Without giving it a try, I had already made up my mind that I wouldn't like this supermarket. I had heard that you had to bag your own food. And even worse, the only way to obtain a shopping cart was with a quarter deposit. Then you had to return the cart to get your money back. What a bummer!! I like service with a smile, preferably the great stores with hardwood floors, classical music & clerks that take your food choices out of the cart for you. Even the German blood running through my veins, complements of my great grandmother, hadn't temped me to venture into another part of town to sample the store's selections. What a surprise it was to see an Aldi's sign at a construction site next to my rheumatologist on First Colonial Road. Stopping by the infusion room on my way out I chatted with someone and mentioned "Did you see the Aldi's being built next door?" She had but said it wasn't nearly as big as the one on Shore Drive. Shore Drive..... Where? Bayside Shopping Center was the answer, almost in walking distance from my house. Well.... actually in walking distance for the more able bodied I stopped on my way home. The store was spacious with wide aisles. It was clean and brightly lit. The shopping center's parking is convenient and plentiful. I decided to walk every aisle. Their selection was limited. But I was delighted to find some organic veggies for an unbelievable price. They even had my baby arugula and spinach mix. The paper goods seemed to be priced at a "come hither" level. Milk prices were similar to other chain stores. I saw no prepared "ready to cook" dishes that I love to purchase from the high end grocers. Bringing my own bags won't be a problem. I carry an ample supple in my vehicles all the time. Save the planet!! Plus they are much easier to carry into the house than plastic or paper. The only stumbling block left was how the carts worked. I saw no place to pay or return. So I stood and watched a lady take a cart. She explained exactly how it worked. Put a quarter in a slot in the cart itself. When you push the cart back into the line of carts and reattach the chain, it returns your quarter. I will return for salad fixings and paper goods. And I'll make a slower pass down the aisles for more bargain items. It won't be my "go to" store. But it is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.

When you return it you will get that quarter back so I suggest you keep that silver piece in a special place in your car.

The event included food trucks and a variety of vendors. My friend and I grabbed some BBQ from S&J Catering and it was delicious. We also grabbed donuts from Klassic Donuts and Glazed & Infuzed as well, which were very tasty. As we walked through the different shops, I absolutely loved all the fresh local, produce that was available. One of the shops offered a variety of jarred items and sauces so I purchased Crab Salsa and Spicy Pickled Okra. Both were very good and I definitely need to go back and get more! I absolute love supporting local businesses and I will definitely be returning very soon! Everyone was very nice and I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Overall, I've had consistently great experiences, which is why I wanted to share both the positives and one area that could use some attention. The Fresh Market has one of the best meat counters around. Their filet mignon is my go-to purchase, and it's always been outstanding. Their produce is consistently fresh, and I also love their bakery. They regularly offer unique seasonal and specialty baked goods that are always worth trying. Today, I decided to order their fresh bruschetta because it's not something many stores carry. I was excited to try it, but unfortunately, when it arrived, it didn't look fresh at all. Even though the container is dated to expire tomorrow, it had a milky appearance that made it look unappetizing and, in my opinion, not safe to eat. I understand that products can occasionally slip through the cracks, but I think this is something that should have been noticed before it made it into a customer's order. Whether it's during stocking, by the department team, or at checkout, I hope more attention is given to products that no longer appear fresh, even if they're still within the sell-by date. Overall, this one experience won't keep me from shopping at The Fresh Market. I still highly recommend them for their excellent meat department, fresh produce, bakery, and the convenience of delivery. I just hope they take a closer look at product quality so future customers don't have the same experience. So the next morning I woke up with the intention of drinking my Bizzy Expresso Cold Brew Coffee only to find it expired a month ago which is very concerning and disappointing! It tells me that stores are not paying attention to their products!!

World Market in Newport News is the new E-Mart and has only furniture, not the Asian food I was looking for. Instead, I went next door to Fresh Market and bought two bags of red, white and blue potato chips. The woman of color behind the counter knew I understood what they had done. She said something out of context with my shopping trip: "It's my turn now." To Whom It May Concern,…read more I am writing to formally bring to your attention an incident that occurred during my visit to your market on June 28, 2026. My husband and I enjoy supporting small, local markets and farms; especially those that remind us of home and our military roots, so it is extremely disappointing to share that our experience today left us feeling unwelcome and disrespected. While selecting ears of corn, I picked up several that were already opened and set aside. I examined them only to understand why they had been separated. From across the aisle, an employee called out, "Ma'am, you can't open our corn here." I responded politely that I understood. She then approached me and asked, "Did you open all of these?" Her tone was accusatory, and the question itself was inappropriate. I clarified that the ears were already open when I picked them up. Instead of accepting my explanation, she continued lecturing me--repeating the same point multiple times despite my acknowledgment. She also stated that your corn is "fresh, just picked," which was factually incorrect given that the ears I was holding were ice cold. "Fresh, just picked" corn would be warm to the touch, as though it went directly from farm to stand. I mentioned that the opened ears had earworm. She replied that "there is nothing wrong with corn that has a worm; you just cut it off," and continued repeating the same reprimand I had already acknowledged multiple times. Despite my calm responses, the employee continued pressing the issue to the point that my husband stepped in, saying, "Okay, that is enough." The employee then told us, "Maybe you should go to Walmart to buy your corn." This comment was inappropriate, unprofessional, and entirely unnecessary. At that point, we decided to purchase the four ears already in our bag, inform the cashier of our experience, and leave; spending only $5.00 versus our normal $60-$80 we spend each time we visit. Unfortunately, this interaction has led us to decide not to return to your market, which is genuinely disappointing. We value local businesses and the sense of community they provide, but the treatment we received did not reflect the welcoming environment we expected--or the positive experiences we have had over the past six years as regular customers. We drive from Yorktown specifically to buy your fruits and vegetables, but we will not drive to Sandbridge to be chastised and publicly ridiculed for something I did not do, and even if I had, I acknowledged your policy immediately upon being told. I am sharing this feedback in hopes that it will be used constructively. Customer service matters, and interactions like this can significantly impact how patrons perceive and support a business. I trust you will address this issue to ensure future customers are treated with respect and professionalism.
