I have to say I absolutely had the best chopped steak I have ever had in my 61yrs of life. 16oz of flavor, tenderness with a lite char, softened by the gravy and onions........ Last time I did the same with pulled pork. I liked the brisket better and they did not disappoint on the meat. Their sweet tea is good. Not as sweet as I like but probably better as it is. The meat melts in your mouth! I am the kind of girl that cuts off all the fat on steaks, but when everyone told me to try it on this steak I did, and OMG...unbelievable. The seasoning and char on these steaks are done perfectly. The fried okra was the best. The potato salad I wasn't a fan of, since it is on the sweet side (and I like my potato salad salty). But, that just means I have to come back to Texas to try another side ;) Drinks are great. Atmosphere was awesome. This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. My wife and I order the catfish with potato salad and fries. Never got fries the catfish was cold greasy and like rubber so I don't have to say how it tasted waiter brought food and never came back by the way this was all you can eat night. Finally another waiter came by brought ticket I expressed my feelings about food and service. Also told her I should not have to pay for the fries we did not get. She said I'm sorry but they won't let her do anything about it. So I assume Johnny's owners think they can treat and serve you any way they want maybe because they think they are the only game in town. Absolute worst disappointment at this place. While I'm not a fan (too salty for me) there is a full bar and lots of choice, so I am always able to indulge in an adult beverage too. We had to wait a few mins for a table as we arrived at 630pm on a Saturday night so that's expected , sat down and our server was quick to arrive . We knew we wanted the steak night so we ordered right away. We sat in outside which I think was called the cantina , it was packed out there but our food arrived very quickly and the steak was perfect ! Garlic bread was deliciousssssssss my mashed potatoes were boring and both my wife's and my Mac and cheese came out not very warm . That's ok it still tasted good and wasn't worth complaining about I recall the brisket from last time not being the greatest so I'm pretty sure I'm gonna stick with the steak from now on, we'll be back ! Been here multiple times but always forget to review. Multiple visits must mean they are good enough to come back to for me. The BBQ and huge burgers are some of the best in the area and the vibe is always lively with the friendly people and staff. The service is great although it can sometimes be a small wait for a pickup order which is to be expected considering the amount of tables that stay full. We were craving some Texas BBQ later in the evening, and Johnny's immediately stood out. They were open later, well-rated, and personally recommended by a friend's brother who lives in Salado. It definitely lived up to the hype. Johnny's has three dining areas: a traditional side, a livelier side, and an outdoor section. For food, we ordered a brisket baked potato, a brisket plate, and a BBQ combo plate, along with the jalapeño bacon-wrapped appetizer. The appetizer was excellent, not too spicy unless you hit a seed, and packed with flavor. One detail we really loved: the BBQ sauce is served warm. It may seem small, but it makes a big difference, and you can tell they care about the experience. The brisket was tender, not greasy, and not dry; exactly how Texas brisket should be. With the full size chicken fried steak, a pint of cobbler and two soft drinks it was over $40. The price was shocking but we were expecting delicious food and boy, was it a disappointment. The chicken fried steak was mediocre. It was very chewy and flavorless. The gravy was OK but nothing special. It seemed exactly like a generic Sysco food service type gravy. The mac & cheese was ungodly. It tasted like they were blending in a processed queso type cheese, and it did not work well at all. It almost tasted spoiled or rotten, it was not edible at all. The tater tots were surprisingly crispy and nice, but how do you screw up tater tots? These guys used to be a five star steakhouse in my opinion. I've eaten here more than once a month for the past five years or so, and have always enjoyed it. Before you read, understand the owner CUSSED ME OUT for trying to relay an issue with the food. The first time I've EVER had an issue with a steak at Johnnys was last night. I ordered a steak rare and ended up with a raw refrigerator cold steak. I gave it a shot, understanding that rare is what it is, but as I ate more the steak became more and more inedible. I made it through about half the steak before the internal temperature went from pretty cool to refrigerator cold. Remember, per USDA guidelines, a steak must reach an internal temperature of 120 degrees to be considered rare. This steak was served to me at 60 degrees or less internal. This came as a surprise to me, as Johnnys has never served me a bad cut of meat. I only mentioned something to the waitress once I had eaten about half the steak. I didn't expect much, understanding that I had eaten a good portion of the meal, and I hate to complain about somewhere that I love. I was told there wasn't much they could do, but they had a manager come out and talk to me. She took a small discount off my bill of 116 dollars that brought it to 96. I wasn't very satisfied with that, but I walked away and didn't think about it. I spent the rest of the evening sick. I still feel sick the next day almost 20 hours later. This was when my girlfriend convinced me to call the store and ask for a refund on my steak. I called the store and was eventually transferred to the owner, Josh. Josh was standofish about the quality of his steak and defended the fact that his steak was cooked properly because he was "standing there when it was fired". He told me "it sounds like you should order medium rare next time". He told me that "if I had said something while I was there, he would have personally spoken to us and made it right", however I WAS there and I HAD said something and he was nowhere to be seen. When I told him I had been sick for most of the night, he told me "Bulls**t". "I haven't had anyone ever complain about my steaks". This is behavior unbecoming of a restauranteur receiving a complaint about the quality of his food. I was told my story kept changing, but I would be refunded anyways. Josh argued with me about MY EXPERIENCE with HIS FOOD. I did not call for a refund. I called because the food I've grown up on did not meet the most basic standard of being cooked, and I wanted to ensure that the restaurant didn't continue to serve REFRIGERATOR COLD RAW STEAK. My attempt to help correct the issue was met with a poor attitude and a cocky, hubris filled response. I was cussed out for relaying my experience to the owner, who should not only be proud of the steaks he serves his community, but also humble enough to accept criticism from others when the dining experience is subpar. The raw steak was enough for me to consider not returning to Johnnys after being a regular for almost five years now. The owner cussing at me for relaying my experience is enough to dissuade all of my friends from returning to Johnnys, as I now see how this man treats his guests. Josh, I'm sorry for whatever bad Tuesday you've had, but you lost a customer for your poor attitude today. I'm disappointed in you, and I'm disappointed in your standard for yourself and the way you treat others. read more
