If you ask 90 different people what their favorite pizza is I'm sure they'll come up with 90 different locations. But mellow mushroom his hands down our favorite pizza in Virginia Beach. Why? The sauce is perfect, the thin crust is perfect, the add-ons are first rate. If you're an anchovy lover, this is the place. Of course they have many different possibilities and some fancier combinations. The room itself is beautiful with high ceilings and lots of nice features. Not your typical pizza parlor. They have a bar with more than a dozen different types of draft beer. They have some nice outdoor seating as well. Mellow Mushroom was one of the only gluten-free options in proper Virginia Beach for my wife, but I found it limited in what she could order, especially with the gluten-free pizzas. The tomato sauce didn't sit well with her. Between that and the mishap with the cocktails, where they brought her a gin refresher and not a gin and tonic, and to where the acidity upset her stomach, it wasn't a good experience for her. Outside of that, the regular, mighty, meaty pizza I had was very good, which was a personal highlight for me. And to be fair, the server did her best to accommodate us. But overall, I found the experience wanting, especially compared to our visits to other Mellow Mushrooms in Florida and South Carolina, where we had better experiences. read more

There was so much SPACE. I was out with friends for an event at Seaside Raw Bar then we eventually checked out the Jackalope Festival and our hunger built up so we strolled to Mellow Mushroom. It was the best option because 1. Their seating wasn't as limited as a lot of Oceanfront establishments, so we could easily get seated as a group of 8 and 2. We were craving the Holy Shiitake Pie lol. The pizzas were perfect. I was happy to eat half of it at the restaurant and happy to take the other half home. I LOVED the meatball trio, who knew the combination of sauces would work so well? I like how each Mellow Mushroom restaurant is different but so eclectic with their decor. And last but not least, I'm glad we could just pay via QR code. Will definitely be back because that mushroom pizza is the best thing ever. read more

Knocking one star off because damn that's an expensive pizza, while it is certainly very tasty, it's a pricey pie. The blue haired hostess told me I was not allowed to eat at this establishment unless I went across the street to purchase a T-shirt. I am a VB local- I came in off the beach wearing a halter dress... I asked what exactly constitutes as a "top" because she claimed my dress (which covered everything excluding my arms) wasn't enough, and she couldn't give me an answer. I 100% understand the "dress code" of oceanfront dining (I've lived here for over 4 years and work as a waitress on Atlantic Avenue myself, but this encounter seemed to be less of a dress code enforcement and more of an unprofessional, illegal, case of this blue haired hostess being a weirdo. In any other case, I would've asked to speak to a manager, but I didn't- due to the delicacy of my position at that moment. I was with a friend who needed support, and I felt ask though my hands were tied at the time. I went across the street, paid $15 for a T-shirt that I'll never wear again, and ate at this restaurant. On top of the sickening behavior of the hostess, the food was very mediocre (to be expected from an oceanfront restaurant). My experience was so disgusting and off-putting that I'll never set foot into this restaurant again, and I will discourage anyone I know from dining here unless management makes things right. read more

This place is a vibe! Went with my family for the holidays and it's spacious and has something for everyone. The menu has pizza, wings, salads, sandwiches and more. I saw gluten free pizza, so that's what I had to go for. The gluten free pizza dough is what you expect, it's not a soft dough but it tastes good. The toppings are delish and have so many variations to create your own. Also tried the wings and it's baked! So are the tator tots. Matter of fact, everything is baked! Nothing is fried. I admit, in my older age I have become snobby about large chains and tend to only like to eat at local, family-owned spots. So, I haven't been in a big hurry to give this Mellow Mushroom a try, although my husband is a huge pizza guy. We have a new bike accessory for our baby and so we decided to take advantage of the early summer weather and ride our bikes one friday evening here and sit on the patio. They had some wonderful mellow acoustic music, sat us immediately (at around 6:45pm) and were easily able to accommodate our baby (there were 3 other babies out on the patio which was reassuring). Our server, Maddie, was adorable, friendly, and SO good. Good service is harder and harder to come by so, when it happens, it's excellent. She was an absolute 10. Very personable, good with our baby, efficient, fast with refills and all requests and just kind overall. I'd ask for her any day of the week. I got their Cobb salad and the chicken was amazing, you could really tell the quality and I really liked the roma tomatos on the salad. This Cobb wasn't especially loaded with toppings but was simple and hearty and fresh. Our pizza was an easy choice for me, the first one I saw and the first one I wanted: Super Pepp. Topped with red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, tangy peppers, dollops of seasoned ricotta cheese and a swirl of hot honey. I love savory and sweet and the ricotta on top was amazing once you spread it around. We asked for it super thin and it was very thin just as we asked. The pace was good, food was excellent, wonderful music, and fabulous service. I was far more impressed than I expected and we enjoyed ourselves so much we decided to make this a monthly family outing. The menu is huge and they have far more than pizza on it - lots of appetizers, some local items only, make your own pizza but also a ton of pizzas you can try, burgers, sandwiches, salads, tacos etc. Also, want to try their brownie next time so, will def. be back! read more

It's pretty good pizza! Good vibes too. We stopped in for late night dinner (9:30pm) on a Friday and it was a full house. Took about 15 minutes to get seated. We ordered the veggie calzone and pacific rim small pizza. Both tasted great but our favorite was the calzone. The calzone was way bigger than I thought it would be. HUGE! The veggies tasted really fresh and all complimented each other well. The side of marinara was a cherry on top! The pizza was also delicious. Sweet, spicy, savory. Came for a late dinner with my large family. We were in town for a track meet and this spot was recommended to us. I got a white pizza with chicken spinach and tomato and it was really good. We walked a couple miles down the beach to eat at Mellow Mushroom and it was worth every step. The Mellow Mushroom chain of pizza restaurants should be lauded for their quality and consistency from restaurant to restaurant. Their pizza crust is some of the best I've enjoyed at any pizzeria, thick, and chewy and the toppings go nearly all he way to the edge, so you don't feel cheated by the serving. Manu of the pizzas have swirls of a seasoning sauce. My Super Pepp had nice dollops of ricotta and a swirl of hot honey. I also recommend the three-mushroom blend as an added topping for anyone who loves mushrooms on their pizza. Every Mellow Mushroom has its own eclectic interior and this location is no exception. But as jazzy as the interior appears, we were comfortably seated in a nice booth. If I lived in town, I would be coming here every time I wanted pizza. read more

The wait staff have always been pleasant, there is indoor and outdoor seating (both of which have a great ambiance), and the food always tastes fresh. There are 3 sizes to choose from for your pizza: small, medium, or large. Keep in mind that the "small" size is enough for at least two meals, as slices are generous. Large is enough to feed a few people. Medium is somewhere in between. The wait for food was l-o-n-g, and it was delivered piecemeal. Oddly enough, the last dish served should have been the easiest - a salad. The Enchilada Dip was small but tasted pretty good. The Taco Pizza needed more toppings as the dough was the dominant factor. The hamburgers were the highlight although the tots were a little weird. The Cloud 9 wings were disappointing. They had decent flavor but they were very dry. Some of the wingettes were so dry you could barely pull any meat off. So, I don't know. I love Mellow Mushroom so when I saw one on my last work trip, I was elated. I brought my entire team here (11 people)- it was just what we wanted after a long few days. Everyone had fun. Our waitress was wonderful. Very attentive and super friendly. Overall, happy team!! Only issue was the person at the host stand - she was pretty rude and commented that it would be easier if we sat outside -- despite half of the indoor tables being empty. We didn't want to sit outside due to the weather (humid) and when we asked first there was room inside or if you could put tables together, she was visibly annoyed. I am wondering if they were missing a server inside or they were going to close the inside early (we were not there late - left by 9pm). -- but she could have just told us vs the attitude.
