The last time I went to Alfies the grease/ peanut oil was burnt. They need to change it. Also I was missing a shrimp after paying for an extra one. My kids tenders were burnt flavored too. I have had better here. This doesn't remind me of the fish and chips in England. It's very very greasy here. The grease/peanut oil is expensive so maybe they hold off too long to change it to save money. I felt like I'd wasted my money. I don't know if I'll ever go back. The owner responded that the oil is changed on a strict schedule. Maybe they are over heating the oil. It surely needed to be changed because it was surely not fresh oil. I did not want a remake on an order of fried food cooked in the same burnt grease / oil. We spent over $40 bucks. You should understand why this would be annoying. read more

Found this while enrolled to the place next door. Decided we would go here instead. Glad we did. We split a 2 piece meal with added chicken strips. Love the light crispy batter on the fish. I give it 3 out of 5 because this isn't thee best fish n chips I have ever had. I mean its good, the price is fair and theres decent amount of options but I definitely prefer Louisiana Style fish and chips. Cajun if you will. Here, Im sure its the typical Cod thats used. Kind of wished there were other options of fish on the menu. Catfish, Tilapia, Fillet of Sole, etc. This is more of the English Fish n Chip joint. Anywho, this is the spot i got to here in Lompoc. We decided on Alfie's for dinner tonight...BIG MISTAKE We ordered a 2 piece fish and chips, a fried clam dinner (just clams & fries) and a half pint of clam chowder and a med drink. total was $39.00!!! The order came to us the fries were glazed in grease, they probably were droppped back in the oil to reheat them, totally disgusting! Then we tried the chowder it was over spiced with some spice which was overwhelming (I think it was thyme) and again we could not eat it. One of the "pieces" of fish was almost all batter with apiece of fish the size of my little finger. The clams were excellent , no complaint. At this point I was so annoyed I just wanted to leave but my friend wanted to bring it to the owners attention. When the owner saw and heard our complaint all she said was "Do you want another order of fries?" No thank you.,.the dinner was a total disaster. Got sick while eating there, the grease is hard on the stomach. My niece just moved to lompoc. We came to visit her and we were hungry. Great place! The ambience is spot on and you actually feel like you are in a fish 'n chip place in England. "How do you know?" you might ask? I've spent a few years in jolly ole England and this is one of my favourite foods and I've had really good and really bad fish 'n chips and this place has some really good food. On one trip, I had the classic FnC meal and it didn't disappoint! The next time I went I had the chowder which was awesome too. It leads me to believe the clams and oysters would be good too and i'll try them next time. This is a pretty good fish & chips place...authentic? Nah. Having been here a couple of times over the last year, this is definitely one of my go-to places in Lompoc. The parking is very easy and there is handicapped access via a ramp. The prices are competitive, and the food is above average. Seating is typical, as in booths, complete with very British-y decor, adding a little Olde Worlde ambiance...LOL!. Service is great and the girls behind the counter do a great job. The fish is very good, with a moderate batter, and the quality of the fish is also quite good, with the results being a large fillet, done at the right temperature, with minimal 'greasiness' usually associated with this sort of cuisine. The shrimp are of large size, semi-butterfied, and were excellent...they actually had FLAVOR!! As did the scallops, which though miniscule, had pretty good taste, in spite of their size. Best thing about the place is the fries, and, unfortunately, its also the worst thing. Let me explain. When I get really good fries at a place like this, I want SOME FRIES...so, the fries are great and the quantity is not so much...I got 11 fries. True, they are the steakhouse variety, but still... Another couple of downsides are the hush puppies (just don't need the extra carbs) and the extra 'dusting' of cracklins (batter-bits),,,DEFINITELY don't need those! But those last 2 are actually personal preferences, and I've had hush puppies at a few places across the U.S., and these are not too bad...really. For the fish & chips afficianado, this is a really great find. There are times when a 30 mile drive to Lompoc might be warranted, with Alfies at the end of that drive. read more

Have been going there for decades when I crave old fashioned fish and chips. Always order the 2-3 piece dinner and consistently good. Haven't tried anything else. Coleslaw is good. Think the tartar sauce is homemade and always order extra. I'm not into hush puppies so hold them but those who are would probably enjoy them. I like that they have various vinegars to try. Fries are good. I don't know if this restaurant is family owned but seems like it. Usually someone who appears like a manager-owner is running the restaurant and keeps things inline. As most restaurants of this nature they probably attract better employees as it's always busy, so hopefully new hires understand customer service and good manners results in better tips. One often sees older customers and nice people attending this restaurant-apparently regulars, locals and people like myself that make the drive for good fish and chips. It seems though usually busy they make the effort to take care of customers needs. Thought they had shuttered down due to covid as their old place was vacant. Was very happy to hear they moved into a larger more accommodating building. That's great news as people are less likely to have to wait on a table to sit down and relax while food is being prepared during peak hours. The only other place I'd recommend is Pismo Fish & Chips in Pismo Beach. They do put some spices in the coating of their fish & chips which some may or may not like. Think the vinegars are a better idea so customers can season to their taste. Lived in SBC since 79'. Outside of these two restaurants, this one in Lompoc the other in SLO can't recommend any in SB, SYV or SM for old fashioned fish and chips. read more

Little hole in the wall fried fish place. Fish was really good. Fried well, not greasy. They must water down their vinegar, all of them tasted off. Their tarter made up for the lack of vinegar. This is hands down the best fish n chips place on the Central Coast. You can't see it, but my hands are actually down! Literally! The fish is crispy and moist. Do yourself a favor and put some Malt Vinegar on it then tartar sauce. Mouthgasm! The chips, or, as I like to call them, 'fries', are delicious as well. And the little bits of crispies included with the fish n chips? Deeeevine. Hush Puppies are great too. And they'll deep fry a Twinkie, they're THAT crazy! My boyfriend Derek, my dad, and I went here for the first time today ... and I've lived in Lompoc for over a decade! Alfie's just really doesn't have much of a following in this town, so reputation wasn't preceding it, but I thought we'd give it a chance. I have also lived in London for a few months, so nostalgia brought me to it. On both counts, it disappointed me. I think this is more my problem than Alfie's, since I don't eat fish, and I don't particularly like/eat meat either ... I ended up trying the chicken strips meal, and it was all right. I liked the hush puppies but thought they could go with something other than ranch. The chips were bland. My dad and Derek both had the fish sandwich; Derek was impressed especially because he likes tartar sauce and my dad found the meal unremarkable. It was also a little too pricey for the food/atmosphere that you get. I don't think I'll ever come back here. One last thing -- they use all plastic/styrofoam/paper products except for their baskets. I am so angry at this place. We spent almost $30 for a baked fish plate and a 3-piece fish plate with clam chowder, all of it coming out absolutely tasteless and exactly like it was from boxes and cans from the supermarket. We are two people who love British things and were excited to go inside this restaurant. My baked fish was soggy inside two pieces of foil, the fish sprinkled heavily with black pepper like this would give it taste, the foil on top of rice pilaf tasting exactly like something from the box on the grocery sale shelf. In contrast, the greasy fried fish tasted completely unsalted and tasteless in its own way. I guess it's to be dipped into the jarred tartar sauce to give it something resembling flavor. I have been coming here since it opened in 1969 and it has always been good, but tonight it was horrid! Recently I have found it hit and miss. The fish and the fries were very greasy and tasted like the fish was bad. Threw it all away, what a waste. Very disappointing. Hands down my favorite place to eat in town. I come here about three or four times a month. Yeah, it's pretty expensive since the store pays a lot to import quality ingredients, but it's so damn worth it just for those exquisite fish and chips. Chicken strips and clam chowder are both delicious as well. Incredibly friendly staff, especially the owner Mike who always serves with a smile.
