Alex's House has been a High Point staple for MANY years. It has the old school diner vibes and please know it is a CASH ONLY business. Parking is VERY limited, so if you have a hankering for a diner breakfast or lunch, get there early or postpone your visit a bit and hit when it is quieter. I arrived around 1PM or so and was welcomed when I walked in and told to sit anywhere. My waitress promptly came to my table and asked about my drink choice. Menus are already at the table. I placed my order and it arrived very quickly. It was hot off the grill and tasty. The presentation was nice as well. It wasn't just slapped on the plate. I had the 3 egg special with bacon, hash browns (which was more like diced fried potatoes), buttered whole wheat toast and I added a side of sausage patties. I'm back and forth on Alex's. It's been around for quite some time and I know locals come here often for breakfast. Right off of Main Street, it's a small breakfast diner that looks like your typical old fashioned diner. I've gotten takeout many years ago, which was good, but this review is based on the latest visit - Seating is very limited as there are maybe 8 booths (?) and a few bar seats. Kind of a head scratcher when you walk in because no one really greets you nor do you know about the seating situation. You find out you pretty much have to stand and wait for an open table and then you just go there yourself. The tables are cleaned off but I absolutely noticed nothing was sprayed or wiped down. The food itself was just ok....average. Nothing great, nothing bad. They have your typical dishes and choosing of breakfast meats and eggs the way you like. I absolutely thought something was wrong with me because I really could not taste anything from the hash browns, which were more like tiny home fries. A High Point staple, Alex's House has been around for as long as I can remember (1980, the menu says). Over the summer, my friend Jimmy and I took his wife and fellow Atlanta Yelper Angela M. here to experience a restaurant we grew up on. Nothing has changed about this place in 20 years. From inside-out, everything is the same, right down to the tiles and plates on the walls. Alex's House is a small little diner where you can get breakfast (eggs, waffles, pancakes, omelets) and well as a light lunch or dinner (sandwiches, salads, hoagies, and a few entrees like steak or chicken tenders). I'm fond of the salads, probably because I thought they made the best salads in the world in 3rd grade. There's parking in both the front and back of the restaurant. It can get busy on the weekends during breakfast and lunch hours, so you may have to wait a bit for a table to open up. Today, the food is still decent enough and service is friendly. I became concerned when I walked in, looked above the grill, and saw about a dozen gallon cans of Wesson Lo (sic) Melt artery clogger. I was afraid this would be a place that served my eggs and grits swimming in this faux butter mess. Fortunately, I was wrong. Alex's House serves up a very competent breakfast. The staff is friendly and the food was fresh (see bacon note below) and cooked to order. Eggs over easy: 3 for the price of 2. Perfect and delicious. Grits: perfect consistency and good flavor Bacon: good taste. Could have been a little more crispy. Also, it was cooked about halfway early in the morning. I know this because I saw the Cook take it out of the bin and put it on the grill to finish it the rest of the way. This is a very common practice in this industry. I'm not sure if it bothers me or not. Waffle: good and correctly done, but it was sweet only and not malty. I like a waffle with a little bit of malt in it. Tenderloin: good flavor, pan fried, nicely lightly seasoned. Slightly overcooked, it was a bit dry and a bit tough. Coffee: I was pleasantly surprised. Pretty good coffee. They also have real half and half (or was it milk?) on the table. Toast: "buttered", I believe, with the aforementioned Wesson Lo (sic) Melt cooking oil. Ick. Alex's has quite a few regulars that come in, including one bearded blowhard whose loud, obnoxious voice was exceeded only by his apparent belief that he is an expert on everything. His carping with the cook about who is the best football team was amusing to a point, but it went on a little too long. Overall, Alex's house makes a pretty good breakfast. 3 1/2 stars would be a more correct rating, but if I have to choose a whole number, I'm going with three. read more

I was on a road trip with a friend of mine, and we stumbled upon Alex's while looking for breakfast before leaving the area. The parking lot? Impossibly tiny. The inside? Now I see why the lot is so small. They also don't take credit cards, but everything is so cheap that normal people wouldn't ned to use one (normal people being those who don't use a CC for a $3 purchase at CVS). We went in on a weekend morning and the place was packed. We waited for a table to clear up, and were ushered into a dirty table that was wiped down while we were sitting (gross? just a little). We ordered juice and breakfast (I got a waffle, sausage, egg, and a side of hash browns). It was pretty good, though the hash browns were more along the lines of cubed country potatoes. Since they were so busy, the waitress didn't pay us much attention and it took a few tries to get those potatoes she forgot initially. Apparently, this was the place for many of my husband's high school friends, Daniel B included. While on a tour of HP, we of course stopped at Alex's house for lunch. Parking lot is small, but then again, if it's full, there's probably not room inside the restaurant, considering it's about the same size. While it seemed a little on the worn-down side, they did have a perfect 100 Health Rating, so they're doing the part that matters right. I opted for the large Greek Salad. It was what I would expect for a diner Greek Salad. Decent flavor, mostly iceberg lettuce, but olives still with the pits in. The house dressing comes in a huge shake bottle, which I prefer to being pre-applied. I could identify from the dressing as it separated that it was olive oil, red wine vinegar, and lots of oregano. Alex's House was wonderful for breakfast! My friend was visiting from NJ and we decided to take my kids out for pancakes last Thursday morning. We got there around 9:30; plenty of parking in the back. There were a few booths and a couple of counter seats open so we took an open booth. This place is an absolute hole in the wall with minimal seating, very friendly service, hot coffee, great prices and delicious breakfast. We had a fabulous time! My kids enjoyed the big fluffy pancakes; they were warm and had a great homemade flavor. My friend and I both enjoyed eggs (his over easy, mine over hard) along with potatoes, bacon, sausage and toast. Everything was hot & delicious. Solid Diner Food! We went for breakfast on a Saturday - it was very busy but we walked in and sat right down at the counter. It was fun to watch all of the orders be cooked and sent on their way. We got the waffle and egg breakfast and the two pancakes and eggs breakfast, with a side of hashbrowns and a side of toast. Everything was delicious. The pancakes were really good! Big, fluffy, and cooked just right! I would've given them 5 stars but the only reason I didn't was because there was nothing special or "handcrafted", meaning the hashbrowns were just frozen potatoes from a bag cooked and seasoned on the griddle - don't get me wrong - they were delicious but not made from scratch.
