The U-pick experience was fabulous, with a great variety of apples available. We picked both Gala and Honeycrisp apples -- the Honeycrisp were a clear fan favorite: crisp, juicy, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweetness. The Galas were equally delightful -- did you know they're a cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd's Orange Red? Originally developed in New Zealand in 1934, they've definitely earned their reputation as the ideal lunchbox apple with their sweet and mild flavor. Pick-your-own runs from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily, and the weather couldn't have been better for it. Afterward, we stopped into the farm store (open until 6 PM daily) and were impressed by the variety of apples and other local goods available. To top it off, we grabbed a cider donut (delicious, of course!) and checked out the newly rebuilt cidery and brewery. The space is spacious, modern, and very welcoming -- clearly designed with comfort and community in mind. Staff were friendly and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I went with a glass of carbonated Sangria from a Niskayuna-based winery, Capoccia Wines. I had no idea Niskayuna even had a winery! He really liked their beers and I loved the Sangria - it was so refreshing and fruity. It's super spacious with a bar area and adjoining room with more tables and corn hole. They had signage for a corn hole league that just ended. They also have an attached store with equipment for home brewing. Highly recommend stopping through! The setting is truly remarkable. Located on a 140-acre former hop farm just outside Cooperstown, the property feels more like a Belgian monastery than a brewery. The beautiful buildings, open spaces, and wooded surroundings create an experience that is worth the trip all by itself. The grounds are impeccably maintained and provide a perfect backdrop for enjoying a pint. Having been open since 1997, it's clear that Brewery Ommegang has had decades to refine both its beer and its operation. Everything feels polished, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed.
