This place is a treasure! I've been wanting to come here for some time now and I got the chance recently with my gf and I wasn't disappointed. I felt like I was walking into a pub in County Cavan, Ireland where my family came to America from. This is the kind of place I could spend hours sipping Southwick and eating apps while talking to the bartender about life. I wanted to like this place: my mom and dad have told me fond memories of coming here. Now that dad is gone, and mom is moving. I figured it was a good time to take my mom down memory lane. I recently I visited town and took my mom here for her first time in years and my first time ever. The building and interior are beautiful with a masonry and wood exterior and lovely warm paneled interior, but it was completely empty on Sunday evening. Odd. The server was friendly, but the bartender leaned across the empty bar, bored and on his phone. We took a booth which was a little tattered initially in a charming way. The taxidermied moose was sporting a MAGA hat and there was a blue line flag wooden sign hanging. These signs threw off the vibe and made me feel unwelcome here. Another Bayonne staple. I grew up coming here as a kid and it remained a favorite into adulthood. This place was on our food list, as we moved away, and wanted to hit up classic Bayonne spots. My friend put me on to the the steak sandwich a few years ago. It's an open faced sandwich served over buttered toast. I feel like a 1950s housewife eating this. It's like pure butter. Phenomenal. Had to check this place out, it looks so magical from the outside. On inside even more, you are transported to a different time or a different country. The waiters were super nice. Not busy at all at 6 on a Thursday. Other reviews say this place is small but there is about 7 tables in the front and like 10 tables in the back, maybe it seems small when it's busy on the weekend. We got some signature cocktails that were on a menu at the booth. No prices but then we when we got the bill the milk way was $13 and the white wolf was $9. Both drinks were amazing. They got me very happy tipsy. And you really taste the pecan in the white wolf and the chocolatey creamy goodness in the Milky Way. We split the onion soup and the filet mignon. The onion soup for $8 was reasonably priced for the amount of cheese and soup they give. It was the best we both ever had. The flavor was so balanced and not too salty. The bread is under the cheese and the cheese tasted so good and gooey. The filet mignon had a good char and flavor but about 2 oz of it was grizzle, it was not center cut either. The spinach was amazing though, creamy but still felt like you were eating a vegetable. I would definitely come back again and try some of the other food like the corn beef. Not bad, or actually pretty decent! Charming old spot, a bit dusty and dark-definitely a townie place, and none the worse for that. You get the impression that if you came here twice you'd be considered a regular. Great unsweetened iced tea. The Canadian bacon was actually pork belly, fried crispy and served with ketchup-a herby vinaigrette would be better to go with the fatty meat. Tasty but not Canadian bacon. Excellent lobster rolls-nice chunks of lobster meat, a mustardy mayo bound it together with crunch provided from the celery. House made chips needed salt, which you almost never see! AMAZING local spot. A previous reviewer hinted that it seems like the kind of place where if you go twice you become a regular. That is spot on. The old -school vibe is great. It is a very old fashioned place that is very comfortable and not pretentious at all. The people are all from nearby, and seem to be very familiar with the menu and what is on tap. Not to worry, though ... everyone is super friendly even if you are new. I can attest to that from my recent visit, and before I go any further, I"ll provide the spoiler alert that I will definitely be going back. The food: We ordered the cheesesteak egg rolls and they were phenomenal. The unexpected surprise was the homemade ketchup. Homemade ketchup! As it turns out, they take great care in all their ingredients, and this has a little spice to it. Not to worry, they also have the Heinz if you prefer. The burgers were on point. My girlfriend and I came here for dinner on a weekday evening. It was our first time trying this place. We arrived pretty early in the night, around 6pm, and it wasn't crowded at all. We were able to get a booth table right away. While looking over the menu, we ordered a glass of wine and a beer. For our meals, we went with 2 of there more famous dishes ordered here; the sauerbraten and sliced steak sandwich. Both of these meals were delicious. I especially enjoyed the sauerbraten, as the gravy covered over the meat was really good. The steak sandwich was cooked medium, which wad perfect, and just overall tasted great. We both enjoyed our meals and experience here. They have lots of menu items to chose from, and we would definitely come back to try some more items. read more

So I called in a order for pickup and once we arrived the bar had a couple people sitting at the end of the bar so me and my friend sat at the other end of the bar only for the bartender to come up to us and tell us he is going to need the seat for other people we got up and no one even sat down. Last time I came here was 12 years ago. Nothing really changed. The interior looks the same. It has an old school feel to it. I came here for St. Patrick's day. I heard they have the best corned beef and cabbage in Bayonne. I have to agree, it was delicious. The food last time in 2022 went was not very good as was pork served as chicken by waitress who insisted was right. I then got through she was incorrect. As soon as you walk into Hendrickson's, you can immediately tell it's a local favorite. Everyone sitting at the bar seems like it's their second home and the ambience has an old-school Irish pub feel. The owner introduced himself to our table within minutes and began recommending things to try, but not before asking us what drinks we wanted (you can't go to a place like this and not have a beer). Sit at your table for even five minutes and you already know it's a place where their primary concern is you wanting to come back again and again. First impressions are important. The food definitely didn't disappoint. We had a round of appetizers that included French onion soup (with extra thick melted cheese), Canadian bacon strips, loaded potato skins, and garlic wings that you can tell had a homemade sauce. For dinner, the group at our table had mini burger sliders, steak, a turkey burger, and a Philly cheesesteak (with a perfect bread and the cheese and onions melted into perfection). I had wiener schnitzel with potato pancakes and red cabbage. With such a wide variety of food types, it was incredible that they managed to nail each one. To top it off, we finished with a warm brownie with ice cream and an apple strudel that is a must try. On his way out the door, the owner asked how our night was and talked to us for a bit. When he discovered it was someone at our table's birthday, he immediately took it off the bill and said it was on him. It's so rare you can find a place with the same charm it probably had in 1925 but Hendrickson's did it with a flare. The service was spot on. Didn't have to wait long for our meal and there were a lot of customers. The staff was busy but always polite. Decided to revisit this old favorite restaurant. The ambiance has not changed. It still has that feeling of old Germany and Bayonne memorabilia. The service was excellent. They are very attentive and friendly and professional. However the food that we used to love (especially the famous steak sandwich everyone craved)was a let down. The portions were small and what used to be presented so well and taste so delicious just wasn't. It was just OK and it used to be something you really enjoyed. Even our beers were warm and tasted old. But then the check came and quite honestly I am aware that prices have gone up but for what we got, it was not worth what we paid. Turned out to be a very disappointing evening. I doubt if I will go back again and have serious reservations about recommending it to someone looking for a good place to eat in Bayonne. I would've given this one star but our waitress and the really good steak fries bumped it up one star read more
