Changes in medical insurance can be a whirlwind of new providers, processes & medication copays. This place is located downtown - with harder than normal parking. I was told it was in a less desirable part of town. To be honest almost all of downtown SD has its roughness. I used to live in a loft literally across the street on top of a CVS. Their system seemed to operate like initial COVID times. You walk up, wait outside. A staff member comes up to you with an IPAD. Another member packages it up then it is brought out to you. Since 2017, Allen's has delivered my Cancer Medication right to my door without fail or inconvenience, free of charge too! The staff really care about me, (they will also care about you too) and always go out of their way to make sure I have everything I need. The drivers are extremely courteous and friendly. I have been a medical provider for 10+ years. I have never experienced a pharmacist, pharmacy, or allied heath professionals that treat patients WORSE than Allen's Pharmacy. They treat patients with prejudice, disgust and disrespect. They put themselves above the health and well being of the patients they allegedly serve. My patients are homeless, they, like all humans, have medical conditions and deserve the same civil rights and dignity as any other human. But Allen's Pharmacy doesn't share this belief. I had my assistant call Allen's Pharmacy to check if they had a prescription in-stock. They said they didn't. I thought that was fishy, so I called, and they said that they did (strike 1). I then prescribed the medication for one of my homeless patients who is in a wheelchair and cannot pick up their prescriptions. We called and they told us that they now were not able to fill the prescription. I went to the pharmacy to inquire why they are unable to fill a routine prescription. They told me that they didn't want to fill the prescription. I am the provider, I prescribed the medication. They didn't have a reason, just that they didn't want to. I asked if it was because my patient is homeless. They didn't answer. I asked if I, or my wife brought in a prescription for the exact same medication would they fill it then? They said "YES"! I have never experienced such prejudice in my entire medical career. This pharmacy is not treating the community with equality, they are judging the patient by their looks and by their "status". If they are willing to refuse medical care to patients based on whether they are homeless, what other prejudices are they using to cloud their medical judgment, and how many other patients have suffered in silence. read more

DON 'T DO IT!!! If I could give them zero stars, I would. Every single interaction with the staff there has been super unprofessional and downright rude and nasty. Finally, after two months of dealing with their poor dispositions, I decided to have all of my medication switched to another pharmacy. When I told the woman at the new pharmacy where I was transferring from, she said, "I don't know how ANYONE uses that pharmacy, they have been so difficult to work with and are always rude!", therefore reinforcing my decision to switch. Sometimes when you read the negative reviews for different places you decide some of them are hyperbolic and decide to give the place a chance anyway. Take a gamble. Well, the gamble failed. Please don't make that mistake here. The reviews are not hyperbolic and they aren't worth giving a chance. They truly are a terrible pharmacy. What pharmacy in 2023 doesn't notify you that they received your script from the doctors and that they filled it? Especially for medicine that is in such high demand and low supply across the nation and especially in the state of California. Then when you call to figure out what happened they try and absolve themselves of responsibility and claim it's the doctor's office that's supposed to notify you that the medicine has been filled (or that the script was sent). That's not my experience at all. What century do they think this is? Do you want me to send a letter via the post office too as a means of communicating? Ridiculous. My doctor gave me the choice between two pharmacies, and I picked Allen reluctantly after reading the reviews. 1. They kept losing my prescriptions (3 out of the 5 times I used their services). Very unnerving when you're dealing with controlled substances. They would tell me that they had not received the prescription from my doctor, yet, the insurance portal showed as billed. How do you fill a prescription you have never received?? 2. They don't call you to let you know that your prescription has been received or filled. 3. They don't call you to let you know that your refills have run out, or call your doctor to request a new prescription. 4. Unpleasant and incompetent doesn't begin to describe their staff. I got a new prescription from my doctor and could wait for out to be delivered in the mail so i specifically called to request delivery same day and asked what the time frame was. I had a whole conversation with a lady about what the situation was and I was told the delivery would b 6 pm or later. I changed my plans to make sure and be home in the time window. I waited from 6-10 and finally went to sleep since they didn't bother showing up. Now it's day 2 and i drove all the way from el cajon to downtown to find out what's up. One star because since I moved into my new place this pharmacy has lost my meds, said that I had received them when I did not, the delivery driver on my route is too lazy to bring them to my door or wait for me to have someone assist him in opening the front door, so he has on multiple occasions been the reason for all of these things. I had to file a complaint today; which really takes a lot for me to do; with the California department of consumer affairs and now have to follow through because my medications are so necessary because I'm less than 60 days out of brain surgery and I'm not getting help from their supervisors and their pharmacist today (named Reid) did not take my complaint seriously about his driver. saying That he can't really do anything because they contract out their drivers and the supervisors that look after them. So does that mean my medication is in the hands of an irresponsible out-sourced delivery company? At one point They lost my meds for almost a month. This is absolutely unacceptable and now my health has been affected by their mishaps. If and when they rectify the situation I will change this post. read more

I haven't had my meds in months n I specifically asked them to call me when to get to the door to deliver they said they would but did not do so they gave me the run around and told me I no longer can have it delivered at all only through mailing or pick up because I didn't answer the door the business they are running is going to lose a lot of business because of there unprofessional unhealthy work environment. Man! How it pains me to update this review negatively!! But I couldn't leave my previous review up without an addendum. So, as you can see from my previous review, I've been using Allen for years without major issues. Sometimes their phones are weird or something isn't taken care of as diligently as it could have. But after today, I really can't trust this place. So, I REALLY trusted this place and honestly, any time I was out of a med, I just waited and it usually came in the mail within a few days. Of course, this is a pretty crucial med that allows me to live like an average person during the day. So the fact that I was out of it, meant that I was pretty much out of commission. Staying up until 3,4 and 5 am and waking up 12 hours later. Often, right before or after they close. So there were a couple of things working against me in this situation. Now, considering these things, you can understand why it took me a week to call them about it. I was a mess and not available during business hours. So I've been out of the med for a week, I call this afternoon at 1pm and I'm like refills? The lady gets my info and says 'Oh! We faxed over a request to your doctor who said that she won't refill your medication without an appt.' So I'm pissed. What kind of doctor denies their patient an important med for a week? My appt with her was today. So I come in to my doctors appt guns blazing. Like how could you do this? Etc etc. Then my doctor calmly lets me know that they sometimes don't use the fax number that they should (my doctors office has two buildings, so this was a very logical explanation) and to not rely on what they say regarding refills. She would NEVER let a patient go without meds before an appt. So I'm like okay. Simple mix up. She gives me the correct fax number. So I literally leave my appt, walk straight to my car and call Allen. I let them know I'm calling to make sure they have the correct one fax. A new lady looks up my info and very staunchly says "Oh. We never fax your doctor. Per her instructions. You can only ask for refills at your appt". I said "So, you've never ever faxed her?" She says "Nope!" To which I reply "That's funny because I talked to someone 4 hours ago who told me something completely different." Then I tell her what I was told. She quickly snapped back "Idk who you talked to earlier, but we've never faxed your doctor". I was in a good mood so although this lady is giving me a little attitude, I'm thinking maybe I came at her wrong. I said "Listen, I swear I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just trying to figure out what's going on." What I should have said was "What's your name and put me on with your mgr". So we end the call and then I start thinking. This isn't the first time they've said they've faxed her. So, someone is lying and I'm not happy about it. Because this is my health and not my lunch order, it's pretty important that I'm in the know on what's going on. Like I mentioned earlier, the second woman I spoke with was not apologetic at ALL and didn't seem bothered I had been completely lied to. Either way, whether it was the first or second girl lying, I trust this place about zero. I've worked on the phones for many years, so I often don't take the assertion I need to when talking to these people. Because I know what it's like working on the phones. All you're doing is reading the information in front of you. Don't shoot the messenger. My point is, could I have been more thorough and stuck up for myself more? Sure! But I shouldn't have to. In the end, I will utilize them until I find a more appropriate solution. But, don't trust these people. Keep in constant contact with your doctor. Even if the person on the phone is rushing you, get all the answers to your questions. Take names, dates and times and once again, double check with your doctor. The mailing function is nice, but not when they decide to stop doing it. If you're reading this and looking for an alternative, message me and I'll let you know what I've found. We generally like this pharmacy. The drivers are great, home delivery is a great convenience. Unfortunately their communication is non-existent. Our Dr prescribed plaxlovid, a COVID treatment, and rather than contacting us to let us know that they don't dispense it, they just ignored it. Following up my previous review, after hours of frustration trying to get extremely rude & insensitive Karina to do her job, I finally asked for the pharmacist. I was told he was on the phone calling my old pharmacy that rude Karina wouldn't call. She told me I had to do it, flat out refusing. Of course, when I called the other pharmacy they said they needed Allen Pharmacy to call. Just as I told rude Karina, Allen needed to call. Karina wasted a good hour of my time bouncing me back from pharmacy to pharmacy when it could add should have been an easy, quick transaction. Btw, this began when I called for a refill the week before. My doc said a refill was already at my old pharmacy so I just needed to call my new pharmacy, Allen, to have them call to transfer it. Easy peasy, right? Wrong, not when you have to ask Karina to do her job. She said she did call my old pharmacy after I called the week before. She said that they said there was no refill. That was where it ended with Karina service. Didn't bother to call me. Not a thought crossed her mind that the patient might need the medication. Karina has no regard for the patients, she doesn't give a sh*t about any of them. She acts like she's pissed off at you for giving her work to do. I can't understand why any place of business would employ such an obviously uncaring, rude person, especially in the healthcare industry. I'm guessing she's related to the owner?? I guarantee Allen loses many customers due to Karina. If I didn't need delivery, I would take my business elsewhere. I'm serious. I was so stressed after dealing with Karina I had a headache for most of the night. Thankfully, my prescription was delivered about an hour after my last call requesting to speak to the pharmacist. So kudos to the pharmacist. This could have been an easy task, but it ruined my day. I will not talk to Karina again. I will request to speak with someone else, anyone else. Not sure what was going on but there were various kids and homeless looking people on the floor with various prescriptions and medication bags all over the place. I walked in and was only told to wait outside. Nobody had any form of uniform or name tags on anyone. Seemed like some huge drug deal scheme was going on in there. Allen's is an amazing from their drivers to their staff. Unfortunately our insurance and doctors dont always get it right and anger is directed to people that are doing there jobs. When medication is being tampered with, pharmacists are being tasked with having to be extra diligent for our safety. Allen's has highly trained staff and takes great time in making sure everything is done right.
