Short update - knocking down a star based on today's experience - it was lack luster. I complained that my food wasn't warm and she took it away, I literally heard the microwave fire up, the plates switch for both parts of my meal, and it was returned. Less liquidy and now warmer in some spots, lava hot in others (like microwaves do without stirring). My dad's sandwich was lacking flavor. I'll give the place another try, but thankfully I've been there a dozen times or so and realize this poor performance is a one-off situation (HOPEFULLY). No management came to apologize for the crummy meal. Below is my prior, more raving review. This is an old family diner at it's finest. I've been here a few times now because it is close to my work. They have a vast salad menu, next time I am going to get a berry salad because it sounds good and the homemade poppy dressing is tasty. I had a falafel salad which came with hummus, tahini, fattoush, and tabouli - that was all pretty good. My dad got a chicken pot pie which came with a salad, gravy, and a bread basket for $7. He said it was tasty. My mom has had the omelette which she liked. I've had mjadra - it is all good people. The restaurant is at the end of a strip mall and I don't know when they last updated the look. But the dressing is yummy and homemade (and now sold in Meijers). I don't know what every other review was talking about but my experience was absolutely terrible. The food was not hot and had meatballs that were cold. I called to address the issue and was told I should have call another place. Very over priced and lousy read more

Inexpensive home cooked Mediterranean esque eats for all diets. Portions are large, I can easily make a meal or 3 more when I eat here. Lots of veggie and vegan options, meat eaters too. I really like the falafel and mujadra. Service is courteous and quick. read more

Until recently this place only had a Yelp entry as "Alia's Catering" (which is hosted out of the same building). All the reviews on that page (including mine) were for the restaurant not the catering service. I tried editing that entry to include the restaurant info but Yelp rejected the changes. Recently I noticed that all the pictures I had taken of my restaurant food had been deleted. Then I noticed this new Alia's Family Dining entry and took it as a sign that I we should be reviewing the restaurant here and keep the catering service entirely separate. So below is my old review from the catering page, copy/pasted here where it apparently makes more sense. ------------------------------------------- (Disclaimer: Have never ordered catering from Alia's, this review is for the sit-down restaurant) I have been coming to Alia's for upwards of 25 years now. It was a favorite diner of my family's during my middle school years. During high school if I cut class for a "long lunch" you could as often as not find me at Alia's. I moved from the area for a number of years but have recently moved back, once again a regular at Alia's. And I can say that the place really hasn't changed. In a good way. The menu is nearly unchanged, food tastes the same, the decor is still stuck in the 80's, some of the old waitstaff are still around, increase in price has been marginal. Probably my only complaint regarding change (or lack there-of) is that there is at least one item still listed on the menu that they no longer offer. The Artichoke Pie was always one of my favorites--like a perfect spinach pie made instead with artichokes--and it is still listed on the menu. However if you order it they will tell you that they now only make it for catering orders. So I have to wonder how many other items listed on the menu are not available to order when you sit down at a table and eat. Where Alia's really shines is in their breakfast and also in their Mediterranean food. They have a full range of tasty kibbehs, schwarmas, gyros, baba ganoush, spinach pies, stuffed grape leaves, baklava and the like. The hidden menu gem is their falafel. This was one of the first places to ever really expose me to falafel and I still rank theirs amongst some of the best I have had in the area. It is flavorful without being overseasoned, crispy on the outside, and nicely textured in the middle. The "Super Falafel" wrap, made with hummus and tabbouleh, has always been a favorite of mine and tastes the same today as it did 25 years ago. They also do a delicious falafel & hummus omelet which tastes way better than it sounds, totally worth the risk. Which brings me to the next thing Alia's does particularly well... their breakfast. Served all day, the breakfast is always cooked perfectly to order. For the most part it's just standard diner breakfast fare done well (they are not re-inventing the wheel). However you will find a few tasty specialty items you typically will not see elsewhere, such as the afore-mentioned falafel omelet, or bagels & lox. Alia's also has a full range of standard diner comfort foods, such as club sandwiches, meat loaf, hot turkey sandwiches (made with real turkey), chicken fingers, and burgers. Their burgers are just ok but I am particularly fond of the greek burger (the one made with olives and feta). They also have a range of pretty good salads, with excellent dressings, and I believe make their own dressings in-house. You can buy bottles of it at the counter (I believe the brand is called Appolonia). I hope the Alia's restaurant stays open and just the way it is for years to come. My two-year-old daughter loves the place currently and it would be awesome for her to be experiencing nostalgia similar to mine, but many years from now. read more

I love this place! You'll never know it's here unless you look for it. It's located in the corner of the strip mall. My family and I come here every other weekend for breakfast. Great staff. Cheap prices and GOOD FOOD! I love that the portions aren't too big. You're really paying for the amount of food they give you - which is nice because we're full when we leave and we don't feel bad having to waste food or take it home (cause it wouldn't get eaten) Downside is the hours. They open 7am-2pm everyday but closed Mondays. read more

Tucked away in a place you'd never think to look. Alia's has great food. It's not just catering like the name suggests. We were there for breakfast. They have an unusual, well prepared selection. My husband had an omelet with hummus and felafel that was scary to order but worth taking a chance on. I had an Irish omelet that was great. My only complaint was that the decor was 1983 in a bad way, and that because of that it seemed pretty run down. It's not quite funk enough to be a dive. I can see us going back if we think of it. read more

My family and I have been going to Alia's since we moved to Berkley almost 20 years ago. The food is great (breakfast or lunch) and the staff and owner are super nice. However we had a very unusual experience today that may be related to the catering side of the business. The cater started to verbally abuse one of the workers with a lot of swear words thrown around that could be heard inside the restaurant. It was like an episode of Hell's Kitchen. We normally only go to the restaurant on the weekends so we never experienced this before. One on the regular customers said it happens frequently. I can only assume it is the owner's son or a relative since it has been allowed to continue. It was so bad I may not go back. It is unacceptable for the business owner to allow this behavior. read more

I absolutely love coming here in the morning with my family. They are nice, accommodating and the prices and food are good. This is no fancy new wave brunch spot. This is a normal family restaurant where you can always find smiling faces and Ed, the owner waiting. read more

They catered a 100th birthday party for us, and the person who helped me on the phone couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. They ensured I didn't order/pay for more than I needed to, but even so, we had leftovers people could take with them. Everyone enjoyed the food, and the cost was very reasonable. read more

Please use them for all of your catering needs Customer service is amazing! They are so nice, and they have saved me when I'm in a bind. I use them for corporate training, and I can't always predict how many clients will show. I once had double my expected attendance. My family has been coming here for breakfast for years, many of the same cusomers have been also coming back for years. We pass many other restaurants on the way here, Once youve tries Alias you wont be happy with your run of the mill breakfasts. Fresh real bagels , Kaiser rolls and Jewish rye bread and a vegetarian egg white omelot are my personal favorites, Sam is our waitress.she tAkes a real interest in her customers and really seems to enjoy her job . Beware of a tip scam.... had an enjoyable breakfast with my wife and sister in law last Sunday morning. Food and service were good. Left a 5 dollar tip on the table for our $25 and change breakfast. As we were talking outside, our waitress comes outside and asked if everything was ok. We looked at each other then her and said yes everything was fine. She then said "Oh because you didn't leave a tip" almost in unison the 3 of said "there was $5 on the table". I then offered her the $4 from the change I was given. Seemed strange at the time, seemed even stranger as we all thought about it. No wait person had EVER followed us out of any restaurant. Wondering more if she does this 3 or 4 times a shift and grabs extra cash. Hope I'm wrong.... but just wondering read more
