I've been ordering cakes from Allan's Bakery for years! They are classic!!! Great cake density, amazing (not super sweet) frosting, and their pineapple filling is the best that I have ever eaten. Line is always long, but that's because their baked goods (pastries, breads, etc) are fresh and delicious. Family owned business, with great morals and values. They make the community what it is. Love this place! They have the best cakes and patties! I would not recommend buying a slice of cake because they are always old slices (likely cut from cakes that were not picked up). If you're going to have some cake from here, wait for a special occasion when you can buy a whole (fresh & delicious!) cake. My bake and salt fish spot. The line is long at times but the issue isn't the line it's the Middle aged woman who spends a lot of time talking on her AirPods while the line grows. I've been watching her for 2 years now just be so rude and clueless. I don't know if she's one of the owners but I don't care for her lack of customer service. Placed an order for delivery. Items were missing and incorrect items sent. I called and spoke with someone and told her what the issue was, she handed the phone off to someone else's and I could hear her explaining the situation. The person came on the line and acted as though she couldn't hear me and hung up the phone on me. I called back 4 more times and got hung up on each time. When I finally got someone who would speak to me, they told me they were having "phone problems" How convenient.. He then told me I had a few options, I could contact Door dash and they would refund me for the missing items or I could come into the store and pick up the missing items. Not once did he apologize for the phone issue or the messed up delivery order. I am all for supporting small business, especially those in the food industry and now more than ever because of Covid. But, the service I received was unacceptable at any time. I will not spend another dime at Allan's bakery, not because of the quality of their product or even the fact that my delivery was incorrect, but because of their blatant lack of customer service or concern. read more

Much like the other Caribbean folk I've been getting baked goods here for as long as I could remember. Naturally currant rolls are always in my bag when I leave. Sometimes they don't have enough currants in the rolls for my liking but it's always delicious. When they just come out the oven it's the best experience in the world. Not my first review for Allan's Bakery, but had to drop another note... this past weekend we were celebrating a wedding and direct action march for black trans and queer lives and Allan's team delivered on this amazing photo cake. The workers usually move at a fast pace because the lines are always long. Another thing to keep in mind is that this bakery is located in a busy area where it's hard to find parking and there's always traffic. So prepare yourself mentally to deal with a bit of a congested area depending on the day and time . If you're West Indian and you live in the 5 boroughs or have family that live in the 5 boroughs and you've never had anything from here, you need your island card revoked immediately. If I'm going to visit family in a different state, they make me bring bread from here or I can't stay with them (LOL). I would come during the week if you don't want to wait on a long line. I pass by this bakery at least twice a day, and without fail, there is always a long line inside. Curious to see what everyone else in the neighborhood knew that I didn't, I went in and stood in the long line. Allan's is a rather large shop located on Nostrand between Maple and Midwood. Like most places in the neighborhood, it's more of a take-out sort of place, as there's no seating. And in all honesty, because the place is so dingy looking, it's probably better that way. The storefront is with a cheesy neon sign, the place looks like a suburban donut shop (like a dirty Dunkin' Donuts), and there's no air conditioning. But what they lack in design, they make up in goodies. While standing in line, I noticed that the two best selling items were the coconut bake (which looked like a large slab of bread resembling cornbread) and their loaves of bread. Knowing that I'd be unable to finish all that bread by myself before it went stale, I decided to get the smaller treats. I got the currant roll, the coconut drops, and the red velvet cake. Of the things I got, the currant roll was the best. It was some sort of puff pastry rolled up with currants inside, baked, and then sliced into a somewhat cylindrical shape. While the currants were delicious, and the inside layers of the pastry soft and chewy, the outside was a bit lacking as it lacked the flaky goodness of a delicate puff pastry. The red velvet cake was a little too sweet. While I enjoyed how super rich and dense the cake was, it tasted like it had been in the refrigerator a bit too long. Also, although the frosting was flavorful, it was a bit too sweet. And most interesting were the coconut drops. You get six baby-fist shaped breads for $1.50. These baked goods feel as a cross between a thick biscuit and a soda bread. But unlike either of those two, the coconut drops are sweet as they have a slightly sugared outside. Though it was a little bland, I did like the chewy coconut texture. The best thing about the place was the price! I got all three items for like $5 (I remember both the currant roll and the coconut drops being $1.50, but not how much the red velvet costed). And because the red velvet was so sweet, I only nibbled on it every now and then, so it lasted me three days. Lastly, this place closes super early. I don't know the exact time, but when I pass by it in the evening a little past six, their doors are already shut. But considering the lines here, maybe they just sold out for the day... not too sure why... read more

My Trini, Guyanese and Grenadian friends raved on and on about them, and one day I went with a friend to Allans and I've been going back ever since. Simply put - they make the best currants rolls anywhere in NYC. Period. Their currants rolls are outrageously, egregiously even implausibly delicious. Outlandishly buttery and filled with large currants that are plump, juicy and bursting with sweetness. Just utter perfection; the outside is flaky and crisp, while the inside is so moist and chewy that you can't eat these and drive or you'll crash when your eyes roll back in your head. As a child, I went to Allan's Bakery very Sunday after church for bread pudding, hard dough bread, pastry like beef patties, fish cakes, current rolls, tennis rolls and coconut buns. Whenever there was a birthday in the family we got all of our cakes with either strawberry or lemon filling from Allan's and they were so good, especially when mixed with Allan's signature icing. Over the years Allan's has expanded to a larger space and just about everything is the same except the cake. With a recent change in management the cake is definitely either missing some ingredients or it's a new recipe because it's not as moist as it used to be. Most people go here for the loaves of bread which are so much better than bread from the supermarket. It tastes homemade and is very affordable. When I go, I get bakes and saltfish which is my favorite breakfast dish or evening snack. Because its so good here it usually sold out by the evening. A friend at school told me about Allan's so i googled and found it was a minute's walk away. Walking in, it was packed and there was a lot of bread, reminding me of bakeries in Jamaica. Here are my reviews on the food, saving the best for last: -Tennis roll: my friend's favorite roll. it had an interesting flavor (is that orange i taste?) but was a bit dry for my liking. -Bread pudding: I liked this better but still nothing phenomenal. -Chicken bake: very interesting combination of spices with very finely minced chicken. not as much meat as i had expected. the flaky pastry on the outside was amazing though. apparently a classic touch in West Indian pastries. -Raisin currant roll: the BEST thing I had here. they had just taken out a fresh batch and the delicious layers of flaky crust were warm, and cinammon-y, and sweet, and DELICIOUS. of course, it put me on a sugar high but in a good way. if this was the only thing i had tried, then i would have given a 5-star rating. :D read more

Yum! I love getting my black cake / fruit cake (with icing) from here. My boyfriend is a big fan of the cheesecake (I am partial to juniors). The prices are affordable and everything is fresh - there is usually a line out the door so items are being sold and there is lots of turn over. I have to say, I wouldn't spend money on the patties (they are not like jamaican patties. They taste more like baked empanadas - more doughy/bread like than a crispy crust. I've been a customer since my freshman year of high school (that was ages ago) and will continue to be. The red velvet cake has NEVER disappointed. It's moist, flavorful, and the frosting is to die for. I also get the currant rolls and patties!!! And don't forget the bun and cheese for Easter. Recently I had the wheat currant rolls, not used to it, but it definitely didn't disappoint. Everything here is always fresh. Allan's plays a very strong roll in the Caribbean community.
