Nice new location for Aldus. Had a full pour of the Orange Crushcicle and Composite Proof IPA, which are excellent beers. Nice taplist and excellent decor on the inside, which really feels like a step up for the area. Food was provided by Hotel Hanover next door, and they have convenient QR code system for ordering food to your table. Got the Cheesesteak and the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich, and fries. It's a must-do if you're in the area, and I'm looking forward to returning here in the future!

The pork was tender and flavorful. the lindzer torte is buttery, sweet, tart, delicate, and just hit the spot. And if you like vanilla cheesecake they have the best I've ever had! We sat upstairs in the brewpub area. We would have preferred a regular table, but it seemed like they really wanted to seat us at a high-top. I didn't feel like pushing back, so we took it. I assumed maybe they were trying to keep the four-top regular tables open, but by the time we left, the high-tops were full and the regular tables were still empty. Maybe there was a reason for it, but it made the seating feel a little odd. For food, I split the meatball appetizer and the tarragon chicken salad sandwich with another person. Both were good. The meatballs were golf-ball sized and served in a small skillet of marinara with two slices of bread. No complaints on taste or quality. The sandwich was also solid and about what I expected from the menu. That said, the pricing felt a little high for what we got. The sandwich was $14 and did not include a side, and the four-meatball appetizer was also $14. Again, the food was good, but it was definitely on the pricier side. I also had the cream ale and the blonde ale. I don't remember the exact prices, but they seemed in line with the styles and I enjoyed both. My biggest complaint was the 3.99% credit card surcharge. That seems steep, especially at a restaurant where lunch can already add up quickly and most people probably aren't carrying enough cash to cover a full meal. To their credit, there was ample signage about the surcharge, so it was not a surprise at checkout. Still, at this price point, adding nearly 4% for using a card left a bad impression. Without the surcharge, this probably would have been a 4-star experience for me. The food and beer were good, and I did not have any real complaint about the quality. But the surcharge, combined with the slightly odd seating experience and higher prices, brings the overall visit down to 3 stars. Overall, I'd consider going back, but the seating experience and credit card surcharge would make me think twice.

Have been to Vortex many different times and they never disappoint!…read moreThis evening we sat out on the patio, and there was a beautiful breeze. Inside they had someone playing the guitar. So relaxing. During the winter, we were there for trivia several times. That was always fun! Now the food and beverage... Their pizza is awesome. Doesn't matter what kind you get, it's delicious. The beer is also wonderful. There is a wide range to choose from, and my boys have liked them all. I've always had good service, and the place is always clean. In addition, it's located right off the Rail Trail in New Freedom. Great place to stop after a walk or a bike ride!

They have something for every palate, and I appreciate that they rotate styles so often. My personal favorites are the Polar Vortex IPA (hoppy, bitter, and seriously bold) and the Coal Car Snickerdoodle Coffee Stout--which is a phenomenal, dark dessert beer that's perfect for the colder months. The taproom is huge and welcoming, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It's truly family and dog-friendly, which makes it an easy choice for a Saturday afternoon. Pro tip: If you're coming from northern MD, hop on the NCR Trail near the brewery. It's a great spot to hit after a bike ride or a long walk. The team here is friendly, the glassware is always clean, and the atmosphere is relaxed.
