I haven't been able to visit this restaurant in several years, but I recommend them for small group reservations and food. We used to regularly make reservations for holidays and they had a WONDERFUL buffet with lovely ice sculptures. It felt so special. Regarding Ambiance, it can get a bit loud and crowded, but the staff do their best and a little compassion for others makes for a WONDERFUL experience. Lastly, they have lovely grounds that can be seen through the floor to ceiling windows. There is a path that one can walk after the meal to enjoy the greenery. P.S. Ok - there was a time (in the days of the spinning salad) when this was a legit 4* resteraunt. Yes these days are past but there are still some good meals to be had from the old girl. The ambiance is dated for sure however if you are a Hilton Diamond member and travel this meal comes with a $15 discount so the value is solid. The menu is respectable and if you want bar food (ask for the dinner menu at the bar) the pizza and burgers are covered by the discount. For $26 ($11 after discount!) I would definitely order this again. The allgauers salad is a pear, cranberry, walnut vinaigrette with a tart sweet and sour to it- very good! The chicken breast was cooked moist and the spinach/artichoke spread was a fine compliment. The orzo was cooked perfectly and a great compliment. The veggies needed some seasoning but properly crispy and adequate. It's a 3 star meal (above average) that gets a 4th star for value after discount and convenience attached to the hotel. read more

My cousin and I ate here on Sunday, December 18, 2022. We liked the variety of buffet entrée selections and desserts. We love seafood and I was quite attracted to the fresh lox with capers on a toasted bagel. I sampled some of the shrimp cocktails, and fresh oysters on the half shell and loved the attentive staff service. Although some of the food was dry, most of the food was fresh and tasty. I was so impressed that I made reservations for my husband and me for Christmas brunch. On Christmas day, after visiting our daughter in the ICU unit at the hospital, we looked forward to an uplifting brunch. I gave it raving reviews due to my experience the week prior. The buffet spread has expanded its selections. I was looking forward to the lox sandwich, but that option was eliminated. The oysters did not taste too fresh, nor was the shrimp cocktail. I had a small sample of everything they offered, even the desserts. Unfortunately, all the dishes were bland, dry, and tasteless. Even the desserts were dry. It was as if everything was prepared the day before and was served on Christmas day. No, we did not complain. The servers did an excellent job. It is not their fault. We honestly thought they were closed. Monday night at 6pm and we were the only table for our entire meal. I didn't even try the check in deal because our server couldn't even split the calamari amongst both of us. The bread was cold which I prefer warmed. The calamari was average at best considering it was chewy and cooked unevenly. Some bites were pretty fishy for calamari. The swordfish was decent but covered in oil. The veggies were a little under cooked as well. The server was friendly but it was just kind of awkward since we were literally the only guests there. read more

Allgauer's is located inside the Chicago/Northbrook Hilton which sits along the banks of the Des Plaines River. It's not a particularly attractive river or river view, but it nicer than a parking lot view. It was the chosen location for a family brunch the day after the wedding of my wife's cousin. THE MEAL Although the restaurant and building have a dated 70's sort of feel, the buffet is very impressive in both selection, cleanliness and presentation. There are four main areas: The first featured an ice sculpture centerpiece surrounded by crab legs, peel & eat shrimp and oysters (on ice) on one side and about 15 different cold salads on the other. Also in this section was a prime rib carving station, a seafood medley pot, a Charcuterie table, sliced meats in gravy, dried fruits as well as mashed potatoes and a steamed vegetable mix. The next area included lots of jams/jellies, breads (such as bagels, toast, croissants & danishes) and a custom omelette station where you place all of your ingredients other than eggs and cheese in a bowl and hand it to the omelette chef. I've not seen that before, but thought it was brilliant because it allows you to control your desired portions as well as ingredients. Across from the omelettes is a large array of goodies from deviled eggs, to bacon & sausage to asparagus to chips & guacamole. By far the most impressive of the items was the whole salmon presentation. Just on the other side of a partition was the final buffet area filled with desserts. Here you will find a number of bite sized tasty treats along with a chocolate fountain complete with marshmallows, fresh strawberries and rice krispies treats. THE SERVICE I'm not sure if it was standard or if it was included just for our brunch group, but we had bottomless mimosas served the entire meal. The servers are nicely dressed and make you feel like you are a guest on some fancy old cruise ship, like the Titanic! LOL FINAL THOUGHTS While the presentation was truly impressive and the food was fantastically fresh and of high quality, the flavor of most items were just okay. It's not a place I would crave to return for another meal, but it was a delightful gathering place for family in a well-lit & spacious setting. I can definitely see why it was the chosen venue for a family brunch. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay the bill! Today being Mother's day, five of us decided on going to Allgauers for brunch. On line the price is normally $75 per person. They raised the price $10 today to $85. The food was OK, but not worth $85. When the bill came they added $85 for a tip. We were good with that, the service was great. They added an extra $17 convience fee. We asked the manager what this was for. He first stated that the fee was split between the servers and the restaurant. When we stated the $85 was already set for the servers, he changed his story. He then stated they had to pay "open table" for reservation service. We told him we didn't go through open table that the reservation was made by phone. He then stated that he couldn't take the charge off. After we insisted he said he would give us a $17 discount. We overheard the same manager tell another customer the charge was for using his credit card. I wonder how many people paid this without knowing it was there. Had a fun company lunch at this "riverfront" restaurant. It's attached to a hotel, might be hard to find if you are here just for the restaurant. We had the buffet company event, but it's usually $13 for the buffet lunch. The place is kind of dated, but nice and clean. You have a nice view of the trees and a canal, but the riverfront advertisement is very misleading. The salads are not the freshest, a couple yellow leafs and a few rotten ones. The mixed salads are slightly better, the oriental chicken one was my favorite out of the bunch. The calamari salad was like rubber, definitely not the best ingredients. There is stuffed chicken and beef slices. They are both ok, nothing special but not bad. The mushroom soup was full of cream and butter, can't taste anything else. The service was good. I made reservations at open table for a Saturday 6/8/2023 at 5:30pm for two. When we arrived there was a sign seat yourself. There was only three other occupied tables in the entire restaurant so finding a seat was not a problem. The waiter gave us the bar menu. When I asked if there was a dinner menu we were informed that the restaurant was not attracting many people so the offering was limited but the chef offered to make us what ever we wanted off the dinner menu. We had crab cakes, salmon and creme brulee which was good. The restaurant needs to be updated. It is old, tired and the windows that overlook the river were dirty. Not a great ambience. Sorry to say we will not be returning. It just isn't what it use to be and it use to be top notch. read more

In elementary school, everybody's favorite day in the cafeteria was french toast stick day. You could pile on a mountain of syrup that would make your dentist cringe, and no one would say anything. Allgauer's Bread Pudding transports you back into a simpler time, a toastier time. Upon just entering the room, the sweet smell of syrup and cinnamon filled the air. It looked wonderful too. It was coated in a sticky syrup that sent me right back to the cafeteria. I thought the dense, gooey, spongy texture would be unappealing, but I discovered that I actually enjoyed it. The taste was exactly like that of french toast, but with a lot of syrup. I can only imagine how it would taste warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. After experiencing the bread pudding, I want to try a brunch at Allgauer's. If this was only a small taste of what to expect, I can't wait to taste more. read more

Hubs and I some coworkers for holiday brunch. Signage was poor. I knew it was in a hotel but if it wasn't for googlemaps telling me that I've arrived, I would have missed it entirely. Folks working here are nice and somewhat attentive. Our server was ok. I think he was a bit overwhelmed by the four tables that were helping themselves to the brunch buffet. His job was to clear plates, serve coffee and oj and champagne. Can't complain about the alcohol situation but the coffee he served was lukewarm. That makes me beyond sad. I forced my husband to take me for coffee after paying over 100 something dollars for brunch. Food was ok. If you're big on seafood and prime rib this place is for you. They do have delicious crab legs but you have to request tools to open the tasty treats. Also, didn't see anything for helping w the mess being created. Thus the reason I only had one crab leg. Still had to get up and wash my hands to continue eating the rest of my meal. Vegetarians probably won't be thrill tho. Not much selection for them. We have been going to the Easter Brunch and the Mother's Day brunch for almost 25 years and this past Easter brunch was GARBAGE! The food was subpar, but they charged us almost $470.00 for 4 people with 1/3 the variety of what they used to serve. I've never made a turkey before, so I was NOT about to try to make entire turkey dinner for the first time under pressure. Panic ensued Monday evening when everywhere I called for a to-go Thanksgiving meal was sold out, but then I called Allgauer's and they took my order. Food was ready at noon as requested when the bf went to pick it up. They provided everything from the bird, sides, gravy, pie, plastic ware, butter, caramel for the apple pie, and whipped cream for the pumpkin pie. We reheated the warm items in the oven when it was time to eat, and everything was delicious. And there were plenty to of leftovers. If we host again, I'll definitely place another order from here. read more

I start by saying my family has gone to the holiday brunch buffet, both Easter and Thanksgiving, for at least five years. While it has always been on the pricy side, we felt it was worth the price considering the food options available and the outstanding service. The experience we had at the Easter buffet in 2022 leaves so much to be desired, both in food and service. The number of food options was reduced considerably, and the items that were supposed to be available were hit or miss as to whether or not the serving dish/steam table pan would be empty, picked over, had food stuck to the bottom of the tray, or would be fresh and appetizing looking. About a third of the hot food trays had been converted to breakfast items from lunch/dinner items. Most of the lunch/dinner hot food items did not look at all appetizing. Who serves mashed potatoes without having gravy available? The serving utensils available were not kept clean and orderly. In many cases it was difficult to use the utensils because of the goop on the handles. People were borrowing utensils from neighboring dishes to find one clean enough to use. I also do not understand why tongs were put out on the dessert cakes. Pieces of cake were dropped on the way to the individual's plate because the tongs were ineffective. Our server was very difficult to find most of the time. When we did see him to make a basic request, it took an unacceptably long time to get simple items like coffee, orange juice, and water. He was very quick with the check though. Not worth the new price of $53 apiece. We won't be back. read more

Generally pretty terrible. I had a friend visiting from Toronto and he was staying at the hotel next door. I saw an online ad for their Friday prime rib and seafood buffet so I thought it would be worth a try. The restaurant itself seems to have been decorated in the late 80's and not updated since. Space was dark and the furniture was well worn. I don't know if it was just our booth but the space was very tight. Our booth was next to a server's station so while we were eating, we had to stare at a pile of dirty dishes and a bucket of crab and lobster shells. The food was entirely forgettable. To be fair, nothing was horrible. Just all really kind of bland. The prime rib was probably the best thing. Fairly tender, but not a lot of seasoning. A little more salt would have been nice. There was some shrimp pasta dish that didn't really taste like much more than pasta with no sauce and some over cooked, tough shrimp pieces. Baked Cod was again overcooked, very dry and tough. For the price we paid ($42 each) I would have expected more. read more

My family and I went here for Easter brunch. Insanely crowded but it's understandable. Parking was already hard enough though and people really parked like jerks in the parking lot. There were at least 5 spots that were un-parkable because there cars were way over the line. Thanks. We had reservations for the buffet but weren't sure which line to go in. My dad and I were in one line and my sister in another. We ended up having to go to her line to get in. Our reservation changed from 5 people to 4, we were still seated right away but we were put at a table that wasn't ready yet and we sat for about 8-10 min without being acknowledged by any waiter. Finally a really nice waiter asked if we were being helped and when we said no he said ok fine I will be! And we cheered The food was incredible. Really fresh and made well. We took advantage of the unlimited mimosas too. This was my first time here and I see why people like it but avoid it on Easter if you don't like crowds. read more

We have eaten brunch here during past major holidays and have NEVER experienced the complete disorganization and chaotic situation we experienced yesterday. You would think they were giving away free food. We waited in line for over 30-45 minutes just to check-in. Food dishes were often empty. They ran out of clean plates repeatedly. Never had a dinner here, but the brunch is a different story. Hubby is off on Sundays three times every 4 months or so and this means brunch time! Food: The selection of brunch at Allgauer's varies week to week, but there are the regular staples we're always happy to see. Delish items like carved roast beef, omlet station, crab legs (not those whimpy cheese Chinese buffet kind either), oysters on the 1/2 shell, peel-on shrimps for shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon and the huge spread of desserts including make your own ice cream sundaes and chocolate fountain with accompaniments. Oh yes, there's breakfast stuff too - waffles, eggs benedict, bacon, eggs, sausages, cereal, etc. It is pricey, but it does come with champagne / mimosas. The only thing I wished is that the price could be set - brunch with champagne and brunch without champagne since I don't drink. Oh well, hubby and friends usually have my share of champagne. Service: We usually go during non-holiday Sundays. Why wait when you can just go a week before or a week later and dine comfortably without waiting patrons glaring at you? I always make reservations and we've never had a problem with being seated right away. The wait staff are all friendly, not "kiss your a$$" friendly, but there when you need that refill and you almost always come back to a cleared off table removing your old plates. We now dine with a 13 month old and they are all very accommodating. I've been told each time not to worry about the Cheerios or puff or roast beef pieces he decides to feed the floor (yes, I do clean up after my child at restaurants too... why leave food bits everywhere?), it happens and they have the sweeper to fix it. That gets top marks in my book! Parking: Never a problem. You can valet, but really? It's not like you're 1,000s of steps from the lot to the front door. I came here for Sunday brunch with 2 of my girlfriends. I don't think I've had a "real" brunch in like 10 years, so I was really looking forward to it. I'd say this place had a nice spread. I was a little scared at first because the place seemed pretty slow. I had anticipated having to wait, even though we'd made reservations about 10 days in advance. We walked right in, and were seated right next to the lovely big windows. The scene is fair, not quite what you'd expect due to the title "On the Waterfront", but it was still nice. The restaurant itself seemed very clean, and it was a large, open space with high ceilings. The wait staff was very attentive in refilling glasses (champagne, OJ, water) and taking away dishes. There was a nice spread for the brunch. Breakfast pastries, muffins, cereal, fruit, eggs, french toast, bacon, sausage, made to order omlettes, eggs benedict, pastas, prime rib, a few other meats and pastas, oysters, crab legs, other seafood, cheesecake, a chocolate fountain, flan, ice-cream.... The place was loaded with goodies!! And it all seemed pretty tasty! Overall, I'd say the place was just a big above average. If you're in the area this place was definitely worth the stop. I wouldn't however, drive out of my way to go here. Friday night seafood buffet was definitely over-hyped and over-priced for us. For $43 each person, they had a lovely ice sculpture with king crab legs and oysters galore and shrimp. However, the crab legs were mediocre sized and usually the meat is meant to be sweet and succulent but I found mine to be a bit on the chewy side. The lobster and oysters were decent. The carved prime rib was dry and very fatty. I had to drench mine in aus jous. They had both regular mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes along with a seafood and pasta salad selection. They also had a whole poached salmon on display. Their soup was supposed to be a seafood vegetable broth but I never did find a piece of seafood in my soup. I might recommend a lobster bisque or clam chowder next time! However, dessert was lovely - the chocolate fountain and pastries galore! Overall, a decent and filling buffet meal but not sure if I would be back anytime soon. Service was a bit spotty and OH - my father found a rubber band in his seafood salad and when he gave it to the server, he acted like that was no big deal. I remember this place from my childhood and it is a lot different now. Their food is fair. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't crazy about it. I got a steak. Very bland, with a lot of veggies on the plate to go with it. They did have fabulous french onion soup though. We went there for my birthday and the waiter was very nice, and I received a beautifully decorated plate of cake after the meal. After we finished, we were told about their Friday Night Seafood and Prime Rib Buffet. We plan to go back and try it, however, it is quite pricey. The place is very elegant and the view is beautiful. it is a romantic place to have a meal. The meal itself is not the reason I would go there, though. read more

My husband and I went to their New Year's Day champagne brunches for many consecutive years. Of course COVID interrupted this. To my recollection, they didn't do it for NY 2023. This year I saw on their website that there would be a brunch on Christmas but it didn't mention anything about Jan. 1. I asked about it on the "Contact Us" area of the website. After almost a week went by with no response, I called the restaurant and left a voice message. I got no response to that either. After a couple days, I thought maybe someone with the hotel could answer my question. We really would prefer their brunch to booking somewhere else; just needed an answer as to if they were doing it. I called at around noon on Dec. 8 and was connected to the Sales Dept and I explained the lack of response I was experiencing. The woman told me her name - I will leave her anonymous on this review. She apologized and said she would get back to me before the end of the day. By about 5:30 pm I had gotten no call back. Finally, sometime in the early evening I got a call from an individual - not the person I had spoken with - He said "I understand you have a question about New Year's Eve." I said that no, I was asking about the Jan. 1 brunch. He sort of hemmed and hawed and then said that "we are focusing on Christmas right now...." without giving me a yes or no. I said, "so I should keep checking?" and he said yes. Now, come on. It doesn't take a restaurant genius to know that if a restaurant is going to put together the supplies and staffing for a holiday that is just 3 weeks away.... they surely would have to have started planning - and certainly would have already decided that it is being done! Had a late dinner here the other night after flying in for some local meetings. The restaurant was empty (on a Monday night). I had the iceberg wedge -- the lettuce was tired, not so bad that you'd consider sending it back, but not fresh and crispy either. I had the Jerk Shrimp after that. The shrimp were pretty good, but the sauce they were served on was straight revolting. I used my rice to wall it off to one side of the plate. Delicious and semi fancy hotel food, yay! The restaurant is pretty big, quite and cute. The food was actually pretty good. My salmon was a little dry...but the mushroom risotto was amazing. The mahi mahi had a strong char grilled flavor, but the pumpkiny trout was amazing! ALSO, the appely crabcake is a must try..so fresh and flavorful and different. Do NOT get the peach cobbler as it was cold and kind of gross (and I rarely..ok never...not finish dessert). BUT the creme brulee was sooo good and creamy, and the key lime pie was good but just tasted store bought. We used to come to this restaurant to celebrate special occasions such as our 57 Anniversary yesterday and hoped for a relaxed nice dinner. However, we were disappointed as to the limited choices on the menu. Although my wife was satisfied with her choice of dry aged sirloin, I was extremely disappointed about the chicken Genovese which was very salty and tasted as if prepared in a microwave oven. For the price charged, we expected a decent dinner but this was absolutely unacceptable. On the positive side, we were pleased with the waiter who demonstrated compassion and understanding. Many of the items previously offered, were eliminated from the current menu. Although we arrived at the restaurant about 6:00 PM on a Sunday, we were the only guests - and that on a Sunday night when, in the past, this place used to be crowded! I had the opportunity to experience both breakfast and dinner at this restaurant. Both experiences were Amazing from the moment I walked up. The hostess was very welcoming and friendly. She directed me to my table and I was expeditiously greeted by the serving staff. DINNER- Shrimp De Jonghe....The Garlic Butter bread crusted Jumbo Sautéed shrimp with grilled asparagus and Bacon Parmesan Risotto was Very delightful. BREAKFAST was served buffet style which had everything I liked. The omelette station was my favorite and it was supplied with bacon, ham, tomatoes, cheese mushrooms, jalapeños, onions, etc etc etc. it was a very good selection of other things as well. I've come here for Mother's Day brunch and the Friday night seafood buffet. Decor is so so... dark wood panel that can pass for a really nice diner. Old clientele so it may remind you of an Alaskan cruise. Food at Mother's Day Brunch - Just nothing screamed out at me as wow Food at Friday night buffet - pretty fresh tasting (but not fresh looking) oysters and king crab legs - I was told the smoked salmon wasn't good and the baked crab shells were all flour so I didn't try them - Prime rib was juicy and warm; pretty generous cut so I had to request them to slice a thinner cut - Very eggy tasting cheesecake Service at the Friday night brunch is alright. Very pleasant waitress but the waiters and busboy just poured the water without looking at the glass until it overflowed. They slammed the utensils on our table. Not attentive at all. Pricing is reasonable but you get what you pay for. read more
