Received the owner's contact information (Schaun) via Angi (formerly Angie's list), and scheduled time to meet at the end of the week (Friday morning 8am). 10-15 minutes after 8, I call to see what's the hold up -- there was a scheduling error and they forgot. We set up a follow up the next Monday for 8am. A guy (Aaron) gets sent out and is a bit late (~8:30am), but we review my honey do list in person and he gets started soon after.
At one point he goes to get something from his truck and locks himself out of the building and left his phone inside. Later that same day, he locks his keys in his truck. He breaks into his own car, and eventually returns to work. Before the end of the day, we confirm I would like him to wrap up for the day at 6pm. Additionally we discuss that he will continue the next morning at around the same time, and I ask to confirm "8am like today." I am told he and an additional guy will arrive tomorrow morning to handle a two-person job first thing.
The next day he is nearly 2 hours late (due to a personal emergency which is understandable) and also because he needs to purchase additional materials. This delay was not communicated to me prior to the agreed upon them, and a text would have been sufficient. I didn't find out until I texted or called the owner and the guy 10-15 minute after the agreed upon time again that he wouldn't arrive til 9:35 (he arrived closer to 10 due to traffic and long lines at the store -- which is unfortunate). The second guy doesn't arrive until after 2pm. Aaron takes an additional trip for materials at some point in the day that were not purchased during the first trip to the store.
At lunch, I step out to run errands (I'm moving, and I left to check up on my cat at my old apartment for the day so he doesn't get underfoot with the ongoing repairs). The guy gives me a call while I'm out, and before I hang up I hear "she just keeps adding shit to the fucking list." And other unprofessional language in reference to me (their client) and my to-do list is said inside my condo again, as I'm walking in the door.
They're a handy/repair company. The expectation is they get paid for services rendered, and if I have additional things they can either choose to accept/get paid, or communicate that a job can't be done. If it takes longer, then I will pay. At no point was I informed that something was unreasonable or impossible.
Tasks I requested included:
- Painting my office (I purchased the paint)
- Sanding a bit off doors that dragged on carpet
- Replacing the hose on the washing machine
- Installing shelves/curtain rods
- Hanging up art
- Moving furniture
- Adjusting/Reaching things in high places, etc
All things I needed help with due to mobility issues, and all things the owner reassured me would not be a problem.
After his rude comments, it was the final straw and I asked that they complete what has been started, and that we end our working relationship there.
I am provided a discount (for my troubles) only to find that the doors that were sanded down did not resolve the "dragging on the carpet issue" (and now appears worse) and there are paint spots on my ceiling. Some paint was dropped onto my carpet as well, but they did clean that up when asked. The rest of the paint job seems fine, they removed the shelf I asked for, and I can't really see the hose replacement -- so I hope that went right.
At this point I'm cutting my losses purely so I don't have to deal with them anymore. read more
