Umm Ali Baba should be labeled Ali Bye Bye I was craving a Falafel sandwich today but wasn't in the mood to drive from my home in Grant Park all the way up to Roswell/Sandy Springs to go to Aladdin's BIG MISTAKE BABY! Dude that prepared my food was uber friendly and even gave me a sample of their grape leaf wraps. He's the reason for the 2 stars :) Here we go....where on earth are falafels served ICED COLD? My falafel balls were pre-cooked and chilling behind a glass deli display case waiting for me to order em, say what now...YES THEY WERE pre-cooked! The bootleg pita tortilla like wrap was heated on a panini press and my ICE COLD falafel was then assembled. I ran to my car dying of starvation and took one bite and all I could think of was what a disgrace. I almost wanted to cry.... I was literally salivating at the mouth for hot steamy deep fried crunchy falafel balls. You Yelpers be tripping with y'all fake 4-5 star review. Be HONEST people! I've stopped in here a few times over the past years & have been pretty satisfied with the food & service. It's a little hard to get to because of the parking hastle, but easy on foot if you're already around L5P. The dining area is small inside & outside (a few stools & tables) but you kick back a little more in the hookah lounge area. I had the Black Bean hummus with Pita and it was freaking good! I've been to this location and the downtown location many many times. It never disappoints. I always get the gyro wrap. It's a little bit on the greasy side - but you know that means it's packed with delicious lamb flavor. The hummus is divine, I've gotten that to take home quite a few times. Honestly, I didn't have very many expectations about what I would see at Ali Baba, but it was pleasant enough experience. I can't say this was the cleanest place, but the food, albeit messy, was tasty. We really went there to kill some time and avoid the more egregious traffic from the 'burbs to meeting a friend for dinner, so this was a great stopping place. Went here for the first time during the Little Five Points Halloween parade on Saturday, and it was really good. The guy serving the gyro itself was a little gruff and intimidating, but he put together a bangin' gyro. Oh, and say it with me: Yee-row. It is NOT a Jy-row. Anyway, the only thing I found odd about the gyro was the red sauce, but given all of my expertise regarding Mediterranean food (read: none), that could actually be authentic. My instincts say no, though. It was definitely tasty, just different from what I'm used to. The tabouli salad was great, even though it didn't have any cous cous. Just cukes, maters, parsley, feta (YAY!) and a vinaigrette. Then the very friendly cashier directed us to the "patio" (surrounded by plastic because of the unseasonably cold, windy day) so we could catch glimpses of the freak show outside whilst sitting down to eat our grub like civilized beings. It cost around $9 for the gyro, side, and drink, so it's a LITTLE pricier than I would normally go for at lunchtime, but it's definitely good. Im a very laid back person and this is a super chill place. I love that you can smoke shisha in a Turkish lounge and eat a good gryo without someone in your face. This is a definately a mom and pop spot; I have only seen two people working here. No table service or swanky seating, just some benches covered in tapestry blankets. The food is great. Good staple Mediterranian, hummus, tabouli, lamb beef , falafel. Cheaper version of Cafe Agora, but better and more plentiful in my opinion. The food is more in the background (when you dine-in.) Abraham has given us the best customer service and hospitality we have ever received anywhere! We live near Ponce city market and we started going to Ali Baba's about a year ago. After trying the amazing food and meeting Abraham we couldn't stop coming back! He really makes it feel like a community restaurant and leaves us coming back for more. Even though we always come ordering lots of food for me, my fiancé and my son.. he always catered to our needs and what we asked for with our meals even when we asked for very specific meal plates and side items. Seein as I am always looking for the falafel to replace the much missed Oasis on Ponce. I jumped at the chance to try a new place close to work. I can tell you every joint in town that serves up those little fried balls of chickpea goodness. Some for better, some for worse. Luckily this little shop o' pitas is spot on. Small space, but big ol portions of damn fine grub. The falafel is scrumptious and too big. I'd lose about half the lettuce filler. But the grape leaves, hummus, pasta salad, spinach pie and baba ganoush are the best I've had since the oasis was demolished to make way for the monstrosity of a shopping center that sits in its place. It makes me glad to see the space utilized for something nice. The patio is great place to enjoy your grub away from the sidewalks of L5P. The combos average around 8$ and I'd bet you won't leave unsatisfied. My workmates said the Gyros were better than Nick's. I'd have to take their word on that one. read more

The atmosphere at Ali Baba's is really chill, the adjoining hookah room is a nice space to go to and clear your mind (at least on a Monday-that's when I visited). The falafel wrap was very tasty and flavorful. The consistencies of the various items within the wrap (hummus, falafel, veggies) meshed very well. I tried their baklava dessert-oops sugar rush (did not see that one coming) ! They offer Hookah but I did not try it. I had a nice convo with one of the guys who works there, he was very welcomng. I just moved from the bay area (CA) to Atlanta not too long ago and I am sadly realizing that only about 20% of Atlanta restaurants actually have edible food. In light of all the reviews for Ali Baba, I decided to try their gyros. I thought, "OH! Run by Turks! Must be authentic!" To my dismay, what I got was a sad resemblance of a gyro. The meat was NOT freshly shaved off a rotating pole (you would think an "AUTHENTIC Turkish/Greek restaurant would have one of those things), and it had absolutely no flavor... I asked for extra feta and zazki and did NOT get either... I got some kind of shredded cheese that looked and tasted more like crumbled jack or mozzarella and a weird tasteless yogurt sauce that was NOTHING like zaziki. Furthermore, the pita bread that they wrapped my crap-lump-of-nothing-with-cream up in was not even grilled or baked or anything.. they could have tried grilling it a bit for 30 seconds to give it some texture... and if i was lucky, they could burn the pita to give the gyro some flavor... but if they didnt even grill their meat, they were definitely not going to grill their crap pita bread.... my crap-gyro was soggy by the time I got back to my desk to eat it... and i couldnt even finish it because each bite brought me closer to disappointment over the wrap of crap that bought for $9 that tasted like nothing. I would have been happier eating the foil. Surprisingly enough, I had a really good gyro at The Flat Iron in East Atlanta. And their onion rings are awesome.... go there and spend just about the same amount of money (less than $10) for something you can ACTUALLY ENJOY. What a shame.... read more

I love some good old fashioned hang over food as much as the next person, but this literally made me ill. The food was just awful, including the 10 inch long piece of hair in the middle of my gyro. I discovered that after eating bland hummus, stale pita, bargain-bin reject vegetables, and what tasted like boiled greasy meat. I visited this place with my homegirl after a lazy Sunday of shopping in Lil 5 Points . I thought it was pretty cool place. I ordered the tilapia. It was wrapped in a pita, they put waaay too much of the cucumber sauce on it. I spooned it off and ate it up. I like the sitting room in the back it was very chill and you can toke the hookah if that's your thing. The guys that worked there were cute and very nice. They gave us a free test out of the falafel with a bit of hummus which I had never had before it was really good. I wish I could have gotten some wine but I think I could have gotten some at Java Lords. Its not the BEST I've ever had but it was tasty. read more

Ate here last night while waiting through two dreadful opening bands at the Variety Playhouse -- perfect because you could hear the music from the patio. Yummy falafel and a really friendly Turkish staff. The menu is a little vague... if you want a "combo," you get the wrap (falafel, gyro, etc.) and just kind of pick other stuff from behind the counter to go with it. I don't want to say "bland," but I will note that food here is pretty gently seasoned -- not nearly as garlicky as a lot of other Mediterranean places. I didn't try the "spicy sauce," but I'm sure that would goose the flavor. Good baba ghanoush and baklava. Soft drinks only. Turkish TV and trinkets -- I got some cool Evil Eye earrings. My fiancé and I ordered lunch to go, we had two gyros. They were dripping grease, I had never eaten a gyro that dripped grease. We attempted to place our order over the phone, but was advised not to because our pita bread might become soggy. That should've been the warning sign. I have been here once - wife saw it while we were shopping and she was hungry. I looked over the menu and did not see bacon anywhere, so I jokingly said that to the guy that took my order - he was not amused. My wife (who has a very worldly look to her) took over and ordered her food, leaving me to fend for myself. I just found out about the hot sauce by reading another review, so I will get that next time. I had the chicken doner, my wife had the veggie wrap - we were both impressed when we saw the size of the wraps. The seating area was actually very cool because I could see my wife's beautiful legs better. My wrap was better than expected - I generally avoid wraps because they put more 'other stuff' than the meat my body craves. This wrap was very meaty. There were a few other people there, everyone was very friendly and the place was clean. It was clear that the place had its regulars and it was busy the whole time we were there - even at 3pm on a Saturday. It appeared you could customize your wrap somewhat - I learned this after watching a few of the regulars make some variations on the same food I ordered. I was very full when I left - something, again, I did not expect. Some of the best falafel in town, Ali Baba's is a great stop for lunch or a quick bite prior to going to see a show at either Seven Stages or the Variety Playhouse. It's small on the inside with an equally small patio (that is lovely to sit on in the spring or fall). You can also order a hookah to smoke out on the patio. Non-smoker's should stick to take out, as the patio is open to both the smoker and non-smoker. You get a ton of bang for your buck at Ali-Baba's . . . large portions will keep you stuffed for a majority of the day. And I tell you - it's nice to be full without feeling heavy. Be aware that the tables are about as tall as the stools - save your knees and turn to the side. Some people have said that the people who work there are gruff . . . that has NEVER been my experience. They aren't falling over themselves to kiss your ass and personally, I don't want to go out and have that as my service in a mom and pop place like this. read more

Ask the server to add some hot sauce for a kick if you like it like that. The fresh parsley mixture with the falafel is the perfect pita combination. 3 days ago I wrote a review on the gyros I get from Nicks, I stated they were "the best i ever had". Well, slap my butt and call me Mary, cause I am in love with the gyros here. it was juicy and well seasoned, I love the cucumber sauce they put on the gyros here. It tastes so homemade and full of texture. I wish my meat was a little bit more crispy on the edges (like at Nicks) and my wonderful sauce, that I just raved about, was only at the top of my wrap. I wish they would put that on the pita itself and then layer everything on top. I want to taste the sauce in every savory bite. Next time, I'll ask them to make it like that, or I'll get extra on the side. it was a great amount of meat, the tomatoes were sliced big and were very juicy. the person I was with got a falafel, he loved it. But he did have the same problem with his sauce. I have no complaints...well other than what I already mentioned. I will definitely eat here again and again. read more
