Alexander's is good and consistent. I looked at some of the other reviews here on Yelp and the "downticks" seem to come from vegetarians. I'm not a vegetarian so I can't review it as such. The restaurant is a better-than-average general type restaurant. Good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Prices are reasonable. And unlike some other general-purpose restaurants in the neighborhood, they serve alcoholic beverages. The menu is huge so there is always something for everyone. They have a special prime rib (Fridays or Fridays and Saturdays...I'm not sure) which is very, very good. Service is always good and friendly. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner tonight at Alexander's Cafe. My husband had the fish fry and said it was wonderful. He likes to try out different places for fish fry, and he said this was the best. My daughter had chicken fingers, which she devoured, so I guess that's good. She's a teenager, so she didn't say much about them, ha ha. I really enjoyed the chicken caprese. It was delicious! The atmosphere and service were nice. The only minor complaint that is really weird is that the chairs were slightly too high for my short legs, so I couldn't put my feet flat on the ground, making for an uncomfortable evening. My daughter, who is three inches taller than me, also had difficulty with the chair height. All in all great food and a good time! read more

We a frequent flyers on yelp and this place was more than the best in my yelping experience! They had the best variety of foods for breakfast and brunch and if I had not been driving home to Wisconsin, I would have enjoyed one of the many bloody Mary's! Our family of 4 enjoyed every meal! Swedish pancakes rocked, special menu salmon Benedict and shrimp salad were to die for and the Mickey Mouse pancake with chocolate chips hit a home run with our 7 year old! Staff was so friendly we all joked about driving 5 hours this weekend just to come back. On top of all this, some amazing person payed it forward and paid our entire bill! Truly amazing experience! Being the 2nd time here, might be my last, first time great food great service, friendly fast, just awesome. Today... As I'm standing outside while my family eats, my pancakes served cold, waited over 40 min with a 2yro old, had to ask, for refills, had to ask for them to bring the baby's food, super cranky at this point, me and and the baby, now he won't eat, so wasted that money. I am completely angry at my experience today. Just terrible all the way around. Not even busy. Update. **$60 later my pregnant daughter is vomiting from reheating the refrigerated left overs, that tasted like they say under a heat lamp (they did) I saw the did as I looked for our server to get my son's food, saw out did sitting there, they says they were making the sauce for my pancakes, why not bring everyone else's then mine?? I've been going here for years and it is still exactly the same. Greek style dine offerings with great salads, soups, sandwiches and desserts. It's location off I-90 tends to bring in weary travelers and truckers but it's never crazy busy and service is pretty reliable. It was my first time here with my wife and kids (5 and 2). Overall I had a great experience. Service was great as well as the food. We ordered the spinach dip and it was delicious and made with fresh ingredients. For our entree's we ordered the caprese chicken and the white fish (blackened). Both were cooked perfectly and arrived in a timely fashion. I ordered the fish with rice and vegetables. The only criticism I have is that the fish lacked spice and salt and the broccoli was more than aldente and could have used salt,butter or both. We will be returning to Alexandra's again with or with out the kids and I will recommend this place to all my friends and family. read more

Stumbled into this great restaurant on our way home from Chicago. What a great surprise! Looks pretty generic from outside, but once inside very cute and comfy. Their menu is huge. They are also a coffee house and bakery. Everything looked excellent. I had their berry chicken salad. Great! Generous. I had half of it for lunch the next day. My parents both had their fried chicken special with herb potatoes. They both said their meals were great and I tried the chicken. Top notch. We had great service and if I was in the area again I'd for sure go back and this time I would definitely order pie! read more

This was our first time here, I cannot believe we waited so long to go! Our server, Melissa, was great! She was quirky and fun, which made the experience that much nicer. Very nice interior, very clean and welcoming. Service was great and friendly. I had one of the daily specials which was corned beef and cabbage. The only thing that could have been better were the potatoes. They were very small pieces of potato that appeared to be oven baked instead of using boiled potatoes. Good stuff with Greek and American fare. The roasted garlic appetizer is PHENOMENAL. The staff is great and there's never a wait because it has plenty of room for seating. We visit a lot; almost every time my Dad comes over. They have a wide variety of gourmet teas and their soups are rich and tasty. I always order the Prime Rib 14 oz always at this restaurant, this last visit was disappointing why? I was served the end part of the Prime Rib mostly salty area, plus was placed on a smaller plate not the normal big lunch or dinner plate when we order it, very small scoop mashed potatoes half what I used to get and vegetable. The side of rice was so small portion half of the saucer not the normal portion. I get end up taking it home big portion of the Prime Rib as it was salty. After eating the waiter asked me if I want any desert and I asked him what do you have. His response was "you should what kind of dersert we have" did not even check, then I ordered carrot cake he said they have it, he came back they don't have it there was no delivery of desert from the place they order it that day. I love this place! I used to go here back in the day with my high school friends for coffee and tea, just to hang. The feel of the place has definitely changed since then. And while I do prefer the old look of the place, it makes sense that they would change it to kind of "keep up" with everywhere else. Though, it seems like since they've deviated from the old diner/family restaurant style atmosphere (and menu), and classed it up a bit, they aren't nearly as full with patrons as they used to be. I never get anything besides the breakfast food...and it's delicious. Their portions are huge (especially their omelettes!). They will modify for gluten and dairy allergy without any scoffing. I usually never have a problem with the staff here...friendly and attentive no matter the amount of people dining there at the moment. We were once here at night, and I thought they served breakfast at night (they don't). My son wanted their caramel french toast (seasonal menu item which is SERIOUSLY THE BEST FRENCH TOAST I HAVE EVER HAD) and I wanted an omelette. The waitress offered to check with the chef to see if he would make us breakfast food, and he said yes. We didn't ask her to check, she just did it on her own...good service! The last time I was there it was quite busy and my boyfriend ordered the steak skillet with no dairy, and they accidentally brought it out with cheese on it. It had to be sent back and by the time he got it we had already finished our food. They also forgot my fruit, and were out of the tortillas for the chilaquilles. Alexander's Cafe just reopened after being closed for several months for a complete remodel and update. This definitely needed to be done, and my wife and I were quite happy with the results. The new interior decor is modern and beautiful. The tables are nice wood, and there is nice stonework throughout the restaurant. The outside of the restaurant was also completely redone and looks very nice. As part of the update the name has been slightly changed from Alexander's to Alexander's Cafe. The menus were completely reworked with many new choices that they did not have before. I had a delicious omelet with roasted potatoes, which was very flavorful. My only complaint was that the pancakes that were served with the omelet were the smallest pancakes I have ever seen from any restaurant anywhere in the country. When I saw them, I was very surprised because they were about half the size of other restaurants in the area. My wife had a chicken skewer salad. She liked the taste and said her only issue was that with the chicken being on skewers, you did not get as much chicken as if the chicken was an entire chicken breast on top of the salad. My wife and I would like to suggest that you eliminate the mason jar glasses. We have never liked them, and were hoping that they would be tossed in the remodel. It was kind of funny that nearly every other possible thing in the inside and outside of the restaurant was updated and modernized, but the old style mason jar glasses were kept. We simply don't like them. Enough said about that. The service was good. Our server checked back with us several times during our meal, which was appropriate. All of the employees we spoke with were very friendly. All in all, it was a very nice visit. We will definitely be back. read more

My boss and I stopped in here for lunch after a client meeting in the area. When we stepped into Alexander's, we were asked if we were here for breakfast or lunch. We both went for lunch, though the poster sign of the apple pancake looked tempting. I ordered the schnitzel special, with a decent breaded pork cutlet, so-so spaetzle and mixed veggies. The lunch also came with soup or salad plus a bread basket. I opted for the French onion soup, which was the tastiest part of the meal (and it should be since it had a 75 cent surcharge). Boss goes for the chopped steak with mashed potatoes along with bean soup, and he ate it all up. There were some Greek specialties on the menu too (flaming saganaki in Elgin??), though if I had ordered one I'm not sure if our English-challenged waiter would have figured it out (I asked for water and did not get it, and he may have tried to upsell me on a potato even though I alread had veggies on the plate). I guess you can have a slice of pie or cake for only a buck along with your meal, but we were in a hurry so no dessert. read more

My wife and I went to Alexander's on a recent Sunday morning for breakfast. Though she had been there a few times in the relatively recent past and spoke highly of the "new" place, it had been many years since my last visit. Back then the food was decent (if unremarkable), but what really stood out in my memory were the tired, much outdated décor and the ubiquitous multi-page tome of a menu so common to family restaurants. WOW!! What a change for the better!! There is a fresh, contemporary feel as soon as you walk in (no more worrying that someone was going to ask to see my AARP card at the door...); clean, open and modern, but still warm and inviting. We sat at a booth which was both spacious and comfortable. Since it was about 8:30 am we did not require any bar service, but the bar does look well-appointed and ready to provide whatever potables one might desire. Gone was the Encyclopedia Britannica-sized menu, and in its place was a one sheet (two sided) bill of fare which showed their breakfast and lunch offerings. While traditional eggs & meat and eggs Benedict are still reporting for duty, there are many fresh new offerings as well - it is obvious that a great deal of time and thought went into creating an exciting and vibrant menu that features interesting ingredients that you normally don't see in the run-of-the-mill breakfast places. Good luck finding chilaquiles and fig & walnut pancakes in any of the other family restaurants around the area! On a side note - I read a review here where someone bemoaned the lack of biscuits and gravy - I grew up on b&g and I love to eat them, but I didn't miss them at all on this menu (I had a hard enough time making a choice as it was!) I finally decided on the Alexander omelette, which contains applewood smoked bacon, spinach, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions and goat cheese. The vegetables were fresh and cooked perfectly; onions sweet, peppers cooked until tender, and the spinach heated but not turned to mush. I chose the hash browns and toast to go with it, and they were both delicious. My wife went with the chilaquiles (tortilla chips simmered in salsa verde) with chorizo and eggs, and was very satisfied. Now, my wife is from Mexico and knows what REAL Mexican food is supposed to taste like; her seal of approval on the chilaquiles says more about the quality of the dish than this gringo ever could, so take her word for it! Throughout our time there, our server was quite friendly and attentive; she made sure that we always had full coffee cups and checked in on us frequently. When my wife sent her eggs back (long story short, my wife prefers her eggs burnt - truly, honest-to-goodness, full-on crunchy-burnt - so she does have to send them back to suffer longer from time to time), the server was accommodating and apologetic. Incidentally, the eggs were finally immolated to my wife's satisfaction Another thing we noticed (which might seem unimportant to some, but which impressed me) was that when the server brought us hot sauce, it was not just the usual single, sad bottle of Tobasco, but a selection of several sauces in a caddy. I have always hated regular Tobasco sauce, and it was nice to have a choice. This is the kind of subtle detail which so many places overlook, but which is a direct reflection of the establishment's focus on customer service. Kudos! Overall, I would highly recommend Alexander's, and I look forward to many more meals there!! read more
