Very cool hidden tiki bar! The decor is great, really sets the vibe. Not too busy on Thursday night, but not dead either. Sat at the bar for drinks and appetizers. Not super attentive service considering there were only a few parties at the bar, but our bartender (woman with long wavy hair) was kind and made delish drinks. The coconut shrimp was great too. Karaoke started a little after 8:00pm. Not sure if that's a regular thing, but it was fun to watch! Happy Hour is only one hour a day on weekdays (5-6pm) which was a bit of a bummer because we arrived at 6:30 and thought it went until 7 or 8, but now we know. Would be awesome if it was still 5-8pm like it seems it used to be. Overall a fun time and we'll likely be back! read more

We recently visited Secret Island Tiki which has been on our list for a while. It is located on the corner of Broadway and Pine under Shannon's. We parked in the multi-story parking garage behind Hamburger Mary's. Secret Island is a little over a block away. You can make reservations on OpenTable. It has a bit of a speakeasy entrance, as it is not plainly marked. Look for the staircase going down with greenery around it and the Secret Island sign downstairs. Go right at the bottom of the stairs and there is a little walkway where you see a very cool tiki display. It you stay there long enough, the lights will flash and you will hear thunder. Walk a little further and go through the door to enter. I was blown away by the atmosphere and build. Kudos to Bamboo Ben! It is dimly lit with a ton of cave wall, bamboo, thatch, netting, tiki lights, floats, skulls, tikis, and other décor. The bar is loaded with bottles and looks great with dark blue and green backlighting. The bar top is wood with deep cutouts that are filled with clear epoxy. The booths in the main dining area are little tiki huts and even have clouds overhead. There was great tiki music playing the whole time. A few times an hour a thunderstorm hits. The lights dim, lightning flashes with thunder sound effects, and red lights illuminate cracks in the floor that looks like lava veins. There is also a photo-op "Pele's Throne" which is a big lava rock surrounded chair. We sat at the bar and had the coconut shrimp appetizer ($12). The shrimp were breaded and cooked well, and had a coconut sprinkle on top. The spicy dipping sauce complemented the shrimp well. I started out with the Drunken Monkey (Makers Mark 46, Jamaican rum, banana liqueur, cinnamon, allspice, Angostura bitters, normally $19, $17 during happy hour). It was somewhat bourbon forward with a little funk from the Jamaican rum. I definitely got the cinnamon notes with a little banana and allspice in the background. She started out with the El Capitan Hook (Del Maguey mezcal, pineapple, banana liqueur, Luxardo cherry liqueur, lime, $17, $15 during happy hour). This was smoke forward with light pineapple and banana flavor. I had the Hula burger ($18) which was very good with a lot of different flavors from the various toppings. It came with a decent amount of fries, and was a filling plate. She had the pineapple bowl fried rice and added with BBQ pork ($17 + $5 for pork add-on). It is served in half of a scooped out pineapple and had a good amount of rice with pork and green onions on top. It had a good mix of teriyaki sauce on the rice and BBQ sauce on the pork. Next, I had the Rum Runner (coconut and blended dark rums, banana liqueur, raspberry, grenadine, pineapple, orange, lime, $18, $15 during happy hour). It was very pineapple and coconut forward which overpowered all of the other ingredients. She also had the Let That ManGo (white rhum agricole, coconut, mango, lemon, $18, $16 during happy hour). The primary flavors here were mango with some grassiness from the agricole. We were here from about 6pm to 8pm on a Wednesday night and it was pretty dead with only a few other people in the place the whole time. They do have a stage in the back with live music acts, so it is probably busier when there is entertainment and on weekends. Our first bartender was Alex who was nice but we barely talked with him. Manager Pedro took over the bartender duties later on and we had a great time chatting with him. Service was great from both of them. The drinks are a few dollars above average, but if you come during happy hour, the drinks are several dollars off. Happy hour is currently all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and Thursday through Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. The food was good, the drinks were ok to good, and the atmosphere was great. Normally, this would probably be a one and done, but I really liked the build and would like to come back when it is busier, maybe on a weekend. read more

Today me and a girlfriend had a Tuesday night out. We hoped to watch love island @ another tiki bar on Anaheim but tickets were sold out. In my opinion the pike is really dying out, while this is a specialty bar / tiki bar it was sooo empty. The inside is lovely upon entering and could be a very fun birthday experience or bar experience. The bartender her tonight was not kind at all. My girlfriend and I came in excited, however we were not greeted. Honestly, at first we asked if it was open (looked really dead inside.. like really really empty). He had a snarky comment and we had to stop and glance at each other. The look of "do we leave?". We sat at the bar top, he tossed over some menus, took our order and was really not happiest. It ruined our mood, and our intention was to stay and enjoy a drink or some food. However the atmosphere wasn't welcoming, almost uncomfortable. We only stayed for one drink, and they're all $20 each. Trying to cocktails was nice. I definitely recommend heading to the other tiki bar in Long Beach - better crowd - better service - welcoming. It is within walking distance of the convention center. At 5:30 on a Monday night, there were more bartenders than patrons. Was in Long Beach and came across this place, sounded fun so we decided to go check it out. First, walking into the venue, a lot of fun, thunder and lightening, tiki items, feeling like you're going through some old jungle, just fun. Inside is more of that same tiki vibe for about half the venue, the other half is set up with a large TV to watch games as well as an area for karaoke. Now, to what matters, the drinks. Drinks were delicious. Even the Zombie, which typically has around four different rums in it, with one being over proof rum, was flavorful. And the Lapu Lapu bowl hit, and stayed flavorful despite ice melting. Never felt watered down at any point. The food was fairly straightforward. We tried a few items with the sliders, fries and coconut shrimp. The shirt best was decent while in a Hawaiian room, the shrimp was also decent, very fried and crispy, while the fries had a different cut to them and came with ketchup and ranch. For really wasn't memorable but the drinks were great. Definitely a good find in Long Beach if you're looking for a time bar with a nice vibe and tasty cocktails. read more

I love a tiki bar, and this little Long Beach hidden spot is a good one. There are no signs for this place, you just have to know it's under Shannon's on Pine. We went at 8:30 on a Sunday night, so it was pretty quiet, although parties were coming and going. They've done a great job with the theming--it looks very Polynesian. There's is a fun lava throne, Lord of bamboo, and lots of tiki totums. It was decorated up for Halloween, but the look was still definitely tiki. And when the thunderstorm hits and the lights flash, notice the lava lines on the floor! You go up and other and pay at the bar, then someone will bring your drinks and food. We ordered: *Zombie (cocktail) *Drunken Monkey (cocktail) *Floor is Lava (cocktail) *Loco Moco x2 *Kalua BBQ pulled pork sliders We all really liked our drinks--the Floor Is Lava was delish!!! The first time I went to secret Island I wasn't impressed. It was a daytime event and most of the lights were on. It definitely benefits from low lighting. I had a good time. The band, The haikilu hot shots (sp?) was great and the company was better. The service leaves a lot to be desired. It wasn't crowded but took and inordinate amount of time to get a drink. The bartender was not friendly (tall, dark haired dude). My friends heard him call out someone's food order and he followed up with "PICK UP YOUR FUCKING FOOD!". Not joking. The female server couldn't handle multiple tabs so part of our party had to go get their food and drink at the bar instead of table service. Ridiculous. Arguably the very best tiki bar in Southern CA. Look for a stairway going downstairs in front of Shannon's in downtown Long Beach. You'll find the entry door next to a cool waterfall surrounded by lush tropical greenery as thunder booms and lightning flashes. Once through the door you'll find a large bar and many tables surrounded by decor that provide the tiki atmosphere you hope for. It's dark but not overly so. I was there on a weekday shortly after opening so it was happy hour and on the quiet side. Well, not exactly quiet as the sound system was blasting both punk and classic rock. On weekends they have live music and a lively crowd. The bartenders were friendly and spoke to me about the upcoming entertainment for the month as well as past events. I ordered a house cocktail - Ron's Rum Runner. Banana, cherry, coconut, raspberry, and lime along with plenty of rum made this a spectacularly wonderful tiki drink. This place knows how to make a cocktail that'll make your eyes light up. I also ordered pork sliders from the happy hour food menu. These 3 sliders were simple but tasty with delicious pulled pork and slaw between Hawaiian rolls. If you like tiki bars or just need something fun and different, this is it. Place is located below Shannon's, with meter parking throughout their downtown area. As you go downstairs, their oasis set up just before the entrance is cool with lightening and thunder, making for a cool entrance. We sat towards the front of the bar to get a view of the band but not too close to their speakers. Ive been to a few tiki bars and this one was far better than the others. We wanted to try this cute hidden gem, but when we went in the Sunday before last, there was one person visibly working, a Bartender, and apparently he was too busy to ever look up and say hello to any of us, let us know that he would be right with us or anything for that matter so after standing in line for about five minutes with no eye contact, we figured he didn't need our business. I tried most of them and they were all amazing! We had coconut shrimp, fries, grilled chicken and moco loco burgers and sliders! All the food was tasty and good portions. Our server Brent was so nice and attentive. My only criticism is I really wanted the chocolate lava cake but were informed the kitchen had just closed 6 minutes ago. We were in Long Beach for a visit to another bar and when we happened to walk by Secret Island we remembered it was on our Tiki Tour list so we decided we would swing by after our first spot. For off the ambiance is five stars. Perfect vibe for what you want in a tiki bar. Had a cool lava floor and you'd hear a storm once in a while... something to similar if you remember Rainforest Cafe. lol Our service was top notch, had a great server and he was friendly, attentive, and great with tips and recs. While we were there it was Happy Hour, and while we didn't get any drinks from Happy Hour we did order the food options. There were some pork sliders, fries, and coconut shrimp. All food was great bar food and we enjoyed it! Now the drinks... this is where I'm deducting a star. As a regular tiki bar goer all over the US, ambiance and drinks are always top of mind. We felt the drinks were just ok based on the standard recipes we are used to. Painkiller was good, Zombie didn't taste like a typical zombie to us, the Pele's Fire was a really nice take on a tiki drink. I am a tiki enthusiast, and this Tiki "speakeasy" has been on my list for quite a while. Every time I pass by this tiki, there's always a long line outside so I'm always tempted to brace myself and look for the parking in Long Beach just to go down there, however after in driving circles looking for parking, I always end up not going. I finally showed Up on a week day and I was quite surprised to find how easy it was to find parking right in front. In fact, all of pine street was empty! Super weird. Anyway... made our way to secret Island and to my surprise there was absolutely no line. Went up to the podium got our IDs checked and made our way downstairs. The entrance is pretty cool. There's a themed tunnel that you walk through before entering the actual bar. When we entered the bar, I was surprised to see that it was completely empty. So empty that I thought the bar was actually closed. There was one female bartender there and we actually had to ask her if they were open which she replied yes. It was almost like we were happy that we were able to get in there and see the ambience of the place and experience it without being shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of strangers, but at the same time, it was weird being the only people in the bar. So we sat at the bar took In The vibes ordered some food, grabbed a drink and walked around took some photos and needless to say I don't think I need to go back. I am glad that we stopped by. I can check it off my list, but it is much too big for it to be a traditional tiki bar. And I think now I've come to realize that the really long line that I've always seen when driving by wasn't actually for secret island but more so for the bar that is upstairs. Regardless, while I was there, I needed to use the ladies room and found that I was not the only one in there. It was a bit of an awkward situation when I found myself cornered by a few cockroaches, and as I was leaving the restroom, there was one dead waving goodbye to me as I left. I guess the experience was just not happening that night and even though maybe it was just an off night it was enough for me to not need to go back. The drink was OK but nothing all write home about and the food just tasted like every day bar food. Now, if this place is on your tiki list, yeah sure come by check it off, but I don't think you'll need to have to come back again. read more

I will never ever come here again! I was so excited to try this place and made reservations online for my fiancé's birthday. Walked in and no one acknowledged us. I told the bartender we had a reservation and he acted like he couldn't care less and didn't want to be bothered...just told us to sit wherever and to come order at the bar when we were ready. Why do they even take reservations if there's not table service? His whole demeanor was rude and annoyed from the get-go, as was the only waitress there too. When I went back up to the bar to order, I listed one of the Hawaiian Polynesian food entrees to which the bartender put his hand in my face and went "hold on"...he went and spoke to someone and came back and rudely said "We're pretty much out of everything unless you want burgers and fries." GOD FORBID WE ACTUALLY WANTED TO EAT THE VERY TYPE OF FOOD THE ESTABLISHMENT IS SUPPOSED TO BE KNOWN FOR. I turned right back around to my fiancé and said "F*** THIS PLACE! Let's go somewhere else!" WOW!!! Not since Sam's Polynesian Village have I been so enamored with a tiki bar! SERIOUSLY - LONG BEACH AND SURROUNDING TOWNS - this bar should be filled nightly! Secret Island should not be kept secret! Daaaaang....or should it?!? I suppose if I want an uncrowded bar with Trader Dan's sweet original and familiar melodies playing to my appreciative swaying groove then, yes, secret works. BUUUUT... if I want the business to thrive and be there for me when I need my regular tiki fix, then I'm sounding the alarm. If you love/live/imbibe the tiki vibe, GET TO SECRET ISLAND! Walk or ride share. These tiki drinks are legit! I have been excited for this tiki spot for a number of months now and FINALLY added it as part of our staycation to the LB Hyatt Regency. After dinner at Ruth's Chris(see separate review, please) we walked a bit further up Pine and down the stairs under Shannon's Irish Pub. I have visited this place on and off, for years. It is a trusted sweater that is always somewhere in my house--- in the closet, below a pile of others clothes, or in the hamper. However, when I am ready to embrace its comfort it is always ready to serve, feel familiar and I trust it will do right by me and my needs. If I abandon the sweater metaphor I can honestly say that this bar is versatile in how it allows me to have a good time. For instance, this one night, I was there by my lonesome, and the bar was only slightly attended on Karaoke night. This one dude went up, and belted a version of "What a Wonderful World' that felt meaningful and sung by a person with talent. I felt like I was in an episode of one of those shows where life is a musical, and a song and dance routine was choreographed for my pleasure. His version of the song, really reminded me that our world is wonderful. I felt the tune, I simply did not hear it. And that is a specific instance on how this bar had an opportunity for me to enjoy life within in its basement walls. You have to walked down a flight of stairs to get to it. But the bar always has embellishments and delights to keep my eyes dancing and my interest piqued. Just yesterday I saw decorations of Angler fish (I think those are the ones with a light on hanging limb that stems from their forehead) but were skeletons. They should have been Halloween decorations but, they were not, they were daily decorations amidst the Island beat of this bar. The lights twinkle, the entrance has an Island volcano scene that comes to life with thunder and toil. It is truly an immersive joint that helps you escape to a paradise- not every single time- but enough times to make this place feel like an escape to a tropical, coconut paradise. And no, I have never worn a Hula skirt and swayed by hips to Luau music. But maybe one day. One consistent treasure of this place is Andy, like Warhol. He described himself like that, not me. Which is refreshing because most people will say my name is Andy, like in Toy Story. He and I talked last time about how I took the bus from San Pedro to Long Beach because an Uber was no 40 dollars to get me from point A to point B across the bridge. I speculated on how, before I used to take Ubers as a necessity for safety, I am not trying to drive tipsy. But now, an Uber had become a luxury. So I took the bus. I commented on how the middle class was disappearing and my bus rides were proof. He explained that he understood and gave me his own reasons as to how the economy pressured him into choices that I will not expand upon, as these are his to share. But for minutes, when I talked to him, I did not have conversations about the weather or dodo birds, we had a pleasurable conversation that seemed more like a friendly, intriguing chat. And I crave those, when they are authentic. Andy, also makes the best Lemon Drops. They look like a lemon sliced made into a stunning drink. The rim is sugar, but somehow lemon green. This one time, I went to the bathroom and my Lemon Droo was gone. Did I drink it? Did they take it away? I commented that to him, and he made me another one- no questions asked. I felt like I was a minor celebrity. He even apologized for the missing drink, even though I made have drank it. That is a classy act. He is a seasoned bartender, who is tired, but still comes to work to play. So I guess I am trying to say that a reason why this bar is the highlight of a night is because of many things including him. read more
