I've lived in CoVa nearly my entire life, but I've never dined at Aldo's. At the same time, the last time my mom dined there was with my dad (R.I.P.). So I figured it would be nice to take her there for Mother's Day. She can reminisce about dinners with dad while I could finally get to experience Aldo's for myself. Aldo's isn't normally open for lunch, but for Mother's Day they were (for obvious reasons). I made a reservation about a month in advance and we arrived about 10-15 minutes early. Aldo's happened to have our table ready, so we were seated in no time. We were seated at a two-top near the piano, and were greeted quickly by our server, John. He was kind, pleasant, helpful and especially courteous towards my mom (I really appreciated that). Personally, John could've ignored me, as long as he made my mom feel at home. He did that with ease and his service was a clear highlight during our visit. We went ahead and ordered some appetizers - mom got a cup of the she crab soup, and we split an order of calamari. At other establishments, the calamari tends to be salty, but Aldo's calamari is spot-on since it was perfectly salted. I would order calamari each time I visit Aldo's - theirs is the best I've had locally. Since John brought us some bread, I used that to try mom's she crab and it was delicious. I would've ordered one myself, but I was content with the calamari. We didn't do strictly noodles for our entrees - mom had the Lamb Rosmarino (6 grilled lambchop lollipops, honey rosemary dijon marinade, parmesan polenta cake, sauteed zucchini, roasted red pepper, fig balsamic), which she described as fantastic. I had the Costoletta di Vitella Ripiena (12 oz. butterflied veal chop stuffed with sauteed spinach and mozzarella, served with linguine aglio olio) - this was perfection. I finished my entire plate, while mom had leftovers after having all her soup and a good amount of calamari. We shared a dessert, a Ferrero Roche cheesecake that was decadent without being overly sweet. It was the perfect closer to our meal. In addition, Aldo's was clean and organized. Its decor reflected an Italian influence, but it was still homely. The tables looked/felt to be very close together (their bar is small), though, especially since they were at near-capacity. But that's not a big issue, unless people start bumping into each other. This was a 5-star experience. Aldo's is perfect for special occasions and any time you want to be pampered a little for dinner. Since it was Mother's Day, I'm happy that my mom was happy. Thank you, Aldo's! JV read more

As much as I love Aldo's and have enjoyed them over the years I'm gonna hold at 4 stars. Solid anniversary dinner, but in my opinion to many small missteps on service. Reservations made on Open Table which I recommend. They will send reminders. My wife and I were seated around 10 minutes early by the host with menus. The table was prepared for our arrival, but up front by the door where it can be more noisy. Not where I preferred, but I almost never complain about table and rarely have asked for a change. Our waitress introduced herself about 5 minutes, or so later. Drinks ordered. Wife house Cabernet and me an Orange Julius mocktail after discussing their Old Fashioned. The waitress could not tell me the house bourbon. She later did tell me it was McKenna, I passed. It took little time to bring our beverages and we ordered apps & main. Focaccia bread is a fave and a must! I enjoy the beat salad. My wife main chicken Parmesan and me the Pasta Special which is a claw & knuckle lobster with a calamarata pasta. Drinks were tasty, especially my mocktail which was surprisingly refreshing. Food pushed out in less than 15 minutes and looked appetizing. My wife often orders chicken Parmesan and thought it was very good. My special was underwhelming for $39. Decent amount of lobster, but I did not care for the pasta and pushed most away. Our waitress was close to the table a few times, but never checked in until we were well into the meals. No complaints, I typically don't. We did not expect anything for our anniversary. But our deserts did have writing of "Happy Anniversary". I ordered the peach cobbler and wife chocolate cake. We both enjoyed, but I must say the cobbler is not traditional with a pastry. My cappuccino was mistaking made decaf. The order corrected with a change to black regular coffee. A to go box was prepared with the bill. I always tip 20% regardless. Why does this get such good reviews? Service was mediocre. Food was overall subpar. My drink was called a Bellini but it was more like a watered down mimosa. This was our first time there and will be our last. Usually when you go to an Italian restaurant there's a certain level of joy in it. The host was rude. Wasn't nice when we walked in, did not thank us when we left after spending almost $200 for 2 people. The server was bothered. We ordered an app, a salad, 2 entrees and dessert. The calamari was good so I was excited for the rest, but as others said, it went downhill from there. The pasta entrees were missing something. My husband ordered bolognese and it was bland. I ordered linguini with clam sauce and it too was bland. I wasn't even unhappy that we didn't have any bread to dip in the clam sauce because it was not good enough to want it. It was finished in butter which gave it a strange heaviness that masked the lack of garlic/parsley/salt/other ingredients. This was not good. On a Saturday night - with presumably their executive chef and A team working dinner - at a restaurant that's been here for 38 years, I expected way more. Underwhelmed. read more

This place absolutely delivered. I started with the calamari and it was perfectly cooked, light, crispy, and not greasy at all. The pepperoni, sausage, and goat cheese pizza was incredible... great balance of flavors, an amazing crust with wood fired charring, and one of those pizzas you keep thinking about after you leave. I finished with the crème brûlée and it was the perfect ending to the meal, rich and creamy with that classic crack on top. WOW this is giving my favorite Italian restaurants in the area a run for their money. I would probably say this easily makes my top 3. Service was spectacular and the knowledge on wine pairings was very impressive. Ambiance was very classy and elegant. Portion sizes are large and the price was very reasonable. I would not come here if you are looking for quiet and chill there is a lot going on but it makes you feel right at home. I will be coming back again for the Veal Marsala. It was date night and myself and my partner decided to try something in the neighborhood. The ambiance was perfect, a piano player, buzzing resturaunt and delicious smelling food from the kitchen. We started with the Carpaccio and focaccia. The focaccia was so delicious we saved half to have with our pasta. The carpaccio was a different style than what I've had in the past but we enjoyed it. My partner got the chicken Alfredo which came with ham and peas which we decided to roll the dice and try, It was very tasty. I ordered the shrimp Gorgonzola which was rich and creamy. We finished off with the cheesecake special which was HEAVENLY. Shout out to our server John. He gave us the best service I have experienced in the 757. My son doesn't eat many foods. Pasta is one of them, and only al dente. That's why I called Aldo's before we came in and asked one question: can the kitchen do that. The man who answered didn't guess. He put me on hold, walked over to the manager, came back, and told me they make anything to order and it wouldn't be a problem. We booked on the strength of that answer. It was the entire reason we chose this place. The pasta came out soft. We asked, politely, and our waiter took it back without a word of pushback. He returned with the chef's answer: no, because making it al dente would mean cooking nine pounds of pasta. Nine pounds. For one child's dinner. Nobody asked for nine pounds of anything, and no kitchen on earth works that way. That's not a reason. It's the first number that came to mind. The manager backed the chef. Then my wife spoke to that same manager, and he told her he had no idea who we'd talked to, that they don't make food to order, and that they don't cook pasta al dente. Ever. Read that twice. The restaurant that confirmed the request on the phone spent the rest of the night pretending the phone call never happened. One of those answers was a lie, and I'd guess it was the one that got us in the door. Credit where it's due: the adult entrées were genuinely good, and the wait staff were attentive and kind all evening. Our waiter did everything he could with an answer he'd been handed. This isn't about the cooking or the service. It's about a manager who was asked for two extra minutes of a cook's attention for a child who barely eats, and decided the reputational cost of lying to a family's face was lower than the cost of a timer. He was right about the second part. It cost him nothing that night. So here's the first part. Aldo's, you had a nine-year-old at your table who'd been promised the one thing he'd eat. You gave him a soft bowl of noodles, a made-up excuse, and a manager who looked my wife in the eye and denied a conversation his own staff had with me an hour earlier. My wife and I ate well. Not my son. And they didn't seem to care If you can't accommodate a child, say it on the phone. Anyone can run a rigid kitchen. It takes a particular kind of person to lie to a parent to fill a table. read more

We were promptly seated for our reservation at 6:30 but left the restaurant almost two hours later after no dessert or appetizers which tells you how slow the service was. Host was rude to my wife who was first in the restaurant to find out the wait. Host looked down at my grandson who is an infant with an awkward look and said he can't seat us. My wife tells him we'll take any table. He said he can seat us in 2 hours. That's when I walked in with my son who was wearing sweatpants. He then said "oh no, you cannot eat here." He then rudely stated we cannot eat there because of my son's attire. Which was fair but my son offered to go home and change. He said no with an attitude. Host was rude and unprofessional. He stated he was the owner. So if this is how the owner runs his restaurant then I would stay away. read more

I had heard that Aldo'S was a local "institution" of sorts and had to check it out. Their Shrimp Gorgonzola pasta was so delicious! I would definitely get it every time I go. Large, perfectly cooked shrimp with a creamy gorgonzola sauce that goes really nicely with the angel hair. They also made a great dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives, which is a favorite of mine. read more

My husband and I go to this restaurant pretty regular to celebrate special occasions mostly. Unfortunately the food has started going downhill. My husband ordered a fish fillet and it has bones and skin found in it. The waiter was not much help and the maitre d' brushed it off simply stating, "we cannot get all of the bones." Really, my husband has made this fish for me before and we have gone to other restaurants and never had a bone in our fish fillet. And they never addressed the skin. Aldos has been a lifetime favorite of ours. We went last night for my daughter's 32nd birthday and we've been coming here since she was an infant in a car seat, so literally 30+ years and it's always been top notch. The picture I have attached here though shows the absolutely unacceptable pasta that was served with my husband's $48 veal chop. The pasta came all broken up. Like they scraped the bottom of a pot of pasta they'd been digging into all night. He did not cut the pasta to look like this. It literally was brought from the kitchen this way . Any self respecting chef would not serve this train wreck. If you know anything about pasta, it gets broken like this when it's been overcooked and or overhandled. - in a restaurant it means they cooked a huge batch and dug out portions from that batch all night. The digging and stirring combined time spent sitting and possibly heating is what causes this and it's downright gross. Other minor complaints: my daughter got this pasta special with a lobster cream mascarpone sauce. Very tasty but she said way too salty and she ended up stopping eating it because it was so salty (and we love salt in this family and I'm a heavy salter when I cook at home). My veal (Francese) and pasta (penne marinara) was very good but could have been hotter- a little on the lukewarm side. We all got house salads and the complaint was that the carrots in it were in huge chunks that almost broke your teeth trying to bite. The croutons were also too big and hard and if you tried to cut either, the pieces would fly off your plate when you finally cut through haha. In a fine dining establishment attention to detail and consideration of the diner's experience with a salad is expected. Focaccia bread is still 10/10 as is the atmosphere, drinks, and service (except the waiter having the audacity to bring out that plate of abused pasta) C'mom Aldo's. You know better. read more

The man at the front desk was not friendly. Server (Tatiana?) was prompt, knowledgeable, patient, friendly, cheerful and really helped us choose the best dishes for our tastes. Ambiance was good too Another reviewer said there was one bathroom stall for the women. Now there are 4, and the doors are not frosted. I had the lamb dish ($39) that came with 6 lamb rib chops, a polenta cake topped with zucchini and a little bit roasted red peppers. Drizzled with fig balsamic. I defy you to find 6 lamb chops any cheaper or more delicious! Spectacular meal. I also had the soup of the day chicken vegetable which was brothy and contained tiny acini de Pepe noodles. Excellent. Hubby got a house specialty Romanelli alla vodka (pasta purses stuffed with fontina, ricotta and parm), and topped with a delicious light and creamy vodka sauce with prosciutto, shallots and 6 huge perfectly cooked shrimp. Excellent in every way. He also ordered a simple side salad. We shared an order of calamari, which was tender with a simple and tasty (light but crunchy) breading with a side of red sauce. Perfect. Enjoyed another fantastic meal at Aldo's for my sister's 50th Birthday. We have been coming here for over 18years+ to celebrate her birthday. We dined here on April 16th and there were 16 of us in total. We had two servers that night and they were both wonderful and were so on point with their service. I really wish I remembered their names. We enjoyed Calamari, Zucchini Fritti and Focaccia bread to start. All of us had the following: Chicken Caesar salad, Sausage Umbria, Fettucine Alfredo with Scallops (those scallops were so good and cooked perfectly, I highly recommend adding this to the dish), Baked Lasagna, Shrimp gorgonzola with angel hair, Romanelli Alla Vodka, Pescatore, Shrimp Scampi, Seasonal Mushroom Ravioli and my sister had this amazing Lobster pasta special that day. Everyone enjoyed their meals and to end the night we all shared the Chocolate Ganache cake, Wood Fire Roasted Peach Cobbler, Creme Brulee, Napoleon, Coconut cake and the seasonal Limoncello cheesecake special. My husband and I love Aldo's. The restaurant is very homey and the staff is welcoming, kind, and knowledgeable. We have tried several of their appetizers, but two of our favorites are the award-winning Calamari and the New York Strip Carpaccio, which is to die for. Their Focaccia Bread appetizer always looks so delicious and is on our list of what to try next time. My husband really enjoyed the lobster cream pasta that they had on special the last time we visited. I always recommend trying one of their specials if something sticks out or speaks to you, as they may not have it the next time you return. Their full menu tends to stay consistent and for good reason. I enjoyed the Salmon with Fresh Dill last time and would certainly order it again. We've overheard guests who have told their server that they drove out from Newport News to visit Aldo's. That speaks a lot to the restaurant and what they have to offer. The waitress was incredibly sweet. We came to celebrate me becoming an RN, and she made me feel so special! She brought out an apple pie with 'Congratulations' written on the plate. The food was delicious--I had the lobster pasta, which was a 10/10. My dad rated his clam pasta an 8.5/10, and my mom gave the vodka pasta a 9.5/10. I would definitely go back. Aldo's responded to my complaint that that they charge 28% or so on a party of five or more. The problem is not that they failed to disclose a going to add a 20% gratuity but It is that they added it on top of the tax which there's already two in Virginia Beach. It is very deceptive. I've never seen a man mandatory tip be added on top of the taxes. The complaint is the mandatory 20% should be just on the food subtotal and they should've just fixed it. It is so ridiculous because everybody I have told about this so they're not gonna eat there anymore and I certainly have not been back. A restaurant makes such a blunder when they do really dumb things like this. They've probably cost themselves $10,000 in meals. Their response is even more concerning because they don't seem to get the issue. Hopefully, they can read the review more carefully and figure out what the problem is. read more

The ambiance is very nice. We were there on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was full but had a few open tables. The older gentleman asked if we had a reservation and looked a bit annoyed when we said that we did not. Our server, Lauren, was great - and probably the best part of our dinner. We started off with fried calamari (very good), thin focaccia bread and zucchini frittes (also good). Food went downhill from there. My margarita pizza crust was so soggy and had the consistency of microwaved pizza. My husband and daughter ordered chicken Alfredo and it was very bland. The chicken was not grilled (no grill lines) and tasted like it was boiled. The sauce was also very bland. My son ordered linguini with clams. The clams were good, but the linguini and sauce had no flavor at all. I ordered Tiramisu- also disappointing. It wasn't bad, it was just average.
