Recently went to Alobar for a birthday. I have actually been to this restaurant a few times before. The restaurant itself is quite comfortable, with an elegant decor and ambiance. My only problem is that they don't have enough lighting, so it tends to get quite dark (hence my lack of good pictures). The wait staff is accommodating, but they have forgotten to bring side dishes on two separate occasions I have visited. Also, on one occasion they started to clear a plate before we were done with it, which was annoying. The food is quite good. I particularly enjoy the bread, prawns, and mille-feuille dessert (has a nostalgic element for me as it tastes like an elevated Passion Flakie which I would have as a child). I had the lamb saddle as a main on my most recent visit which had good flavour, but was a bit too chewy. Overall, Alobar is a good choice for dinner, but has a few flaws which holds it back. read more

It's gone downhill since it opened. I used to love this spot and it's been a few years since I've been and the wobbly table was a good indication it wasn't same as before. Even at aloette they would have tried to fix the table for us. Dinner was fine, but nothing stellar where I would want to come back. They were polite and nice but never took in consideration my friend was having. Scotch and always want to take the glass away without asking him if he is finished. It's dark in there, I get it but just ask instead of reach in and assume he's finished and you can clear the table. He ordered more than 2 of these and a glass of wine. They can be more professional. The restaurant is very dark so they provide lights to clip to the menu so you can read it. Quite interesting. The food overall was good but not for the prices that they were charging as the prices for all the dishes were very expensive. The wedge salad was good and had lots of blue cheese so I'd you don't like blue cheese, this is not for you. The fish was meaty and made well. The octopus was good. The wagyu was good and they added one extra portion to the 3 pieces so we can try. The hamachi was ok and they also added 2 pieces to the 3 for all to try. Fantastic fantastic fantastic! I wish I could remember everything that we ordered, everything was so good, I could hardly remember to take any photos of my food! The couple of items that I remembered to take a photo for, we split some Wagyu, ordered a side of Broccolini, and had a fantastic frozen berry desert crisp. Everything was cooked fantastically, and we savored every bite. I thought that I would feel crowded at the restaurant, but they handle their space very well. The service was equally exquisite, we had both a waiter and an assistant that made sure that we didn't have a need in the world. I highly recommend making reservations prior to going here because they seem to be popular and certainly deserve it! Made reservations for 5:30pm on a Saturday night and lucky we did. The restaurant isn't too big and at around 6pm there was a line. There is a bar area which made the place more lively, but the tables are small so dinner felt intimate. Tables are so small that they had to bring out another table to fit our food. Came here after dinner solely for drinks and dessert. Located in Yorkville, it's kind of hidden between condos buildings and not that easy to find as a first timer. We arrived with no reservations, just a walk in and was kindly greeted by their servers and brought to table promptly. We came with one purpose only and really was to get a drink and dessert. My friend ordered two rounds of wine and really enjoyed her drink. I got one of their mocktails and absolutely loved it myself as well as it was super refreshing, tangy and delicious. But the real star here that night was their mille feuille dessert. I knew I had to get that once I saw it on their menu. It was flakey, creamy and was beautifully colored pink since there were raspberries in the cream. The dessert is good for sharing since it's a bit much to have it alone. The hostess and servers were all patient and friendly throughout our entire dining experience. We tried a significant part of the menu: Alobar wedge salad - tasty but not really outstanding in my opinion Foie gras parfait - not really to my taste 10oz tenderloin with mushrooms (special) - the steak was high quality Confit Duck pappardelle - my favourite dish and the only outstanding one in my opinion. My good friend had his milestone Bday at Alobar Salon which uses Alobar for the food. It was such a great space There was over 30 people in the group and it was very cozy. It was a 4 course set menu service. First course was the Hokkaido scallop with caviar very fresh and the caviar gave a nice pop of saltiness. Second we had the white truffle risotto. The portion was on the small side and I found the rice a little underdone but it was tasty and they gave a generous shaving of white truffle on top. Third course we had the snake River Sirloin steak with charred onion and brioche bun. I thought the steak was very good .. tender and juicy. Lastly we had the Japanese mango and mascarpone mousse. We were walking on the Cumberland Terrace and unexpectedly came across this famous bar. Walked-in to try their well reputed cocktail before going for meal elsewhere. It was on a Wednesday afternoon around 5pm. We were seated immediately at the bar counter as we requested. The cocktails are amazing! I had the one with banana flavor with formed egg-white topping (Leisure Noise) which had 3 hearts on it :). Another one is citrusy with jalapeno flavor (Western Bay). Michelin stars Alo group is always popular and really hard to book a table. This time we booked Alobar one month ago, and able to try it. Ordered the scallop sashimi, it is fresh and good mixture with the dressing, but very small portion with that particular price point. Main courses we ordered confit duck pasta, and dover sole. The pasta is creamy and the duck meat is very tender, very decent portion. Dover sole is a very popular main, love it alot especially the dressing is using the olive oil. We had two dessert, one is the mille-feuille, and the other is cheesecake. The mille-feuille definitely has a WOW factor, impressive dessert. OMG MUST TRY. We gave Alobar a try for a celebration dinner since it received a Michelin star. Even with high expectations, I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience. I definitely recommend making a reso beforehand since the hostess mentioned they were pretty much booked up on the Saturday we went. FOOD (5/5) We started with the Salmon Crudo, and ordered the Confit Duck Pappardelle and Braised Short Rib as entrees. We ended with the Raspberry Mille Feuille. Note that our visit was in April 2023, so menu may vary seasonally. The Salmon Crudo comes plated a bit messy but my oh my it was probably the best single bite of the whole night. There are 8 meaty cuts of raw salmon served with lemon bits and a dressing that is so umami and rich. Amazing! The Confit Duck Pappardelle is a big bowl of pasta with some sizeable chunks of confit duck. Duck was crispy, seasoned well, and complimented well with the rich and creamy sauce. Pasta was a bit al dente for my personal liking but still a good dish. The Braised Short Rib was super tender and the jus that it is served with is so decadent and makes each bite melt in your mouth. If you love beef, you must try. There is also option to add sides, which if you eat a lot, I would recommend. The Mille Feuille was absolutely stunning to look at and tasted even better. Super flaky pastry sandwiched with various light creams and a tart raspberry jam topped with icing sugar. My goodness this dessert was to die for. We saw the other guests who ordered it also have amazement on their faces on how it looked and tasted. Food was PHENOMENAL. DRINKS (5/5) We ordered a glass of sparkling wine and an espresso martini. Both drinks were absolutely spot on with what was expected. I do wish there was an option for prosecco or champagne by the glass, but nevertheless no complaints. AMBIENCE (4/5) Super modern, classy but not too uppity vibes. Some natural light by the front but toward the back gets a bit dimmer. SERVICE (5/5) Staff were very polite and never made us feel out of place. They provided clean silverware for every new dish and even folded our napkins whenever we stepped away to the bathroom. ACCESSIBILTY (4.5/5) Located in the heart of Yorkville so very easy to access by transit. Driving is more challenging as finding affordable parking in the area is a mission. There is a lot right beside on Cumberland St that has cheaper rates after 6pm. Tucked away in a small courtyard in Yorkville, Alobar is truly a "hidden" gem. I celebrated my birthday with my husband at Alobar this year, I was expecting the food to be good, but even coming in with high expectations, Alobar has exceeded even my wildest imaginations. We started with the Hokkaido sea scallops. I was not as impressed with the scallops at first. There was celery in it and I am not a big fan. The after taste was what got me, so sweet and savory. Despite the portion size looking small, there were 6 scallops in the appetizer, which I found to be a good amount to share amongst two people. The cocktails we had were delicious and definitely alcoholic. I had the duck pappardelle and it was. SO. GOOD. The confit duck was tender and crispy, the noodles had a good al dente chew to it. It was probably the only instance in memory where in finished the pasta before I finished the toppings. Despite duck usually being a bit greasy and gamey, this dish was creamy but not too greasy. I was also very impressed with the portion size, plenty there to fill you up. The sea bream tasted like traditional Chinese "steamed fish" but lighter, I especially liked the shishito peppers they added to the fish. Overall, I loved my time at Alobar, it was slightly expensive but the portion sizes were great. Took a little while to get our drinks and order in they seemed busy. The menu had a good selection of fresh seafood appetizers, and entrées. We ordered the salmon Crudo, Hokkaido scallop appetizer, sea bream entrée, and the fillet mignon special of the day. Seafood is very fresh. Loved the salmon crudo and Hokkaido scallop. We visited this Michelin star restaurant a while back, and enjoyed the food. This bistro style spot serves European and Asian fusion. Upon entry, this restaurant is quite dark with a minimalistic design. We recommend making reservations via online or walking in early. We ordered a few items to share, and were quite happy with our dishes. 1. Foie Gras Parfait One of our absolute favourite items of the night. This dish was flavourful, rich and creamy checking all the right boxes. We enjoyed the touch of sweetness and crunch from the grapes. 2. Salmon Crudo A 4 piece dish topped with charred peppers and lemon. This dish was relatively basic, but more on the saltier side. We enjoyed the freshness of the pieces. 3. Sea Bream Ceviche This dish was visually stunning, and paired with cucumber and cilantro. We found the cucumber a great pair with the ceviche, and also super refreshing. 4. Confit Duck Pappardelle A pasta dish that was filling. The duck was tender and the pasta was cooked just right. 5. Braised Short Rib We weren't huge fans of this dish as we found it underwhelming, but it was still ok. The short rib was soft and the sauce complimented the meat. When a restaurant really lives up to the hype! after our first unpleasant meal, we hopped over to Alo Bar at opening to snag a walk in table. I've been wanting to try it since before they got their Michelin Star. Thankfully they had room for us at the bar. We had: Foie Gras Parfait: this was one of the best foie gras I've literally ever had. Incredibly rich and creamy, with sweetness from fruit and crunchiness from nuts, served with buttery and perfectly toasted bread SOO GOODD! Salmon Crudo: I surprisingly was not a fan of this. I found the salmon to taste fishy and overall was too salty but they substituted it for the sea bream ceviche Sea Bream Ceviche: this was light and refreshing but full of flavor. It was much better than the crudo Truffle Pasta: I'm not usually a pasta person but these noodles were perfectly al dente. And the freshly shaved truffle was to die for. So aromatic, rich and creamy This definitely lived up to the hype. The service was great and the cocktails were all delicious as well. And based on Michelin's criteria, the food should be the only thing that matters. So my overall review is that Alobar excels in service, which is heads and shoulder better than all the bars I have patronized that are not inside a private club. The ambiance was nice. Noise level was just high enough that I could not hear the conversation next table. Food - I agree with other reviewers that apps and sides tasted better than entrees. We enjoyed a cozy and intimate dining experience at this restaurant. I ordered the CONFIT DUCK PAPPARDELLE and absolutely loved it! Alobar Yorkville is a sister restaurant of Alo and Aloette. Alobar is located in a courtyard that can either be accessed through Cumberland or Yorkville Ave. The eatery itself is like more trendier and upscale than their sister restaurant Aloette but not as fine dining as Alo. Due to the pandemic, Alobar Yorkville started a multi-course pickup menu in mid-May for $45 per person. I decided to order a meal to try at home; I had to order about more than a week in advanced (minimum for 2 people) and had to pick a particular pick up time. The Alobar pickup meal does not include dessert, but dessert can be added at an additional cost. Moreover, there were instructions included on how to heat up the items on the menu that required to be eaten hot (for example, the bread, short rib and risotto). It was a nice bonus that the takeout containers could be put in the oven as well. The menu items (listed in order) and overall impressions: - Big eye tuna tartare with watercress, radish, yuzu kosho. Nice light dish to start the meal. Tuna was fresh. - Jumbo green asparagus, pea shoot, parmesan crouton, sherry vinaigrette. This was probably a favourite. The parmesan croutons gave the dish a nice contrast in textures and the mint really tied all the ingredients together. - Wedge salad with wild rice, chive cream, avocado. I've had this many many times. This was as delicious as ever. - Risotto, snap peas, fontina, and mascarpone cheese. Definitely a heavy dish! Creamy and cheesy. - Bread and butter. Can't go wrong with both. Delicious. - Braised short rib, San Marzano tomato, and sweet drop pepper. The short rib was extremely flavourful and tender. Definitely a highlight of the whole meal as well. Overall, this meal was delicious and filling! We were both very full even after the risotto. Great way to support a local business and have delicious food all in the comfort of your own home. Update (June 4th): I ordered Alobar at home for my family (my dad's birthday to be exact) this week. Alobar was nice enough to customize the menu sheet when I had told them it was my dad's birthday. In terms of the food, my family had: - Scallop ceviche, organe, ginger, anaheim pepper, and coriander. - Beets, grapefruit, cashew, basil, and chili. - Beef tartare, charred eggplant, watercress, idiazabal cheese, potato chip. - Risotto, porcini mushroom, parmigiano-reggiano, taleggio. - Bread + butter - Cornish hen, green asparagus, English pea, brown butter, and almond. We tried the 'Alobar at Home' takeaway prix fixe tasting menu consisting of six dishes--Bigeye Tuna Tartare, Burrata Caprese, Prawn Risotto, Bread, Grilled Maitake Mushroom, and Roasted Cornish Hen. To begin the experience, the meal was cleanly and thoughtfully packaged; the presentation was sophisticated for takeaway and photogenic. I appreciated the details of the printed menu that included a Spotify playlist and hashtag for sharing on social media. Each container was labelled with instructions (i.e. warm at 275*) to ensure the food was enjoy at its best. We found that the quantity of food was generous and left the two of us feeling full and satiated. Each dish was exceptional and exceeded my expectations. We started with the Tuna Tartare, which had fresh chunks of tuna, perfectly ripe avocado, julienne cucumbers, sesame seeds, and a little bit of spicy mayo (?) served beside lightly fried puffed rice crackers. The Caprese had a huge portion of creamy Burrata, heirloom tomatoes, basil, and some sort of sweet and savoury chutney (?). These dishes were an except tone to direct the meal with perfectly balanced flavours. The homemade bread with cracked sea salt and whipped butter was very good. The main dishes--Prawn Risotto, Grilled Maitake Mushroom, and Roasted Cornish Hen--were delightfully savoury. The Prawn Risotto, my favourite of the evening, was sinfully buttery and garlicky, where both the prawns and risotto were perfectly prepared. The mushrooms were varied, meaty, and richly flavoured in a light savoury sauce with chunks of seared yet tender Cornish hen (?). The Cornish hen was tender, and served on a bed of bell peppers with pesto. Overall, the meal was exceptional. The greatest compliment may be that before we even finished our plates, we had ordered another 'Alobar at Home' takeaway prix fixe. We look forward to our next Alobar meal. read more

I ordered the 2021 Christmas family feast for 2 people for $240 before tax, and below is what I received and reviews for each. Everything came cold, and there were instructions on how to heat things in the oven. -Cheese and charcuterie: 3? Cheeses, 2 meats, and a variety of sauces. The cheeses looked like they were sloppily ripped by hand or something. Taste was good, but wish there was more meat variety. Also there were only 3 pieces of each meat. -East coast lobster and garlic butter: half a lobster. Delicious, but I mean its lobster and garlic butter, how could it not be -Honey and mustard glazed carrots: Delicious, but nothing special -Potato gratin with gruyere cheese: basically very creamy mashed potatoes topped with breadcrumbs. Very heavy -Baked rigatoni & Parmigiano reggiano: pasta with a cheese sauce. Also very heavy, nothing special imo. Tasted very similar to the potatoes. -Baked short ribs & perigord black truffle: Delicious, but for the price I expected actual truffle shavings. I couldn't taste the truffle at all, and this dish was also extremely heavy. -Bread and butter: Delicious, honestly the best part of the meal lol -Dark chocolate cheesecake with raspberry compote: Very rich and chocolatey. The sauce was a great complement to the cake, we really liked this. I guess for the price I expected more expensive ingredients, or fancier cooking techniques, but honestly most things (minus the bread and cake) tasted like stuff I could cook myself. It was very filling, but mostly because half the food was really heavy... a salad or something would've been nice. read more

Great tasting food here, my favourites were the Chilled Lobster, Salmon Crudo, the perfectly grilled tender Ribeye, finishing with Mille-Feuille. read more
