Being followed down the road and confronted about not leaving a tip, along with being told not to return when you are working, was upsetting and unexpected. I want to be clear that tipping decisions are personal. While I understand that you work for tips and that this can be stressful, a guest's financial choices are not their responsibility to justify. My husband and I chose to dine at The Well because it has become our home away from home while we are in town, and we take pride in treating both the establishment and its staff with respect. Over the past two years, we have consistently tipped well, from Ryan, whom we met early on around 2 years ago, to Madison, who was brand new hire as of last week. On this particular visit, however, we felt like an inconvenience to you rather than welcomed guests. We also noticed discrepancies on the bill, including two identical drinks charged at different prices, and charges for standard burger condiments such as mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup, which we did not request as extras. These factors influenced our decision that evening. I do empathize with the challenges of working in a tip-based position, and my intention is not to diminish that. However, confronting customers in this manner is not appropriate and places everyone in an uncomfortable position. We value The Well and the people who work there, which is why I felt it was important to address this directly to you. The food was excellent. Simple bar food but so much better. The service was a little slow but they only had 1 person at the time. It's a sports bar in the place that used to be a place called Churchills. A Bayonne institution in its day. It's an open front establishment and It was a nice day so they had doors slid open. I went here for lunch. I ordered the breaded chicken cutlet sandwich with onion lettuce tomato mayo. Simple order but not every place does it right lol. Hands down, it was delicious! The chicken was cooked perfectly with good seasoning on the breaded cutlet. There was extra lettuce but that didn't impact the quality of the sandwich. I also like laid back places for lunch so it was nice to sit relax and enjoy. Oh and the beer was served in chilled glasses which is always appreciated. Definitely recommend. read more

I had to try the food again before I gave it an honest review. 1st time I was there the drinks were made perfectly and the staff are so nice ! Super cool people. However, when I ordered the food I had a couple drinks so, I couldn't really tell if it was good or not. I went back today and got myself the Well Burger medium rare , the mozzarella sticks and the mac& cheese wedges. So, first of the burger was made perfectly. Whoever seasoned the meat can season the heck out of their food. 10/10 for me The mozzarella sticks and the wedges were coated in this batter that overpowered the taste of the ingredients in the inside. The ranch that came with the mac & cheese wedges is unnecessary and doesn't balance the already unbalanced food. The mozzarella stick has thick pieces inside and for the thickness of it. It should be melted more. The marinara sauce that came with the sticks was too tangy and had a strong taste of tomatoes. I think too much paste is used and then watered down. Some folks like that I do not. Especially since the batter is so strong. The place is large and has plenty of seating. The crowd not as diverse as I would like it to be but that's ok. It's Bayonne i'm not expecting it to be. You can watch the game, grab some food and have great drinks made by some cool bartenders. I would def recommend it for a quick bite and drink if you're in the area. Go check it out. Worth a shot read more

Great place for pub food & drinks. It's not fancy but it's very good. Burgers, wings & beer are the usual fare, but you can get a great salad & specialty drinks. I like their margaritas and the burgers. They have a lot of TVs where they show sports programming and sometimes on Friday nights they have local music performers. A best kept secret in town. You can come for the live music or to watch a game on the multiple tv screens or just to unwind with friends. This place has a full bar with the best onions rings I've ever had. The wings and burgers are also tasty. The servers are quick and friendly. Adding an update that they have live music every Friday at 8. Also all their desserts they make themselves. Which is a nice surprise, you wouldn't think a bar would make their on desserts. Came by on a Saturday night around 9:30-10pm. Pretty empty, group of us sat at a table. We ordered our drinks at the bar. Food here looks really good, didn't try since we came after dinner at another restaurant. Not much to speak on, as it was spacious for our group. I think they had a live performance that just ended when we arrived as we saw someone breaking down their set. If you go on The Wells in Bayonne website it said the staff was friendly with a friendly atmosphere that's so not true. My Server/Bartender had a rude demeanor and her delivery came off in a disrespectful fashion. My thoughts is if you don't like people don't work for an establishment that services people. I've been a regular at this establishment at various points in my life as I am a local and the owner Jack is a great person.. aside from the hometown feel .. the food is amazing and it's all the right parts Irish pub... local hang out and sports bar ... there are creature comforts unique to only a bar/restaurant of this caliber and it's clean and inviting... grab a burger or any of their specials and I promise you'll be back again and again. Best burger I've had in Bayonne and it's not even close. Better than Hendrickson's. Better than Churchill's (RIP). The meat was well seasoned, juicy, and perfectly cooked. Brioche was perfect. Lettuce and tomato were fresh and crisp. Sweet potato waffle fries were damn good, too. Beer selection is a little lacking and the service was what you'd expect from a daytime bartender. I visited this bar last Friday around 9pm and was overall satisfied. Drinks are cheap (around $3.50 for a pint of local beer and $6 for a glass of Moscatto). Bartenders are friendly and the ambiance is nice. There was a guy playing live music which was just ok. He had a nice voice but he only played old songs. If you're under 40 you probably wouldn't recognize half of the songs he was singing. Since he was playing some country songs I asked if he could play Chicken Fried (Zac Brown band) or Summer of 69 which is a song everybody plays but he said he couldn't play Bryan Adams. So overall I was satisfied with my visit but although I love live music I would have preferred if the bar was playing top hits or stuff like Bon Jovi and other rock songs which pair perfectly with beer and wings. read more

This local bar is a pretty great place to stop for a drink and a bite. I recently moved to Bayonne 2 years ago and it's become a fast favorite. Last night on the other hand left me unsatisfied, largely because the wings I ordered (and have ordered in the past with no issues) were extremely, over the top, to high heavens and back - salty. I could not eat more than one wing without the salty flavoring leaving a terrible aftertaste in my mouth. I asked our server if I could exchange them for a different batch, thinking it was the sauce I ordered (Buffalo mild). She let me know that the wing-batter itself is seasoned with BOTH sazón AND adobo. For those that don't regularly use those seasonings, there is a lot of salt in that. Sazón itself really shouldn't be used with anything else, but to add Adobo is ridiculous. Anyway, I was told I couldn't take the wings off the bill so I took them with me in hopes of remedying the issue at home myself. I couldn't. I can't stress enough how salty the wings were. They should come with a high sodium level warning. TLDR; go for the ambience and beer, do not get the wings. read more

WOW! This place is a hidden gem in Bayonne. This is not your standard pub food. Everything we had was way beyond what I expected it to be. They have a good variety of craft beers as well as draft beers. They had beers from many local breweries too. For the price of the food, you definitely get your moneys worth. The restaurant also has weekly specials which are always changing. We had the Mushroom Swiss Cheesesteak, substituted the Swiss for American cheese, and The Back Highway Burger. Both were delicious and worthy of eating again. We will for sure be coming back to the Well and Grill. read more

Great Food and awesome service. Make sure to check out their Weekly Specials chalk board behind the bar.! Definitely elevated comfort bar food. THEY HAVE WAFFLE FRIES! Chelsea, the bartender would always have a huge smile on her face as soon as someone would in the door. Knew majority of the guests by name, and knew their drinks! Love that about a local bar. Halfway down the block, however, I said screw it, let's take one of the high-tops by the door - I'm sure it'll be just fine. It was! I tried this little bar for takeout during the pandemic and ordered the backroads burger. It comes with cheese, grilled onions, bacon and onion rings stacked on top, and very reasonably priced. I was surprised by how good the quality of the food was, even after it was driven home in a carry out box! The burger was super flavorful and the onion rings were still crispy. I did note that the staff was not practicing social distancing and did not have masks on, even though that is the safety measure set forth by law, which held be back from giving it 5 stars. Under non-pandemic situations, I would recommend this place if you're looking for a dive bar with good food. read more

We ordered Buffalo wings to share (8 large wings), burger and fries for my husband, I snagged one of the famous "Popeye" chicken sandwiches which was crazy crispy! Kids had chicken fingers and macaroni bites. Everything was delicious and delivery was very quick which meant the food arrived hot, everything that should be crispy was still crispy and the buns on the sandwiches/burgers weren't soggy. I had the back highway burger which has barbecue sauce on it. I had ask for extra sauce. After enjoying the burger and the company of my son the bill comes. $ 43 plus. No problem. Then I noticed a $.50 charge for open food. I questioned the server about this charge. It was for the extra barbecue. The first time that I order this burger it came with extra sauce on the plate. Since then I have gone their at different times with my son , daughter, wife and by myself. I always asked for extra barbecue sauce because they stop putting it.on the plate.
