I was referred to Dr. Hoghooghi by my dentist because I had a loose tooth and implant that needed to be removed. Dr, Hoghooghi presented me with all of my alternatives for restoration including implants, bridge, and dentures. He patiently answered all of my questions. I decided to have Dr. Hoghooghi surgically remove the tooth and implant. My prosthodontist will install the bridge. I found D. Hoghooghi's work to be excellent as were his highly professional staff. If you'd told me a few years ago I'd love an oral surgeon, I'd have laughed my head off. But here I am, several procedures and years later, and I'm writing a 5-star review for Dr. Hoghooghi. I came here to deal with a broken tooth prior to getting Invisalign treatment and ultimately get a dental implant. Dental implants can't move like teeth do, so you have to have your teeth stable before getting an implant. The consultation was excellent, and he answered all my questions. I chose to receive anesthesia for the extraction, and it was great once you get past the IV part. Afterwards I had no swelling or complications--I compulsively followed instructions and asked questions for anything I need clarification on. He said to contact him two months prior to completion of Invisalign, so I did that and after a consultation we scheduled the dental implant post installation. I chose to stay awake for this with local anesthetic. The procedure was kind of bizarre and felt surreal, but I got through it! We scheduled an appointment for a few months later to ascertain that bone had grown around the implant sufficiently. A few months later and yes, it's ready! I can now get the new tooth/crown from my dentist. When you consider how disagreeable some dental work can be, it is super helpful to have someone so thoroughly competent plus easy to talk to as Dr. Hoghooghi is. I couldn't sing higher praises for Dr. Hoghooghi. I had four wisdom teeth removed yesterday. I don't need to take the medication and am basically pain free except for some discomfort when swallowing. I'm not swollen either and going about my day normally whole slurping on iced green tea latte and smoothies and cold soup! I was told the third day might be the most painful, perhaps I'll even use the ibuprofen then. I was filled with so much anxiety about the pain because I'm traumatized from two very severe back injuries. I thought it would hurt that same way. Heck no. Easy breeze. You can do this - nothing to fear. The procedure itself was a breeze. I got a pediatric dose of anesthesia/sedation and apparently that was enough! I recall waking up for two seconds or so and I actually enjoyed witnessing at least a second of action, I remember wanting to laugh and tell the crew how great I feel. Haha. Other than that the procedure felt two minutes long when it was an hour. No pain even afterwards. I took the Tylenol but only because I was so freaked out that it would start hurting so bad. It never did. I had smoothie and soup after the surgery and once that gave me some sharper pain because you know there's an open wound. Like when you bite your cheek and eat tomato sauce. It subsided within 30 seconds. The bleeding was going on for much longer than the doctor said but nothing hurt and it went down so I wasn't worried at all. Either way - please don't hesitate. This was fun, actually! The first photo is after the surgery and the second is not even 24 hours later at Starbucks enjoying iced green tea latte! I see some subpar reviews on here but they all seem to relate to billing and the staff. They were great with me. I got the enhanced Delta insurance and it cost me a few hundred dollars only for all four wisdom teeth. Staff was great. They work hard for your comfort. read more

I had a good experience with the doctor. Surgery went well and he was kind. I was overcharged in billing and response to inquiry was delayed for some time (I had to keep checking in even though I did not ask them to do very much) and not very nice. They did not file with medical insurance, I had to file that myself. I had a much better and faster experience with my medical insurance. I called the reception a few days after my surgery to ask about some symptoms I was experiencing, and the person at the front office were extremely dismissive and gave completely nonsensical suggestions, insinuating that I was imagining my symptoms. They said that they knew what they were talking about because they had worked there for a long time, but I afterwards consulted with an actual doctor who offered meaningful suggestions and agreed that I was experiencing side effects from the surgery. I would like to leave a better review, but my experience with the staff after my surgery was really disappointing, and made me feel very uncomfortable. read more

Dr. Hoghooghi is very professional. Removed my wisdom teeth skillfully leaving little pain. The recovery was faster than expected and the communications with him were efficient and pleasant. His staff, unfortunately are very subpar. Specifically, I called their office after the surgery noticing the amount they charged my credit card for was more than what I was supposed to pay according to my insurance claim record. I received the most horrendous customer service. The person on the phone was extremely rude, impatient and condescending and demanded me to calculate the amounts myself as if my inquiries were ridiculous. Turns out it was because of an item that was not covered by my insurance so I had to pay out of pocket. I told her I thought highly of the doctor but I felt she was rude, expecting at least some sort of apology, and she just hung up! Intravenous amnesia + 6 teeth (one surgery) removed here. Dr. Alexander said "good night" then I lost conscious. Next second I got a gentle slap on the face to wake up. Face didn't swell much and the pain was contained by just using the Ibuprofen. No major issues and bled only a tiny bit after removing the cottons. The only issue however is that Dr. Alexander sends the prescription to your pharmacy *1* day before the surgery lol. read more

I was referred by my dentist to go to Dr. Hoghooghi to get my wisdom teeth out. The top two were completely bony and the bottom two were listed as difficult, all impacted. I was SO nervous to have the surgery in fear of the pain that would result. I took a 10mg of Valium before surgery given by the office and went in bright and early to get it over with. I was completely sedated throughout the whole procedure. Charry and Carol were the nicest when they prepped me for surgery and helped me after. It was comforting to know Dr. Hoghooghi has an amazing staff. I had the operation this morning and while I was watching TV I even forgot it had happened. I'm in no pain, thanks to the hydrocodone and ibuprofen, and the swelling is mild. I've heard the third day is the worst but am not anticipating anything horrendous. I had two procedures done by Dr. Hoghooghi. The first was the removal of two wisdom teeth and the second was an alarmingly invasive/risky surgery that required a bone graft. I saw many Oral Surgeons and was incredibly nervous for the potential permanent damage my procedure could cause. It was to the point that if there were any way I could avoid going through with it, I would have. However, I had no other options, my jaw would break under the pressure from the teeth/cyst they had to remove. Not only did Dr. Hoghooghi expertly inform me on every part of the procedure I was about to endure, he also took extra precaution as to collect all the internal data he needed to execute such a surgery. It's taken me a while to write this post but here goes... For anyone considering a dental implant with Dr. Hoghooghi, please know that you are in the BEST of hands. Two years ago, my second implant in my front tooth was starting to fail after just one month, I was devastated. I was apart of the 2% statistic of failed implants, twice! I was heartbroken and defeated from all the surgeries, bad doctors and the fact that I had so much bone decay from the surgeries that the chances I would have a front tooth again were slime to none (keep in mind I was 26 at the time). Through a referral, I met Dr. Hoghoogi and he assured me he can help me and get me a front tooth. He instilled his confidence in me and gave me hope. Two surgeries later: one for the (bad) implant extraction and stem cell bone graft, one for the new implant; I finally had a strong bone and an implant in my front tooth. No issues what so ever. My story -- got referred to Hoghooghi/Trebowski for wisdom teeth extraction. I went in for my consultation and scheduled my wisdom teeth extraction for the next morning due to a cancellation. The day after I got my wisdom teeth removed, I was eating pho for lunch. The next day after that, I was eating Korean BBQ. Minimal swelling, minimal pain (I only took my painkillers once, after the initial novacaine wore off), and the entire experience was such a breeze. Everyone tells horror stories about wisdom teeth extraction, and I totally didn't have one. Dr. Hoghooghi is very direct, concise, and thoughtful. He took into account my medical history, explaining how the actions his staff would take to counteract my asthma, anxiety, and current medications. I never had any doubt about Dr. Hoghooghi's ability, as he is also a maxillofacial surgeon who skips across the street to the Stanford Hospital to reconstruct faces after they go thru windshields or get shattered by a bullet. Had to have a partially erupted, impacted wisdom tooth out. I was referred to Dr. Hoghooghi by Dr. Ala Din (another 5 star dentist in Palo Alto). I don't like going to the dentist, because who does? I usual have a high tolerance for pain but not when it comes to any dental work. I was very apprehensive about this procedure and now that it's done, I'm so glad Dr. Hoghooghi did the work. He seems very knowledgeable, and although not overly talkative he exudes warmth. I knew I could trust him to do an excellent job after a short consultation. Front staff was professional and kind. Overall, this practice comes off as very professional with experienced staff. I went in super nervous today, but I was assured I wouldn't feel anything, sedated and woke up surprised that it was over. It's been 10 hours since my procedure, I have no swelling (they gave me a medicine to prevent swelling before they started), and barely any pain. I've only had to take one ibuprofen tablet. I know it's supposed to get worse on day 2, but I'm not worried. He gave me prescriptions for stronger drugs if needed and provided reusable ice packs and a strap to hold them comfortably in place. Dr. Hoghooghi came highly recommended by a dentist my family trusts implicitly but after my fourth appointment, I would not recommend, especially to young patients who need more time to feel comfortable. The office compromises on patient education and explanation and the team lacks any bedside manner. Approach is cold, condescending and impersonal (mostly Hoghooghi himself) and many of the comments from other patients regarding the front office ring true. Feels like a "dental factory." I had a tooth planted at this place. I read reviews before I went to this place. I saw some warnings about billing issues. I didn't pay much attention because each time I asked how much I need to pay out of pocket before the treatment. Usually I just pay whatever I need to pay so I don't know why there are still these kinds of issue but now I know. At the last doctor visit, his assistant gave me another bill. It was a surprise to me, because I thought I paid all I needed to pay before the surgery, so I asked some questions. The lady at the front desk turned out to be really rude. I haven't met such rude person in my last 20 years. I recommend to stay away from her if you don't want to get a heart attack. It turned out the plant was tilted, and so it added extra difficulty for the crown. read more

(all quotes in this post are paraphrases, I don't remember exact wording) I wish I could give him less than one star. Dr Hoghooghi may be a fabulous surgeon as all these other people say. I will never know though. I recently moved from NY and got a new dentist, who wanted me to see an oral surgeon about my wisdom teeth (which my old oral surgeon in NY decided should stay in for the moment because the risks of removing them outweighed the potential risks of keeping them). I went in for a consultation with Dr Hoghooghi this morning because my dentist highly recommended him (as did yelp) but was immediately turned off by him. When he greeted me he did not address me by name, and never used my name throughout the consultation. I felt like I wasn't a person to him, I was just a patient. He sat down and told me I was going to have all 4 wisdom teeth out. At no point in the consultation did he ask me if I had any questions or concerns and he did not discuss any other options or even tell me why leaving them in for now would be so terrible. I voiced my concerns a few times and felt that he brushed them aside and just said "no, that won't be a problem." (I wrote on my medical history that I have anxiety, so you'd think he would make more of an effort to put me at ease.) I told him that I have trouble breathing through my nose, especially when I have my mouth wide open. He then held down my left nostril and asked me to breathe through the right (and vice versa) WITH MY MOUTH CLOSED, and when I was able to breathe ok he asked me if the problem was psychological. He told me that since the roots are very close to the nerves, he might have to leave the root tips in my mouth. I had asked my oral surgeon in NY if this was a reasonable solution a year ago and she told me that when you leave roots in the mouth there is often infection or the gums don't grow over properly. I brought this up with Dr Hoghooghi and he said "no, this is normal practice." That may be, but I needed to be reassured, I needed him to give me all the details so I could judge if it is a risk I'm willing to take. Finally, he gave me a referral to get new x-rays to see the location of the roots and nerves and said that when I come in for surgery he'll let me know whether he can take out the whole teeth or if he'll have to leave the roots. This is not information I want 5 minutes before surgery. After receiving this information I want another consultation to talk about the situation in my mouth before jumping into surgery. He then shooed me into the waiting room and had me schedule surgery. I will be canceling the surgery this afternoon and seeing another oral surgeon read more

Be careful with this place - they ripped me off. I feel that all they care is to charge as much as possible from you by recommending unnecessary treatments and sending additional bills afterwards. I got estimation for the exam and treatment at the day of the exam. Exam was not covered by insurance so I paid fully for it. In some months I got an additional bill for the exam which was 3 times higher. I gave them a call and they said that my insurance allowed them to charge me 3 times more. I was fully responsible for the exam and paid for it during the visit! So what does this suppose to mean!? Also they sent me estimate for the treatment which was twice more than the original one. After this story I got to a doctor with good reputation and she recommended me not to remove the wisdom teeth as they're fully functional and need no to be removed. So I suspect that at this place they recommended unnecessary treatment to charge even more from me. read more

I had my wisdom teeth removed in August 07. The procedure and recovery were fine. Billing was a different story. I paid the amount due after my insurance contributions. A month later I recieved a refund from the office with a letter saying my insurance paid more than they had anticipated. In March of 08 I get a past due bill for hundreds of dollars with a letter now saying the insurance company underpaid. I was terrified of getting my wisdom teeth out. I put it off for 10 years. Now I'm 30 with severely impacted wisdom teeth. What to do? Well, I follow the yelpers advice and go to Dr. Hoghooghi (pronounced ha-gu-gi). WOW! You could not find a more squeamish, terrified, wimpy person than me. I hate needles, and the idea of anesthesia scares me. Dr. Hoghooghi was thorough, patient, and has a very calming, reassuring presence. He warned me of all the things that can go wrong and I was well prepared without being too freaked out. I had roots of teeth sitting on the nerves in my lower jaw, and one going into my sinus cavity, and another coming in at an angle and starting to form a cyst. I was "severely impacted". But somehow I had the courage to go into that operating room all by myself and trusted the doc and it all worked out great! I am proud to say that I had minmal swelling, no bruising, very little pain. I followed the post-op directions very carefully (this is key) and took all my pills and it worked like a charm. Today its been 8 days since my surgery and I am chewing, there is no swelling and no infection. I was able to go to the store on my own the second day out. My follow-up visit was easy. The staff, by the way, are terrific. They helped me with billing (they take Delta Dental), and even gave me a copy of my gnarly X-Ray to show my friends. The nurses were amazing. They made me feel comfortable, all alone in the operating room, they got my IV in on the first try (unheard of on my arms), and they were very kind during recovery. This is absolutely the place to go to have your wisdom teeth out, or any oral surgery performed. I wish all my doctor's office experiences were as great as this. read more

Let me start off by saying I have really bad anxiety about any kind of surgical procedure, so to give 5 stars to someone for taking out all 4 of my wisdom teeth (2 of which were impacted) takes a lot. At the consultation, we sat down to look at my x-rays together and all it took was "yep, those need to come out" and I started bawling like a baby (I was actually 30). He asked if I had anxiety problems, and I explained that I had a pretty bad surgery phobia (I wouldn't have even been there if one of my teeth wasn't causing me great pain). He was EXTREMELY supportive, and told me that he didn't need to go through the details of the procedure with me because he knew that would just freak me out even more. He went on to say that I could be sedated during the whole thing, which sounded great to me. On top of that, he gave me two anti-anxiety pills (one to take the night before so I could sleep, and one to take the morning of so I would actually make it into the office). The surgery itself went just fine. I was (mostly) out for the whole thing. When I woke up, there was no pain. Dr. Hoghooghi called later that night to make sure that the bleeding had stopped and ask how I was feeling, which I thought was very nice. The recovery was also swift. I had heard horror stories about dry socket and gigantic swelling chipmunk cheeks from others, but luckily missed out on both of these. read more

This is a review for Dr. Hoghooghi. I am not really big into reviewing -this is my first ever review- but I think people should know about this doctor. I just got all of my wisdom teeth removed by general anesthesia. The procedure couldn't go any more smoothly. Staff were knowledgeable and very sweet. When I came out of anesthesia I was told that there could be swelling for 3 days, doctor also prescribed me heavy duty pain killers. Then I recovered soo fast, It was amazing. Bleeding stopped in a couple of hours, and I could eat pretty much whatever I wanted afterwards. I also experienced no swelling or pain whatsoever (I ended up not using the prescribed pain killer). I was in such good shape, i went out with friends. I even had 2 slices of pizza at 2AM in the morning. Today is the second day of recovery, it seems like someone magically removed my teeth without any side effects. On the financial note, I had Vital Savings Plan from Aetna and it got me about 30% discount on the whole bill. I strongly recommend that you guys visit this friendly and capable surgeon. I wish i could give him 100 stars!!! I was referred to Dr Hoghooghi by my dentist.. I was orginally scheduled to have all 4 teeth pulled out but i didnt wanna pay the huge deductible so i opted to have the 2 worse ones pulled first. I showed up to my consultaiton and Dr. H went over everything that would happen, possible complications, etc. I have really bad anxiety and on the morning of my appointment I almost chickended out. I took my valium before I left the house and my boyfriend reassured me a million times i would be okay. I showed up my appointment and I was taken in the back and prepped for my surgery. I am happy to say everything went GREAT! I havent even needed to take the vicoden. I have been taking the ibuprofen and the antibiotics... I have mild soreness on the extraction side but that is to be expected. i have minimal swelling and the rest of me feels great! I would like to give all my thanks to Dr. Hoghooghi and his team of excellent nurses and assitants.. everyone made me feel so welcome and secure and I am actually not going to mind having the other 2 pulled out next year :) If anyone is looking for an excellent oral surgeon with an excellent support team... I was referred to Dr. Hoghooghi after getting a rather severe case of periocoronits (inflammed gum) from a partially erupted wisdom tooth. His recommendation was that it and a horizontal bony impacted wisdom tooth come out before they cause further problems. Day of surgery: I choose general anesthesia and it seemed like I had just fell asleep for a quick nap. When I got home I popped a 600mg ibuprofen for the pain. In hindsight I don't think I needed it. There was some soreness on the bony impacted side but kinda expected when they have to drill your jaw to pull out a tooth. I chose to forgo any more painkillers for the rest of the week. The pain was more a dull soreness on that side and nothing on the partially erupted side. Recovery: I get my stitches out tomorrow. 1 week on from the surgery and no pain. Follow the instructions to the letter and if you have both bottoms out, take your time moving to solids. Use the medicated rinse even if you can't open your mouth to brush. No rice or things with seeds until dry socket is not a concern. All and all Dr. Hoghooghi exceeded my expectations and I would recommend him in a second. Honestly, I've had more pain from a deep cleaning than this removal. read more

Great dentist! Everything went smoothly. I was a little freaked out by the surgery because I've never been knocked out before, but the nurses managed to find a vein easily (which is tough on me) and I went off the sleepy land. I woke up, got picked up by my friend, bled for the next few hours, but that was it. I think it is the best outcome you can hope for when you have dental surgery. I only got two teeth out and I can tell, four days later, that one side is very healed and the other might have mild dry socket, but I have very little pain overall (except for in the morning, which is mostly my fault because I'm a stomach sleeper and smash my face into the pillow all night). I would definitely recommend Dr. Hoghooghi and I will be going there sometime next year to get my other two teeth out! UPDATED I downgraded my review to four stars after I went to my check up. My appt was for 12:15, and the dentist was finishing up from a surgery. The guy in surgery got picked up by his friend at ~12:20. Dr. Hoghooghi is AMAZING. He removed my 4 wisdom teeth that were full bony and one side had to have bone grafting. I have zero pain tolerance and was terrified. Dr. Hoghooghi let me ask as many questions as I wanted and never rushed me, even when I repeated some because I was so nervous I would forget the answers. He never seemed annoyed; only patient and understanding. He allowed me to have the surgery done in SF (really nice office there) and follow-up appointments in Palo Alto where I work. Everything went smoothly. I have complete confidence in him and would not be scared one bit if I needed to have more oral surgery done in the future. Dr. Hoghooghi is as good as they come. He is experienced, practical, and a very good and clear communicator. I have a form of leukemia, and needed to have an implant procedure done on short notice -- doing the surgery on a normal schedule would have bumped up against the start of my cancer treatment, heightening the risk of infection. Dr. H immediately grasped the situation, scheduled my procedure for the following day when he would normally be booking months out, and had me in for multiple follow-up visits to ensure I was healing properly. I cannot overstate how impressed and grateful I am to have received this level of treatment from a physician with whom I had no prior relationship. I cannot recommend anyone more highly. read more

I had put off getting my wisdom teeth removed for four years. Dentists said to me, "You'll need to get those out. You can't clean them properly", to which I replied, "I'll get them out when that becomes a problem." It became a problem. I asked a friend, who just had her wisdom teeth removed, if she recommended her surgeon. She had nothing negative to say about Dr. Hoghooghi, but for confirmation I checked Yelp as well, and was pleasantly surprised. Two days later I had an appointment for a full mouth x-ray, and two days after that I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I was sedated by 2:30, awake and wisdom tooth free by 3:30, and walking around quite competently by 3:45. The pain was minimal, even after the numbness wore off; ibuprofen was enough to take care of it. Most of the swelling seems to have been prevented by the large dose of IV steroids that they give everyone. It's now 3 days post-surgery, and while I have a headache and am still a bit sub-par, this was as pleasant an experience as I could have hoped for. Five starts for Dr. Hoghooghi. Only downside? They wouldn't let me keep my teeth. Apparently there's so OSHA rule about this. They would have made such cool jewelry too. read more
