He takes special care and attention to help you learn not only the proper form of a move but also the why behind it. Once you have it, it's impossible to forget. I've tried other gyms, including 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, Gold's Gym, and Planet Fitness. Some were okay, but I keep coming back to UFC Gym because it's close to home and is open late on certain days, which works well with my schedule. Since I usually come later at night, I've never really had an issue with waiting for equipment. The cleanliness is decent overall, although I do wish members would be more considerate about cleaning up after themselves. It's frustrating seeing people throw or leave paper towels behind after wiping down equipment instead of putting them in the trash. The staff have always been friendly and helpful whenever I've needed anything. Overall, I've had a pretty good experience here over the years, and the convenience, late hours, and location are the main reasons I continue to come back.

I will admit, over the last few months, my son was not able to go to classes consistently bc of life changes happening in our family. But we tried to take him as often as we could. On the other hand, I want to warn you about the front-desk chick. She is curt, often cut me off, repeated herself to me rudely during conversion, and attempted to talk down to me a couple of times. My last conversation with her eliminated any possibility of me ever returning or even properly recommending this place. If you are thinking of joining, be prepared to sign a 1-year contract in which there really is no out, unless you're willing to fork out an additional $199. God forbid that you should have any life changes where you move away, lose your job, get another job, or endure life's struggles during a pandemic. Our one-year contract is coming to an end, and I went in to speak to the front-desk chick about it. I was thinking of either simply not renewing the next year's contract altogether, or I had thought of asking if there was an option where we could continue to attend fewer times a month or even join a different payment plan. Her attitude and demeanor towards me made me completely rethink any option of wanting to stay. We only have one month left (which I didn't realize we'd have to pay beyond our contract end date), and I asked her, so is there any way that you all work with someone who needs to end their contract early bc they moved or something, and her response was well, we have people that come all the way from Redlands. I thought, okayyy, good for them. Even though my son has barely attended the past few months, I never considered asking if we could get out of the contract during that time. I simply made the 1-and-a half hour trip once or twice when I could, and decided to pay to finish out until the end-date on the contract. However, this type of service goes to show that they don't value you as a customer, and they just want that one-year contract from you. I was also telling her how she could see that my son had barely attended the last few months bc of moving and was going to explain more, but she cut me off and said yeah and we provide the service that you pay for. She also condescendingly told me, that's why there's a contract. I simply laughed a little because it was so awkward, and I then told her, you know, you make it difficult to talk to you. She then shook her head and said, I tell everyone the same thing, and I said but yes, it's hard to talk to you about anything. I had also interacted with her months before when my son came out of a class and was frustrated to the point of tears. So after I asked him what happened, and he told me, I said I wanted to get peace of mind before the next class because he was so nervous and upset about it. I called, and the front-desk chick answered. I told her my concerns after I had asked to talk to the coach and she said he was in a class. I told her that I was just calling, as a mom, to find out what happened and to let the coach know about my sons nervousness. It's been awhile so I don't remember all of the conversation, but I remember feeling so frustrated afterwards. I remember being brushed off, like my concerns were nothing. That was the only time I had called about my son and I even told her that I wasn't complaining, I really was just concerned. I remember her being very defensive with me and just telling me something to the effect of, that's how these classes are and all the coaches know what they're doing. So be warned, if you want to join, the coach is nice enough, but the customer service at the front desk is awful.

But they were able to be patient with me, to explain things repeatedly--I'm very visual and super literary but much less intuitive when it comes to athletics--and this helped me learn the basics of the art of Muay Thai. And then my last trainer got too busy to keep going. So I tried a bunch of Muay Thai gyms, never really finding anything that matched the return I got from 1-on-1 training. Then one day I spotted NELA Combat Fitness on a Figueroa corner and got intrigued. I tried a class and loved the energy of the space. Highland Park is a wildly creative area, and the experience at NELA Combat Fitness mirrors this: The people are diverse, upbeat, inclusive and very dedicated to the art of Muay Thai. You might find a 50+ year old like me training with someone in their early 20s, and this dynamic is always approached respectfully. Ed, the owner, is a true gem of a human being: warm, funny, and with deep history with and knowledge of Muay Thai, and he teaches with a razor sharp eye and the communication skills to help keep things safe and to level up your game. The gym itself is spotless, well-designed and comfortable. One way that the absolute courtesy with which the gym operates shows up is when we go return Thai pads or kick shields: cleaning wipes are shared and pads are stacked in an orderly way. Every teacher approaches class a little differently, but if you show up, know that you are in for a wonderful workout that is easily tailored to your skill level. The music is always different and always good. You will be inspired to push yourself beyond your limits, outside of your comfort zone. You will grow, you will sweat, and you will learn. And you will emerge a stronger person. And about Muay Thai overall? It's the best. I feel elevated and calm afterwards, able to take on anything life throws my way with compassion. That's the irony - punching, kicking, elbowing and kneeing it out for an hour actually makes you a calmer, kinder person. Your baseline is reset and your cardio and strength gets better and better.
