We are maybe one of the rare homes without a gas meter. This year we decided to install a gas powered tankless water heater. Stay with me. In the process of trying to get calls returned from SDGE we learned that due To new regulations we must move the existing gas line away from electrical box. That was a can of worms we did not plan for. It involved contacting certified people to dig and refill the hole needed for SDGE to do the work. I was provided with a list of maybe 2-3 hundred companies certified. After contacting 5 or 6 and having all my calls ignored and being overwhelmed by the volume of paperwork etc, I was given a name by one of the SDGE inspectors. It was John Osthimer with ATF, All Trenches Filled in Carlsbad. Suddenly things got better. He not only dug the required trench, he contacted a plumbing company, the necessary people at SDGE to do inspection, he also arranged to have the pipe cut and moved. Gave me a list of the order things needed to be done and was kind, courteous and helped me keep my sense of humor and perspective. His follow up and calm demeanor was a bright light in the fog of bureaucracy and regulations. Oh yes, he also filled the hole with the required sand and dirt mixture to protect the pvc pipe. We had to move our gas meter to upgrade to a larger flow meter. The new meter had to be moved away from the house, even though it had been in the same spot for 65 years, apparently it was too dangerous to stay there. We moved the location per SDG&E and John did the backfill for the new line as a certified backfiller by SDG&E. He always picked up his phone, and was flexible to SDG&E's schedule. He had a deep understanding of the process, the timing, the people that were involved and did the job right the 1st time. I got 6 bids and All Trenches' price was fair, but not the lowest. I am so thrilled that I choose them because it was done correctly the 1st time, in a timeframe that surprised SDGE and the city. I found All Trenches Filled on SDGE's list of certified trench companies for moving my SDGE gas meter approximately 15 feet. SDGE requirements make a gas meter move a complicated process. After contacting four of the SDGE certified companies, I selected All Trenches Filled to dig and backfill the trench. John Osthimer with ATF immediately responded and provided a very reasonable bid as well as a certificate of insurance. John worked very hard to dig the trench the depth and width required by SDGE. He then worked directly with SDGE to schedule the meter move. Once the meter was moved, John backfilled the trench and hole with required sand. Throughout this process, he was careful, neat and organized. He set up hazard cones and protected the hole/trench with a lot of covering. Everything went as planned even through there was a lot of rain after the holes were dug. He was easy to work with, responded to all my questions, and was diligent during the entire 4 week process.
