A must-stop if you ever find yourself in Lompoc. I visit family in the town every few months and I make sure to grab some fish and chips while I'm there. My experience here has been consistently excellent. My expectations for Alfie's were rather low as Lompoc isn't the culinary capital of California but I was so happy to have found this gem in one of my stays here. The biggest thing for me is that the fish is not overdone and the chips aren't greasy. This location hits that al dente mark for the fish and while it might not be pretty to look at, it more than makes up for it with its food. EDIT: They moved locations since I visited them in 2018! What can I say? Alfie's is famous & now I know why! The food is fantastic! I always get the 1/2 fish & 1/2 shrimp. It's my favorite because I get 2 different flavor profiles. The fries are great too & if you don't have room for the amazing hush puppies, take them home and eat them later. They're sweet so they make a great snack later on. I normally love Alfie's but was very disappointed on my most recent visit. I ordered the jumbo shrimp as well as a 1/4 lb of veggies. The shrimp were much smaller than usual, approx 1/2 the size. No way was there a 1/4 lb of veggies in that basket either. Food was still delicious, but disappointing for the price. read more

I came here on a Saturday morning to pick up a to go order at around 11:30AM. It was pretty quiet and calm in the joint, but I loved the old school vibes. It was my first time here. The woman who helped me out behind the register was so sweet and nice. I had ordered a three piece fish and chips with extra tartar on the side. I paid with debit and noticed the sign that said they checked ID for all debit and credit cards, which she did. When I came home and opened my bag, I noticed she had given me four pieces of fish instead of my ordered three. The fish was very crispy, but I noticed that ten minutes after it was packaged parts of the fish started to get soggy a bit. It's definitely an eat-it-now kind of thing. The tartar sauce was pretty good. I added lemon juice for more of a tang, but the catfish, itself, was pretty bland. If it didn't have the sauce, it wouldn't have tasted like anything. The chips were steak cut and like your typical steak cut fries. All in all, the four stars are for the nice vibes of the place (which is hard to find), the sweet woman working there, and volume of food. read more

Driving around Lompoc on a Thursday, decide to drop by. We are glad we did! Fish was fresh, chips were crispy: all made to order. Got some hush puppies and coleslaw as well. Service was relatively fast, staff was polite and helpful. Booths are big enough for four people to sit comfortably, bathroom is clean and restaurant has its own parking lot. Greasy tastless battered and fried somethings...everything tasted the same and my tongue was coated with an old slick of grease that made an impregnable film that took several days to finally wash away even after repeated tongue brushings. Bland bland bland....did I say bland? I feel sorry for British peope if this is their "Signature" dish. Take it back, with Boris Johnson as PM, I don't feel bad....seems like that's his daily meal. The fish and chips are fried in 100% peanut oil at just the right temperature. I didn't leave feeling weighed down from eating all the fried food like one normally would. The fish was well cooked, flakey and fresh tasting. We also had the fried mixed veggies and they were delicious! The hush puppies that come with the fish and chips had a great flavor and were not greasy at all! I find this to be true at other restaurants so I was pleasantly surprised. Condiments were plentiful- a great dilly tasting tartar sauce and malt vinegar. They also had some other British favs like HP sauce- did not try this time. Another claim to fame with this place is their seasonal pumpkin hush puppies we decided to give a try. Served with a small cup of cream cheese frosting, they had a wonderful spice cake and pumpkin flavor- the frosting was the perfect combination of tart and sweet. Been patronizing this place for 35 years. It has change owners about 12 years ago. They have been fairly consistent over the years but it seems they change something in the past year. The fish is different shape and not quite the same. Don't know if it's different species or what it is. Ok I was pleasantly surprised by what we found in the middle of Lompoc?? Staff was good, decor was semi authentic and the food was pretty good. My beef with this place is that prices were a little high for Lompoc. The other thing I notice about all restaurants is cleanliness and the attention to details. You're going to notice the ceiling vents either need to be cleaned or replaced. That was nasty! And the table where the condiments sit should be stainless steel not wood. Nasty floors in the corners. Made me start looking for bugs. Kinda made it not he best experience but this is Lompoc! And why are you charging 5bucks for a beer?! You're in Lompoc. Keep it real close the restaurant. Girl at the counter was very nice and explained the menu to us. Everybody we saw there were wearing masks and there were several hand sanitizers that we could use. Now, to the horrible part -- their food. I've gotta be honest, this is the worst food I've had in California. Unseasoned (not even salt!!), tasteless, and awfully greasy. They give you tartar sauce, malt vinegar packets if you ask. The hush puppies--which are a Southern and not British food anyway, were pretty bleh. Basically plain old deep fried cornbread balls, no corn kernels, no spice, no nothing. The cole slaw was actually fresh, kinda plain though, no tang or flavor at all. Every time I'm in Lompoc I always make it a point to stop by this establishment. They always have an excellent menu selection and I have yet to be disappointed. Being a native of the neighboring city Santa Maria, in my opinion it has a similar taste to the Jays Fish & Chips that was once in Santa Maria. This restaurant is always clean, the owners + their employees always have a great attitude, very friendly, and knowledgeable. They even call me by my name which goes a long way with me. What an interesting find in a small town between nowhere and Vandenberg Air Force Base. It's a quaint, easy-going joint which boasts authentic English fish n' chips. Aside from the malt vinegar, thick cut fried potatoes and mock newspaper bag everything is wrapped in, I'm not sure what authentic English is supposed to mean. It looked and felt like some fish n' chips I've had in London. That I get. But, as far as flavor goes, it was well-below ok. The texture of the fish and potatoes were good, but it wasn't well seasoned and severely lacked in flavor. Even the condiments - cole slaw and tatar sauce - were bland. While hushpuppies I think are really more American South than English I was really looking forward to them as part of the sides that came with combo meal. Unfortunately, they were just as plain and bland as everything else on the plate. Stocked with a few shelves of English products like custard in box and yeast extract, it was fun purchasing some imported English food items as souvenirs. The place has a nice vibe and cool staff. It's nice enough that if I didn't write this review, I'd probably forget I was disappointed in the meal and come back again for it's kitschy-ness and friendly ambience. The last time I went to Alfies the grease/ peanut oil was burnt. They need to change it. Also I was missing a shrimp after paying for an extra one. My kids tenders were burnt flavored too. I have had better here. This doesn't remind me of the fish and chips in England. It's very very greasy here. The grease/peanut oil is expensive so maybe they hold off too long to change it to save money. I felt like I'd wasted my money. I don't know if I'll ever go back. The owner responded that the oil is changed on a strict schedule. Maybe they are over heating the oil. It surely needed to be changed because it was surely not fresh oil. I did not want a remake on an order of fried food cooked in the same burnt grease / oil. We spent over $40 bucks. You should understand why this would be annoying. read more
