My cousin and I ate here on Sunday, December 18, 2022. We liked the variety of buffet entrée selections and desserts. We love seafood and I was quite attracted to the fresh lox with capers on a toasted bagel. I sampled some of the shrimp cocktails, and fresh oysters on the half shell and loved the attentive staff service. Although some of the food was dry, most of the food was fresh and tasty. I was so impressed that I made reservations for my husband and me for Christmas brunch. On Christmas day, after visiting our daughter in the ICU unit at the hospital, we looked forward to an uplifting brunch. I gave it raving reviews due to my experience the week prior. The buffet spread has expanded its selections. I was looking forward to the lox sandwich, but that option was eliminated. The oysters did not taste too fresh, nor was the shrimp cocktail. I had a small sample of everything they offered, even the desserts. Unfortunately, all the dishes were bland, dry, and tasteless. Even the desserts were dry. It was as if everything was prepared the day before and was served on Christmas day. No, we did not complain. The servers did an excellent job. It is not their fault. However, we drove almost an hour to get here and for the money we spent, we were quite disappointed. I looked like a fool raving about this place. We will never come here ever again.

We honestly thought they were closed. Monday night at 6pm and we were the only table for our entire meal. I didn't even try the check in deal because our server couldn't even split the calamari amongst both of us. The bread was cold which I prefer warmed. The calamari was average at best considering it was chewy and cooked unevenly. Some bites were pretty fishy for calamari. The swordfish was decent but covered in oil. The veggies were a little under cooked as well. The server was friendly but it was just kind of awkward since we were literally the only guests there.

Allgauer's is located inside the Chicago/Northbrook Hilton which sits along the banks of the Des Plaines River. It's not a particularly attractive river or river view, but it nicer than a parking lot view. It was the chosen location for a family brunch the day after the wedding of my wife's cousin. THE MEAL Although the restaurant and building have a dated 70's sort of feel, the buffet is very impressive in both selection, cleanliness and presentation. There are four main areas: The first featured an ice sculpture centerpiece surrounded by crab legs, peel & eat shrimp and oysters (on ice) on one side and about 15 different cold salads on the other. Also in this section was a prime rib carving station, a seafood medley pot, a Charcuterie table, sliced meats in gravy, dried fruits as well as mashed potatoes and a steamed vegetable mix. The next area included lots of jams/jellies, breads (such as bagels, toast, croissants & danishes) and a custom omelette station where you place all of your ingredients other than eggs and cheese in a bowl and hand it to the omelette chef. I've not seen that before, but thought it was brilliant because it allows you to control your desired portions as well as ingredients. Across from the omelettes is a large array of goodies from deviled eggs, to bacon & sausage to asparagus to chips & guacamole. By far the most impressive of the items was the whole salmon presentation. Just on the other side of a partition was the final buffet area filled with desserts. Here you will find a number of bite sized tasty treats along with a chocolate fountain complete with marshmallows, fresh strawberries and rice krispies treats. THE SERVICE I'm not sure if it was standard or if it was included just for our brunch group, but we had bottomless mimosas served the entire meal. The servers are nicely dressed and make you feel like you are a guest on some fancy old cruise ship, like the Titanic! LOL FINAL THOUGHTS While the presentation was truly impressive and the food was fantastically fresh and of high quality, the flavor of most items were just okay. It's not a place I would crave to return for another meal, but it was a delightful gathering place for family in a well-lit & spacious setting. I can definitely see why it was the chosen venue for a family brunch. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay the bill! Based on the cost I overheard for our group, this buffet would probably classify as not worth the money in my book. 2019/91

Had a fun company lunch at this "riverfront" restaurant. It's attached to a hotel, might be hard to find if you are here just for the restaurant. We had the buffet company event, but it's usually $13 for the buffet lunch. The place is kind of dated, but nice and clean. You have a nice view of the trees and a canal, but the riverfront advertisement is very misleading. The salads are not the freshest, a couple yellow leafs and a few rotten ones. The mixed salads are slightly better, the oriental chicken one was my favorite out of the bunch. The calamari salad was like rubber, definitely not the best ingredients. There is stuffed chicken and beef slices. They are both ok, nothing special but not bad. The mushroom soup was full of cream and butter, can't taste anything else. The service was good. Had a present time but can't say I'd come here if it wasn't free.

I stayed at the Hilton just to have a weekend get away and didn't want to go out to eat so I decided to go down the the restaurant, can I just say delicious! I got the red wine braised pot roast which was so good and filling, I also had shrimp bisque which was really good as well. I will have to for there for dinner one evening.

My husband and I wanted a quick and good dinner one Sunday recently, and we picked Grill House after I read some good reviews on Yelp.  Although it's a casual, fast-food-style restaurant, the menu is surprisingly extensive, with a wide variety of healthy Greek dishes. It was definitely helpful to look over their menu online before we visited, because the menu board inside could be a bit overwhelming.  I guess I still looked quite confused when I saw 2 kiosks in front of the ordering counter.  A staff behind the counter offered to help, and I just ordered directly with him.  Later of the evening I discovered that he's the friendly owner Gus. After placing our order at the counter, we were given a table number, and our food was delivered promptly.  I ordered a Chicken Souvlaki Plate ($17.50 at the time, it's now listed online for $18), while my husband ordered a Filet Mignon Souvlaki Plate ($25.50).  Each souvlaki plate included a soup or salad, rice and potato (1 piece), a side of veggies, and pita bread in a paper bag.  It was a generous amount of food! We both chose the lentil soup, which was served piping hot in a nice ceramic bowl with a lid. It was flavorful and comforting. My chicken souvlaki was tender and juicy, never dry, and both the rice and potato were delicious. We were both impressed with the quality and value of the meal. I ordered a lemonade, which is considered a fountain drink ($4.00) and comes with free refills, though I couldn't even finish my first glass. My husband would have ordered a glass of wine if we hadn't had plans afterward, so we were happy to see that Grill House also serves beer and wine for a future visit. The service was another highlight. Everyone was warm and welcoming; a special shout-out to Kevin, who was very attentive and checked in on us several times.  When I was taking photos around the restaurant, the owner Gus greeted me again, which was a nice personal touch. The restaurant itself was bright, clean, and inviting. There's also a pleasant patio for those who prefer to dine outdoors. We will definitely be back to try more dishes from their extensive menu.  I am glad that we finally gave Grill House a try!

On a weekday evening, as expected, the restaurant was not busy.  We were promptly seated at a 4-top table (2 × 2-top) against the right wall, with some other 2-tops on both sides.  Like many reviewers had mentioned, the venue was beautiful, modern and chic. There were 7 tables occupied, including us.  The music that they had was not too loud, just that customers' conversations were amplified by the box shape open dining area.  If we focused enough, we could hear every conversation if we wanted to.  This was obvious when a table of about 6 women got seated at a table near the front door, some of them laughed and talked very loudly.  My husband and I just found it funny and didn't let that bother us.  However, when the restaurant is filled on busier days, it might be a different story. Our server, Patrick, was very nice and attentive.  Since they did not list drinks on their menu except those with alcohol, I asked him about non-alcoholic drinks.  After a brief "discussion", he asked me to leave it to him to make me a drink with mango.  He came up with a beautiful drink that was good and refreshing, with some mango flavor.  It was Virgin Paloma on our receipt for $8, which was reasonable.  He was very polite and checked in on us several times at appropriate times during our dinner.  The pace of the dinner was good, we spent a total of an hour and 15 minutes in the restaurant. Patrick might be the only waiter serving all the tables that evening, though. I also ordered Grilled Octopus ($22) which was very good, tender and flavorful, but was a little too salty to my taste.  The small pita bread wedges were warm and fluffy with some crispy edges, the beet hummus was creamy, and everything was delicious and tasted fresh.  I generously shared 2 little bites of octopus with my husband and I finished the entire plate, it was so good!  My husband really liked his Spiked White Fish ($29) and I shared a bite of that too.  He also had a House Salad for $6, that was a very good value.  He enjoyed a glass of Sauvignon Blanc Crossing ($12) too.  We also shared an order of Crème Brulee ($8), that was creamy and cooked perfectly.  We ordered a takeout order of Rigatoni with Sausage ($23), that was a good portion, and was still delicious and al dente the next day after being microwaved. I am so happy that we found Social Inn - a hidden gem in Plaza del Prado, it's not far from home, with comfortable and beautiful ambiance, excellent service (from Patrick), an attractive menu with enticing food (fresh ingredients and appealing plating), and reasonable prices, we will definitely be back!

Then, we discovered that the McDonald's which had been on this location for decades had permanently closed! What did we do? We visited the Love's Yogurt right next to it instead. The yogurt store was empty at this off-peak time. My husband struck a conversation with Henry, who had been the owner of the store for 18 years. He was very friendly and said that Love's had opened at this location for 38 years! It was the first time that we ever visited! Why? Because when there was a McDonald's right next to a yogurt shop, we chose McDonald's, haha. I looked at their menu board and saw smoothies, and I thought they were $6.50 each. I ordered a Henry's Special Smoothie which included mango, pineapple, coconut with pineapple juice and Love's French Vanilla Yogurt. My husband ordered a small vanilla yogurt for $4.05. The receipt came up to $13.77, with no itemization, just one total amount. Then I politely asked Henry, and found out that Henry's Special was $8.50. Henry's Special did not have a price on the small smoothie menu, and it was not on the wall menu board. When I looked at the picture that I took of the menu board at home, I noticed that all the other smoothies seemed to be originally $6.50, but at some points in time the prices were manually changed with an 8 written over 6, and the one on the top line still looked like a 6 to me from a distance. Forgive my less than perfect vision. I found that kind of funny. Before Henry went inside to prepare my smoothie, he was brushing away some debris on the countertop with his bare hands. I did not see him wearing gloves the entire time. Well, like a Chinese saying, "if you don't see it, just consider it being clean", haha. The Henry's Special was pretty good. It's creamy, sweet but not too sweet, and every sip had coconut bits in it. I just wish that the mango flavor could be a little stronger. Husband said that his yogurt was standard. It was a surprise that they also sell other savory items such as soups, salads, sandwiches, and wraps. The shop was clean and rather nostalgic looking. Henry said that McDonald's next door closed because the landlord increased their rent 2 to 3 folds. He said that they still have 20 months left on their lease, and hope that the rent would not increase too much. Otherwise, he would have to retire too. I hope not.
