Have been coming to Salado for years and finally reserved us a table to dine. Wonderful cozy setup to chill. We literally had to chill as service wasn't great. We sat over 20 minutes before the host came to say our waitress was running a 12 top elsewhere but he brought us water which was nice. They had some menu items out, finally were able to order drinks. They forgot one that didn't come out until dinner almost served. Food brought to table and when dinner almost done our sides ordered finally came out. Our waitress missing throughout but she was kind enough to take off our sides and the cocktail due to time! I don't mind paying a higher price if the food is good. This has been one of the best places we have eaten in town. We were seated promptly and Amy was a gracious server. She was patient (as we took our time talking instead of reviewing the menu) and pleasant the whole time. She was very professional and we wouldn't have known this was her 1st brunch had she not mentioned it. The food was great. I didn't get pics of all of everyone's food but everyone enjoyed it and said they are glad they came. All are planning on returning. Upon leaving I had a good conversation with one of the bosses and he told me about the upcoming plans for Alexanders. It is always disappointing to me when I go to a nice restaurant for a charcuterie board and what I receive I can purchase from HEB. For $32 I expect more than lunch meat and mediocre cheese. Nice restaurants should give you artisan meats and artisan cheeses. The complete lack of blues, the use of box crackers etc is does not reflect the quality I expect for this price point. I have eaten here before and this feels like a big change. I truly hope this is not what to expect in the future. On the positive side this place is an amazing little environment, the staff is polite. However, if you can't get the basics right I am not sure about the more complicated menu items. read more

Maybe is pathetic to say, but I'm so proud of myself for finding this place! I went on a Sunday afternoon, right after church. They had indoor and outdoor seating, and it was a relatively lively brunch atmosphere. My waiter was helpful and polite, all of the staff was very sweet. I sat down outside and after about 5 minutes worried it might rain. The staff let me switch seats without much ado about it. Drink menu was awesome and my food hit all of the right spots. I came upon this place because I was looking for a restaurant halfway between San Antonio and Dallas to meet some family. I'd never really stopped in Salado but I'm really glad to have learned about Alexander's. The restaurant location itself is quite picturesque with a view of a creek when sitting on back patio. I had pets with me and they were very accommodating and provided water bowls for them, already ready, when we walked up. The food itself was wonderful. We started with crispy Brussel sprouts with sauce on the side. My mom said they were the best she'd ever had and I found them to have a great balance of being crispy but not overdone or dry. On top of that the portion size is great. My dad got the crab cakes to start and said they were basically stuffed with all crab. For our entrees our table had the ribeye, porkchop, and salmon. The steak was well seasoned and cooked as requested. The baked potato that came with the steak was also very well done. I ate everything, including the skin. I tried the pork chop and thought some pieces were a little dry but the flavoring was good. I also tasted the salmon and I probably would have ordered it medium rare but it wasn't my dish, and considering it was cooked more than I would have liked it, it was quite tasty. We all decided we would come back and I love that it appears to be close to the town square. I would consider making a whole day of exploring the town and ending with a delicious meal at Alexander's. read more

Absolutely the best brunch we've attended. From the gourmet salad bar to the charcuterie buffet filled with wonderful meats and cheeses, then the sweet and savory bar featuring succulent eggs Benedict. Then you get an entree that is a full meal all by itself while sampling a bourbon cocktail. As you think you can't possibly eat more, you notice the dessert station. Everything was fresh and plentiful. Our steaks were cooked a perfect medium rare, as ordered. My wife's chicken was moist and she loved the mashed potatoes. And my salmon was a perfect medium rare. There is a reason this has become one of our favorite restaurants. And kudos to our server Mark. He's taken great care of us on multiple occasions. read more

New Year's Eve Dinner was way overpriced. Over $250 for two people, (No Drinks) and set menus. It was a $35-40 meal tops. Waitress didn't even bring out soup or salad out prior to our meal. There was a floating thing in the bottle of water and they charged for a cup of hot water with a Lemmon. 20% gratuity was included and there was still a tip request on the receipt. Beautiful location and lovely views from the dining area! However, the food was subpar; the tablecloths were stained; service was extremely slow; and they substituted different items on the menu. For example, I ordered the trout with roasted acorn squash. Instead, they gave me a small, salty piece of cod. Likewise, my partner's sourdough bread was replaced with plain white toast. This review is not about the food, we were never asked what we wanted to eat or drink. This is a review about the service we received. We came in at 6:40 PM and were instantly drawn in by the wonderful feeling of this restaurant, we, my husband and I joked that if the cocktails were good we may need to get a room at the inn next door. The hostess, who was lovely told us she had a perfect table open for us and she led us to what was the most beautiful dinner spot we have sat at for a long time. Bubbling creek, deer walking enjoying the sunset as much as we were. We held hands and selected what we each would get, salmon for my dear husband and lamb chops for myself. We planned on sharing an oyster appetizer. Our waitress asked us what we would like to drink, it was 6:45, we told her we didn't receive a drink menu, she let us know that the drinks were on the other side, we giggled and she said I'll give you a couple minutes to decide, smiles all around and she walked away. Again this was at 6:45, 2 other tables came in shortly after we did and they were both told about the Tuesday special as they received their menus, we didn't get told what the specials were or that they had specials on Tuesday when we received our menus. At 7:05 we gathered our belongings and left our table asking another waitress for the manager. We recounted that we were forgotten/ignored and the manager did offer to fix the issue but I'm afraid it's a job too big for her to fix. We have been through this before and will go through again we are sure. It is upsetting that this happened and sadly we are not surprised. We believe our waitress saw us and believed stereotypes and figured we wouldn't tip her, silly rabbit we go in setting our tip at 25% everyplace we dine at. read more

Firs time here. Was pleasantly surprised by Salado and their restaurant offerings! This little historic inn on the creek was a quaint setting and the food did not disappoint. Quite a varied menu- something for every palette. Scallops, chicken, trout, duck, salmon, ribeye, tenderloin, meatloaf, gnocchi, porch tenderloin.... I'm sure I'm forgetting some. The salmon and the duck were delightful. We also loved their mushroom soup and their rolls were so delightful! The plates are sized well- just enough to avoid waste but not overly large portions that gorge you. The bartender was able to accommodate our drink requests and did a great job- Mexican martinis and a basil gimlet. Ended the night on a unique cobbler type- it was a bit more cake like (or bread pudding like) the pie crust but it was still fabulous. After dinner we sat out back by the creek and enjoyed ducks and deer within feet of our chairs. I would certainly return and we're so glad we located this little spot! read more

Tucked away from Main St in Salado on Center Circle, Alexander's is on the grounds of the Inn on the Creek and right next to Salado Creek. Alexander's has 2 main floor dining areas, 1st floor outdoor dining, a 1st floor bar, a 3rd floor bar & lounge, 3rd floor outdoor dining, as well as a private speakeasy area. We went with the 3rd floor lounge/bar area. We were seated at a low table with cushioned chairs with armrests. I ended up swapping chairs part way through our dinner as the padding was not up to par, but we were there for almost 3-hours. We shared a Charcuterie Board with various meats, cheeses, crackers, pickled items, and spreads. I can't provide an accounting of what was on the board, as it wasn't listed on the menu and we weren't told, nor did we ask. We thoroughly enjoyed it, though. We enjoyed wine by the glass with our meal. I chose the Antigal Uno Malbec and she went with the Wente Estate Chardonnay. Both were well priced, $11 and $9, respectively and were good choices. The Malbec was fruity and dry (not sweet). For dinner, I selected the Seared Scottish Faroe Island Salmon. It was served skin-on with sautéed Baby Kale, an Acorn Squash purée and a chipotle honey sauce. The sauce was more sweet than spicy. My first bite was a touch salty for my taste, but I enjoyed every bite after that. She chose the Braised Lamb Shank. It was absolutely fall-off-the-bone, no need for a knife. It was paired with Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Baby Carrots & Zucchini, and a pear, lime, & pistachio Gremolata. Service was friendly an attentive especially considering the bartender had to serve the bar, the lounge, and the outdoor area. This is a slow dining experience. So, if you're the impatient sort or want/expect everything right away, you may be disappointed. Relax, slow down, take a deep breath, and bring someone whose company you enjoy and have a great time sipping the beverage of your choice. As I indicated, we ate and drank slowly. It was as much about the conversation as it was the meal. All of the tables around us were engaged in lively discussions, as well. By the time it was all said and done, we were there for 3 hours and could have stayed longer if we wanted dessert or more wine and it wasn't a "school night". read more

I ordered the lamb chop lollipop special for the night and my husband had the shrimp and grits. We both had the wedge salad, and for dessert creme brûlée and bread pudding. I didn't get a picture of the bread pudding but it was made to order and was a shareable portion. All the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely be back.
