We went to Tex and Shirley's on a Saturday around 12 for a "brunch" and after waiting for 30 minutes we got a table that had been open the whole time. The service was not that great, our server checked on us once after we ordered (we sat down and ordered immediately because we knew what we wanted from waiting) . It was so good I bought a bag of beans to take home with me, it was $16. Menu offering was standard breakfast fare, and all of it was good! One of my nieces had the pancakes, and I tried her leftover one, and even cold, it was good! Makes me want to know the recipe; this pancake was that good! I've been so disappointed recently with other restaurant or even home made pancakes that I've made, but this pancake was super yummy! I ordered the "Build your Own" omelette with home fries, but next time I would definitely go with the pancakes. We came relatively early, so we were able to get a table for six quickly. When we left, the restaurant was getting super crowded! Service wise, we had an amazing server, who kept bringing us hot coffee, and was patient with all our requests. When we walked in the hostess was polite and gave us a 15-20 minute wait, first available. They take your phone number and you get an update text when your table is ready. I came here fairly early on a Saturday morning and it wasn't busy (yet). From reading reviews, this restaurant has a long history in Greensboro and it looked interesting. Its in a good location and the decor is nice. Service was good. Since I arrived early, I had my pick of seats. Business did pick up as I was there longer. I had their Jalapeño omelette which is essentially a western omelette with jalapeños instead of green peppers. It was good. From reading other reviews, I understand that they mix in a little pancake batter with the egg in their omelette. It wasn't bad, but I prefer just the egg. The hash browns were just as I like them, done but not overly crispy. Coffee was good (a must have in my opinion for breakfast). I'd like to visit again and try something different. read more

I have heard about the local legend that is Tex & Shirley's for some time now. I was never able to make it out to the old Friendly Center location, but I finally made it to their new location near 1618 West. That spot has changed hands so many times, I'm happy that a business is finally in there that has the following to make it profitable. When I randomly ran into two different friends of mine in line waiting to be seated, I knew I had made a great decision. We probably waited about 15-20 minutes to be seated but it was well worth it! Their menu includes basically any breakfast item you could want: benedicts, omelets, bowls, pancakes, etc. It was hard for me to whittle down all the choices. Eventually I decided to go for my typical choice of a benedict but opted for the less usual black bean benedict. I enjoyed the spiciness of the black bean patty but still kicked it up a notch with some Cholula. The home fries that came with it were good too! Plentiful and perfect for soaking up extra runny yolk from the exquisitely poached eggs. My friends and I also decided to split some pancakes. Again we had a hard time deciding so we just got a single pancake of 3 different flavors. We got peach, blueberry, and chocolate chip. My favorite was the blueberry because it was a little tart as opposed to being overly sweet. The peach was a close second with chocolate chip trailing not far behind. For whatever reason my benedict came out maybe 5 minutes after the rest of the food. Our waitress was so generous and comped the benedict for me. It was certainly not necessary but I did appreciate it! That level of customer service can be rare to find. Small things like that make it obvious why this business has been around so long. This Breakfast/Lunch place is located in a nice little spot that includes outside dining. I like the vibes inside, decorated for Christmas time with lights and Christmas trees! We got seated outside and although it was a but chilly there was heaters on each side of the outside patio. The wait for the food was longer than expected and the food was not the best of the best. The omelette was laid over a good amount of oil and didn't have a great taste of flavor. After adding some hot sauce it had a better taste! The pancakes were fluffy however they tasted mushy in the center made them hard to enjoy. The egg platter was delicious ! The country ham and the potatoes were my favorite. I've been eating at Tex & Shirley's since they opened in Friendly Center. In fact, busing tables and washing dishes was my first job. The original location was an iconic breakfast place and popular for lunch and dinner as well. The move to the Lawndale location didn't have the same feel to me and I only visited a few times. The new location is terrific! It may have something to do with one iconic Greensboro restaurant moving into the space of another iconic Greensboro restaurant. They have retained the renovated interior of the previous two, or was it three, restaurants which is a modern rustic industrial look. More importantly, the food is definitely elevated from the tried and true original recipes. I had the jalapeño omelette which was fantastic! T&S (good thing Tex didn't marry an Anna) kept the three egg omelette made with a little pancake batter to make it fluffy. The ingredients seemed fresher and the flavors complimented each other while standing on their own. I especially loved the salsa on top of the omelette. My wife had the eggs Benedict and loved them. I tried some of her cheese grits that were excellent! Being a grits aficionado, these are as good as any I've ever had. My guess is Old Guilford stone ground grits with lots of cheese. T&S is a family-friendly restaurant and while breakfast is their thing, they do offer burgers and a few other lunch offerings. This IS the best breakfast place in Greensboro.
