Fun place to see live music. The ID checker at the door is really rude though. Owner needs to CHECK him.

I live literally down the block and around the corner from this bar, but I was still treated like sh*t, even after stopping by twice within the same evening and being cordial and polite. On my 2nd visit, I asked the guy checking IDs at the door whether there was a cover. He said, "not yet, there isn't," and let my boyfriend and I inside. We walked up to the bar and then realized we were being trailed by another employee. The 2nd employee starts bugging us about a cover charge. I explain that the guy checking IDs already told us there wasn't a cover charge at this point in the evening. (Mind you, there were roughly 10 people in the bar and no signs of any bands/performance acts setting up. The place was as deserted as it was when I dropped on earlier this Saturday.) This 2nd employee kept trying to deny what the ID-taker had informed me, and then a 3rd employee came up and told us to leave. We weren't being violent or obnoxious or even drunkenly argumentative, just trying to understand why the bad information we had been given was being blindly enforced by one employee and not another, and why there was no explanation or rationality involved in their conversations regarding this rather simple matter. Not much point in reviewing a bar other than for the management to hear what people coming in have to say. I generally really enjoy drinking and hanging at Alex's, but the karaoke guy on Tuesday nights is super condescending and a huge asshole. Was super snobby to be me when I did karaoke and seems to be a on big ego trip. Maybe you guys should've kept him fired the first time after he consistently criticized people's drunk karaoke performances. Such a cool spot deserves someone who isn't a fucking prick. I loved the vibe of this bar! I can't wait to go back and enjoy another show. The prices were good too! I've been meaning to write a review about this place. I've been here about 4 different times hoping for different results but this place is just consistently awful. This review isnt just about a one off night but just how it is there. Lets start with the good to be fair. They have 1buck beers on some nights and the bartenders are really nice. Now the bad. Parking sucks if you cant park by the bar you gotta drive way down the street in some seedy area and prey you dont raped or stabbed on your way to the bar. Once you get there you are greeted with a mix of people. Mostly early 20somethings just learning to drink with a chip on their shoulder getting sloppy. So long story short no positive vibes here. There are a few older people that are more chill but they're in the minority compared to the collection of tryhards all around. The decor is random but its so dim it doesn't really matter. The bathrooms are gross they consistently are out of soap and papertowels. What the bathrooms are stocked with are bitchy broods that bite your head off for accidentally bumping into them as they hog the mirror. Other bathroom surprises include crying trainwrecks, yelling drunks, and people doing drugs. I thought this places saving grace could be it's karaoke but that's the worst part. The song selection is super outdated and limited not to mention the karaoke host is a total tool. I found out on my last visit that he only plays songs he likes. All this info is according to one of the female bartenders who works there that admitted that he skips everyone else if it's a song he dislikes. Wish I knew that prior. Everytime I've come I requested karaoke songs and waited til closing never getting called seeing others who placed songs after me singing. I don't know why I gave this place so many chances it's just disappointing. One of the times I came it was my friends Birthday he requested a karaoke song long before I arrived and was never called. He patiently waited for hours and he told me people who requested songs after him were singing. I felt so bad for him. I went to the karaoke host who didn't seem even slightly professional and politely asked him to please play my friends karaoke song since he'd been waiting for like 3hours and it was his only Birthday request. The guy said he understood and he would. We ended up staying til karaoke ended never being called. It was one thing skipping me but my friend ON HIS BIRTHDAY was just an asshole move on the karaoke hosts part. All in all I would not recommend this place to my friends, family, acquaintance, or anyone else it's just not worth it. Infact I tell as many people as I can to avoid this place like the plague. I know this place is on Tru Blood, and overall it is a cool place to hang, but the service and the way they treat customers are terrible. Being loyal customers for years, you would think that we would get treated with basic respect and common courtesy. Last night my friends and I went, and although we did not sing karaoke, noticed the person running the karaoke had a tip jar. My friend, upon noticing the he looked miserable, decided that she would take the rest of her change in her wallet and put it in the tip jar. Around 2 minutes later, we had noticed a shower of change being dropped upon us, in our drinks and all over the table. Then, he proceeded to yell at us, telling us how rude we are and how we are terrible people for giving him change and that it is completely disrespectful, and then tried to have us kicked out. As paying customers this is completely unacceptable. WE DIDN"T EVEN USE HIS SERVICE!!! My friend gave him the last of her change out of the kindness of her heart. I worked as a barista for almost 3 years, and Im used to giving people pennies and nickels and having them keep it, not even putting it in the tip jar. Im shocked that he would have the audacity to throw change and yell at paying customers, and the bar tenders and managers did absolutely nothing about it. We did not come out to support their business and then be made to feel less than human. They lost the business of me and my friends, and we will never come back. read more

And after last Friday, I may have found my perfect little playmate in Alex...who was arrestingly androgynous...was it a "he?" or was it a "she?" So many mind-altering characteristics of both! With Alex, ANYTHING goes! Alex has all the charms of a favorite dive. The "she" will lure you inside of her using her potent drinks and decor hanging from her ceiling. The "he" will continually egg you on to take that second, third, no...fifth shot of the evening and dare you to smash an empty can of Pabst Blue Ribbon on your forehead. The "she" will blow on you from above (the ceiling fans were heavenly) while you're panting away while the "he" whips you around on the dance floor. And the "he" will keep you standing under those heavenly ceiling fans while he cracks you up with his jokes...afterall, what "he" wouldn't wanna be blown (down upon) all night, right? Alex is also a fun catch! Live karaoke on many nights (check the schedule) and killer DJs that'll spin ya some funky tunes. When you're feelin' saucy, snag yourself a place in line for the photo booth, which is only a couple of bucks! Just be prepared to push hard and pack yourself in there...Alex's photo booth is still a little tight. And if you're really feelin' saucy, snag yourself a place on the outside patio. I wasn't privy to this, but from what I was told...ANYTHING goes...just the way ya like it out there. Overall, Alex is quite the little playmate. Pull up, push your way in, stay awhile, dance the night away with some fellow yelpers, make a few friends while downing a can or three, and just be ready...rough and ready...for the fun night it's gonna be! *wink read more

Since joining Yelp and its merry legions of various personalities, I have discovered a few wonderful things....... 1. There are some Yelpers who share my intermittent love and fascination with the delicious world of porn. Don't worry, your identities will not be divulged under torture nor drunkenness. 2. When I joined Yelp, I read many bar reviews and other places described as dives. Hell, to me a bar was a bar. You enter, drink, shoot the shit with your homies, and flirt with members of the opposite sex with hopes of gettin' some. My experience at Alex's last night sharpened my definition of the phrase "dive bar." One walks in and discovers that the Halloween motifs haven't been taken down. The barflies here seem to love that. Then you encounter the chicks at the bar who are drinking their Pabst Blue Ribbon with straws. Then comes the concrete floors and the one lone table in middle of the joint that acts as a big coaster for everyone's drink. The seats and sofas on the wall and the quirkly clad clientele that use them further Alex's argument as a dive bar. The last thing that cements Alex's divey status is the question that is rolling around my head as a write this and I am sure that the Yelper who attended last night's UYE can relate: Carlos K: Look to your right. Okay, I'm sold. Alex has it's positives and its negatives, but the sheer energy of the crowd packed in this place makes it a fun place to be. Negatives first. The place is really loud. When I say loud, I mean REALLY loud. Too loud to enjoy at times. It also takes a while to get a drink, but this is probably due to the large crowds more than the bar staff, which is a fun bunch. Parking is non-existent if you don't get there early, and God help you if you decide to park at Auto Zone. Positives now. Drinks are reasonably priced. I've never had to pay cover. The place is built for live music. The times I've been there have been good shows and entertainment. Good size can accommodate a lot of people. All in all, Alex's is a place I don't not want to go to. You'll see me there again. read more

Alex's Bar is so ironic. A dive bar, that offers an obnoxiously wholesome sing-along environment. I really don't get what the hype is with this bar. In theory it sounds fun. Karakoe, live band, full house etc.... But for some reason its never fun. Even after having tried it several times. Even after getting trashed once. Even in good company, it has never ever been fun. Drinks are served in plastic to-go cups. It makes me feel like I'm at a house party back in high school...um no thanks, totally not the kind of night Im looking for. The bar-staff is painstakingly unorganized and they dont seem to really have the desire to hustle back there. The bathrooms are an STD party in other words, DISGUSTING. The smoking patio has all kinds of random trash sitting in the corner and get this, NO DRINKS allowed outside! (even though its enclosed.) The crowd is a weird mix. You got your OC kids heavily dominating, next are the bachelor student types with their tall cans in hand, and lastly are the locals from around the neighborhood. The cover band proudly plays obnoxious and terribly played-out music, to which the kids sing along to. It's all very wholesome and contrived. To me not worth the $5 cover charge. Get me to a dimly lit bar where I can have a grown up conversation and a drink in a real glass, from a bartender who's not totally worn down by the crazy crowd, please! Chalk up another one. If it wasn't for Yelp ... I would probably never have stepped into Alex's Bar. Consider this a 5 star of 3 star reviews if that makes any kind of sense. It's kind of hard giving this place a 3 star review because I don't remember smiling so much for a long time. Was it because of the red mood lighting and photobooth inside Alex's, was it because of the Flock of Goo Goo's that was performing that night or was it because of the group who were there with me dancing and singing along with the band? Either way please consider this the most fun 3 star venue EVER! For me, coming to Alex's bar is like going to a new school on your first day. At first you don't fit in but when you leave, you're a much better person for attending. If you're lucky you'll make some really good friends. It doesn't hurt when you go with a bunch of Yelpers. I think I need professional help after coming to Alex's Bar. I just saw a grown man turn from Prince to Billy Idol to a member of the Vapors in the same night, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The $10 cover charge and $5 24oz cans of Tecate and Pabst Blue Ribbon were so worth it. Considering this being a 3 star review ... if someone asked me to come back to Alex's Bar, I would say yes faster than Hugh Hefner filing for divorce when he found out viagra was invented. This place is AWESOMEEEEE! So I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to anything sci-fi (especially anything vampire makes me all giggly inside) so when I heard that Alex's was having a Fangtasia night I almost lost my shit. I came in my Merlotte's Waitress outfit, ordered my True Blood, and stood in the front to see/hear Jace Everett play. Location: kind of in the ghetto of Long Beach but it's like 15 mins away from my house so I can't complain. Parking: I did street parking, they also have a lot that's free but keep in mind it's very small so arrive early Cover: $10 bucks when there's someone playing (cash only) Time: I got there at 8 PM expecting to hear someone play around that time-opening acts are on around 9 and main around 10:30-11 PM (from what I remember) Food: Literally outside Alex's Bar there's a hot dog vendor. I recommend! Drank: Holy Shit- My friend got a rum and coke for $5 bucks. It was the size of a red cup (you know) that was mostly rum and no coke. Photobooth: B&W Old School $3 bring your cash money! Size/Decor: Reminds me of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland but X-rated. This place is fucking huge-great place to bring a crowd of people. Crowd: No fake looking people= yay in my book! How have I not reviewed Alex's Bar yet?!? This place isn't just a Long Beach institution, it's also the stand-in for fictional HBO vampire bars, as well as the monthly home of the greatest live 80's karaoke band this side of the 405 freeway, east of the 710... ok, so I've never seen another live 80's karaoke band other than Mister Mister Miyagi, but they're a trouserful of fun. You'll just have to trust me on that. In fact, it was during a Miyagi show at Alex's where we met what eventually became some of our best friends in Long Beach... and where I learned a great parlor game we called "Closer." It works best in a crowded space, like, say... the dance floor at Alex's. The object is basically to stand as close as you can behind the person in front of you - with bonus points awarded for increasingly intimate and freaky dance moves being incorporated. It's provided many an awkward moment of hilarity, but it's great to break the ice with strangers on the dance floor. Sorry if you've been victimized... but if you liked it, you're welcome I guess. Speaking of strange, Alex's has also been the site of numerous UYE's, whether during a Miyagi show, Phil Shane, or random DJ nights. Mrs. Q and I have celebrated birthdays, holidays, even had some engagement pics taken here, so Alex's has been an ongoing factor in why we love Long Beach. Anytime a Jimmy Dean sausage sandwich, Top Ramen, and a raspy voice are part of my day before 9am, I know I've had a good time the night before. Why is that I discover gems like Alex's Bar only AFTER I've moved out of Long Beach? This place is a rollicking good time and I it's on my list to come back and see Mr. Mister Miyagi. As it was, I happened to go on a Phil Shane night (hot damn!) and behold the glory that is his 80s & 90s adult contemporary set. The bar itself feels surprisingly roomy, but that's probably because you're not expecting much from viewing this place from the street. Wait, you actually CAN'T view this place from the street, save for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it door. The entrance is in the back, but you'll want to park on the street because you have a slim-to-none chance of finding parking in Alex's small lot. And DON'T park at Autozone; they WILL tow you. I discovered Framboise here thanks to Mike Q., and between that and the chocolate cake shots, my night was made. The music was loud, the crowd was pretty diverse and having a great time, and one of the bathroom stalls smelled like vomit. What more could you ask of a dive? read more

I'm guessing like a lot of people, I came to Alex's Bar because its Fangtasia on True Blood. And like true movie magic, the actual place is a lot smaller than it appears on TV; but you can recognize many things from the show from the rear parking lot to various parts of the bar. With my TV-nerdyness aside, I have to say this place is a pretty cool dive bar. There's unique decor throughout and a there's even a stage area for live bands. Unfortunately I came quite early in the day so it was pretty quiet, though not empty. I believe they have many events throughout their calendar, and there's a cover charge at night when there are various live bands playing. I would like to come back during a busier time to get the true vibe of this place. Sadly the parking lot is extremely small. Even coming here early the parking lot was almost full. And thanks to Yelp I knew to not park next door at Autozone! read more

Here are some things I like about this bar. 1. It is very close to my house 2. The drinks are very cheap 3. Alex doesn't ever punch me more than once or twice. 4. They let me in 5. All the bartenders have graduated from accredited bartending schools 6. They let me DJ some times. 7. The doormen are larger than me 8. Eh, this place has been a let down for me. I really want to try and like Alex'e, but it simply has been a bust lately. As mentioned, drinks are served in freaking plastic cups like it's a frat party. I don't want to pay a cover to listen to people sing karaoke, I don't care if there's a live band backing them up, I'd rather have a dj. Simply not worth a five dollar cover charge IMO. You guys are really milking it. I don't like the fact that I can't bring my drank out to the smoking patio, which I might add is fenced off like a dog run... Even with what seemed like 5 bartenders working one bar it still took like 15 minutes just to get a drink. So, I'm probably not coming back here any time soon, if ever... This place is way overrated. I hate Alex's Bar! I went there last Thursday with some friends after work it being my first time there. We had to pay a $10 cover, which would be no problem if there was actually ppl in inside. It was a ghost town. We got there to hear the last 2 mins of there set and they were done, which ment there was no more $10 cover.. it was shady to make us pay to get into the bar when we werent even there to see the band. they did not want to give us our refund so we left.. we got juked out of $40 at the door. Came here on a Tuesday night at 9:30pm (during karaoke night) and it was really pact. Giving it two star because it takes forever to get a drink at the bar. There were a lot of rude people cutting and there were not enough bartenders to accommodate all the people trying to get drinks. Plus there was over an hour wait to sign up for karaoke. For what it's worth, this isn't worth going to and there are plenty of other bars in Long Beach that have better servers and karaoke than this place. Wouldn't recommend this place at all. read more

After all these years, I finally had the chance to come check out a good ole fashioned punk show at Alex's Bar. I came out last month to see CH3 and Manic Hispanic, and had one hell of a great time. Let me start off by saying, yes it's a total dump and far away, but then again what do you expect. We got totally lost and had a hard time finding it, but that's completely our fault. I ended up being the DD after the original driver got trashed before me, so I'm assuming the bar isn't too expensive. They have PBR tall cans, which keeps all these dirty punks and rockabillys, and of course my friends coming back for more. The stage and sound are actually pretty decent, and all of the decor is pretty neat. There's lots of room for dancing and moshing, and the view isn't too bad at all. You know just be careful after all the booze starts making it's way to the ground in the pit area. I had a great time watching people eat shit in the pit time after time, haha. I also found the crowd here pretty diverse, lots of older and younger folks, but everyone was very friendly. I actually think there was no fighting, which is very surprising at a Manic Hispanic show. Ladies, the restrooms are pretty fucking disgusting, but then again like I've been saying what can we really expect here in the good ole LBC. Oh, and there's only parking for like 10 cars, so street parking it is. Do not park at Auto Zone or you will be towed, and the hand stamp at the door makes sure to remind you of this, lol. I would definitely come back and check more shows, but they did charge a $12 cover which I thought was a bit much for this dump, boooo! read more

There's so much room in this place and if you go to see a band, you can pretty much see them from anywhere you stand. The bartenders are friendly and the crowd is too. I've frequent this place enough that I feel compelled to review it. It totally kicks ass!!! It's my most favorite bar. The local bands are loud and rocking! The drinks are strong and greases my inner party girl! Kudos on the photobooth! Evidence of a good time when you can't remember the next day. The artwork is dark and sexy. Lots of boob distraction for your drunken stupor! The bartenders are nice when you can flag 'em down. I came here with some buddies, Brian B and Jill B, for Mr. Mister Miyagi 80s karaoke night this past Saturday. What an awesome concept. Live karaoke with a band to back you up? If I knew more 80s rock songs I would've went on stage and handled my bidness but, unfortunately, I was only 6 years old by 1990... and at the time I was listening to New Kids on the Block and Stevie Wonder. Anyway, I really dug the style of this joint. Random decorations (i.e. skulls, disco ball), the $5 tall boys, pool table, wi-fi (even though I don't have an iphone or internet on my phone), and the jukebox. Oh my god, I'm the old person talking about a bar being too loud. Get me my cane and let me be on my porch. There are some great points to Alex's bar. Mainly: there is no cover, the live band backing the 90's karaoke on Saturday nights is legit and there is a guy with a food truck in the backyard of the bar flipping some kitchen-sink style burritos and quesadillas. So far so good. Howsoever, the volume is OUT of control. My very hipster Mexican coke bottle was vibrating near my teeth every time I went for a swig. Eardrums physically hurt. Kidneys were doing the macarena. But hey! Not to worry, you can buy a pair of earplugs at the bar for a dollar. Done. Of course, then you're bouncing up and down with your friends near the stage and all of you are plugged up and nobody knows what's going on, but yo, it's just another Saturday night in the LBC. What's great about this bar: huge. fits plenty of your friends, your friends' friends, and tons of creepy Long Beach alcohlites to hit on all your friends. cheap drinks with heavy pour. the bartenders know how to take care of you. fun amenities like photo booth, video game machine, pool tables, air hockey table (is that still there?), jukebox and sometimes i-pod playlists from the hip bartenders, and plenty of places to smoke outdoors. the "ehhh" features: it gets extremely packed on the fun nights. i can no longer have fun on those nights and if you aren't friends with the bartender, drinks can take up to 20 minutes. small parking lot for these busy nights. DON'T EVER PARK IN AUTO ZONE! they will tow. the sound there isn't the bestest, but it's ok. great for a dive bar, but mediocre for a venue. can i mention the ridiculousnessity of the place when it gets packed? it turns into douchebag central. be wary, make backup plans to go somewhere else at midnight. otherwise, VIVA ALEX'S BAR! read more

Well I guess it was about time that I made it to Alex's Bar. I mean, for years I've heard about the killer rock and punk shows here, the good drinks and tasty brews, the awesome jukebox and the cool people that hang here, so on Saturday I finally made it over here and ya know what, this truly is the perfect dive bar. I loved the red lighting and the Jesus stuff and the devil decor and the fact that in certain parts of the floor your foot will stick. I loved that the booths had duct tape holding them together. I loved that there were awesome drawings in the bathrooms. I loved that the pool table was missing balls and I definitely loved that the jukebox was in fact, awesome. Is there anyone who doesn't love Alex's Bar? I mean, I may have been biased before going in because I knew Kealoha and Sheri liked it. And I had read the reviews and knew about the photobooth, live music, and dive-y aspect, which made this place already right up my alley. Then Hazel told me it was the Fangtasia bar and that was just another interesting fact. But, then something put the experience over the top for me. Alex serves Sofia. Nothing says I'm a classy lady like drinking champagne from a can using the attached juice box straw. And now, I think I'm in love. read more

I wish this place was closer to my house. Unfortunately, it's 40 miles away. LOVE THIS PLACE. Went for the first time to see a show, and I will make every effort to see bands here. It's a great venue for music as anywhere you are is a good spot. Bartenders were really nice and it wasn't expensive. They have a great beer selection and whatever mixed drink you're in the mood for. The patrons were also awesome. Just writing this review makes me sad that I live too far to frequent Alex's Bar. If you're in the area and not a douche, check it out! No silver lake hipsters!
