Kind of an odd location tucked behind a self storage business. Ample parking and seating in the brewery. The beer is great. Definitely recommend the Export Hell. Very smooth and has a fruity finish (I may have drank 3 on this particular visit but uwill not confirm or deny). Good selection of German beers to choose from. The food selection is good, but they seemed to be out of several things on their menu including their staple wurst. Staff were friendly and assisted with recommendations on beer and food. Can't really say what the vibe is here cuz we ate at an odd hour and we were the only ones eating, but there were some people seated at the bar. I would come back for the beer. read more

More like a 3.5 star. Our 3rd attempt at visiting. I really want to like this place a lot as I really like the beer I've tried and I like the warehouse style ambiance and space of this location. But there's always something just a bit off on every visit. The servers aren't aware of specials advertised on social media. The food presentation is always slightly off. There have never been more than 3 beers on tap out of several they list. I would not recommend the lobster roll special - cold flavorless lobster bits sprinkled with celery spread over Texas toast bread which was soggy from the moisture. Had to eat with knife and fork. The German coleslaw was tasty and vinegary but served on a plate (not bowl) and juice was spreading to edge of plate and didn't look appetizing the way it was presented but it was very good. The boardwalk-style fries are delicious and they do have malt vinegar for them if you ask. Good beer though - the Pilsner is my favorite. They recently opened up some outdoor seating with picnic tables that face the parking lot. read more

I'm sad to say that this was a let down from every angle. I tried to find a diamond but I could not. The place boasts German beer and German food but except for an Oktoberfest flag near the hallway to the restrooms and a randomly placed poster of Oktoberfest poster it is bleak and sterile. Concrete floors, subway tiles behind the bar and plain blue walls are really throwing off the German vibe. The beer seems authentic but of all the seasonal beers painted on the wall only one was available so I ordered a Dünkel from the main selection. It was alright but it came with lots of head and the bar keep overfilled the mug to compensate. Except she wiped down the outside of the glass with the dirty bar rag instead of using a water spout to clean the outside. And the beer was almost flat. Moving on to the main course, I ordered Jäggerschnitzel with käsespatzle and home made chips. The schnitzel was huge and then placed right on top of everything. This made the chips soggy and not enjoyable. The cheesy spatzle was not spatzle at all but was just a version of Mac and cheese using shells instead of elbows and nowhere was it authentic spatzle. Finally, the schnitzel. There was 5 mushrooms in total and a small drizzle of sauce. I asked for more sauce and I was given a small cup of brown gravy that seemed like instant gravy to me. The worst part was the schnitzel was raw. I mean some of it was cooked but some of it was raw and I mean raw. I spoke with a person who apologized and compensated the meal and that was great but I declined his offer to return or for a free round from the bar. I really wanted this place to shine but one star for terrible atmosphere and food, but you gained a star because you recognized the error and took care of it. You could overlook the uninviting and uncomfortable location, and the OK beer and just come for a cocktail and the food- which is really good- except for the complete ambivalence toward hospitality. Half dozen times I've been in, the staff outnumbers customers, yet you won't get a hello when you come in the door, no one will offer a drink when you sit at the bar. Instead, you can wait while they squabble and surf their phones. Sadly, this is a project that should have stayed in someone's garage. Go to the place a mile north. My parents and I love German food and gave this place a try for lunch today. My dad and I got the Wurst Platter, my mom got her favorite German dish the Schnitzel and my daughter got the Knockwurst. We also got the big Pretzel as an appetizer. I'm not a Sauerkraut fan so our awesome waitress let me substitute for the Kassespatzle, my daughter wanted to try the Kassespatzle too so she was able to substitute her fries. All the food was amazing. I also got a flight of beer which was good too. I knocked off a star because there is very little German decor and they only have a couple shirts for merch. No pint glasses to take home which is a bummer. Very good food and beer. read more

"We don't do flavors, we do bier!" And indeed they do! Beers were of superb quality and authentically German. This is NOT ' craft beer' but rather well crafted libation. The German themed victuals were well matched to the beer. Don't be put off by that though....the special "Thirsty Thighdays" offered 3 meaty flavorful fried chicken thighs were yummy in Buffalo sauce. Flat bread was very tasty as well. They moved to this space about a year ago. It's a bit Spartan but the staff were extraordinarily helpful and informative. read more

The beers on tap were all traditional German styles, and they only had four... but they were all very good. The Pilsner and Christmas Bock were delicious. It's a brewery to add to check off the list but I wouldn't add it to the list of places to return to. Unless of course you live right there in town. I like that they are a German lager brewery and aren't trying to make weird concoctions like most brewery's infusing their beers with all kinds of different flavors. They use only the basic ingredients all from Germany. (Not the water) and they do not really sell food either. However they have a small menu but I don't recommend ordering from them. They just reheat soft pretzels and bratz in a toaster oven. Not very sanitary. Bar tender didn't use gloves, bread bags were left open and fruit flies we're all around the food sitting out as it was prepared. Owner changed his socks right behind the bar... Regardless, the beer was good! We did the Groupon deal but they didn't have the free glasses so they gave us an extra 3oz of our favorite. It was hard to find because you drive into an industrial park and approach the building from the back truck docking stations. They should put a sign with an arrow pointing to the front. Parking isn't an issue and there is plenty of seating inside. read more

My folks and I went for lunch and I had emailed prior due to food allergies and received a prompt response. Having lived in Germany for a few years, I was excited to be able to enjoy a German meal with bier brewed according to German standards! AND clean food without junky chemical preservatives! Amazing!!! I ordered the jaegerschnitzel and kasespaetzel, partnered with a Helles. It was quite tasty and a good portion. My Mom ordered the regular schnitzel, hand cut pommes frites and harvest vegetables. Also very tasty! My Dad ordered the same as I but with a dunkel. The dunkel was on point and wasn't bitter like others who have tried brewing it without German standards and with cheap, substitute ingredients. The staff were very welcoming and warm. The chef was great as he came to speak with me regarding my allergies. They had a painting and bier going on at the same time and that was fun to see. I noticed on their site that they have various events on their calendar. I am sure the larger facility is going to be quite useful in this manner! I saw previous reviews about the atmosphere. I agree that it doesn't scream Germany...yet. I am pretty sure they have had a lot of things to do first (and correctly) to get opened. I am saddened by the harsh judgement considering the last few years and the fact that they've done so much RIGHT. I am sure the atmosphere will be worked on as time allows. Maybe an open Oktoberfest bier tent feel within this grand space would be in order! The menu is pretty awesome and the bier is authentic. The staff were truly giving great customer service. For my needs, it was like Christmas finding a restaurant I could safely enjoy a great meal (with dessert even!) at affordable prices! Why have a 'bartender' who knows nothing about the beer or the food, who clearly does NOT know how to pour?!?! Keg needed to be replaced (understandable), but when pouring the fresh batch, she (bartender) took 20 minutes at least to serve us our order (all the frothy foam from her clueless pour took awhile to subside ). Meantime we had ordered 2 small food items that also took forever (but were decent -- good potato pancakes). It seems the owner uses the biz as hobby/social life -- he was not engaging, OR helpful w the obviously inexperienced bartender. To top it all off (excuse the pun), the beer sucked -- it was like horrible tasting water with foam (the seasonal selection). Bad batch perhaps ?? Others seemed to like it. I've found that a lot of craft breweries are started by individuals who are learning to make beer. Some get lucky, some do not, and most seem to focus on IPAs (which I hate). The guy who owns Gunpowder is a different story. He has spent time in Germany, and learned the art of making German beer. My favorite was the Dunkel. I hope he keeps working at his distribution, and gets his beers out there more. I was glad to at least find his brand at the Beer & Soda store by Walmart. This place is a little tough to find, but make the effort. You won't be disappointed. read more

Don't rely on GPS directions to get there. Once the GPS says you've arrived keep driving. At the stop sign go right and immediately left. Elm makes a little right-left jog at the stop sign. I've wanted to stop here for a long time but they are open stupid hours and not trying to be an actually be a brewery. This is one guy's hobby and social life not a business adventure. The place is small and only seats around 25-30 people at best. While we were nicely greeted upon walking in I can't say we felt really welcome. There was a woman laying across the booth seat working on a computer. The atmosphere is weak at best. It seemed like it was a regular crowd who all knew each other so you felt left out. I love craft beer but I can't say I found anything I really liked here. They only had 3 beers on tap - a Pilsner, German Style Dunkel and a higher alcohol Helles. I liked the Helles style called Export Hell beer the best. I would skip this stop. There are so many better places to visit that have a better atmosphere with more excited brewers. read more

We also had some German food including landjager, ham loaf (tastier than it sounds), and pretzels. They also have a local wine for those that don't enjoy beer. Laid back, friendly, and easy going describes this place. The owner was there too. Much respect to this brewmaster with 20+ years of beer making experience. His philosophy is not about quantity but quality in being a master of now they have Pilsner and Dunkle. We were in a Dunkle mood and the flavor profile was refreshing and delicious. My tastebuds were not disappointed. It's smooth, very drinkable, and finishes smooth with no aftertaste I can taste hints of roasted coffee and chocolate. It pairs well with grilled steak or alone. Don't go to Gunpowder Falls expecting to find 12-beers on tap. Nope. They've got two. A dunkle and a pilsner. Let me tell you...if you love German beer, those two are worth the trip. It's the best dunkle I've had since Germany. From what I hear the owner is a perfectionist and is still tweaking his recipes. I can't imagine why, they already seem perfect. I hope he introduces a hefeweizen soon because that's my favorite beer of all. We didn't do the tour, but we enjoyed talking to the bartender. I think it was the owner's son. Very much a family brewery. I rarely buy beer for home consumption, but I made sure to grab a couple sixers of the dunkle before I left. read more

We were charged twice the amount to fill a growler than if we had bought a 6 pack and we even brought our own growlers. In addition, their food provider, Dell Creek Farms ran out of food after waiting in line for 55 minutes and that's with only 25 people in line. They were soooo slow just slicing meat and wrapping sandwiches. It was painful to watch...and that's with 2 people working the counter. We will never return. We've heard very good things about this place so we decided to check them out during their recent 'German Pig Roast'. This place is either seriously disorganized or they have completely outgrown their location. The line for a beer was insane. It stretched outside the door and down the side in front of the neighboring business (which happened to be a youth jump gym which was hosting a birthday party at the same time). It took about 15 minutes to get to the taps (that's being conservative). The people in front of us were served their beers in glass. The party behind us were served with glass. Us? We rated Solo Cups. Seriously. They must not think much of their own beer of they serve it in plastic. Looking around we could see about half the people has glasses, the other half had plastic. We never could figure out how they determined who got served in what. We went outside and drank our beer while looking for a place to sit. Obviously many of the people attending this thing had done this before since we saw bunches of people bringing in their own chairs. After a while they finally started setting up a few more tables and chairs so we were able to grab a seat and get some food. The food was fine for a food truck (which was German themed food to match the event) but the band... we couldn't figure out the bad at all. Not even remotely German and a very odd choice for a 'German pig roast'. After food we debated trying to get another beer. We noticed the line was even longer than when we had first arrived and we had already been there over an hour. Didn't feel like spending our afternoon waiting in a beer line so we packed it in and headed North to York. To sum up: never in my life have I paid $6 for a 'craft' beer in a plastic cup and I never will again. read more

Simply the best beer brewed in the Baltimore area. The Pilsner is excellent: light straw balanced perfectly with spicy Hellertau. The Dunkel is extraordinary. Full bodied caramel and malts, subtle hops, as well as a touch of smoke. In a field crowded with extraneous flavors and novelty fermentables, it is refreshing to taste beer brewed under the Reinheitsgebot. read more
