I really wanted to love this place, for their authentic take on Jamaican cuisine, but, for me it…read morewas just ok. The location is not in the best neighborhood, and by looks of their front door (iron bars), it very well might be an unsafe area. The restaurant inside is clean, I'll give them that. Tables and floors were well kept and wiped down after guests left. There were a couple ladies behind the counter who were friendly and gave us some time to review the menu. Jason and I both ordered the same thing, goat curry (curry goat) with rice and peas and it came side a small side of steamed cabbage and a few sweet plantains as well. We took our food to go and all the way home it smelled go good! Immediately when I opened the container I knew right away, it was going to be a hit or miss (for me). The color or the goat was very yellow, which means, this curry was more turmeric than actual curry power. Being from the Caribbean, you know the difference between the 2 things.... Nevertheless, we ate, and we both liked the food, it was not something that I felt like I could not stop eating, nor thought 'wow I can't wait to go back'. The meat of the goat was tender for sure. The flavors that I'm familiar with, were not there. And I understand that this might be the restaurant's way of cooking, and their style, and that's totally ok, it's just for me this was not one of my favorite Jamaican spots.

Everything tasted great. The chicken was crispy, the rice and peas were well seasoned, and the oxtail gravy brought everything together perfectly. The plantains were a standout, sweet like candy and cooked just right. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. However, the ambiance felt more like a hole in the wall spot rather than a polished dining environment. That being said, the quality and flavor of the food definitely make up for it. Overall, it's a great place to grab authentic, delicious Jamaican food, and I'd definitely come back again.

I have been coming here since I moved to the area pre-pandemic back in 2019. At the time, I was…read moreeager to try the local restaurants and find a spot that could be one of my "regular" places. The first few times I visited Chelly's there was always a pretty decent sized line (a mark of a good restaurant usually). I'm no stranger to island food, but I also don't know many of the dishes all too well so I always have questions. The first few times I came I met Chelly, the owner of the establishment. She was warm and welcoming and took time to explain what everything was even knowing that there was a line to get her delicious food. I ordered the chicken curry as my first choice with rice and peas, cabbage, and a Jamaican beef patty. The food was OUTSTANDING! Flavorful, fresh, full of character and the portions are BIG so it's a great value. They had earned my business from day one and since then I had been coming back on and off when I was craving Jamaican food. Fast forward to today, I'm still a loyal customer and I want to say...this is the friendliest, most welcoming restaurant I have ever been to. Sam usually takes care of me and always greets me when I come in, she's personable, and loved getting to know the clientele to the point where she remembers conversations you shared and will ask you "hey how's _____ going?" I really love the welcoming atmosphere. The thing is, it's not just her.....her husband Matthew, is the same way! He's super nice, super welcoming, takes the time to explain the food, gives samples, even sometimes hooks me up with a little extra on the house. It doesn't stop there though....Viannie is also just as nice, friendly, welcoming and enjoyable to be served by. The whole establishment is bursting with personality and friendly attitudes. THIS is something I highly value and has seemingly become lost in this post-pandemic world. Not at Chelly's, they take pride in not only serving up delicious food full of flavor and soul, but also serving it up with a smile and attitude that warrants becoming a regular. If you haven't dined here, or aren't sure about dining here....drop what you're doing and give this place a try. Also worth mentioning, their lunch special deal for 6.99 is a TREMENDOUS value given the size of the portions and the freshness of the food. Small businesses such as Chelly's need your support. We are living in a capitalist world and big name businesses are running small businesses out. Don't let that happen, support your local establishments and family owned businesses. Chelly's has earned my business for life and they should earn yours too.

We arrived around 11 PM on a Friday and the place had great energy. It was lively without feeling overwhelming, and a few tables looked like they were celebrating special occasions, which added to the vibe. The music was excellent and honestly brought back a bit of that nostalgic, high school party feel in the best way. We ordered a couple of drinks and they were definitely strong and well made. The service stood out just as much as the atmosphere. The owner was incredibly pleasant and attentive, checking in with us several times to make sure we were taken care of. You could tell she genuinely cared about the guests. I also learned the owners are Trini and Guyanese, which I loved because it added a nice personal touch to the experience. As a first time visitor, I really appreciated that she thanked us for coming when we left. It made the experience feel welcoming and personal. I'll definitely be back to try the food. As a vegetarian, I'm hoping to make a special request since there aren't many Chinese vegetarian options on the menu, but I'm confident they'll accommodate it. We left after 1 AM and people were still coming in, so it's clearly a popular late night spot. Great location right off University with plenty of parking, which makes it super convenient. Overall, a great night, great energy, and a place I'll be returning to.

I can say I have come back here about 3 times in 2 weeks. Primarily most Jamaican restaurants carry maybe 2 dishes that taste well with a side of not so great customer service. However this is the complete opposite at Island Flavor, the staff is truly amazing each time I have gone there. Very welcoming and we always crack a few jokes each time. I've had the brown stew which is extremely flavorful and is not usually a go to for me but I thoroughly enjoyed it, fried chicken is not dry by any means and that's always a huge thing I look out for and finally had the Rasta pasta as it was recommended to me prior and I had a sample, the flavor was in my mouth for the next 15 mins. Keep in mind for this dish and seafood specialty dishes happen on Fridays but be sure to check them out any day as there are specials almost daily. Highly recommended.

The restaurant is located on the west side strip of stores and restaurants -- next to a Chinese restaurant. The place is airy and bright. It's pretty basic inside. The menu is on the wall above. You help yourself to drinks from a cooler. We both got the lunch brown stew chicken in a small size. They also have large, but the smaller one was perfect. You can choose which rice --and we both had peas n rice (rice n peas?), plus sautéed cabbage, and plantains. The chicken comes in a delicious brown gravy and I requested extra gravy on my rice. We sat in to eat -- but all meals are served in takeout containers. The chicken was fall off the bone tender. Everything was wonderful. Prices were reasonable. The staff were friendly. We will certainly return in the future. We will certainly return to

If you're not good with spicy foods, ask for anything with peppers to not include them. My husband ordered the stewed boneless chicken with paratha roti and pumpkin plus potatoes as sides. The roti was fresh and hot. The pumpkin was my favorite. The chicken was easy to eat and tasted good, not dry. The potatoes were soft. I got a double and it was amazing. Lots of tamarind flavor and some curry and cumin tastes. I love chickpeas and there were plenty of it stuffed inside. Gotta eat it quick or else the shell becomes soggy. I also ordered a bake and shark. First time trying it. The crispy texture of the fried fish plus the soft outer shell along with the lettuce and tomato all tasted delicious together. However, the fish was way too salty for me. After the first few bites, I couldn't eat anymore of it. My husband who has a much stronger taste palette even agreed it was on the salty side. Will definitely come back to try more items!
