    Authentic Bengali fish (hilsa)
    Shayer S.

Stopped here while passing through Houston on the way to Austin as I was craving some authentic Bangladeshi food. Definitely a hole in the wall. There's a very small and limited grocery area but was pleasantly surprised to see a good selection of fishes eaten by Bangladeshis. We had white rice and shorshe ilish (hilsa fish in mustard gravy). The ilish was great and satisfying. I would have tried more dishes but unfortunately they were out of vegetables and daal (lentil soup). We came at an odd time which was neither lunch nor dinner so that's understandable. While we were eating there, many bengali patrons came in, bought food and conversed with the owner. In Austin, we can only find Indian and Pakistani biryani so we were super excited to find Bangladeshi style biryani and took an order of goat biryani along with samosas to go. And on man, did this hit the spot or what! Cravings were definitely satisfied! The biryani had the aroma and taste we were looking for and the samosas were straight up excellent! Best part - The rice, fish, tea, samosas and biryani total was under $20 so no complaints on pricing! Customer service is usually lacking in these types of joints and unfortunately this place was no exception. No one was friendly but not rude either. We waited a long time for the biryani only to find out it was packed and sitting by the counter for a while. The cashier then later said he thought we knew the food was ready and I'm like how am I supposed to know if no one mentions anything? Anyway, I don't doubt any of the negative reviews here regarding unfriendly service, poor management, miscommunication and stale food but I don't put too much weight in those categories for cheap ethnic hole in the walls.

    Roaches in samosas.

All Bengal is a horrible restaurant. It is infested with roaches and mice, and you can find the evidence in the kitchen. I know this because I used to work there. The owner told be to simply take the roaches out of the cooked food, and kill them. You do not have to disclose that you found roaches in the food to the customers. What a customer does not know, will not hurt the customer and we will be able to continue with our business. Absolutely horrible. I quit after two days of trying to reason with the owner about the rodents and the dirtiness of the kitchen. Eat at All Bengal at your own risk.

    Fungus after 2 days!

Yes my that's fungus. I bought these Gulab Jamun from All Bengal on Sunday. Today is Tuesday. This is horrible. They are off of Hillcroft and 59s I called them just now and they said all mithai is made daily. No way in hell... for the sake of your health avoid

Someone had suggested I'd try the samosas from here. The person behind the counter (owner or manager, I don't know) was so sweet. Highly recommend this place for their aloo (potato) samosa and keema (beef) samosa.

Goat briyanni, fish curry, tandoori chicken, and lentil soup.

I have been coming here off and on for four years and I have never been this disappointed. I came recently because I missed their fish curry and goat biryani. Their curries and biryanis used to be so flavorful and now everything is bland and/or over cooked. The only thing here that was good was their cheap and delicious samosas.

Simply salty samosas/Vegetable Samosa Absolutely disgusting

I waited one hour for my order. The daal kachori was good so I assumed the same great flavor would come through on the samosas. However, after I bit into the aloo (potato) samosa I almost vomited. The first bite introduced a wave of salt in my mouth that made me want to retch. So, I decided to call them and their reply to my complaint was to throw the samosas away. Horrible customer service and terrible wait time. If only I could give zero stars! The headache I have right now and the money spent is not worth it. Simply terrible.

    Dust in restroom

Food, samosas and mithais are excellent. The dust & dirt in the restroom qualify to be on the Historical Register. They were brought over from Noah's Ark.

Restaurant, they got a tv set showing Bangladeshi programs.

I say "main server" because there is a roving band of servers to make sure they don't miss anything! All the dishes were wonderful, however everything had some "spice", so be careful if you "can't take the heat". The menu is huge, so I believe there has to be something for everyone. The ambience is minimalist, clean bright, "food hall", but in a good way. Not a dark cozy date night place, but more bright, family restaurant decor. Because there are so many choices, I will be back, and could probably eat here all week long and not repeat a meal. Full disclosure however, we were there on a Tuesday, so everything was very chill. I hear this place is CRAZY crowded on weekends, so plan accordingly.

The menu is pretty extensive. While waiting for our food we were given cucumbers and carrots with a dill yogurt type sauce. If I knew how spicy the food was going to be, I wouldn't have enjoyed them before my entree. I specifically asked what the mild dishes were but my food was still inedible. Unfortunately I cannot tolerate anything spicy. And apparently they do not accommodate heat levels so you get what you get. Literally everything we were served except the naan was way too spicy for me. Even my son who enjoys spicy food found the "medium" was very spicy. Food aside, the service was not very hospitable. This place runs like a well oiled machine. The service is fast but don't expect any niceties. When we were asked how we liked the food, my son mentioned the heat level and was basically reprimanded on how "next time he should listen to the server". With it being one of the top restaurants, this experience has left me scratching my head. Overall, I'm glad I was able to finally give this place a shot but for me, it doesn't live up to the hype.

Pros -There were a lot of vegetarian options that taste good. I actually thought the vegetarian choices tastes better than non-veg. My favorite veg dish was the mushroom masala fry, and my favorite non-veg was the Virudhu Nagar Chicken Pakora. -We got seated upstairs and although it's a lot of going up and downstairs to get food, I thought it was nice to be seated upstairs near the entrance so we got to see the whole restaurant. The buffet area looks impressive. I liked this portion of the restaurant but do feel that space is limited especially with large parties. -Staff were all very nice and helpful. -There was a dosa station. I didn't get to try because I was just so full! Cons -We went during lunchtime and although we didn't have to wait for a table, it was crowded at the buffet area when getting food, and at times people take a longer time getting food. -The non-veg was a bit disappointing as the taste was a bit bland, especially the curry types which should be bursting with flavors. -They offered a special fish dish but it has bones which I don't prefer. -They did not have my favorite puri when we were there! No Indian buffet restaurant should ever run out of puri or not offer! -There was mango ice cream and a variety of other desserts!

Then the flow of dishes start- first with chass ( buttermilk)and one more beverage - lemonade, or shikanji , all good for digestive purpose traditional Indian drinks you take with meals.... When I go, the starve the whole day and go for dinner ... lol... its just not fair to the delicious experience otherwise... There is a huge spread. And lastly followed by ghee khichidi or either rice or millet and one more rice item, sometimes even plain rice. After u r really totally done and plates cleared. They come around with coffee or tea! If only you were sitting in a garden with 100's of tables overlooking the mountains and had noone waiting for u to clear so their can occupy the seats.... remember even those people waiting would have starved the whole day .... We had a plane to catch later that day, so were elated to find that they were serving a buffet lunch, i.e. no long wait to order food and wait for it to be prepared and brought to our table, as happened at Aga's the last time we went---a whopping 30-45 minute wait! A tell-tale sign of good things in any Indian restaurant: the large venue was 90% full and we were the only folks NOT from the Indian subcontinent or Middle East! The buffet was actually high quality, including two goat dishes which we loved. (All too often, Indian buffets are exclusively chicken and vegetarian, both very meh but undoubtedly cheaper for the restaurant.) Servers were gracious, lovely and attentive young women...there was nothing not to like! Will definitely come back next time I'm visiting Houston. Would be curious to try their regular menu. Overall I'd say their food quality was very close or equal to that of Aga's. And of course, being a buffet, you can have much more of it if you like. Everything was good: appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. Lastly, there was plenty of parking, another plus vs Aga's which is in a strip mall with lots of surrounding businesses so you have to hunt a bit to find a spot, and usually not very close by.

Granted a group of 12 people showed up unannounced right around opening time, the service was still a bit on the slower side. We waited about 30-35 minutes to receive our samosas and another 15 minutes to receive our Thali plates. All twelve of us ordered the same thing--the Regular Thali. The Thali is a platter that comes with 3 different curries or stews, 3 types of breads, rice, dessert, and a samosa. While I am not very knowledgeable about Indian cuisine and have no basis of comparison, the three curries and breads were delicious. Of the three curries, the paneer masala was my favorite and I enjoyed all three breads. The vegetable curry and lentil stew were both equally delicious and offered a change of pace from the paneer masala. The samosa was a bit of a miss for me due to the shell being a bit on the thick side, but the spices and tamarind chutney were good, but not outstanding. The benefit of ordering the Thali is that it is an affordable way to sample a very good variety of foods with the option or order more of whatever included curry, bread, samosa, rice, dessert completely free as a part of the Thali set. Would I go back? Yes, I would go back to have the Thali again but I'm unsure if I would be adventurous enough to order a full portion of a single curry or dish simply out of unfamiliarity with Indian cuisine. However, I would avoid Gayatri Bhavan if my boss isn't taking an extended lunch break with us.
