Step back in time to when service was paramount, dining rooms had checkered floors, deep polished wood bars that invited you to stay awhile, and restaurants didn't charge for bread...LOL! My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Mediterraneo. From the moment we walked in, it felt like stepping back in time but in the most nostalgic, welcoming way. Our meal began with warm dinner rolls, followed by soup, salad, and a delicious seafood antipasto. My husband had the pork chop, and I ordered the paella with chicken and Spanish chorizo. Both dishes were seasoned beautifully and absolutely delicious. The rice in the paella was especially outstanding, soaking up all the incredible flavors from the chicken and chorizo. Two great cocktails later, we left already planning our next visit. Exceptional food, attentive service, generous hospitality, and a timeless dining experience that's becoming harder to find. Nice restaurant located in Bayonne. Food seemed to be Portuguese to me which I like. The shrimp on green sauce was very good. For dessert had the flan which was ok. The appetizers (Calamari, stuffed mushrooms, garlic shrimp) were very good. Parking is on the street. Be wary of Bayonne parking authority. Easy to get a ticket here. The service was pleasant. This restaurant was bought to my attention by my aunt so i knew i had to give it a try as i love Portuguese food!!!!! Me and my mom decided to do a post mother's day lunch here. We arrived at 12 only an hr after they opened and we were the only ones there. We didnt mind because we came to eat and when thats the agenda u dont need a crowd. Lol Our server was very nice and helpful with the menu. We decided on the garlic shrimp which came with a nice salad (with an outstanding house dressing), fried potato chips and veggies. We also got s pitcher of red sangria which was ok tasting. The garlic shrimp were delicious! A tad bit tough but not inedible at all. We also had yellow rice which was so flavorful!! The complimentary bread was a star on the table! It was the best fresh Portuguese bread i have had in a long time. I tried to ask the waiter where it was from but its delivered in. The meal was really good and filling with tons to take home. They also have some specials under $20 dollars so be sure to check them out. Downside is there is no parking lot so street parking is the agenda and on Broadway its all meters so be sure to have ur quarters ready! We really enjoyed our time at Mediterraneo! Had the Paella w/ shrimp, sausages, chicken, scallops & a lobster tail. My paella came with about 3lbs of rice, which was dry like the other ingredients. No flavor other than dry. Very disappointed with my meal today. Service is always on point. Interior needs updating. I ordered the monk fish in green sauce. Check out the picture for a look at the gelatinous sauce. It was flour paste with no flavor. Served with potatoes crisps, rice and veggies. There were huge disks of potatoes in the sauce that only added to the abundance of starch. The seafood platter was dry and the capers on the salmon steak were burnt . It had potential as the flavor was at least there. My first time visiting was indeed a great impression. It captured my heart the second I walked into the dinning room. I felt I was back home, with a view to the yard and the smell of the delicious food. We ordered a nice bottle of Spanish red wine, Ribera del Duero. Of all the appetizers and main dishes served, I also ordered grilled octopus.... Let me tell you, I had years I did not have such a delicious, tasty and tender octopus... It brought back good memories. I literally cried of happiness. If you like octopus, I suggest you ask for some "guindilla" or red chilli pepper to serve on top or on a side. The service? The best. Very welcoming staff. The place is clean, especially the restrooms! Yes, some indicate that if the restrooms are clean, the kitchen is better! I hope you enjoy too. I recently came to The Mediterraneo on a Friday evening with my girlfriend. We made reservations in advance, so we had no issues getting a table right away. We were both in the mood for some good Mediterranean / Spanish food, and this spot looked like it offered great choices. Upon getting seated, we ordered a pitcher of White Sangria. This was excellent. They service was really good, as everytime our glasses were half empty, the waiter refilled them right away. After finishing up our white sangria, we put in our food orders. Before any of the food came out, we were given complementary bread and butter, as well as salad and soup. This was a nice surprise and was a great mini appetizer; as everything was light. So far everything was going great. Now our main dishes were ready to come out. We ordered Shrimp in Garlic Sauce with Rice, and Paella with Lobster. Both of these entries were excellent. The Paella was amazing. It was the perfect mix of all different types of seafood. A+. The Shrimp in Garlic Sauce was perfect as well. The Shrimp sizes were huge and we were given so much. The garlic sauce was to die for, as it topped the shrimp nicely. The portions for both our meals were so huge, that we had to take home leftovers to eat the next day. Also, we ordered some more Sangria after dinner, this time Red Sangria and it was just as good as their White Sangria; maybe even better. We had such a good experience eating here, from excellent service to excellent food. We will definitely be coming back again. Highly Recommended. read more

We visit your restaurant for the first time and I was disappointed of how slow the service was. As we were escort to our table their were a few people there waiting for the rest of their party for a birthday celebration. The only thing we received was our appetizers which we enjoyed but while waiting for our food to come the waitress walks to our table to informed us that my husband food went to someone else so then we had to wait some more for about approximately an 1 1/2. Our food finally came and by then I was ready to leave so my husband asked them pack it to go. The Manager never came over to apologize for the delay and neither did they compensate us for the long wait. Solidly delicious food. I hadn't been there in years when I decided to go last night. I gave up a lot of my favorite Spanish & Portuguese haunts when I developed an allergy to crustaceans, but last night I wanted to show a friend another of Bayonne's good places. We started with clams in a white wine broth, and it was out of this world. He had wine, I had sangria, and we were both satisfied. For dinner I had filet of sole rollatini. It was a very large portion and I wound up bringing half of it home. My date had garlic shrimp - at my insistence - since I told him I used to love it myself. He was impressed. The brought us sides of rice, chips and vegetables. Service was attentive and unhurried. We finished dinner with coffee, no dessert since we were stuffed. I'd say the only down side is the place really needs an update. It's not as long in the tooth as Rincon de Espana, but it could use a shot in the arm. When you walk in you walk into the bar and have to continue back to the dining area (same with Rincon) so unless you see a host there, you feel like you're in just another Bayonne hangout bar. Dinner with tax & tip was 100. A bit pricey for Bayonne, not for other areas. Food is solid, old-style, and good. read more

The Mediterraneo has been a restaurant in Bayonne for decades serving great food in a community style atmosphere. Anyone would have been fortunate to dine or celebrate within their walls. For those in the know, this establishment has changed hands in the past few years. That being said...I have never witnessed a transition in ownership that tried to stay as true to the former ambiance and mentality as they did. Taking the details and minutia that made the first iteration a charm and doing their best to carry over that essence into the new proprietary. The menu has been left largely unchanged. Staples such as their rack of lamb, shrimp in garlic sauce and steak sandwich are still worthy of five stars. Be sure to bring an appetite because the servings are gigantic...and come with a big heaping side of rice, vegetables and lovely fresh cut homemade potato chips. Wash it down with their signature sangria and you are well on your way to a good night. read more

My father is long time friends with the owner of this restaurant. He bought this place after leaving another restaurant in the city. This place has fresh seafood and great service. Seriously not cool to have the public just walk in on that! def not the place for family, date or business. This was my absolute last try at this place. The 2 previous attempts were equally uncomfortable: the place wasn't heated in winter; food served cold; while plentiful it was not tasty and one can, by far, get real tasty and quality entrees if you just take the 20 minutes to drive into Newark. They seem to cultivate a sports bar like crowd, so they have a nerve charging what they do. read more

If you were never in the Mediterraneo under the previous owners, you will enjoy your meal. If you have, its the little things you'll miss. That said, the service is attentive as ever. The first difference is the house dressing. It did not have the tangy zip of the old dressing. They did bring out a trio of dressings. The blue cheese has actually chunks of blue cheese in it. The Shrimp in Garlic Sauce did not disappoint. Nor did the potato chips, veggies or rice. My husband ordered the Seafood Medley (I'm lacking the words in Spanish) when it arrived the presentation was beautiful, but the filet of sole and the scallops lacked salt and pepper. The scallops also had no sear nor did they seem fresh. The Sangria was still good. I would still recommend this restaurant, but not with as much gusto as I would have in the past. read more

I used to love the Med as it was one of my favorite Spanish restaurants in the area, without having to travel to Newark. I came here recently and was a little disappointed. From what I understand, the Med is under new management which I can assume is why the menu prices have increased significantly. By significantly, I mean a basic paella was raised eight to nine dollars from the original price. The food itself, however, no (serious) complaints! Appetizer - shrimp in garlic sauce. Hard to mess this up because it is basically a staple in Spanish cuisine. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and had plenty of garlic. My favorite part of this appetizer is always the garlicky oil that's left over to dip bread in! Dinner - for me, I had shrimp in wine sauce. Surprisingly not on the menu. I say surprisingly because this item is typically on menus for this cuisine. The waitress said that they could make it, however, she came out a few times during our appetizer to ask what kind of wine sauce I meant. By this point I already knew that I should have just ordered something different if the cooks weren't familiar with my dish. When the dinner arrived I wasn't surprised that the shrimp in wine sauce didn't come as expected but again, this was my own mistake ordering something that wasn't on the menu. My dinner guest ordered the seafood paella. Delicious! The only issue that we had was that the size of the seafood was a little small - specifically the lobster claws and mussels. But again, no major complaints because the food was still delicious. No dessert, but we did split a pitcher of red sangria. They try to up-sell you from the small pitcher to the large by saying you could take it home if you don't finish. Worked for us! The sangria was delicious, had plenty of fruit, and was definitely strong. However, we intended on ordering a small and we should have as a $9 upgrade to a large really isn't worth it for a party of 2. The staff is very friendly and super attentive! There was never a point during my experience where there wasn't an employee asking how we were doing or refilling our glasses without even asking. This could have been a 4-5 star review, however, the recent spike in prices is what is holding me back. Tips - don't order anything that's not on the menu! read more

Have lived in Bayonne for over 7 years and I have always passed by this place and never eaten at this place. Family celebrated Father's Day here and was my first time eating there. I am not a big seafood fan but everything looked very delicious, the shrimps on garlic sauce are to die for! The grilled octopus.... delicious! But my all time favorite dish from them is the Pollo al Ajillo (chicken in garlic sauce) every time I go back there I get the same thing. The staff is very friendly, they are always making sure you're doing well, your water glass are always full. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for some good Spanish food. read more
