If you'd have told me the best corned beef sandwich I've ever had is to be had at an unassuming Polish deli in Bayonne NJ I'd have rolled my eyes and said go to Brent's in LA then get back to me. Well I would have been SO wrong. The corned beef sandwich was far and away the best I've ever had. 100% lean, not a molecule of fat, piled high on excellent seedless rye bread. I didn't need mustard or anything, it was that good. I split one with someone, the sandwich was HUGE, and I could only eat half of my half! No worries, the other half was still excellent the next day. The pierogies looked terrific. Definitely worth the online hype. read more

Bayonne's finest. Thr pastrami reuben is the thing to come for apparently. It wasn't too fatty which was good and sliced thin. It was kind of hard to eat though but who cares. Solid reuben. Wow! Had lunch there. The hot pastrami is delicious, you can't finish a whole sandwich it's soooo large! They make their own breads which are huge! They taste incredible. Then I got some Krischicky to take home. Boy, was that good with a cup of coffee. Go enjoy a nice lunch or pick up one of their great foods made for dinner. Will be going back soon. From the outside it is very hard to tell, but lurking inside is a monster pastrami sandwich lol. I'm serious it's Huge!! This review is mainly based on their lunch menu with some other good things a polish deli should offer. The lunch specials are usually sold out later into the day so get there by noon. The pastrami seems infinite but don't quote me. The pastrami is sliced and bathing in an au jus that just soaks flavor into their rye bread. Their rye bread is what makes all their sandwiches large, so big they will sell you a half sandwich, cutting one slice of rye in half. You have to try the pastrami, how you like it, on rye and I dare you to tackle a whole. Chicken cutlet sandwich never disappoints. Pierogis are always fresh and a great side. A pleasant stop if you're looking for giant sandwiches. I was there looking for Polish prepared food which I heard was available. I expected more Polish food offerings but most of what I saw was sitting in a darkly lit case and I was turned off. The hot food looked like it had been sitting for a long time and it was 11 a.m. I opted for coffee which was fresh and strong and a slice of apple streusel which was a bit sugary for my tastes. The shelves had a few baked items but was mostly empty. They also have a section for ice cream which has a window that opens to the street to sell items.The server was friendly and there is limited cramped seating. In Bayonne there are many choices of delis, but this is not one of my favs. read more

When I first walked in I thought it was an ice cream parlor. It was 12:30 in the afternoon, I expected a lunch crowd. Therefore service was quick. I ordered 2 pastrami sandwiches to go. Once I got the sandwiches home (about 20 minutes) I anxiously opened the bag. Upon initial inspection the sandwiches were a nice size a nice amount of meat. The bread was more white then rye and no rye seeds. The pastrami that we had heard and read so much about was flavorless. A huge disappointment. To sum it up size did not matter. This pastrami was dry and tasteless.Sadly if you enjoy a good pastrami sandwich it's not to be found here. read more

Came here for a pastrami on rye with sauerkraut and mustard (~$7). It was a-okay. I asked for my rye to be toasted, but it wasn't no biggie because it was still tasty. I'm glad I didn't ask for a whole sandwich because the half was enough. I also tried their potato pancakes with sour cream. We have a winner! The lady behind the counter heated it up for us and it was delicious. The bf had a chicken cutlet sandwich (~$6) with cheese, lettuce, onion and mayo on a round roll. By this time, it was midday, so understandably, they were out of long rolls, which the BF initially wanted. Instead, we got two chicken sandwiches on a roll - one for there and one for home. The chicken sandwich was yummy! It was even better when I wrapped it in foil and heated it in the oven later that night! I wish I tried their fried fish cutlets. They looked crisp an delicious and were down to two pieces, which is telling of what the usual customers here like! Not sure why this tiny enclave of goodness is only listed as a catering establishment, but Alex & Terry's offers home-cooked food and friendly conversation for the average hungry consumer on a regular basis. I personally go for the pierogi and potato pancakes here but it looks like they have plenty to choose from otherwise. I spied out what looked like tasty bigos on my last visit but didn't order (it being Lent and all.) No menus on the walls - just ask what's good for the day, buy (or bring) a paper and have a seat. Inexpensive but this is definitely not cheap food. I don't think you'll be disappointed! They started advertising ice cream and I'm interested to try that too. Delicious pastrami and a classic old school feel. Upon walking into Alex and Terry's I could tell that this place has been here for quite awhile; and there's nothing wrong with that! Some of the best places I've ever eaten at are the classic places that know their food is great and aren't concerned with constantly changing the decor. We ordered two pastrami sandwiches (which were GIANT), pickles, two drinks, and two pierogies. The total came out to $24.50. This place is cash only. They hand slice the rye bread to order for each sandwich. The potato pierogi was definitely my favorite. We tried to the cheese pierogi as well but the cheese they used tasted like sweetened ricotta to me. It was still good but not what I was expecting. Pickles were yummy. I wish they carved the pastrami in front of you and that it was cut a little bit thicker, but overall I enjoyed my lunch and I will be back! read more

I gave this establishment 2 stars because the sandwich was actually quite tasty. However, the service was dreadful! It was quite crowded with only one person behind the counter making and taking orders, so I understand the young lady being a little stressed. However it is unprofessional to argue with customers, especially when you made the error. I've been looking for a good deli close to home for quite sometime, and was ecstatic when I was told about this place. Amazing Polish specialites! The best in Bayonne. The kielbasa and sour kraut on rye is just amazing and massive in size with smokey greatness. The large homemade pierogi, stuffed cabbage and potato latkes are just perfect. They also sell their great pierogi frozen by the dozen to go. The blintzes and cheese babka are completely amazing too. One of the best lunch spots in the neighborhood especially on a cold winter's day. The only other Polish food that I've ever had that was this good was in Greenpoint or on the far East Side of Buffalo / Cheektowaga.
