This was my first time back in a while. The black and white photo booth is great, but drinks were very expensive. The bartender charged me $18 for an Aperol Spritz. $9 for a few ounces of Aperol, $9 for a sparkling wine on top. If he didn't want to make that kind of drink, that's ok, just let me know so I don't spend $20 for a drink. I won't be going back anytime soon. read more

Fellas night out and my friend highly recommended it. Convinced to the hype we checked it out and had a jolly time! I am glad they had a pool table because though I was vibing the music and company I wasn't in the mood to go crazy and dance but I enjoyed the setup. Seating in the back if I just want to introvert out. Drinks were pretty good and ranged from cheap to semi-expensive. The live music was pleasing as well. Ambiance: * Parking | Street parking or plaza parking. * Seating | Seats can house about 30 people. No need for seats cause most of the time you are jamming to the live music. * Feels | As we entered, my eyes were caught to the far corner as there was a huge crowd screaming and dancing. The performers were charismatic and talented. Afraid of the semi-craziness happening we chilled at the back as we played a game of pool. They have a tv but they were playing silent movies. Customer Service: * Servers were cool and helpful. Overall: * 4.5 Stars. The entrance fee was about right and the vibes were good. A quality dive bar that provides all the fundamentals. Fuck this place! We had such a bad experience at this place last Thursday, watching sacred souls. Staff does not communicate. All over the place. Staff selling tickets was extremely rude. I got in an argument with the lady selling tickets because of a misunderstanding, would not listen to reason even her own security staff was trying to cool her down. When you post that extra tickets are available online after a sold out show and your staff is unaware there is a problem. The only saving grace were the security guards, they acted like gents and the bartenders were really nice. Otherwise management doesn't care about paying customers. If you want to get treated like shit and disrespected come to Alex's bar. Where no one gives a shit about you! Cheers! read more

Great bar and venue for punk bands or any music/bands for that matter! First time here and saw a band called Cheap Shotz. They were so good a little punk back from Upland. Would def check this out for a drink or just a good time.. Long Beach never has parking but this bar you enter from the back and there is a parking lot. read more

Great Punk Ambience Venue. The service is great but parking is mostly side-streets. But that's Long Beach!

I came here recently for a free concert that was put on by Alex's Bar. The concert was set to start at 9pm so our group gets here on time. (*Not my choice). When we arrived, the bar was empty. :P The band actually didn't start playing until around 11pm. Once they got started though, it was good. The crowd here that night was a little different but everyone was friendly. There is minimal seating at this bar but we managed to find one of the few tables that were there. It was a little hard to find at first, and you will NOT be able to see it driving on Anaheim Street. So it'd be better if you parked your car, and looked for it on foot! The entrance is in the back! Great bar, tons of different kinds of beer. IT got a little chilly in here event with all the people inside. I'd come back. read more

The drinks were OK, the inside (sound set up, overall vibe, etc.) were OK, the bands were GREAT. But man, the bouncer that was at the door (middle-aged, black), his attitude STUNK. Like in the 2 minute interaction we had, so much sass, attitude, and rudeness that you would've thought he was a 13 year-old girl who just got her first period. I get that this is a punk bar, but you don't let your employees treat paying customers like that! Another thing is that the show/door prices are very confusing. For example, there is an upcoming show that's advertised to be $20 in advance and $25 the day of. If you look on DICE (the app the tickets are sold on) it's $25 (and the show is in 2 months). If it is DICE fees, then those fees must be inconsistent because the price differentials are ALL over the place when you look at the various shows. It's not just DICE either, when me and my wife went, we were expecting to pay $25 (because it was the day of). It was $32, which wouldn't be so odd if they would just be honest on the poster. Overall, everything was O.K. with the exception of the bands (f****** fantastic), the service from that one dude with a stick up his butt (not fantastic), and the inconsistent prices! read more

The first time at Alex's was for a Reverend Horton Heat show and reverend show, and the venue, and of course the Reverend, did not disappoint. I've seen several Reverend shows in larger and smaller venues, but Alex's energy was the top three. The Reverend knows the history of Alex's and played one of his better shows. The crowd knew it as well. Walk-in thru the back, and there is a long bar immediately in front of you. The stage is in the southeast corner with a large SRO area in between the two. Bartenders were working hard, and I never had to wait long to get a beer. Laminate bar top with a wooden rail. The back bar is mostly bottle shelves. Classic decor throughout. Cannot wait until COVID is over to go back. read more

November 24, 2018. This a great dive bar. We had so much fun. The DJ was off the hook last night. They played a lot of 80s dance music. Also on the big screen they also were showing all the old 80 movies like Valley girl and a few other ones. Had a great time at the Reverend Horton Heat show. Shared it with my grandson who just turned 21. The place is funky in a rough neighborhood. It was standing room only. The audience was good and well behaved. The velvet portraits that decorate the walls are hilarious. My grandson especially liked the portrait of Satan smoking a cigarette while pooping on the toilet. I was standing in front of the small stage just a few feet from the Rev and caught his guitar pick that he threw in the air at the end of his set and shook his and. Good times! Loved this stop! I am a big True Blood fan, so that's what brought me in. I geeked out the whole time I was there. They kept the vampy vibe thankfully. The beers on tap were great. It had a nice chill atmosphere for a Thursday night. There was a $5 cover to get in. They had DJs for entertainment the evening we were there. i have loved alex's bar for years but unfortunately i had a really terrible experience last night. one of their off-the-clock bartenders, chyna, was in attendance on her night off and was drunkenly berating, antagonizing, and pushing around my friends multiple times throughout the night even though we had continuously asked her to leave us alone. once she started getting physical i asked a bartender if security could escort her out because she was harassing us both verbally and physically, they tried to deescalate her but ultimately she was not kicked out due to her being an employee. because of this, we ultimately had to leave as she was being so aggressive. it was completely unprofessional and i will not be back until this person no longer works there. it really is a shame, i have always loved this bar and have only had good experiences in the past but my friends and i do not feel safe or comfortable here anymore read more

My boyfriend is a pre covid regualar here. He loves it, and knows the staff well. We went together a couple of times before the shut down and it was great. However, since they've started opening up more we went on Friday 03/12. The bartenders were as sweet as ever, but the closing bouncer, Mark, was an absolute prick. He went around table to table with a sour attitude and told everyone to get out because he "Doesn't get paid for overtime." It definitely dampened everyone's night, and it was a good half hour before their advertised closing time for the DJs. Overall it killed a good night, and my boyfriend doesn't want to go back and deal with his attitude again. If he manages to stick around, we'll have to find a place where they treat their guests more decently. read more

The live music was great! The only reason for the one start rating is because the bar tender was extremely rude and in a horrible mood. We walked up to the bar and ordered two margaritas. After she handed us the drinks, we asked the bartender for for two straws. She rolled her eyes and walked away. After watching her make other people's drinks, we continued to wait for the two straws. When she decided to give us the straws, she also gave a strange lecture on why we had to tip her. She did not give us time to take a sip of our drinks before deciding for herself that she deserves the extra cash. When I showed her I had the money already in my hand, she just said "oh okay." My group of friends will never come back to this business because of this bar tender. She was unprofessional and killed the cool vibe. read more

Came here on Saturday (Nov 4th) for Fartbarf. #fartbarfforever Had a bit of a time getting the bartenders attention, but the price of the drinks weren't too bad. $7 for a Jameson and soda. $2 for a coke. There isn't much sitting room. A few scattered chairs around the edges of the place. Fartbarf killed it, as always. The sound in the venue was probably my least favorite part. I've seen Fartbarf 4 times now, and Alex's had the most disappointing sound quality. Not sure if it's the venues fault or not, but I've definitely heard better. The decor was pretty fun. The in's and out's are the venue were easy, which I appreciated. The photo booth worked, which is a rare occurrence. We had a good time overall. Maybe I'm being a little biased because it was the most crowded Fartbarf show I've been to, so there wasn't much room for really getting down to the music, and as I said before the sound could have been better. Plus, getting the bartender's attention was a bit of a pain, even when we were sitting at the actual bar. Overall, I enjoyed myself but Alex's wasn't everything I expected it to be. read more

3.5 stars. I don't check out bands at clubs anymore, but Alex's Bar seemed as good as any to enjoy live music. I actually thought Alex's had been around a lot longer than it has been, but after talking to a buddy I realized I had it mixed up with Al's (or was it Fender's?) from back in the day. I'm not sure if those places are still around, but apparently Alex's is one of the better spots for live bands these days. It's got rock-and-roll dive-bar ambience with its velvet paintings and what-not, along with reasonably priced libations. On a Saturday night in July I was here to see a few of my childhood friends who play in the B-Movie Rats. My wife and I arrived around 9pm, found free nearby street parking, paid our cover, and walked right in. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. We hung out with our friends for a bit, then went to the bar for a few drinks. I ordered a pint of Guinness and was happy to pay "only" $6 when I expected it to be much higher. We sat in the corner near the photo booth during the first two bands, then walked up to the stage for the B-Movie Rats. They were awesome as usual, delivering energetic rock and roll highlighted by their stellar musicianship. Obviously, I'm biased since I grew up with three of the guys, but they've always been outstanding musicians. Whether we were sitting in the back or standing near the front of the stage, we had a good view of the action. Security seemed adequate and people were having fun without being obnoxious. When things got a little too crowded for my wife's tastes, we moved toward the back and were still able to enjoy the show. The bar itself has some brutal acoustics, though, especially with the high tones. Maybe I'm too old for this kind of rock and roll, but when I learned that the bartender would give you a free set of ear plugs, I got two pair for me and the missus. While it was still loud, at least most of the highs weren't piercing my ear drums anymore and I managed to stave off losing my hearing for at least another night. read more

Alex's is still one of my old LB standbys, whether it's just a random night drinking or Mr Mister Miyagi, but Alex's added a new night to it's repertoire earlier this year: trivia night. Sure, this place may seem be the last place on earth you'd expect a trivia night, but David hosts a damn fine one there on Wednesday nights now. For just $5 per person, your team can win anything from a free round of beers to $150. Even if you don't win, $5 ain't too shabby - and they practically give drinks away Wednesday nights. $1 Olympia beers, $3 Tecate, $4 for most anything on tap, and mix drink specials too. Ah, Alex's, you've long been my Saturday night and sometimes Monday night home, but now you're my new Wednesday night home too. read more

Let me start with the good Alex's bar is a great place to go for music, check the calendar and see what bands are playing, or see if they have DJs and you will have a great time. The not so good... I've been trying to figure out why I don't love this place, when I've been going for years, and it's a Long Beach staple people always want to go here! Last night I established that the problem is... the drinks. The drinks are weak and expensive. They don't have a menu and you can order something that you think is impossible to mess up and then you find out they make it in a "special" way after you've gotten your drink. Try to return that drink and they will tell you they're just going to charge you for another one. I ended up giving my nasty drink away, but ordered a few more cocktails that tasted more like soda because they didn't put hardly any alcohol in them. So in a nutshell they're charging craft cocktail prices but serving crummy dive bar drinks. So now I personally would rather go to pretty much any bar on Fourth Street in downtown LB or on Second street before coming to Alex's just for the music and dancing. I don't mind the cover charge for the bands because the bands and DJs tend to range from pretty good to excellent. It just sucks that they don't really have any competition in Long Beach as a music venue so I suppose they don't have any motivation to improve their service or menu. read more

If I owned a bar, it would be a lot like Alex's: - Cool, dim interior with velvet Elvis portraits. - Great beer on tap. - Great bartenders who take their time to make their cocktails right. - Eclectic entertainment, e.g., pub quiz, live bands, karaoke, karaoke with live bands, good DJ's. - Located in a walkable, urban neighborhood. Good DJ's? I mean great DJ's. Just last night Alex's hosted The Secret Affair, a Northern Soul Dance Club. I'm getting all misty just thinking about it. Some more notes: - This place is definitely not just another hipster bar. I love that they have a great selection of beer on tap, and that it's reasonably priced for today's economy. Also, they still sell Oly if you go that way. - Outside food is welcome. They also serve free pizza on trivia night! Yes, you read that right. Line up early to get your slice. We're all in this together. - Parking is pretty easy for trivia night (Mondays). I'm sure it's trickier on weekends (haven't been in a while). - Eclectic, non-douchey crowd. I recently went down to Long Beach for a friend's birthday party and we (intentionally) ended up at Alex's Bar. If there's any bar I could go to which would remind me that I'm NOT in Hermosa Beach anymore, it's Alex's Bar, and you know what, I'm totally okay with that. This fact was reiterated when the bartender told me how much my drink cost. Holy cheap booze, Batman! I'm in heaven! There was a great band playing and all the mohawks and gutter-punk loincloths your imagination can muster up. It brought me back to the days of my frayed blue Dickie pants, chains hanging out of the pockets and my disastrously spikey hair which had people constantly mistaking me for a lesbian. C'est la vie. I was particularly moved though by the tall PBR cans. That just took me right back home to Tucson where the PBR can is revered by the downtown community. Pabst Blue Ribbon (on tap, or at least the tall boy cans) My friends, Alex's has all this and more! Let me give the REAL low down on this joint since the other folks managed to leave this part out. ... $3.50 for a vodka tonic and it's not watered down! I almost kissed that bartender, and maybe I should have because he was pretty damn cute. Speaking of cute, the night I went the place was filled with eye candy. I felt like I must have been a saint in a past life to deserve those boys. Karma, you are NOT a bitch. If you don't live in the LBC, it's well worth the drive. There's nothing better than listening to good punk bands, drinking booze and hanging out with interesting folks. My favorite and perhaps the raddest bar in Long Beach! It took me a while to review this place because I don't come here but a few times a year but every time is a smashing good one. I've seen good bands play here. I've come here for Halloween luckily not having cracked my head open while on roller skates, tossing many drinks back as a roller derby queen. And a few nights ago I came here for heavy metal karaoke with the music being played live. I would have belted out a rendition of Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar, but a couple of kick ass chicks beat me to it. I always leave this bar happily hammered from the generous pours of the bar staff. And there are always interesting characters that come here. I couldn't ask for a better bar to cab to and stumble home from. I LOVE Alex's....mwah! read more
