Woah! Who woulda known we had a market like this in Deep South San José! Was looking for pitted dates and treats to enjoy with tea. This market has everything and more. Plenty of parking and the lady working was super nice. Was hoping to find roasted pine nuts but they didn't carry it but she did give me a few recs on where to find them. I just called there - heavy Persian accent a man says "hello hello" - I replied in Persian "Good morning - How are you?" Kept saying Hello - I asked in English "Do you have walnuts?" - He asked "Walnuts?" still in a heavy Persian accent. So I asked in Faris "Do you have walnuts? Gerdo darin agha?" He hung up the phone on me! Rude! This is not the way to treat a customer. This place should not even be in business with an attitude like this. read more

It is managed by 2 kind ladies. They always have fresh stuff when I go in. The walnut is not rancid. Fresh herbs are great.

First & foremost, I want to emphasize that I love to support small businesses. That being said, I was extremely disappointed with my visit here! I wandered into this place after I got a pedicure next door & was excited to see an interesting selection of food, cookware, and other items. +1 star I noticed the shop was staffed by 1 employee at the register....she didn't bother to acknowledge me at all! Look lady, a simple "hi" or "welcome" isn't that hard. I picked up a box of chicken koobideh & went through every aisle, trying to visualize the delicious meal I could make. I had a few questions to ask, but the same lady at the register was STILL ignoring me & chopping it up with some customers. I gave up & figured I would come back to the store at another time. By the time I approached the register, the lady was on the phone. I placed 2 items on the counter & she continued to STAY ON THE PHONE. How f***ing rude!!! I asked her about the small packet of rice seasoning that I was purchasing. In the middle of her conversation on the phone, she told me condescendingly, "it does not come with the rice"...while pointing at the bag. SERIOUSLY?!?! NO SH*T!!! She didn't even answer my question (regarding the kind of rice to use)!!!!!! It's unfortunate that this woman gave such awful service. I would have been a returning customer, but apparently, I was not of importance. Bottom line: this store has a variety of products, but needs to take some tips on customer service. My family and I stumbled upon this market by chance. We found something we were looking for...and more! The owner was engaging and funny, never missing an opportunity to crack a joke. But it was his earnest approach to educating us on Assyrian culture and Middle Eastern foods which won us over. Excellent little business! Extremely clean, warm and friendly owners who will go out of their way to make you happy. Their Turkish coffee is one of a kind. There is a wide variety of baked pastries and breads. My personal favorite is the Afghani Bread! Trust me, you will not regret it. Everyday at noon, the Afghani bread arrives fresh. I must admit, they also have a very fine selection of teas, which consists of a whole aisle by itself. The rice selection is also one of a kind, with my personal favorite being the Reserve. I really liked this place as soon as I walked in. It has a lot of middle eastern influenced food and international options. I was really interested in the yogurt and cheese they had. Really nice little Middle Eastern store. The Afghani bread is great for making pizza, and you can get Middle Eastern ice cream, including saffron and pistachio---yum! This store is small, so there aren't as many varieties of fresh produce that you would find in a larger store---Trinethra has more stuff. There are also some Russian items like cookies, and there is also a nice variety of honey and jams. A convenient place if you're in the area. read more

Very Bad experience. this was my first experience I went and bought a Samovar for $70, two days after I noticed the interior is rusting, I went to the store and talked to the owner "Robert" about the problem. and that was his answer to me : "This is JUST $70 product and it is what it is" Its ridiculous! they did not even try to offer me an exchange. Tea, I mainly come here for tea. For some of the absolute best tea in the Bay Area it's in this market. The owner is a very sweet guy and very knowledgeable about the teas he sells. One brand (Leap Tea) I've never seen anywhere else and it's my all time favorite for earl grey. Such a great little market!!! read more

I went here once to buy some Turkish delights, and the owner was helpful and friendly. When I was paying he said "Nihao" to me and then asked if I was Chinese... I'm not, and stuff like this usually bothers me but he was quick to apologize so it's ok. Pleasant family owned neighborhood market that sells a large variety of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean pantry(dry and preserved) and refrigerated items. I'll be the first to admit I have limited knowledge of the cuisine so a lot of the items were foreign to me, but they were definitely things you dont' find in your normal supermarket. The only other places in the area where I've seen this much Middle Eastern/Mediterranean stuff are in some of the markets along El Camino Real in Santa Clara. The wall of yogurt and other dairy items in the refrigerated case were the most impressive. They make sandwiches behind the counter, displaying a Boar's Head sign. No homemade baked goods but they do have a decent selection of pre-packaged pastries If you live in area and need to get ingredients such as these and don't want to make a trip out to Santa Clara, give this place a visit first. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4, because small family owned businesses deserve to be checked out at least once. read more

Almaden Market is a wonderful family owned business. The owner is absolutely friendly. Each and every family member working there extremely nice and accomadating. Robert makes you feel right at home and very welcomed. After making you an exquisite turkish coffee cup he will tell you a very funny joke and makes your grocery shopping experience a wonderful event. The store is extremely clean and cozy. This was my first time at this store. Though clean and organized, the canned food on the shelves have no expiration date and the owner confirmed that. My wife spotted a bag of Lintels with expiration date 2001. I go to other stores and see expiration dates on such items. I left the store and went to another one in Santa Clara I used to go to and filled the cart of different items that have expiration dates from grains to pickled cucumbers. read more

Great family owned market. They offer many Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean foods that tend to be hard to find elsewhere. The staff is more than helpful, and very pleasant. I find that their produce is usually fresh, but I have been after it has been sitting for a few days, and I had to be more careful in my selection to ensure the highest quality.
