We have eaten there before and generally had a good experience. This time we went for Father's Day and it was not the best. I understand it was a limited menu, But the only chicken dish on the menu came with mashed potatoes. The person who ordered was told no substitutions even though they did not eat potatoes. Unless you ordered a very expensive steak you could only get mashed potatoes as aside. My father ordered coffee after dinner and before he finished his coffee the waitress asked us if we would mind leaving because another party was here and wanted our table. Have visited here a couple of times, every time I leave disappointed. The atmosphere is beautiful but their food always lack flavor. Ordered appetizers and an entrée. Our waitress was in a rush, so we got it all together 10 minutes after we ordered. Which is fine, the food was fast! Turns out our waitress was in a hurry to get home. Totally understandable. We went to Alex place on Friday for lunch. A place that we've been to many times I can honestly say, I will never go again!!! All the food was "meh" however my order was totally disgusting!!! I ordered a "fried chicken sandwich" the description said it was a chicken breast! I received a frozen chicken patty that had been dropped in hot grease. Tasteless, hard, bread was also hard! My side was mashed potatoes and gravy. This was something Alex place really did right in the past!!! Wrong! I was served mashed potatoes and gravy that I know I've tasted at TOPs from their cold selection!! The same texture and gravy! It was easy to see that these weren't fresh and microwaved!!!! I've been here so many times, and every time the food is amazing. Most recently, I came here for lunch with a friend. I got the french onion soup (YUM) and the two meat combo. I discovered this restaurant by accident when I was picking up my friend from the truck stop because we got hungry and decided to stop in for food. We are not familiar with this area so we searched on Yelp for the nearest BBQ rib restaurant. It has been awhile since I've been to this restaurant but I remember the restaurant but I believe the restaurant ambiance had a rustic feel to it. I personally was not expecting too much but it was to my pleasant surprise. The steak on our salad was cooked to perfection and was very tender and seasoned well. We ordered the largest size rib they had available and it was very tender and was falling off the bone very easily. They serve complimentary bread with butter which was freshly baked in the restaurant. I would recommend this place if you are in the area and craving ribs. read more

After living in Batavia for a year and a half we finally made it to Alex's Place, which seems to be a Batavia favorite, and enjoyed our experience. We came about 330/4 on a Sunday and the place was already pretty full. It continued to fill in as we ate, and there didn't seem to be much of a line, but it was full. My husband and I took advantage of the restaurant week deal of 1 appetizer, 2 meals and 1 dessert to share for $40.19. We shared the clams casino which included 6 smallish clams, they were good overall, a little off on the ratio of breading to clams in my opinion but good. We each chose a soup over a salad and got the prime rib barley which was good, though the broth was a little oily. We both got a half rack of ribs as our entre, BBQ style which were good, the meat fell off the bone and the BBQ sauce was tangy and sweet with a good combination of flavors. We chose a slice of banana cream pie for dessert which was creamy and delicious. They are a restaurant that keeps it on the dimmer side, with no windows and dimmer sort of lights. The tables were close to each other, they def fit in as many as possible. There were some couches near the entrance for people to wait at which looked comfy though we didn't try them out. Went again last Saturday and the service was fine most of the food was not. wings and ribs were really dry with no flavor. prime rib looked disgusting with a really weird color and filet was dry and no flavor. mashed potatoes were good but cold. *This review is based on a pre-COVID visit* Rochester and Buffalo aunts, uncle and cousins hadn't gotten together for a while, so we opted to meet here for a weekday lunch. Surprising to see the place so packed on a cold weekday. If you're looking for a gourmet experience, you won't find it here. But I loved the place! A little overcrowded, a little grungy, decor waaay out of date. I think the retro vibe is what I liked about it. Shrimp skewers were tasty. I was pleased that a vegetable was offered as a side. And the broccoli was cooked well. I liked that there was a choice of sauces for the shrimp. Their barbecue sauce was too tame for my taste, but that's not surprising. The Rochester crew always opts for beef on weck, and they were happy with Alex's offering. And best of all? The service was old school too. Meaning it was perfect. When I see a mature person approach the table, I can be almost 100% sure that we'll be well taken care of. And we were. She was friendly, quick and efficient. The service at the bar saved the experience. I felt adventurous and ordered the filet and added a half rack of ribs. 2 bites of the 6 oz flavorless filet (more like 3 oz) and realize that was a $28 waste. The ribs were on special, and were the highlight of the meal. They are charcoal grilled and had a lot of black char that I had to cut off. The 2 sides (baked beans and Mac salad) were tasteless. We have reservations for 6pm we got to the restaurant on time o maybe 5 minutes before time. The hostess first told us the they are cleaning the table and point to the table. Suddenly we see that she sit someone else and then after we have to wait for another table rud!!! The food was excellent but we were missing a clam from the dozen that we order. We just finished the food and again the hostess came and ask us that the next party was there and waiting for the table. Passing through Batavia on our way home and we hit the jackpot when we found this wonderful restaurant. Just looking for some good food for takeout and boy, did we find it!! Being a vegetarian I was very pleased to find the eggplant hoagie on the menu and it was absolutely some of the best I have ever had. The marinara was sweet and rich with just the right amount of olive oil for body and flavor. The eggplant was perfection, with just the right amount of char to the edges. The mozzarella was just enough, not heavy handed so that rest of the flavors were overwhelmed. My husband went for the classic beef on weck and was also very happy with his choice, though after he tried the eggplant he was sorry that he didn't order that too!! The staff is awesome with a wonderful sense of humor, the food was ready so quickly I barely had time to get there from our nearby hotel. We pass thru the area several times a year when out to visit family and I can definitely say that Alex's Place is going on the list of restaurants to visit again. My wife and I hadn't been to Alex's in a while but had a gift card to use. They only do advanced reservations for groups of five or more, but do call ahead (same day reservations) for others. We arrived on time and they were't quite ready so we grabbed a drink at the bar; prices were on the low end of average. Once seated our waitress was quick to bring us the menus and let us know the specials. After a few more minutes she was back to give us some bread and see if we had any questions. She took our order and my french onion soup came out almost immediately. I no sooner finished and she was back with our food. My wife got the prime rib and it was perfect and I got one of the specials, crab stuffed haddock, and it was also great. She checked on us a couple times and was very friendly. Hello all... Just wanted to share our experience on our visit to Alex's Place on Saturday July 31, 2022. 1. Arrived, were greeted by hostess who didn't know the history of Alex's and stated that they have been open 30 years. I know it was longer that that since I had been there in the mid 80's. I believe that part of the training that the hostess and all employs should know the history of the establishment. 2. Ordered clams casino and French onion soup for appetizers. They were brought out at the same time and tossed on the table with the waitress acting like this is the last place she wanted to be at the time. The clams casino was burnt and the French onion soup was very sub-par. 3. Ordered Lobster tails and Prime Rib Gorgonzola Pasta for entrees. 4. The lobster tails were not cooked through and real butter was not served with them. An oil based fake butter substance was served instead. The Prime Rib Gorgonzola Pastas prime rib was fatty scraps that were uneatable. We reported our findings to the waitress who notified the Manager. We informed the Manager of our experience and she admitted they use that fake butter and she does not like it either. The manager took the lobster tail off the bill. The End . read more

I heard about this place I swear before the plane wheels touched down in Buffalo. I swear the pilot himself would have introduced it and handed out coupons upon exit of the aircraft if there was a will and a way. It was talked about when I arrived for work the next day, and by the 3rd day we had plans to eat here for dinner. I was excited, after all this build up, I thought I may be going to the pearly gates themselves, well the Batavia version at least. My coworker and I sat at the bar and made friends with a new couple next to us. We decided to try some of there special drinks. I tried the maple bourbon old fashioned. I was liking how it was being made until a special appearance was made by Mrs. Buttersworth... Are you joking? THIS close to the border and a reputation to the clouds and not any real maple syrup? Let alone a MIXER?? Not even infused bourbon?! This was starting off not too well. It was "Prime Rib" day so obviously I needed to try out one of their specialties. I got that with a Cesar side salad and some baked beans. The Cesar was good, hard to mess that up but you would be surprised. The beans however tasted canned. Like they literally opened a can of Hunts and microwaved it in a bowl. If they weren't canned, then good on you getting that canned taste from fresh beans. Might want to review your recipe. The Prime rib in all her majesty appeared. No side of Au Jus, or horseradish? Hmm... First bite was cold, even for a medium rare, but it got better as it went. All this lukewarm excitement for the cost of a small fortune. If this is the "best" it gets for Batavia, y'all need some more hobbies. I know for a fact it isn't the best though, as there are far superior locations just 15 minutes away. My coworker said Alex's is under new management and that may be the reason for not holding up to the standard. I've given Alex's rave reviews for happy hour specials (which are gone now, guess you can get covid from them), their drinks and of course their wonderful staff! However, tonight I ordered the 3 meat combo with baked and corn. The meats were a quarter chicken, 4 ribs, breaded shrimp. The chicken and ribs were the smallest little things I have ever had. And they cooked the death out of them, every last drop of liquid was gone. Both were so dry you couldn't eat them without water. And zero taste. The only thing that was any good was the canned corn, and frozen breaded shrimp (I think there were shrimp in there), oh and the rolls with butter. The butter!!! Was so good The only three things I've had here that were great are their soups, their clams casino (no more happy hour) and their vodka on the rocks. Oh and the servers, that's why I didn't complain. Very disappointed in dinner.. very... maybe in my top 5 worst!! Almost forgot the cheap prison silverware, looks like it came from Attica! We arrived shortly after 5pm and waited for some time. The server at the bar was great though and offered us beverages since she noticed we'd been waiting for about 20 minutes. We were finally seated and I cannot say enough about our server, Steven. He was newer, but great service and fantastic personality! My husband ordered the mushroom topped pork chops and I had the sea scallops with lobster sauce. Sadly they were out of the chicken risotto dish I'd hoped for. I was not disappointed though because our two dinners were outstanding! Steven also made up for the fact that he'd forgotten to bring us bread and brought us a slice of delicious homemade chocolate creme pie, which was to die for. Tasty and perfect. I had the quarter rack of ribs double dipped (garlic/bbq) with mashed potato and coleslaw (which my husband ate, I'm allergic). He got the French dip and Mac salad. Finally had a chance to try this place with my wife on a date night and we enjoyed ourselves. The most impressive feat was that the restaurant is completely huge and was pretty much full on a Friday evening and yet they served us quickly and the restaurant never seemed overwhelmed. It ran like a well oiled machine. They are known for their steaks and ribs. I ended up ordering a fish fry, while my wife got the strip steak. The steak is cooked on a woodfired grill and had a nice smokey flavor and was cooked to order (from what I tried). The steak was served with a choice of salad or soup and a side, while I ordered a french onion. The french onion was actually quite good and flavorful with delicious gouda cheese and pieces of bread and a nice, sweet, although slightly too salty broth. My beer battered fish fry was amazing. The crunch of the batter and incredible flaky fish inside. Tartar sauce was great too, but needed more of it for the huge fish it was served. Great value at $12 too. Fries could be substituted too for no charge which was great. Overall, a nice meal and great service. Would definitely recommend! read more

Decided to give Alex,s another chance after having a bad experience last time we had dinner there. Sad to say once a great place for a good meal it has been declining over the years. We had the rids that Alex's is known for and yes they were cooked perfectly but other wise tasteless. We ate at the bar and the only thing the bartender was missing was a wade of gum in her mouth. There was no professionalism about her. We were very disappointed and the tab was much higher than our level of service and quality of food. I've eaten here before and it was always great. However this time, not so much. My appetizer was brought out separate from my dining partner's appetizer who sat there with no food. I got the shrimp skewers, none of the pineapple was on the skewer and the plate was smeared with sauce. It looked messy and rushed. The Caesar salad was on a plate barely bigger than the salad which made it difficult to eat. The dressing was super salty. The green beans literally had zero seasoning or butter. And they were dry. Literally, it was just green beans and nothing else. We ordered something with shrimp and the server said there was no shrimp, so we got up to leave because that was the whole point of the meal and then we were alerted there was shrimp. We wanted a baked potato on the side of our meal, they didn't have baked potatoes. And the waitress seemed as if we were imposing upon her by being there. It was so bad that we left her a tip that was less than 10% of the bill. We never, have ever done that before. Mind you, the place was almost empty so it couldn't be chalked up to her being set up with too many tables. She was not pleasant at all until we were getting ready to leave.
