Really good pizza and really good service. We had the deep dish and the NY style.

The first time we went here was pretty decent. We were in no rush and enjoyed just hanging out so slower service was no a huge problem and the pizza was good. We went here with a party of 6 last night and I was extremely disappointed. It started off by the hostess putting us in a booth right by the restrooms and with the lights burnt out right above us. If it was packed, I would have understood but it wasn't. Maybe 50 percent capacity and several tables and booths that could have easily cleared off, really this should be a last resort table. Per our request, the moved us, but geez like really, chance your lightbulbs! There were many out. Then, our waitress came to get our order including bread and salads to get something to eat quicker. IT TOOK OVER AN HOUR to get bread and salad. My toddler was getting fussy and the waitress offered her some bread "on the house" which was about the only good thing she did, albeit they, I think we're just overcooked rolls that the kitchen could serve for a profit, but I appreciate the gesture. We had to keep reminding her to clear plates for us and also oddly asked if we wanted clean plates for our pizza. We the pizza finally arrived, we had waited 90 minutes for our food. And then she tells us she messed up the order! She had to the kitchen an incorrect pizza...normally I don't like to make a big deal, especially if this is just the first inconvenience, but we had specifically ordered this for someone. She apologizes but doesn't offer anything except an excuse of being busy. Let me remind you, the restaurant was not full, and I saw another waitress running around way more often then ours. I don't know what our waitress was doing, she was slow and not very accommodating. My Order: Pasta Rosata Cheese Calzone with Spinach Garlic Cheese Bread I personally had the Pasta Rosata; it was good, and I packed the leftovers for lunch today however, it did lack in the creamy smooth sauce I was looking forward to. I give it 3 1/2 it came with a huge garlic knot, while the size of the garlic knot was impressive it lacked in flavor, and was burnt. It felt like the "free garlic knot" with meal was the rejects from the batch they make for the garlic knot appetizer. My wife had the Cheese Calzone with Spinach. She said hers was delicious, and she was happy to see fresh ingredients in her dish. She did say she wished that the ingredients were more spread out, and that they were all put in the middle making the middle of the calzone soggy. The garlic cheese bread was mediocre; it could of been cooked better, the bread was extra hard and the cheese was not the bubbly gooey cheesy goodness. Its as if they over baked the bottom and the top did not have enough time. All in all Ale's Pie House is one to keep on my list of restaurants to explore the menu. read more

Meh is right. While I really enjoyed the look and decor of Ale's, it was pretty much downhill from there. Very similar menu to Carmine's, but with more emphasis on traditional Italian dishes. I had dinner at Ale's with a group of 8 last weekend and, while no one left angry, no one left impressed either. For appetizers we did an array of fried fingers foods like, Fried Green Beans, Mushrooms, and Zucchini Fries. These were all pretty good. For my entree, a friend and I split the Pita Caprese appetizer, a favorite of mine at Carmine's, but it just wasn't as good here. They used melted mozzarella instead of the fresh Buffalo version I'd come to love. Also no jalapenos on this one and it was just sort of bland overall. Some of the boys who had Lasagna said it was really good, so I will say that. Now for the bad, two friends at our table ordered the Baked Ziti and, though it looked awesome when it came out, they dug into find icy-cold centers in both dishes. Yuck. I also tried a bite of a tablemate's Spicy Pepper Jack pie and did not care for it at all. Maybe a real Mexi lover would like it, but I just thought the flavors were strangely off. Stopped in for lunch on a Thursday with a co-worker and it was quiet and spacious, so we opted for a seat near the window. The menu was very lengthy and we asked our waitress if there were any specials ("no, not yet - we just opened") for lunch. After deliberation - salads, calzones, pizzas, traditional italian favorites - I decided: a simple salad and slice of pizza and added on mushrooms as a topping. My friend had the same salad and a slice with onion and green peppers. They offer Chicago stuffed pizza, gluten-free pies, and NY "thin and crispy" style. The slices were good size, and sturdy enough to fold in half and pick up. The crust was crunchy. Four thumbs up. Worth noting: it was odd that the onions were a. red onions b. thin rings instead of pieces/chopped onion. Slices are $2.25 and regular toppings are .50, gourmet toppings . 75. There was everything from coconut to roasted red pepper, gouda, crawfish tail and shrimp. We wanted a side salad, but found they didn't offer one so we ordered the cheapest salad ($3.70). With mostly iceberg (romaine is an extra $1, which I unfortunately saw after I ordered), it left something to be desired. It came with onion, shredded mozzarella, black olives, tomatoes and cucumber. The balsamic vinaigrette was too sweet and of a runny consistency. Not a fan. Will go back for a slice or two and would like to try some of the specialty pies. Hopefully they'll create a happy hour menu and a lunch specials menu soon. Best pizza I've had in the area, and a great location. Only quibble I have is that it doesn't have a full bar - literally their only flaw.

Oh, where to start on a bad meal at Ale Pie House?  We went here using a Living Social voucher, and I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this experience.  Let's begin before you even step inside.  The parking situation is atrocious.  There is only enough parking for 8-10 cars in the lot, and the nearby businesses all have "Tow-away Zone" signs posted, so that's not an option while they are open.  The service was mediocre at best, and not what I would consider "rapid".  Our original server either hadn't been there long or was poorly trained, as she had no idea what was available on tap in the bar.  We ordered the steamed clams in white wine sauce as an app, and they arrived at the table about 20 minutes after we ordered them.  Both the clams and the accompanying bread were delivered just above room temperature, and the clams would have been fairly tasty if they would have been hot.  The bread had to be dipped in the wine sauce in order to give it any flavor at all.     Our second server came to take our entree order, and she skipped one of my party of 3 when taking entree orders. On to the meal itself. My husband ordered a meat calzone, and my daughter I split a seafood combo in white wine sauce (which was a plus, as i was the person that was ignored earlier during entree ordering).  The food arrived and the first thing that my husband noticed was that the crust of his calzone was nearly identical in temperature to the clams and bread that were previously delivered.  After he cut into it, it became obvious that it hadn't cooked long enough, as most of the cheese inside had not even melted.  The seafood combo was about the same temperature, even though the scallops had been overcooked to the point of resembling rubber "Super Balls".  The server, when asked about the seafood, replied that it was frozen, which I find interesting given that Jacksonville is a major seafood port in FL.  My husband returned his meal as inedible, and requested that the charge be removed from our check, which was done without any issues.    I can say a few good things about this restaurant:  The beer was cold and not flat, they have a decent selection of drafts on tap for beer drinkers, the sweet tea is really good, and the server was nice enough to send us home with a Chocolate Trio dessert on the house for our troubles.  The dessert was the highlight of the evening.  From my husband, "I can honestly say that I will never darken the doors of the Ale Pie House again after tonight, and I sincerely hope that this review either gets the restaurant to improve or helps someone avoid an experience like mine." read more

Rather disappointed to say the least. I didn't eat in, just delivery, so a disclaimer there. I really love pizza and Italian so I was stoked to try Ale Pie House but it was quite the let down. I was considering ordering some Al's on a Saturday when I decided why not try somewhere new. Didn't want pizza, so decided to get some parmesan subs and the fried mozzarella. We were quoted at 45 minutes, which is long, but no big deal on a weekend night. It was right about 45 minutes before they got there, so the accuracy is nice. The food just really wasn't good. Although the parmesan subs were ok, the bread and sauce were really bland and devoid of flavor. Even worse was the fried mozzarella. Make no mistake - fried mozzarella is probably my favorite food on earth outside of chicken fingers, so I love to eat a homemade, non frozen version a la Ale Pie House. However, it was almost inedible. We threw away all of the pieces after the first one. The piece I ate tasted like stale vegetable oil, and the sauce was so bland I opted to use some store bought sauce for dipping before giving up completely. Ale Pie House - Fried mozzarella, love that it was homemade but frying oil needed to be changed - Italian Near Me - Orange Park, Florida

One look at the Ale Pie House menu and you can see where the comparisons to Carmines comes from. Their specialty pizza menu is similar in that they have some familiar favorites like BLT, vegetarian, and meat lovers coupled with some unique offerings like yummy hummus and ale fruit pie (seriously, a fruit pizza) along with other specialty pizzas. The ambiance is a lot different too as the staircase in the center of the restaurant and the outdoor patio seating gives the place a classy Mediterranean type vibe. I ordered a fried mushroom app for the table and the gyro wrap for my entree. While I know that gyros are kind of odd for an Italian restaurant, the promise of it being on a homemade pita intrigued me. The app was alright. It came with a decent amount of shrooms. The taste was OK, but I'm fairly certain they were frozen. The gyro was enormous and tasted so-so. The homemade pita that I was curious about was of the flat bread variety rather than a traditional round pocket pita that most of us are accustomed to. It was light and airy, yet had enough substance to hold the contents together well. Due to the size of the wrap, I only ate half before calling it quits. The portion offering for the rest of my table's entrees were also very generous. Another pleasant surprise was that they sold Cheesecake factory desserts which are displayed at the register. While the Pie House is a nice place to visit, there wasn't anything that really wowed me. If you're around the area, it's worth a shot. But with other restaurants in the area of the same genre that offer similar menu items, it may be a while before I check back into the Ale Pie House for any Italian/Pizza cravings. read more

Just visited for the first time. The parking is not as dire as one may think as there is plenty behind the building. It has a very nice atmosphere and service was excellent. And it was the largest chef's salad I've had in a long time. And the ingredients were absolutely first rate. I will definitely be back as they have a very appealing menu. read more

Oh my DAYM! First time here today and I can't wait to come back! Don't usually rave about pizza places, but this was amazing! We tried the hummus appetizer and the pita was so fresh and light and just, WOW! We also split the spinach salad and a stromboli. Everything was fresh and homemade, and simply delicious. Potion sizes are huge, we have plenty of leftovers to take home, and our server Elitsa was friendly and fun! Looking forward to trying everything on the menu! read more

After taking part in the Great Urbancore Scavenger Hunt, my friends and I found ourselves at Ale Pie House for lunch. I can't remember what was in this building prior, but I think it has the particular charm for an Italian joint. Checkered tile floor, high booths and all. Additionally, it seemed that they pulled the music of the day straight from my own collection - The Beatles, Tom Petty, and all sorts of classic rock. I felt rather bad for our waiter as our party slowly trickled in due to everyone coming from opposite sides of town and riding in different cars. After finally getting everyone's drinks and some apps, we ordered. Ale Pie House has some particularly good lunch specials. The one that most in our party took part in was 2 slices of pizza and a drink for $4.99. I misjudged this deal greatly as I figured it too expensive. Each slice is about a 1/4 of a pizza, well worth the $4.99. I went with a sausage and pepper grinder which was huge too. Glancing through the menu, you might feel this place is a bit expensive, but of the portions that I witnessed, it really isn't. I haven't experienced enough of the menu to find a stand out dish, but so far I'm not unimpressed. While none of us drank on this occasion, I did glance at the drink menu. It's not very extensive, but holds local ales and some nice Italian wines. The unfortunate thing is that I think it may be cheaper to just go to the Intuition taproom and get a beer there, than to purchase one here. I was also a little taken aback by how much is charged per topping or the fact that there really aren't any specialty pies that include simple things like pepperoni and sausage or a light veggie. Lastly, a small pet peeve of our entire party was the misspelling of "hummus" as "humus." In my honest opinion, with fierce competitors such as Moon River, Carmine's and soon-to-be Mellow Mushroom not too far away, Ale Pie House is going to need to significantly step up their game to be able to pull in customers over those establishments. read more

They have a side patio so I was able to bring my dog which was a huge plus for me! Small parking lot, friendly service. We have ordered delivery from Ale Pie House on three recent occasions. Our first order I ordered the New York Style thin crust pizza. My wife loves the Calzone. I was pleased with the Pizza the first Two Times, however the third order was a huge disappointment. In my opinion pizza is a balance of crust, sauce and toppings. This pizza had almost No sauce. Considering any restaurant can have a bad day I will probably order again, but consistent quality is important. read more

Ordered from here twice. First time: got a small pepperoni and a salad. Everything was great! We thought we found a new, delicious pizza delivery place! The second time we ordered was DISGUSTING. We got the same thing, sticking with what we knew was good and what we'd been craving! (The pizza IS good!) Half way through finishing my second slice - I take a bite with a hair in it. I always give the benefit of doubt and assume it might be my own, as I have long brown hair. I wish I had been right. My boyfriend takes a bite of his slice and instantly gets a hair too. The highlights: The salad, good wine, nice to have a sauted clams appitizer, and not over cooked. The pizza is enjoyable but there is better locally. Please improve: The eggplant parm was bland. The pasta was not al dente. It was very over cooked. I would love to see some vegetable side options. Particularly brocolli rabe, as this is a great Italian side. This place is local to me and I want to see it improve. Second time: clams this time were overcooked, rubbery, sauce was boiled down to salty. Salad still good. I am a local chef, and I have to warn anyone who is considering dining here to avoid this restaurant. Supporting local establishments is something that is very important to me. But, nothing served here is prepared in house, rather the food is clearly purchased premade from Sysco or the like. I would compare the food quality to what you might expect from a movie theatre. I wish I didn't have to write this review but I go out of my way to try as many local restaurants as I can and this is the absolute worst that I have been to and does not deserve to be serving food to our community. read more

I have been here before and the food was "ok". Tonight I came back to see crazy price hikes that are way out of range for the quality. So we decided to leave. The owner followed us outside to ask us why we left without ordering. We told him the prices were unreasonable for the quality of food they serve. To which he responded by saying we should go to papa johns (who has better pizza) and started harassing and cussing at us. No wonder the whole restaurant was empty. If you are a misplaced Philadelphian or New Yorker, this is a great place to get a pie, some wings, and a lager. Compared to the pizza (is there any kind other than cheese), strombolis, and salads I've had in Philly and New Jersey, I'd give this place a 3.5, rounded up to 4 given the other two places I've eaten pizza at have odd-tasting wheat crust and bland sauce (Mellow) or bland sauce (Al's). The service here is hit or miss. Maybe there are a lot of inexperienced servers here; I always feel a sense of chaos amongst the help even when it isn't busy. The layout and overall appearance are fantastic and the selection of local beers (and Yuengling!) are great. In sum (out of 5 stars)- pizza 4, service 2-3, layout/feel 5, beer selection/bar 5. Averages out to a 4 but I'm giving it a 5 to make up for someone giving it a 1 star for not supporting a gluten-free lifestyle. When you say the words "pizza" and "Avondale" in the same sentence nowadays, your attention may not focus on food but rather the controversy one particular national chain has stirred in wanting to set up shop nearby. Regardless of how that works out, there are hungry pizza lovers in Avondale right now who deserve their ... wait for it ... slice of the pie. And not even a mile down St. Johns Avenue, the folks at Ale Pie House are skipping the controversy and serving up Italian treats today. The one-shop concept opened in February in a storefront that most recently housed a Thai eatery. On-site parking is limited (this is Avondale, after all) and dining room flow is challenging. But Ale Pie House makes up for its logistical shortcomings by fielding an impressive collection of salads, subs, paninis, wraps, calzones, traditional Italian dinners and 22 signature pizzas that bring to mind the menu from "that other place." Pizza crusts come in three styles: New York thin for 10-, 14- and 16-inch pies; a 10-inch Chicago stuffed variety; and a 10-inch gluten-free choice. You can build your own with meat, fruit, veggie and gourmet toppings, including shrimp, crawfish tail and vegan cheese (for a small upcharge). Ten-inch cheese pies start at $7.95 for New York thin, $9.99 for gluten-free and $10.95 for Chicago stuffed. Or choose one of their specialty pies, with such motley configurations as Yummy Hummus, Ale BLT, Spicy Pepper Jack and Traditional Hamburger. My fiancée is gluten-intolerant, which means she hasn't had a hamburger since her diagnosis four years ago. The Traditional Hamburger Pie with 10-inch gluten-free crust ($13.95) caught her eye, and fortunately, I caught a slice. Ale Pie House nails this one with traditional backyard flavors, including mustard sauce and pickles to complement the beef, applewood bacon and cheddar-mozzarella blend. I went for the 10-inch New York thin Vegetarian Pie ($11.95), which includes all the usual suspects along with artichoke and eggplant. It was hard to maneuver this one without a fork and knife as the hefty veggies weighed down the crust--not a bad problem to have. The veggies played well together under the blanket of mozzarella and made for a tasty treat I will repeat. Desserts include cannoli, cheesecake, rum cake and a fudgy double-chocolate cake. I went for the tiramisu ($5.25), a substantial (read: shareable) yet light slab of Italian bliss topped with cocoa powder. Great beer is never far from a great pizza, and Ale Pie House offers 15 draft brews ($2.50 to $6.50), including locals Intuition and Bold City, and domestic and import bottles ($3.25 and $4.50, respectively). Soft drink lovers have Coke products on fountain ($1.95), and in an innovative nod to families, 2-liter bottles ($2.50). Ale Pie House offers lunch and dinner with dining room service, takeout or delivery within five miles for a $10 minimum order and $1 delivery fee. Service was prompt and friendly from our arrival. Hard-working independents such as Ale Pie House play well in neighborhoods such as Avondale. If you're hungry now, this pie house is worth checking out. We've been meaning to give this place a try and were very pleased with our service, pizza and beer. Nice selection of beer with a number of local drafts. Service was very friendly and we really enjoyed the pizza. Very nice flavor to the sauce and the crust was just right. We will be back. Ale Pie House seems like it could be a really great restaurant. The owner seems nice enough the food is decent but the wait for food is awful. I've dined here a good dozen or so times and today was I'm pretty sure the end for me. I ordered the Ale Cheeseburger and onion rings. $9.49 for the cheeseburger and a $1 up charge for the rings. The onion rings were good and I enjoyed them however the burger was over cooked, crunchy, and small. It was served on an oversized bun. No one asked if it was cooked well or tasted good. The taste was good but the crunchiness of the edges took away from the overall product and an oversized bun makes it look like corners are being cut. No one ever offered to refill our drinks and got an on the fly "are you ok" from another server. Watched one table that came in after us get their food way before us. I'd like to be able to return but my time and my money are precious to me and bad service is not worth my time or my money. As a customer I shouldn't have to flag down someone whose job it is to make sure customers have everything they need or that their food is well cooked, or that it comes out in a reasonable amount of time. read more

This is a great date night/ casual dinner place. My aunt and I ate here one night while I was visiting in town. Our server Fjalbi was great!! The food was amazing. The only complaint would be the cheesey garlic bread. It needed more garlic and the cheese to be melted a little more. But everything was great. We tried this place for the first time on Friday night. We got seated right away (they got busier as the night went on, but weren't too crowded when we arrived). The service was good, our server seemed a little frazzled as more people came in and they got busier, but she kept up pretty well. We wanted to order the fried mozzerella but they were out, so we got the fried ravioli app instead. It was good, the same as what they have at Al's, but we love it so we didn't mind! The marinara they had with it was very good, tasted homemade to me. For dinner, we shared a chicken and pepperoni calzone. The others in our group got pizza and calzones. Our calzone was HUGE and really good! We usually share one at Al's and finish it, but this one was so big that we only ate half between the two of us and saved the other half (mmmm, lefotvers!). My husband and I had dinner here on Thursday night. We cannot say enough about the customer service. New waitress ( sorry I could not recall her name) was very friendly and very attentive. Stephanie also waited on us and was amazing! We mentioned that the last time we had been there we weren't satisfied with our pizza. She went above and beyond to make certain our pizza was prepared as ordered. The pizza was PERFECT (shout out to the chef) and so was the customer service!
