Lunch Special: Butter Chicken, Rice, Dal Makhani, Mixed Vegetable Curry, Naan and side of Garlic Naan
    Dante M.

I wanted to try out an Indian Buffet while back in Chicago, and saw some fantastic reviews about Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen in highwood! However, when I got here, I was sadly informed that they were not having the buffet anymore, but my Grandma and I still decided to eat here! I tried ordering the Goat Thali set when I saw it on the menu (because it would be the closest thing to a buffet), but I was yet again informed that they did not have the Thali available, which was really disappointing. My grandma ended up ordering the Lunch special today, which included butter chicken, rice, mixed vegetable curry, dal makhani, naan, and a few raw vegetables. I ordered the lamb biryani, a dish that I had been very interested in trying for a long time. The lunch special was a very good sized meal! Everything was delicious and well flavored, and nothing was too spicy (which made my grandma very happy :) ) The lamb biryani was delicious! You could see the cumin seeds and taste all of the spices that were cooked throughout the rice, and the lamb was super tender that you could break it apart with a fork! It was absolutely delicious. We also ordered a side of garlic naan bread, which was to die for! it was so soft, and it paired perfectly with all of the dishes! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to tryout Himalayan/Nepalese/Indian food, as the menu is very extensive and there is DEFINITELY something for everyone! The only reason I can't give it 5/5 stars is because I was really hopping for an indian buffet or a thali as there website and menu said, respectfully.

Skipped the buffet and ordered a couple dishes from the menu...the momo was good, a bit on the pricey/small side, but I ain't complaining coz I don't have to drive 20miles to get momo... the chicken 'kebabs' dish was surprisingly moist...I am making mental notes on some other dishes to try next time :) They really need to work on replacing the legacy curryhut stuff from branding perspective...

Honestly would not recommend. I was expecting more from this restaurant since it had pretty good reviews. There are TONS of better restaurants for Indian food, I would not waste your money here. The paneer makhani was loaded w food coloring (hence the extremely bright red color). It tasted diluted - the dish was not creamy or flavorful at all. The garlic naan was surprisingly good. The waiter was difficult to understand (seemed like he was mumbling the entire time) and he didn't check in on us a single time after our food arrived. The vast majority of Indian restaurants serve basmati rice with the curry dish. To our surprise, our curry arrived without rice! We had to hunt down the waiter to order saffron rice and when it arrived we were disappointed again! It had 0 saffron flavor and again it was very obvious food coloring had been used in the rice. To add to this, when we sat down we realized the tablecloth and chairs had stains from previous customers which is quite gross. Lastly, the restaurant's website also states there is a lunch buffet available on the weekend - there was no lunch buffet. All the claims on the website include the food being flavorful, fresh, and authentic - unfortunately, I don't think this restaurant's food was able to display any of these qualities!

I enjoy spicy food, but my husband prefers a moderate level of spice. We were each able to sample sauces that met our needs, and both were very tasteful. More detailed food review to follow below. The decor is simple but the restaurant has nice murals and decor throughout (one small downside: the bathroom doors are frosted glass; while you cannot see into them, some outlines are clearly visible). Service is extremely accommodating and hospitable; we were in a hurry and the waitress sped up our order, which we are thankful for several members of the restaurant staff welcomed us and visited during our dinner to make sure we were enjoying the food and experience. Now on to the food! Amuse bouche: a tasty complementary treat composed of a thin, crispy outer shell filled with potato, chickpea, tamarind, cilantro and spice. Nice start to our meal! Samosas: a foundational Indian appetizer and this one was a hit. The mint chutney is mild and the other two are mildly and moderately spicy; extremely flavorful. The level of spice (not just heat) was perfect. Okra: very, very good. Mild heat and great spice. Crispy and accompanied by fresh tomato and herbs for interesting textures. We saved some to take with us to entice friends to join us next time. Risotto: creamy, flavorful, and comforting. The accompaniments are a special treat, particularly the pickled vegetables and crackers. The chili dal is also a nice touch. Chicken biryani: great flavor and comes baked with something like naan over the top. Great spice and you can adjust the level of heat to taste. My husband chose a moderate level of spice and was very satisfied with the attention to this request. My zero proof cocktail was a special treat, composed of cilantro and other, citrusy flavors. I strongly recommend this new Indian fusion restaurant, which caters to both American and Indian flavor profiles. We will be back, and we will bring friends!

We started with the chicken lollipops. The taste was decent, but apparently the chickens they use are roughly the size of sparrows. Next came the Bang Bang Shrimp. The chef might want to take a field trip to PF Chang's and try their Dynamite Shrimp just to see what the dish is supposed to accomplish. The momos were ordered as appetizers, which I assume means they're intended to arrive before the meal. Ours showed up just as we were finishing our entrées. Maybe they were traveling from Nepal on foot. The goat curry was actually pretty good, which briefly gave us hope. Then the garlic naan arrived and tasted suspiciously like something that had recently completed a successful career at Costco. If they have a tandoor, it's apparently being used for storage. To add to the experience, there was live singing. Unfortunately, the entertainment seemed to receive more attention than the food. My humble suggestion: spend less time rehearsing songs and more time rehearsing recipes. The grand finale? The morning after, both my son and I were dealing with indigestion. Nothing severe, but it was a fitting encore to an already memorable evening. I rarely write negative reviews, but when a restaurant charges premium prices, I expect more than tiny appetizers, delayed food, questionable naan, and a digestive adventure. The biggest mystery of the night remains how this place maintains such a high rating.

The restaurant is clean, bright and inviting. One nice surprise, they have a full bar. Their menu is fairly large. And they were BUSY. They had a line from the back counter all the way through the restaurant of folks either picking up orders (from a prior phone order) or stopping in to order to go. This was nonstop for at least an hour. Saturday night definitely contributed. The food was pretty good. Solid portions, lots of flavor. Of course we ordered Garlic Naan (actually, basil garlic Naan) and it was a good portion and delicious. They only serve one chutney and one curry which I was disappointed by. I have experienced getting a tray of various curries etc. But they were "OK". Had some flavor, but honestly it wasn't flavor-full. My friend said that on prior visits it was better. We also ordered a Mango Lassi (no one had ever tried it so I ordered one so they could try it). It was really good and they loved it as well. We ordered Mango Chicken and Lamb Vindaloo. The chicken was so good and not too sweet. My wife loved it. My Lamb was ok. It was no where near "hot" or spicy which I am used to. It tasted very muted and more like an Indian tomato sauce rather than a true Vindaloo that I'm used to. Our friends meals were lamb and fish and were very good too. My Vindaloo was worth 2.5 to 3 stars but everyone else really liked theirs so I bumped it up to 4. The service was slow, but that was more likely to how busy they were. It wasn't unacceptable, just a bit slower than expected. All in all I would try it again. I would come back try the Chicken Vindaloo and tell them to kick the heat up. There are several dishes I would love to try and will try. But right now my recommendation is a "yes" for those wanting to try this delicious food, but a maybe for experienced Indian food folks that are looking for something more like home :)
