pretty spazzy about styling my hair, but she explained several ways of doing it (both curly and straight) that are simple and perfectly do-able for my on-the-go schedule. I was apprehensive about spending so much but it was absolutely worth it. She also had me in and out in less than 2 hours on a Friday night. That was due to her skill and not because she was rushing. Her staff is also very professional and friendly. You won't find any NYC Hair Snobs here. The receptionist immediately made me feel welcomed, took my coat and offered me a glass of wine or tea. Nercy's assistants made sure I was comfortable, brought me magazines and washed my hair with strong, soothing fingers. Maria left me with awful colored hair. I simply asked for grey dye (without touching my roots) and she said would PROBABLY need two processes even though my hair was already as light as could be from bleaching. After I specifically said to put in dye, she later admit to actually put in grey toner that was a lighter shade than my hair. She intentionally messed up and then tried to up-sell me by expecting me to buy another process. She didn't even put my hair under heat for the color to set in until I asked!! After catching her admission that she in fact did not do what I wanted, I said, "Wait a minute I asked for permanent dye NOT toner." She responded with "permanent dye IS toner". I am not a fool. The other stylists at the salon looked away because they could clearly see how embarrassing my color was. To add insult to injury, Maria offered to bribe me in exchange for not leaving a bad review. Weeks later, she tells me she was too busy to send it but will ASAP. Now she claims to have mailed me a check but still nothing in my mail box. What a trickster!! I went to another hair dresser after Maria left me with blotchy color that looked slightly blue. The new hair dresser gave me the exact color I wanted in one step and used permanent dye NOT toner. The salon is beautiful and the amenities are nice but AVOID MARIA!! She is very deceptive, tries to sell you more than needed and does not listen to the customer. read more

Nercy, the owner, is such a skilled stylist and a warm, gracious person. She listened to my needs (short, low maintenance hair cut) but also made great suggestions. For example, she cut my hair in such a way that my hair would curl inwards naturally so that I wouldn't have to blow dry it every morning to create that inward curl. I have been doing my hair with Maria Felix for over 5 years. She used to work at Salon O2 and moved to Alchemy Space in 2016. Maria is a talented colorist with a great eye for what compliments my skin tone and face shape. Her highlighting technique is fantastic and the results always look very natural. She uses gentle products and is generally very knowledgeable about hair. I usually get tons of compliments after I get my hair done. I have never left a review for anything in my life but I have also never been so horrified by a hair stylist's attitude and lack of skills. DO NOT go here if you care about your hair. My beautiful long hair is now damaged from careless "balayage" bleaching (despite a SURPRISE extra $30 charge for Olaplex add on), the stylist insisted on using a "gloss" (another surprise $50 charge!) which she claims does the same thing as a toner (false), and the cut is completely uneven and choppy with zero movement. I wanted to try a new salon and branch out and truly wish I never had. I am now forced to spend upwards of $500 getting my hair fixed by my original salon. I gave the benefit of the doubt and went back a couple of days after my initial appointment to have a toner applied in hopes that would remedy the new orange brassy tones in my hair from the improper balayage job, and I was met with an argumentative and demeaning attitude. The stylist told me repeatedly she didn't know what I was talking about, thought the hair looked great, and she suggested I get MORE highlights and that would hide the orange. That is not a solution for someone who wants (and initially had) very natural balayage highlights with natural light brown hair showing for at least 5-6 inches from the root. I have been getting my hair done long enough to know what specifically to ask for. COOL and ASHY does not in any way shape or form mean yellow or orange or warm. A simple ASH toner applied after the hair is lifted with bleach gets the result. NOT a gloss, which just coats the cuticle of the hair and adds shine. I left in tears a for second time with the same unchanged orange hair as the first time I left. Save your hair, your time, and your money and go somewhere else. read more

I found Alchemy Space when searching for a place that does Locks of Love donations, and little did I know when booking my appointment how good of a decision it was to choose this salon! Nercy only charges $20 for the entire wash, cut, and styling if you're donating to Locks of Love, which is an exceptional deal especially considering that I got my hair done with care and skill at a very chic NYC salon. She is not only an incredible hair stylist, but also a very kind, warm, and compassionate person. Nercy used to do all Locks of Love cuts for free, which is so generous, but understandably started charging the small fee of $20 when a lot of Locks of Love customers came in (since she is one of the only salons in the city that offers the service) to pay for shipping the hair. She also runs a new foundation to empower young women. It was so nice to speak with Nercy as she skillfully cut and styled my hair; I ended up with great conversation and a great 'do at the end that made me feel amazing! read more

I came here to donate my hair to Locks of Love. My family and I were greeted and offered refreshments! The atmosphere was very relaxed and professional. After changing into a comfy robe, I had my hair washed and then braided. Then it was goodbye hair! Nercy did a very nice job deciding on a hairstyle as I was not sure what I wanted. I got a haircut the day before going to Alchemy and I HATED IT! It was dated and flat, not what I had asked the stylist. The next day I was so depressed about my hair that I started researching for salons near my job. I found Arturo Salon and decided to just walk in...well, Arturo wasn't at the salon and the other stylist (probably seeing how emotional I was) sent me to Alchemy. The fellow who owns a supply store in the same building told me about this new place on the 7 th fl so I thought I'd give it a try. I could see by the way she( Nercy) worked that she was very relaxed and confident. She understands ( at least with me) that less is sometimes more and that to work successfully with my type of hair you should keep it simple, by following her plan I got one of the best haircuts I've had in years. I never write reviews but Nercy (the owner) is absolutely phenomenal. I called in the morning and asked for a last minute appointment and they booked me just a few hours later. My appointment was for hair donation (Locks of Love), they have a package deal if you're donating, it comes with shampoo, conditioner, cut, and style. My hair was extremely long and I needed a change. First off I walked in and they hung my jacket up and offered me something to drink, instant comfort. The large windows in the space allowed for the salon to be flooded with daylight, it's such a beautiful salon. The owners cute little white dog walked around and I instantly fell in love, he was so friendly and adorable. This is by far the best salon I've been to .
