I haven't begun to scratch the surface yet, but when I went in to grab coconut sweet bread and bread pudding to bring to a work potluck, I came out with those and a whole wheat currant roll that, when warmed, was pretty darn tasty. The coconut bread definitely needed some kind of spread, but not being a coconut connoisseur, perhaps I'm just a bit ignorant in not knowing that coconut breads are dry. The bread pudding was just a smidge overspiced, but definitely good in small portions. I waited in line (lines are common on the weekends it appears from my vantage point - I live nearby) only to get to the counter and discover they don't take credit cards at all. Would be nice if that were made clear somewhere. I'll be back to try more of their pastries, maybe some bread. Will definitely be picking up currant rolls again. read more

I came in here looking for something for a potluck dinner once and I'm really glad I did. Everyone on yelp talks about the currant rolls and the coconut bread, which I'm sure are good, but one thing keeps me coming back here: the guava turnovers. I love turnovers and usually you can only get the ones with apple filling. If you haven't had a turnover before it is like the calzone version of an apple pie. A triangle of puff pastry with fruit inside. Combine that with a delicious guava filling and you have the perfect pastry. This is the only place I've seen that has the guava flavor, but they also have pineapple and the traditional apple. The first time I went they only had one left so it's a popular item. Get there early or go on a weekday! Also, when I went this kid (maybe 10) was sent to get bread at Allan's by his mom and he got pretty confused about how much bread he was supposed to buy. I love this place. I am not West Indian, but I feel like an honorary one. I am fluent in the delicious pastries and breads at Allans. The food is usually fresh. I like getting their early, so I can get hot bread. There currant rolls are fantastic. The coconut bake is amazing. The sweet buns are my favorite. The beef patties/ chicken patties are the best I have ever had!! The service is also great. It is organized and everyone smiles and uses their manners. I know that sounds silly, but manners are rare to find these days in any establishment. I work nearby and come here at leasdt once a week, for a sweet pick me up. Horrible horrible service. Went in to pick up a few treats and used my card. They charge $2.00 for credit/debit card purchases!! That is so damned illegal and i am shocked that they are allowed to get away with this. When I questioned it, the woman at the counter told me that they have to pay for each swipe. WTF?! yes..that's why you are a business with a credit card processing account. That is part of your operational costs. You don't charge your customers for that. She also stated that their prices were much lower than they should be...$10 for a small piece of cake is a low price? In a dinky place like that? It's not like their pastries are good, they are subpar. The coconut tart has so much preservatives that my entire mouth got itchy after eating it. I threw out a $24 bag of pastries because of this. Definitely the best retro Caribbean bakery in Brooklyn, always packed the line is long and a childhood favorite bakery of mine. Their signature bakery item is the currant rolls, they are the best and I love coconut buns too. I live a few blocks from here, so I stop by every once in a while whenever I walk by for a couple of chicken patties and a juice. It's an old neighborhood institution. Everyone come here if you're looking for classic Caribbean baked good, such as current rolls or coconut bread. I like their chicken patties. The beef one is too dry and the vegetarian one has no flavor. They used to sell a fantastic sorrel juice, but the little company that made it doesn't have it anymore. This review is based on only one purchase, but I loved almost everything about it nonetheless. I ordered the Poulourie with tamarind sauce. I was in HEAVEN. I didn't even know what a Poulourie was, but as I found out, they were deep fried dough with dry curry inside. The tamarind sauce was sweet and tangy and a little spicy. While the dough was too greasy for my taste, the flavor was on-point. I highly recommend ordering the Poulourie. read more

This place is a disappointment. It seems that the products are not being made with the best ingredients or they simply don't care about their customers. I am from Trinidad and I know what bake tastes and feel like. The bake was extremely hard and it did not smell fresh. I bought one on Thursday and when I got home, it was very hard and didn't smell good. I went back on Saturday took it back and was told they weren't taking it back and I could not get my money back. I am very unhappy with the service I received at Allen's bakery. My sister placed an order for a black cake on Tuesday August 4th and scheduled a pick up date Thursday August 6th @ 10am. She specifically ordered a cake with cherry brandy and wine.The person took the order and charged her credit card. She received a confirmation email. I arrived at the store after the pick up time to find out they had no record of the cake order. The store manager spent 20 minutes looking for a cake. She eventually came out to the front to tell me that they didnt have the cake I actually ordered but there was a cake in the back that they was willing to decorate. I made the manager aware that I was in a crunch for time. They offer to drop off at the house and gave me $25 back. When the cake was delivered, I opened the box and took a picture. The cake was lopsided like they didn't even level it before decorating it. You can imagine my sister's disappointed this her wedding cake. Its was supposed to be a black cake. When we cut into the cake it looked dry, brown in color and hard in texture. She has ordered cake from Allen's many times in years prior and thoroughly enjoyed their pastries. However, I am really disappointed in the service and the attitude of the workers at Allen's bakery. Initially, I was so excited to try this place. I'm all about patronizing local businesses but I'm very particular about cake. However, I decided to give this place to try. I ordered the cake four days in advance and asked that it be ready or pickup Sunday at noon, the rep said she'll put it in for Sunday at 11 just in case. On my way to pick up the cake, I called at a quarter to noon. I waited in the bakery for 1 hour 10 minutes! While I was in the store waiting for my cake, I called to see what the delay was, I watched a rep ( who I later found out her name was Laura) hang up on me!Supposedly the cakes was being iced... then when I asked again, it was being "boxed." The cake was supposed to have five dotted i's however only two were dotted... also, they gave me the wrong cake because I ordered and paid for mango and pineapple however I received all pineapple. Of course that is something that I wouldn't know until the cake was sliced. I will not return to Allen's Bakery. Horrible customer service. So today I went in Allen's bakery to buy a currents roll and a carrot cake. The little girl at the register is a nasty disgusting person. I was next in line to order and she doesn't say anything she just stares at me. Finally I get to put my order I hand her the money to pay and she just drops the change down for me rudely! So I stand to the side and she takes other people's order and I see them getting what they order. So after seeing everyone get their stuff I ask her how long will it take to get my order!! And this rude twat says with the stinkest attitude "I don't know because I'm only taking the orders" meanwhile everyone else ordered from her and got their stuff! So I just laughed it off because I didn't want to argue with her. The other customers there also shook their heads. So I asked one of the little boys if I can get my order and he gives me my order with no bag I had to ask for a bag!! The best baked goods! My family has been going to Allan's Bakerysince before I was born. Every Sunday after church my father and I would stop in to buy Bread pudding, bread and currant rolls before meeting with family for dinner. In 2005 I had the pleasure of visiting St. Vincent and stopped in at the Allan's bakery shop there, which was equally delicious. Everything is always fresh. Their cakes are absolutely delicious! I can't think of a birthday party without an Allan's Bakery cake to top off the festivities. My only gripe is that although their cakes are delicious and nicely decorated they aren't as beautifully decorated as most cakes are today. Then again I rarely go to a wedding and find that the intricately designed cakes are delicious. I love Allan's bakery and plan on coming for years to come! read more

I will say that the fish and chicken pies (patties) are AMAZING and are very very delicious and worth the trek depending on where you are coming from! One thing - I know that people are "do or die" about the currant rolls which are good but they are not the best. They are a few other spots in Queens/ Brooklyn (wont name) that are better than here. Allan's is a great bakery in Flatbush. Specializing in Trinidadian breads and other baked goods. They also make excellent, reasonably priced cakes for special occasions with your choice of fruit fillings. Allan's gets very busy on the weekends, sometimes with lines out the door. read more

My husband insisted to go to this bakery. He told me that many years ago he had visited this place and bought the best Jamaican beef patties ever. Well, we finally got a chance to go and I spent over 30 dollars on some items. All I can tell you is that my money was wasted. I like the bakery. Over the years it has changed a lot. Especially in the workers, More and more Americans work here now. I used to love that old feeling of hearing an accent greet me, it reminded me of being home on the islands. The foods are okay, not as great as they used to be. Allans is a staple in the West - Indian community. They are most famous for their currant rolls (a popular pastry in Trinidad and the rest of the English speaking Caribbean) with its light flaky crust, it's the best out there, they sell like crack, which is good because they are always freshly baked by default. The cassava pone, coconut drops and whole wheat coconut "bakes" are wonderful. It's a shame they have not mastered Trinidad - Style hops bread or yellow buns.
