I had a project in Washington DC that ran for 2 years. This store was just blocks from the project and I had stopped in a few times during that time. I never bought anything live but Henry was always super helpful. The experience stayed with me and I ended up buying 6 pairs of shoes (!) from Henry over the past 2 years or so after I got home to San Diego. All done remotely and without any issues. The latest order has me placing the order while traveling to London for work and had them shipped to my office in San Diego. Needless to say this raised all kinds of issues with the credit card fraud department, but Henry has been patient throughout. Great customer service, though, creates customers for life, and that's what Allen Edmonds does at this location! Two years ago, while visiting Washington, D.C. on business (I do this almost yearly), I bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds. That night, I decided on a Walnut pair of McAllisters, a breathtaking wing-tip. Henry Clavijo worked with me that night, sizing my feet like a professional and giving me suggestions on the purchase. Shortly after buying, the original pair developed a weird crease on the side of one foot. Henry and his manager at the time, Chris, had me bring them in and swap them out. Since getting those replacements, I've worn them about 30% of my workdays over the last two years and they're as breathtaking as they were the first day I strolled through a convention floor with them. Yesterday, almost two years after purchasing my first, I was ready to buy another pair of Allen Edmonds...in black this time. I went back to the same store and, low and behold, Henry was there to greet me. He remembered my name, the shoes I bought, and even the little problem I had with the first pair. Seriously. I have coached kids in football whose parents have a hard time remembering my name. Henry met me twice....what a classy touch! Henry worked with me yesterday to make sure I wanted my new black shoes to be McAllisters, always professional and never pushy. My heart stayed with the McAllisters, and I love them. Allen Edmonds shoes are impeccable; purchasing these shoes is not like purchasing $60 pieces of crap from the department store. No....buying these shoes are an investment in yourself and your feet. I have never had shoes or boots that have looked or felt as close to new after even a YEAR as my original Walnut McAllisters do after two. Need proof? Check the pictures below. People like Henry are why Allen Edmonds has such a cult following. While these shoes are amazing in their own right, made by fine American craftsmen with the best materials available, the customer service is unreal. In about eight years, I will be bringing my son to buy his first pair of Allen Edmonds...and it will be right here in Washington, DC. I was there a Sunday afternoon when they still had their opening sale. The store still had a very fresh, new carpet smell paired with the leather. Service was very personal but two sales people was too limited to deal with the amount of customers that day, mostly because of the staff being knowledgable and very service-minded. It stressed them and made them miss small things like shoe polish that I wanted. I wasn't charged for it but I had liked to have it with me when I left. Now I'll have to find my walnut shoeshine elsewhere when back in Sweden. The sale had emptied, at least strained, their stock of shoes so they were out of some of the models and sizes. They offered very kindly to ship ship the shoes when getting them, but being an international visitor to DC it wasn't an offer that I was able use. Staff was kind enough to give me contact information so I could pre-order things for a next visit to DC. read more

I had a slight problem the other day when I visited the 1071 H St NW store and reported it to Allen Edmond. Not to go into a lot of detail the situation has been resolved. The store manager Henry and I discussed the issue and I am satisifed with the manner it has been address. Sometime issues occur and corrective action can be taken at it's lowest level. Allen Edmonds makes beautiful shoes that are Made in America. However, getting the right size can be very tricky. I bought my first pair at Nordstrom, where I was talked into the wrong size because I was told the leather would stretch (untrue), so they were a total loss. Nordstrom only carries a limited array of sizes and widths, whereas the AE retail stores carries every size and width under the sun. If you are interested in AE, come here and try on a bunch of sizes so you find your perfect fit. I can't emphasize trying on their shoes enough because for my feet, they are hard to fit. Customer service, however, is somewhat weak here and not particularly gracious given the price point of the product. Also, after dropping $900 on 2 pairs of shoes, you'd think they would validate your parking, but they don't. The CityCenter garage is very expensive, so try circling the block for parking before you go underground. read more

This is consistently the friendliest and most helpful men's clothing store I have been to so far. If you're seeing sales on Allen Edmonds at Jos A. Bank or Nordstrom, I would wait for sales here just because of the great experience you will get. They will let you try on shoes even if they know you won't buy that day, and they won't pressure you to buy anything. But because of this, I didn't want to buy AE shoes anywhere else. They will make suggestions, and this staff is one of the most knowledgeable about their products that I have seen. You can ask them many questions about their shoes and expect to get very detailed answers. The manager, Abby, is particularly very knowledgeable about each kind of shoe they stock and can give you very good, detailed advice on what you are looking for. She even spotted an Allen Edmonds shoelace on another pair of shoes I owned. If you come back into the store and they remember you, they will ask about your shoes and your experience wearing them and can give you advice on how to further take care of them. Their shoes may seem very pricey if you are used to buying shoes lower than $100, but you can sometimes get their higher end shoes on sale for $200-$250. These shoes are either hand-stitched or Goodyear welted which means that the shoes can be resoled and recrafted to last longer. Most shoes cheaper than $200 have the sole glued, or cemented to the upper. They really aren't going to last as long. Some also have something called corrected grain leather which is poorer quality. These have full grain leather which haven't been sanded or buffed and it shows. So if you get these shoes on sale, you are actually getting a much better deal in the long run than buying cheaper shoes. The higher end shoes are also Made in the USA if you want to avoid products made under sweatshop conditions. read more

I have two pairs of shoes from Allen Edmonds. A strand and a park avenue. When I got the strand, the sale associate suggested one size. When I got the park avenue, another one insisted on a different size. Well, the park avenue didn't loosen up and is terribly painful to walk in. Of course, there is no exchange when you've worn it out. The strand was the right size. What's the point of visiting the store when you're getting bad advice? That being said, if you get the right size shoe, it feel fantastic and lasts a while. The other problem is their sales associate, Mark Hoffman, at the H street location. You don't expect hard sales tactics from a place like Allen Edmonds, or unnecessary attitude from their sale people. This guy has some serious snark, not expecting that from a premier store like Edmonds. Sorry if I don't like the shoe and don't want to buy one right now, a $400 shoe isn't exactly cheap and your attitude doesn't help. read more

Henry and the Allen Edmonds staff, located in the City Center plaza in Washington DC, were extremely helpful in getting me a pair of shoes that was lost at FedEx's error. The shipment was delivered to the wrong address. I called the store in an effort to get the shoes some other way and the team managed to get me the shoes in a expedited shipment and in time for the weekend. This review is for Henry. As a manager, he is about as good as it gets. He knows his business and helped me get into a few pairs of shoes that fit very well. I wanted a pair of Park Avenues. For years, I would look at them and wish I could own a pair. I bought a pair ten years ago, but they hurt like crazy. A sales rep at the time, at another location, told me that I could not wear shoes built on that last. I accepted, as fact, that I could never wear any such shoe. I told Henry the same and he asked, "Who told you that?" He measured my foot and came back with a wide shoe that fit just fine. I now own four pairs of shoes built on that last. He also put me into a pair of Whitney shoes that I love. I wear them with my mil uniform and on weekends and everywhere. I asked which of the shoes the military guys buy and he said the Whitney. He explained that once they break through the cork and layer of foam, they love them. He was right, and they are great. For a wide foot man, that shoe is your ticket. I'm already an Allen Edmonds fan and supporter so I didn't need to be sold on the quality of these fine Made in USA dress shoes. Almost all dress shoes have fully shifted to overseas manufacturing and Allen Edmonds has been able to retain the highest percentage of its shoe manufacturing domestically. Henry, the assistant manager, took care of me and fitted me with a size that was a more perfect fit than my prior pair of Allen Edmonds. I was torn between a pair of suede navy blue pair of shoes and walnut colored Strand shoes, but went with the walnut Strands. Henry was very knowledgeable on the various shoe offerings and able to give helpful guidance on how to find a shoe that matches various business attire. They're not pushy here at all and it's not an intimidating process for folks that are new to the brand. Went back to California happy with my new pair of Allen Edmonds. read more

I bought my third pair of AEs online and even though I ordered the same size I have been wearing for over a year. These obviously were created using a different Last than the ones I am wearing. I have a pair of Cody loafers size 10 that fit me great but the new pair is way too big even though they are also a size 10. Purchased a pair online and had to return. Sales rep measured my foot and I discovered that I was a 13B, not D. Anywho, the shoe costs a bit more than the average dress shoe, however, the quality can't be beat. I ordered 3 pair (as I HATE having to worry about clothes and selection) and went about my day.
