This store is one of my favorite stores to stock up on Eastern European goodies. The store is clean and fully stocked with fresh items (I know expiration dates can be an issue at some of these stores). What sets them apart is their extensive beverage offering, their deli counter, freshly baked cakes (yay for Medovik) and their prepared items such as Olivier, chebureki, galuptsi (cabbage rolls) although they don't give you the sauce, and of course piroshki. The folks working there are courteous and helpful and will gladly suggest and explain the different meats. No tastings at the deli, unfortunately. Prices for regular goods are comparable to nearby stores but their prepared dishes tend to be a bit on the higher side. The good: I was excited to see that there was a Russian store not too far from me. This isn't the largest one I've been to but there aren't many in this city so this is as good as it gets! They have most of everything you might look for including deli meats, cheeses, pastries, cookies, candies, canned foods, alcohol and bread. I tried two of their medovik-type cakes, sour cherry juice and brown kefir from here. The kefir was nice and the flavor reminds me of sour cream. I thought the medovik would be made in house but I am not sure if they are shipped from somewhere else based on the packaging. One of them had a honeybee made of sugar on it while the other was lighter in color and may have been something else besides medovik. I liked the darker one better because it had more flavor. The sour cherry juice was almost $5 and came in a super pretty glass bottle I've never seen before. The bad: The lighter colored medovik-like cake was sweet and lacked a distinguishable flavor. Kalinka, a market that sells Russian/Eastern European food and delicacies. Come here on your own and you could be browsing for an hour looking at different things! Finding parking could be a challenge since you have the Brit, Nick the Greek, and La Vics next door. They have a few designated parking spots right up front but they're always taken. Park a little further and you would be just fine! My bf is Lithuanian and he brought me here to get some beer and goodies from his country. The market is pretty small but they have so much stuff. From vegetables, imported jams, beer, candy, meat, ice cream, pastries, and so much more! The best part? It's really organized despite having so much things in there! They sometimes sell bad products and have bad attitude. Yesterday I bought a piece of a cherry cake there which had a sticker "reduced price". When I looked at it on display, the color was WHITE. To my surprise, after they gave it to me in a container (without showing it to me first) and I tried it in the car (it was night time), I immediately felt something was wrong. The color was all BLACK (made of chocolate syrup) and it tasted terribly sweet (like chemical poison sweet) and was all wet. Not the same type (white) they had on display. I immediately went back inside the store and told them they gave me the wrong product and I want an exchange or refund. They responded "it's the same cake", just on the side of the plate facing customers all the pieces are white, but on the side facing them all the pieces are black (made of chocolate syrup). Instead of apologizing for giving me the wrong product, the sales person argued with me and did absolutely nothing. He had the wrong attitude and made me feel bad. Please note that I don't eat chocolate syrup cakes and normally I would not eat it even for free. I got sick to my stomach after I ate their cake. And I could not get rid of that poisonous sweet taste for many hours, even the next day. I don't know who bakes their cakes, they are not standard. P.S. Please read reviews from other customers in the past who also said they were sold bad moldy foods, spoiled fish and they "Got explosive diarrhea after their food". read more

I've been here a few times, and the service is always great. The staff is always friendly and helpful, happy and willing to answer questions and help you find what you're looking for. They have a wide variety of salmon and vegetable caviar. They also have sturgeon caviar, but you'll have to ask for it since they don't keep it on the floor. Welp,used to shop and spend a lot of money in this store. Not any more!!! As you can see from a picture ,the lacash they sold me became completely covered in mold withing 2 days !!!! Anybody who knows anything about lavash knows it's not supposed to happen, especially within 2 days if the product is fresh. It was my very first time stopping here to buy ingredients for my Russian & Ukrainian cuisines at home. I had chicken kiev on my mind, red borscht soup, frikadeller soup, blintzes, sausages, pierogies, varenyky, etc. Tomato croutons for soups were very good. I also purchased a can of Vegeta seasoning here which goes well with my cooking this week. Very clean, organized, and fully stocked with inventory. I only have great things to say about this place. Excellent Russian/Polish/Greek and other food/grocery selections on the shelves. The old jar of Polish style salad was excellent too. Aisles were narrow, but long. Prices were reasonable during these times. I spent time looking at all the products and details of the origins. There's more than expected. It took me about 30 minutes to browse and decide what to purchase. From sauerkrauts, dumplings, chocolates, wines, croutons, biscuits, bread/pastries, soup bases, sauces, rice, candies, meats, cakes, and much more. The shopping cart/basket resembled the ones used in Europe with the long handle and wheels. I was able to find everything I needed. Hardworking, friendly, and polite staff. I wish they had more food display at the Deli counter, but overall, very satisfied with everything I purchased. By the way, the cheese blintzes were excellent! I was looking for Russian pancakes. I will try the Russian cherry cake someday. Lots of choices! I don't live in the area, but I will definitely be back in the future. Great job here! This eastern Europe grocery store s located like 5 minutes walk from my place. I never knew it was there until yesterday! Being European, I was more than happy to find this place. They've got delicious canned Russian sprats, Bulgarian feta, sausages, dumplings, excellent spicy salami and best of all: freshly baked German bread (they carry black bread as well). They have a small wine and fresh veggies section. Their imported chocolates look also great. Make sure you try the deli section with their imported salami and cheese. This Eastern European grocery/deli/bakery is in the same plaza as yogurtland and scrambles. So far experience has been good. This is the only place that I know that sells paczki's (Polish plum filled donuts) in the South Bay. I went to the store to place an order a few days before Fat Tuesday and good thing I did because they were sold out when we went to pick up our order. What a great little Central/Eastern European market. The first time I visited this place, I came with my Filipina mom. I was looking for Vegeta and Hungarian Paprika to make Goulash for the Hungarian. I wanted to make it as authentic as an Asian girl can make it. It's quite daunting to cook a cuisine you're not familiar with to a person who is native to that cuisine. I found Kalinka through my Yelp app and I knew exactly where the location was. It's right in between Britannia Arms and La Vics on Almaden in South San Jose. When I stepped into the tiny store, I was quite overwhelmed. I couldn't really read or understand any of the items; I didn't know where to start. Fortunately enough the young man behind the counter was super friendly and helpful. He pointed me to the Hungarian ingredients I needed and even assisted with recommending some candies. He also explained the freshly made goods they had behind the counter. They were selling a meat pie of sorts, which sounded delicious. I would have ordered it if I didn't just inhale a breakfast burrito next door. My second visit was even better. I actually took the Hungarian with me and he helped me sort through all the things. I tried this one dessert they had which only consisted of crushed Sunflower seeds and oil. It was remarkable sweet and tasty. The texture though was a little bit different but palatable. He stated that their selection was limited but then again he found some of the items he was craving. The woman behind the counter was amazingly helpful, she showed him all the Hungarian sausages they carried (okay I had to giggle because according to blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/12/penis_size_around_the_world.php - that Hungarians put the HUNG in penis size). They made my day! My mom is German and when Heidi's deli went out of business, I had a hard time finding things that I could give to her that would remind her of home. I dropped in today and the people there were awesome. They immediately sprung into action suggesting items from her homeland. I was floored to find out that they ship in German bread dough to the store and bake it right on site!! The man who was helping me handed me a fresh, warm loaf! How more homey can you get than that?! I bought her some German chocolates, bread, Nutella and herring. Guess what she loved the most? The herring! We'll definitely be back! OMG, the piroshki's (sp)? here are worth the wait! They're the best I've ever had! Only one other place that used to be located on Bascom in S.J could even come close to how good the ones are here! I came there at 5 today and was expecting to find them there behind a display since I did see pics of it on here recently. I was told that it wouldn't be ready until 6. I came there at 5 and was starving, so I bought some borkeas instead which are really good. I think they're only .99 cents each. I got one meat one and one cheese one. They're flaky pastries filled with stuffing. I hardy had anything to eat that day, so I demolished those two items in the car while passing the time listening to the radio and playing with my phone, ugh! It was so good though! They were nice enough to warm them up for me when I asked them to warm them up. This place has a decent selection Eastern European food. There are a lot of different canned items, jams, cookies, chocolates, honey, cheeses, pickled fish, pickled salads, chicken cutlets, freshly made cheesecakes and desserts, meat, potato pancakes, and other stuff there. Anyways, I got a couple of potato piroshki's and a couple of meat ones. I had to wait an additional 15 minutes for it to come out. I got it hot and crispy! For those of you who don't know what a piroshki is, it's like a sugar free donut that['s deep fried. The stuffing usually consists of ground beef, potato's, or mushrooms. Sometimes it has fruit filling in it. They didn't have the apple one there today. I was told they usually make it in the evening, but not every day. It's best to call them and ask them when they'll be out that day or if any are even being made that day It only cost $2.49 each. I had one of those. I couldn't resist eating a whole fresh one to myself! I'm going to have to try to be 90% good with my diet for the rest of this week to make up for my indulgence! I'm so glad that I passed by this place and decided to check it out! Also, I'd like to thank the yelp reviewers who mentioned that they have them here! I'll definitely come back for more of these addictive treats soon! They're so good that I hid them from my husband.
