I would have appreciated even a quick message letting me know if he was too busy or no longer wanted to take the job.

I understand--I ran a business myself years ago--and fees for credit cards are high. But still, it is not a good way to show appreciation for good customers. They've always done what they said they would and come when they said they would. In fact, I think they've gone above and beyond.
