I think this is our third time here. The food is alright for what it is, and I've never felt blown away by anything I've ordered. It seems like many people love it here since it's always crowded on the weekends. The nashville hot chicken sandwich and nashville hot chicken bao buns are delicious. The chicken is crispy and the flavors are good. The bao buns were so soft and the texture was great. All the flavors from the chicken, slaw, and pickle worked so well together. We've also had their brownie for dessert a previous time and it was delicious. Idk if I remember their mac and cheese being this dry from the previous times because if I remembered it that way, I probably would not have ordered it this time. It basically just tasted like plain noodles. There was like a tsp of thin cheese sauce at the bottom of the plate. I had a really good experience at Maize & Mash. The food absolutely lived up to the hype! phenomenal, hearty, and very filling. No complaints at all on that front. The atmosphere leans more toward a cocktail bar or speakeasy vibe. It's darker, loud, and energetic, which gives it more of a bar feel than a traditional sit-down restaurant. That said, the food quality is outstanding for that type of environment. Their cocktail menu also looked incredible, with what seemed like endless options no matter your preference. The only downside was the wait. I had a 7:00 reservation, but our table wasn't ready and we ended up waiting about 10 minutes. During that time, several DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers came in and out picking up orders, which just reinforced how popular the place is. If you want an intimate date night spot for quiet conversation, I wouldn't recommend. It's definitely more of a bar scene, but upscale. The food is very hearty and comforting. The potions will make you extremely full. The food isn't typical bar food. It's definitely a mix of upscale food with a louder bar environment. Would definitely go for the food again, but would probably only grab a drink in the restaurant. When we got there it was a bit chaotic with no sign to wait to be seated or seat yourself. The hostesses were running around and finally 10 minutes after our reservation time were we seated. We started out with bourbon drinks. I had the special this month called These Aren't Pillows, which a percentage went to Toys for Tots. Hubby had an old fashioned and also the Nashville hot chicken sandwich topped with an egg with truffle fries for lunch. This was my second time dining at Maize+Mash, and overall it was a good experience. We were seated right away, which is always a great sign. Our table was by the window, giving the space a festive feel, though it was a bit drafty. Thankfully, heaters were placed nearby, which made it much more comfortable. Our waitress was pleasant and efficient, and the service throughout the evening was solid. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits, which were delicious but not quite as good as versions I've had at other local spots. I also tried the Adobo Fried Rice, which was just okay--the chicken was a bit too charred. While the ambiance, drinks, and service were excellent, the food was slightly underwhelming this time. It may have been due to the busy holiday night, as I remember having a better experience here on a previous visit. This spot could not be more my speed! I visited on a Wednesday afternoon with a party of 6. The inside is dark and moody with a metal ceiling, dark paints, rustic wood tables, and industrial lighting. The menu offers a mix of elevated bar food and bbq favorites. Their drink menu is bourbon strong but offers variety for the vodka, gin, etc drinkers. Our group had two rounds of drinks to try quite a few which was nice. My favorites were the Missing Summer (smokey, bright, spice finish), Season With Your Heart (fruity, sweet, not too gin-like), and the Old Fashioned. For bites, we also shared quite a bit. I loved the Arancini (slight heat finish, savory, soft), Cauliflower Tots (sauce is separate on the plate), Cheese Curds (surprisingly loved the sauce with this), and do NOT skip out on the Truffle Fry Side! The pricing was a bit of a premium and they do not offer a happy hour nor weekday deals. I definitely recommend sharing to try a little of a lot. The decor is whimsical (see if you can spot the painting of actor Alan Rickman as an army general when you walk in). The space is nice and spacious but still managed to feel cozy. We started with cocktails and I got the February cocktail which had conversations hearts in it. Despite how it sounds it wasn't overly sweet and was a fun drink. For our starter we got the poutine which was so delicious. The portions are very generous here so I got a cup of the gumbo with truffle fries and that was plenty for me. My companions burger, fish and chips and grilled cheese all looked great too. Would definitely recommend and would be happy to return. read more

Unbelievable! We wandered in for lunch and were delighted to find this cute bistro. The staff was welcoming and the place was hopping! I cannot put into words how wonderful the food was! I ordered the shrimp and grits. It intrigued me as they were served with pickled peppers and a brown butter sauce. My mouth is watering even thinking about it! My friend had a sandwich and fries. For the better part of 3 years, the only significant place I associated with Glen Ellyn was Common Good Cocktail House (amazing for drinks if you've never been!). Typically after drinks, my wife and I would look up restaurants in the area, and while Maize + Mash always pops up on that list, we've somehow managed to always choose something different, at least up until our most recent visit. Shareables: Short Rib Poutine (Chef's Pick) Mussels Entrees: Salmon Salad Mushroom + Truffle Pasta (not pictured) Louisiana Seafood Gumbo (Chef's Pick) I like how Maize + Mash has a curated menu without an overwhelming amount of options and has one selected "Chef's Pick" for each section (appetizer, salad, burger/sandwiches, and entrees). We ended up picking two of these Chef's choice options as indicated above. To sum it up, almost everything was fantastic. The short rib poutine was as expected. The mussels were really large and satisfying. I didn't have the salmon salad but the two guests that did said it was delicious and properly cooked. The mushroom + truffle pasta was exactly what I would want in a well made pasta dish. My only gripe was unfortunately with the seafood gumbo. Both my friend and I each ordered our own seafood gumbo entree and ended up sharing the same sentiment in that it was just too salty. Bear in mind though that gumbos are not my favorite thing. I knew going into it, it would be a risk and that over saltiness is a common complaint I have with this type of dish. However, the "Chef's Pick" selection put me over the fence and I tried it anyways. Unfortunately, it didn't change my mind about gumbos. But because everything else was so good, I would gladly come back. Also a quick shout-out to the service - one of the food runners brought out the wrong salad to our table without us realizing it. Don't know if they were short staffed on Presidents Day, but we sat for a while before anyone even brought us water. NO ONE said hello or even "your server will be right with you." One young woman server kept walking back and forth and not even eye contact. Was she our server, who knows? Two different experiences and both were excellent! Servers are incredibly kind and attentive. Overall, the food was good! The side salad was fresh, and I appreciate they make their own dressings and condiments. I ordered a side salad and added an a la carte veggie patty (I'm limited to vegan options) instead of ordering a burger with the bun, feta, and slaw. The homemade veggie burger patty was very yummy, a little mushy. The cilantro lime dressing was scrumptious. The side salad itself was $6, so very affordable. They did add the veggie patty as a $9 upcharge (!!!) and rang it up as the same as adding chicken a la carte, which was a little surprising and made it the same price as ordering the burger itself, which came with all the toppings and bun, plus a side. We weren't too thrilled about that and were taken off guard a little. The service was just ok. It's also very loud and cramped inside. We were there on a Friday night, so understandable, but it didn't make for the most pleasant dining experience with people standing right next to your table. We finally got to try Maize & Mash a few weekends ago and it was delicious...from the drinks to the food. I stuck with cocktails that night and loved the Lady in the Purple Dress. I also tried their blueberry special of the month and while good - Lady was better. I could easily go thru all their cocktail list! For food - we started with the Nashville Chicken Baos and they were good. I liked the uniqueness of the baos and the flavoring was perfect. For entrees, we got the gumbo and lomo saltado. Both were delicious. I loved my skirt steak and the fries stayed nice and crispy in the dish - w/o becoming soggy from the sauces - which is not an easy task. As for ambience - I am extremely grateful to have been able to sit outside on the front patio. The inside - even at 5 pm is very loud. You can't even have a good conversation w/o yelling. They have a huge selection of drinks and a couple of mocktails. And they are all good. We have tried old-fashioned, mascal cocktails and a couple of other mocktails. The cauliflower tots appt is good but the main course version of it is not good. I love their veggie burger. Unlike most places, they make in-house patty, which is moist and tasty. Typically when I go to this brand I am at Burger Local in Geneva, so it was fun to try another establishment. I started with the cocktail of the month- I like trying new things and that they donate some of the proceeds each month. The ambiance is nice in the restaurant- kind of a high end sports bar feel. Our server was attentive and had helpful suggestions which was nice. We got the short rib poutine starter which was delicious and stick to your ribs comfort food. From there we each got a burger- I got the local and my husband got the Maize and Mash- both were messy and delicious and cooked how we wanted. Not only was he incredibly kind and helpful through the situation, he went the extra mile to ensure that my most recent experience with the restaurant didn't end on a bad note. Thank you, James! Your amazing customer service means everything. My waiter spilled someone else's red wine on my white sweater and didn't offer any reconciliation for it. He asked if I wanted him to try to dab it out with the same napkin that he used to clean the rest of the wine with. There was no resolution, barely any apology. Although, I never expect any compensation, it would've been nice. I've worked in the service industry, and the courteous thing to do was at least comp something. I was given the full bill as if nothing happened, not even an additional apology. It was just me with my (hopefully) salvageable sweater stained with red wine. In hindsight, I wish I had gotten a manager involved but it was a busy Saturday night and I truly didn't want to be there another minute. I wanted to give the waiter the opportunity to make it right knowing that it was an accident. Found this cute little spot after visiting the arboretum. I was starving so I chowed! Craft cocktails were great, I enjoyed the Sacred Sage and hubby had the One is Company, Two is a Pear. Husband ordered fish & chips; I got the short rib grilled cheese and a side of mashed potatoes w gravy which was barely warm. I never send anything back, but I thought it's my birthday and asking for hot mashed potatoes isn't very demanding. They were in a little crock so I figured they could just throw it in the oven. Server brought back a fresh serving. Again, barely warm. They were awful. Wasn't going to send them back again esp since she never followed up to ask if they were okay. And while she was very efficient and checked in often, she had NO personality. Very serious and straightforward. Not asking to strike up conversation, but it kinda came off as snooty.
