While in Providence, we were feeling starved, and we ducked into Aleppo Sweets on a whim after I had it bookmarked for quite some time. I pretty much could eat hummus every day and be happy, and in fact I eat garbanzo beans literally almost every day. Delicious! We parked on the street just outside the restaurant, which was super convenient. Inside we tried to figure out if we sat first or if we ordered at the bar, so we sat and watched some people first so we didn't make a noob mistake. We looked over the menu and wanted one of just about everything which told me we were both very hungry, and in the right place. To start, we ordered an Arabic coffee and a black mint tea, as well as a regular and chocolate baklava. The coffee was super strong and delicious, as was the tea. The baklava was subtle, not too sweet, and perfectly crunchy. Great way to start! For the entrée we just decided to order the mezze, with flatbread, pepper bread, lebnah, hummus, baba ghanoush dip and fresh veggies. The Aleppo pepper bread was super spicy and wonderful, a perfect pairing for the tart and creamy cheese/yogurt dip. The hummus was smooth and flavorful, and the eggplant dip was smoky and chunky, and a great companion for the veggie spears. Service was fast and friendly, and the prices were really good for the serving sizes and obvious quality of the dishes. The interior was decorated in a way that was authentic, friendly and inviting, with beautiful plants and Syrian art. I would absolutely return here and try many of the other dishes, given how good the items were that we did try. Only downside was the seating area was very uncomfortable, and my legs fell asleep repeatedly during the meal due to how hard the chairs were. Otherwise, a really great experience overall. read more

Aleppo Sweets is nothing short of AMAZING! The decor is visually captivating and refreshing. All of the plants and middle eastern crafts and furniture made this little gem quite enchanting. Food: One can immediately notice the high quality and freshness of the food. I ordered the well-cooked chicken kabobs (3 chicken skewers), which was lightly seasoned, served with pita bread, mildly pickled red cabbage, and sliced pickles for added flavor. Toum (garlic sauce) is not usually served with kabobs in Syria. No rice option here, either. The falafels are delicious, lentil soup is decent, lamb and zaatar fatayr was great, and the baba ghanoush (mashed roasted eggplant dip) was excellent. Drinks: The black tea with mint is great, but I really enjoyed savoring the ginger, cardamom, and mint tea. A medium sized pot of tea is enough for 2 and the large pot serves 4 or more. Dessert: Their bakhlawa is probably the best I've had, even better than the ones I've had when I visited the Middle East. I recommend trying each variety!! Free street parking. Self seating. Came here because of the great reviews. We had the food, not the sweets. We had the shawarma, which was probably the best of the bunch. Chicken kebab was also pretty good and I enjoyed the pickled vegetables which came with the meals. The misses: the grape leaves were hot but relatively bland. The kibbeh was similarly bland and kinda just tasted like a ground beef pocket. The lamb kebab surprisingly fell flat too. It was basically textureless ground lamb without a ton of flavor. Overall, I'd give it a 2.5 rating. Service is nothing to speak of as you are expected to pick up your own dishes and forks, sort of like a middle eastern Panera. I went around 12:30pm on a Wednesday and it was PACKED, so I took my food to go. I came here for Vegan Restaurant Week and got the Aleppo Pepper Fatayer (kinda like naan with toppings), vegan "lady finger" baklava, and cardamom iced tea. This was my first fatayer but it will definitely not be my last - it was incredibly delicious! I am very picky about baklava so I was pleasantly surprised that the vegan baklava was very good, I didn't miss the animal products (i.e. butter). The texture and taste was perfect. We also tried Aleppo Pepper Fatayer and man-o-man was that DELICIOUS! The bread was light, soft and pillowy with nice bold flavors from the Aleppo pepper. It was a little spicy, but the taste was perfection. Definitely one of the best fatayer I have eaten in a long time. The foule however was very underwhelming and I would not order it the next time. The baklava is definitely up there amongst the best one's but it's a little pricey. They even ship their baklava's, so it is a great option if you do not live close by, but if you are in the area I definitely recommend trying this restaurant. read more

I have tried their Baklava numerous times at the Wintertime Farmers Market over the past two years and it is fabulous. I have been wanting to stop into their place since it opened and finally made it in and I am so glad I did. It was great to see that not only are their deserts fantastic their apps and entree's are too. I ordered, at their recommendation, the Tamarind Date drink. I was skeptical at first, but the sweet/sour taste left my mouth watering and wanting more. We started with the Hummus which was great. Creamy and full of flavor. I had the Kefta Lamb Kabob and wow, just wow! The flavor coming from the three kabobs that come with the order was great. Also the herb/onion and banana peppers that come with them add a ton to the flavor. We also split a Chicken Shawarma Wrap,great as well! The flavor was awesome and I loved that it was pressed so that it was a bit crispy. We also added an order of Falafel, some of the best I have had. This is such a lovely space! Everywhere we looked there was another subtle design touch, rendering a welcoming, stylish feel to this small space. The ordering system left a bit to be desired - there were people lined up at both sides of the counter and menus in both places, but there were no clear markers if one line was for takeout and one for dine in. Eventually we figured things out, and the woman at the register was so patient! Had just a snack of mint tea and stuffed dates, but observed our neighbors' meal (tables are small & close together so there's no way not to at least creep on each other, even if you don't talk). Their food looked so good! Our dates can out about 5 minutes before the tea. That gave us time to scarf several down. These are a must-eat, people: sweet, nutty, chewy, almost creamy texture. My husband described them as "addictive." Our tea came in a lovely copper pot, with a towel wrapped around the handle (the tea pots with heat-resistant handles seemed all to be in use). Our metal rimmed cups were beautiful, but the handles got hot enough that my husband wrapped his in a napkin to pick it up. The tea was great! Less sweet and darker brewed then at Tea in Sahara, but served with similar style, warmth & attentiveness. I've been a fan of Aleppo Sweets for months since discovering them at the local farmers market. Touched by their personal story, enchanted with their delicious baklava, and dedicated to following their social media posts, I knew I HAD TO make it down to their new storefront on Ives Street as soon as possible to try out their savory dishes as well. Still in their "soft open" phase, I was so excited to see this charming and rustic shop in person and spent several minutes taking in this beautiful space. I was impressed by a such wonderful design elements and thoughtful components - from the reusable and sustainable serving pieces down to the shared seating spaces meant to inspire community and conversation. I'm a true lover of Middle Eastern food, so I basically ordered one of everything from the menu just to be able to sample the food and SPOILER ALERT: it's all delicious! The tabouleh was the perfect parsley to bulgar wheat ratio and mixed well with lemon juice and spices. The hummus was creamy but needed a touch of salt to be to my liking. The filling inside the grape leaves included a roasted and smoky flavored tomato paste, which was delicious and unexpected. The chicken kabob skewers were tender and juicy. The falafel was exactly as you would imagine - crispy and seasoned well. The kibbeh was absolutely perfect in size and texture and the meat inside was flavorful and juicy. The cheese fatayer was salty and creamy and absolutely delicious. I also enjoyed a pot of mint tea (black tea with fresh mint leaves added) along with a chocolate walnut baklava square, which was the first time I had tried this combination of flavors. YUM! This is such an unique and wonderful cafe to be added to Providence--it is BEAUTIFUL and everything is delicious. The family who owns it came to PVD as refugees from Syria, and through partnership/friendship with families in the community were able to bring their culture, talents, and culinary vision to our city. And what a privilege! What began as selling baklava at the farmers market is now a thriving cafe! I started with a Turkish coffee and my friend ordered a tea that came in the loveliest copper pot. I'm telling you...the plants, the little waterfalls, the teal and turquoise and copper accents of the space are astoundingly beautiful. We sat in the couch corner, and it was like being in a family's living room. The girls working at the counter were so sweet. For our snack we got pistachio stuffed date: Lord have mercy. It was the best date I've ever had (literally and figuratively). I bought an assortment of baklava to go and will report back, but I'm sure it will be amazing. I heard someone at my gym talk about the lentil soup being out of this world, and a friend at a nearby table said the lamb kabobs were phenomenal. I plan to be back for lunch/dinner very soon! This spot sells itself as sweets but it's oh so much more. There's a wide variety of savory Syrian fare. Your meat selection is limited to lamb and chicken and all accoutrements have to be purchased separately. We ordered the lamb and chicken skewers with a mezze three selection platter that featured baba ghanoush hummus and grape leaves. It went together splendidly! Pita bread arrives with the skewers which was soft and delicate for wrapping the meat or dipping. I also had the tea with mint ginger and cardamom. So good. It did come with sugar already and I'm not sure it comes any other way. Stuffed dates rounded out the feast for dessert. It was $70 which is kinda steep but I thought it was worth the price since everything was extremely tasty and fresh. Just something to consider if you're on a budget. A really cute place tucked away in a residential area! The interior is nicely decorated and inviting. I've tried three or four different types of baklava now and love that they have rotating varieties available. My favorite was the birds' nest which almost has a Hong Kong-style chow mein sort of texture to it. And, of course, the traditional baklava is delicious, too. I like to walk down with friends and get baklava and iced tea to enjoy back at my place. I've also eaten inside a couple of times. The foule is hearty and tasty. I also liked the mint tea which is sweetened but not too much. Aleppo Sweets is a nice place to have a long chat with a good friend. My one issue is that service is quite slow. There is only room for about 20 people to be seated inside to begin with, and that coupled with the tremendous popularity of the place can mean long waits, even if you're just trying to grab some baklava to go. The staff are really nice, but they may need to hire some more people so they can serve customers more quickly. A tip: To save time you can order ahead, especially if you're purchasing an entire sheet of baklava for a party or a special occasion. read more

I had eaten treats from Aleppo sweets before but I finally made it in for a full meal and it was great. We got a couple pots of tea, hummus, stuffed dates, individual dinners and an assortment of baklava to top it off. The large pot of tea is... large! The small is also easily sufficient for two people to split. We tried the black tea with mint and the green tea. Both were good, and lightly sweetened but not overwhelmingly so. A nice balance. We all enjoyed our meals (I got a falafel wrap, not spicy) and the appetizers and of course the baklava was delicious. My favorite was the classic pistachio but all that we tried were great. I will definitely be back. As others have said the seating area is small so I can imagine it gets packed. We visited for an early (6ish) dinner on a Sunday and there was plenty of seating but it was filling up by the time we left. I have never been a big fan of grape leaves, but when it was served warm, fresh, and doused with an aromatic glaze that soured my tongue and warmed my soul, you know it was good. The fataye were a culinary experience that is common place around the world (i.e. meat on bread), but it was worth trying. I went here, for the first time, today, with a group from my church. I was very excited to experience this unique restaurant in Rhode Island! Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed in what I ordered, for my meal and the baklava I tried. I ordered what I think was called Kibbish. It sounded so good, with lots of good stuff in it. Unfortunately, though there were 6 good size fried pieces, they were terribly dry and tasteless. Such a disappointment to me! I drank a lot water, so as not to choke on them! Never should these be served without some kind of dipping sauce, even yogurt sauce - anything to give them some flavor and make them moist enough not to choke on! I took 3 home, so that I can dip them in a sauce and try to moisten them up. I also chose a whole pistachio baklava, because they looked so plump and honey-soaked on the display counter. I took it home to eat & when I opened the container, it was a sliver - not even half the size of those on display! And, just like my meal, it was completely tasteless, dry, with no sweetness and no indication that it had a drop of honey on it!!!! I paid $13.50 for a meal I nearly choked on and $4.61 for a sliver of a dry, tasteless baklava - a complete rip-off. I will not return nor recommend this place to anyone. I never have written a negative review, but there was nothing positive about my experience here, except the company of my church friends at our table. read more

I loved this place. The food and decor were simply wonderful. The baklava was some of the best I've had, not too sweet like some other places. My favorite were the lady fingers and classic, but they were all delicious and you can't go wrong. They tend to sell out toward the end of the day, so the earlier you go the better. The dessert was so good that we went back the next day to try their food - and it did not disappoint! The Fatayer was a lovely meal, with the za'atar and pepper and lamb flavors tasting so good. Aleppo sweets is mainly Aleppo dinners. And the whole thing is just a unique experience. You order at the counter, sit down, and food comes to you. But don't forget to get your own glass of water and utensils. And you have to put it all away afterwards. Semi-service. Counterbalancing that, there is a nice array of comfy seating and tables large and small, so as long as you're not there at a peak time, you can choose the spot that's right for you. No one is policing your meal, and you're free to lounge for awhile before maybe ordering something else. The atmosphere is vaguely hipster, accentuated by the beards of the owners. (Hey, I know, they're cultural. I'm not blaming them at all. Like hipsters never culturally appropriate anything.) Anyway, on to the food. Also unique. Pro tip: Syrian bread is NOT the fluffy bread that you'll see people ordering. You probably will want to get one of those (the breads with various toppings is a whole menu section). The Syrian bread with your food is strips of softish flat bread that they brought out to me in a plastic bag, so I have my doubts as to when it was made or if it was even made there. That's the worst of it. That, and they were out of chicken kebab! The only food was the one I ordered! I bet it's great. The lamb kebab was good but a little light on the flavor, almost as if they're trying to cater to American tastes. The lebneh was outstanding, the foule unique and... well, definitely not to American tastes. I enjoyed that. Weirdest part of this review? The sweets - aka the baklava - didn't seem to be anything special. A couple of them had chocolate. I don't associate baklava with chocolate. They were not dripping in honey, not tinged with rosewater, just resolutely average. Final note: Buyer be warned. Food looks reasonably priced, but that's because it's all sold individually. If you get the lamb kebab, it comes with a little bit of green (cilantro?) and a couple of pickle spears. That's it. Want a real veggie? Any other side? Order it. Price will quickly go up as you assemble a meal. This would be a 3-3.5 star review, except I am considering location.
