One of the best fishing trips I have had the pleasure of being on! If you're looking for a great experience, uncrowded and reliable crew this is your place. I've been to a few charters in California and I have to say the Hawaii and Cali vibe are very different. This trip was so mellow and the crew knew what they were doing. We were able to snag quite a few fish and Captain Matt tried his best to land us in the right spot. Even if we wouldn't have caught anything I wouldn't have complained. The whole experience being on that boat was more than enough and just relaxing and waiting on that one tug. The whole crew was friendly, talkative and shared some of their fishing experiences. Such a fantastic experience! Our captain Matty and deck hand Matty were awesome and super professional. It was great that we went to turtle town first to avoid the crowds and had breakfast on the way there. They offer wet suits for rent for super cheap which I recommend to keep warm in the water and they help you float a bit better as well. So a bunch of turtles in turtle town and they supply you with noodles so you can float easier which really helps. Matty even got in the water on a surf board to make sure we were all good. Then off to Molikini! Amazing views - highly recommended to go see for a couple of hours. As soon as we got back to the boat they had lunch waiting for us. Perfect timing. Best thing about this boat - few people! Other charters held up to about 150 people - don't do it. Stick with aloha blue and deal with nice, professional super sweet people who make your day pleasant. All in all a fantastic experience and a great price! The Aloha Blue Charters Bottomfishing is more of a boat ride than fishing. They waste time trolling for fish nearshore where there are none to be caught by trolling. They don't follow through with the statement of keep your catch. The boat caught one nice snapper, prized table fair, and they graciously shared one fillet with 14 paying customers onboard. The rest went to the boat crew after they googled and awed over the fish that was caught. Find a different boat ride or a real fishing charter! read more

I chartered the catamaran HOKUA for a 2-hour sunset cruise on April 6 2019. It was a memorial for my wife, Deanna, and a scattering of her ashes. It was a very good experience! Tara was my phone contact, Nick was the captain and Freddy was his 1st mate. The 40-foot boat was clean the crew was friendly and knowledgeable. Conditions were good; blue sky, smooth boat ride, and Nick knew where to go. I had 10 friends and relatives aboard and we scattered the ashes, along with some rose petals, and we toasted Deanna with champagne--all was super nice--and we even saw a couple of humpback whales! I strongly recommend Aloha Blue Charters (HOKUA, slip 37 in Ma'alea Harbor.) They do daytime stuff, too, like fishing, diving, whale watching, etc. read more

I am giving this 2 stars because I feel I was misled. I thought we were going out fishing with the chance to actually catch fish to eat. This is not the case. Yes you get a line with bait on it and put it in the water but they know the places they take you will only catch little colorful fish. This is not a real fishing trip. They troll out and back and if they catch an Ono, they don't really share it from what others have said. We didn't catch any on our trip, so I can't speak to that first hand. They charge real fishing prices and up charged for recent fuel increases. So I would have expected them to share anything and everything to their paying customers. Captain Larry is either totally incompetent as a fishing captain or he is in on the scam. A 40 foot boat, fish finder, "experienced Captain and crew?", 10-12 baited lines in tropical waters, and not a single fish over 5 inches? There is no excuse. On the positive side, it's a nice boat and the crew are very nice. My kids had fun trying and we have another memory from Hawaii. My kids said they wouldn't want to do it again and I think the company isn't expecting repeat customers. So if you want to take your kids out to try ocean fishing in Hawaii and you feel like burning your hard earned money, then go for it! read more

What an absolute blast! We went on a private charter with Captain Bryan and Matt last Saturday. These two are the best!! They're friendly, funny and very down to earth. There were six in our party and we all had an excellent time. We trolled, went snorkeling and bottom fishing. We enjoyed five hours of open ocean bliss. We lucked out and by chance had Molokini all to ourselves. We felt so special and blessed to experience such a fascinating snorkel spot without the disturbance of another boat or other snorkelers. Almost all of us caught fish and for the ones that didn't, captain Brian and Matt made up for it. We went back to our condo and grilled up a tasty surf and turf meal. What a great time! Went out on Thursday and it was so fun. We caught a lot of fish! We got to learn the names of the fish in Hawaiian. The captains put you on the fish and if they aren't bitting then they move to another spot quickly. Right now there are tons of whales so it's almost like you're on a whale watch too. The crew and captain is what makes the boat so enjoyable and I will keep coming back to these guys when I have the itch to fish! If you're looking for a big party boat with lots of drunk idiots splashing around in the water with mai tais and cheap beer in hand, go someplace else. But... If what you want from a snorkel trip is to swim along a beautiful reef with dozens of varieties of fish and see a TON of turtles, Aloha Blue offers an amazing experience. Here's what sets it apart: 1) The boat is smaller. 30 passengers would fill it completely, but we had about 15 on our tour which was a perfect size. 2) You don't pay for a lot of "excess crap." Like I said, want the big party boat, go elsewhere. The breakfast wasn't fancy and the lunch certainly wasn't gourmet, but both were good and there was plenty for all. The boat was perfectly serviceable and the emphasis was on the gear and the experience rather than the booze. 3) You can pay a little for "excess awesomeness." For $10, you can rent one of the rods they trawl for sportfish with on the way to and from the snorkel sites. Fresh off my salmon fishing triumph in British Columbia, I said what they heck... and about 15 minutes before our return to the cock, I caught a 45+ lb ono... it was amazing fun fighting the fish and getting it up on the deck. Easily the best $10 I spent in Maui. 4) Very nice crew. They made it fun and lighthearted without being cheezy. All in all, it was a GREAT experience. We will definitely do another trip with them next time we're in Maui, and if we can put together enough people, a custom charter. One more note: the Maui Dive Shop across the parking lot from the Aloha Blue slip rents digital cameras for $42 a day that take video. AWESOME INVESTMENT! Terrible! I wish there was a negative star rating! DO NOT use aloha blue. Here's how my trip went. For $90 per person, I was told this is what we would get: "Snorkeling in Molikini, with breakfast and lunch buffet, with unlimited drinks of all types at our open bar! We serve wonderful Mai Thais, and we offer a wide choice of drinks: alcoholic, soda, juice, etc.. We provide snorkeling gear, wet suits and offer Snuba at an additional charge. Our boat has an on board clean-water shower you can use to wash off. We leave at 6:30am, and you will be back just in time for dinner.". Here's what we got: We arrived at 6:15am, we were told to come on board around 6:45. We didn't leave until after 7am. What happened to 6:30 departure? Wet suits are NOT provided; they cost $10 to rent on the boat. Snuba wasn't even an option - it was not on board, it was not offered. Breakfast consisted of two plates that had a little bit of fruit, and *literally* 4 muffins cut into 4's and placed on a plate for us all to share. Each person's buffet was 1/4 of a muffin and a slice of orange or a strawberry. Lunch was loose bread on a plate, with cold cuts, mayo, mustard and tomatoes, along with some sort of macaroni noodles caked in mayo. That is NOT a lunch buffet. No shower on board. A spray hose is NOT a shower. The "bar" was non-existentant. There was literally NO "bar' area/ I asked for a Mai Thai and was told that they dropped the bottle of rum before the trip (bullsh*t!). All they had was Bud light, water, passionfruit juice and iced tea that was tangy (rotten). One look is all it took to realize there was never an open bar, soda or mai thais- it's a classical Bait And Switch! Worst of all, we got ripped off on the time. We spent 1 hour at Molikini, and 1 hour at "turtle town". Turtle town should be called "Tourism Town" because there's no turtles; just tourists. Molikini offers a vast array species to see and snorkel with, however, Aloha Blue takes you to the back side of the crater where there were basically two types of fish and a very limited range of how far they will let you swim. We were bored within 15 minutes. Keep in mind, other tours went to the other parts of the crater and let thier guests swim where ever. This tour was terrible and I do not recommend it. While on Maui we decided to get a little wet and check out the snorkeling at Molokini wildlife preserve. The reef was formed millions of years ago by hot gas that escaped the volcano through a side vent. The resulting crescent shaped island forms a protected reef with 300 foot drops to the sea floor all around. Our tour guide suggested we check out Aloha Blue Charters' Hokua rather than go with one of the larger 100 passenger boats (complete with lines for everything). We're glad we did. The Hokua is a 40' jet powered aluminum catamaran that fits only 35 people for dives. What that means is it's fast, comfortable, and never too crowded. Captain Fish and his crew were very friendly, patient, and helpful. There was a wide variety of activities and gear to choose from, including fishing on the trip there and back. Juicy and I both decided to try the Snuba dive at Molokini. Snuba is basically Scuba on a tether. Rather than have then tank strapped to your back (and spend time getting certified) you breathe through a 20' hose that is attached to a tank floating in a raft above you. While it took some getting used to, it was really fun once you got over the fear of breathing through you mouth underwater. I'm really looking forward to actually going Scuba diving next time. After diving at Molokini we ate lunch on our way to Turtle Town. It's as cool as it sounds. There's a place between Molokini and Big Beach, where Giant Green Sea Turtles come to rest and get serviced. They lie on the bottom of the ocean and get cleaned up by schools of fish. Everyone wins at Turtle Town. We even got to meet the mayor! On our way back the crew offered us beers and more snacks. Too bad we didn't catch any fish for them to cook up for dinner... read more

Possibly one of the best fishing charters I've been on so far. Me and my family fish CA charters quite often and love sport fishing. We go fishing local lakes and shores weekly. We have had our good and our bad trips. But Aloha Blue was probably one of the best, if not the best charter crew we have been on. The boat was a fair size, I think out group had about 15 people on it. Rental equipment is your standard Ugly stick with spinners. Your average fishing vessel for your average size group. But Capt. Matt and crew is what made the trip awesome. I don't know if its just something in the water, or what but everyone in Maui especially these guys were just awesome and the island vibe was real. Made it hard to want to come back home the island was so good to us haha Fishing was ok, part of the game but Matt did his best to land us some fish. And he did, cant blame him tho since we had a few boys bring some bannanas on the boat (Fishermans bad luck if you weren't aware) but once we threw them over board we had some better luck and found some good fish. At the end of the day we went but hanging out and just talking with the crew on the way back in was a blast. I HIGHLY recommend this crew and charter. Great people, great charter. We didn't get a chance to try any other charters on the island but this one blew any of the CA charters out of the water. Hopefully well see you guys again Matt. La even cleaned it for us before we left the boat. Literally stepped off the boat with fish on ice in my hand. I had some fishing experience so really didn't need a whole lot of help. They do like to bring the fish in the boat for you. You reel it in and they pull it in the boat...more of a safety reason. There were 12 fishermen on the boat plus the crew. Oh what fun we had bottom fishing with Captain John and Nick! First, they had a large group cancel leaving us the sole customers. They did not cancel us as four other companies previously have, they kindly took us out as if we had chartered privately and did not demand extra money or reduce the time. Second, they threw out big game lines on our way to and from the bottom fishing sites to give us a chance at that. Third, they made an effort to point out the plentiful whale activity and took us to see the turtles; awesome! Between the two of us, we managed to grab seven fish in less than 2.5 hours of actual fishing... And the best part was that two were edible and they prepped and bagged them for us to grill later at our hotel! Turned into a great adventure and made for one of the best meals we had in Maui! This is a mom n pop op that has no contracts with the cruise ships or other major entities so it was fun to support them and we will again on our next visit! read more

My wife and I had a great cruise aboard the "Hokua" . We booked Jan 18th for a snorkeling trip which turned into snorkeling and an amazing whale watching trip. We had whales jumping all around the boat including a new born learning from Mom. At one point Matt, the Captain, stopped the boat, shut the motor off and let us drift with the whales. The crew was very knowledgeable and always offered interesting information about the area and sea life. They were always making sure we were comfortable, had plenty of refreshments, snacks and were always keeping an eye on us in the water. The day we originally booked, the winds were so high we could barely stand up on the pier. We noticed large boats heading out, most of which turned back with sick guests on board. Capt Matt canceled the trip ( good call!) and we rescheduled to go a couple days later. No wind and flat water, it was beautiful. If you enjoy being with a smaller group of guests and on a more personal level with the crew, this is the trip for you. read more

We had so much fun with Captain Matty and Nick! We booked the excursion last minute in Lahaina the day before while we were trying to decide which place to go with for snorkeling. Candice strongly suggested Aloha Blue Charters as other boats have over 100+ passengers and many of them make you listen to a timeshare presentation (hence the cheap price). Our boat had less than 30 people so the experience was much more intimate and more like a private party! There were all sorts of passengers on board - families, newlyweds, mom/son, sisters, etc. We are so happy we went with this charter company as both captains were both so nice! We were worried that the excursion would be canceled because it was really stormy that day. I hurt my shoulder while body boarding in Kauai a few days before so I was so glad to hear that there were float noodles for the passengers. You don't necessarily need to use them as the flippers are already useful to stay afloat, but I just felt safer that way knowing there's something for me to float on and feel more comfortable. Breakfast included pastries, fruit, and coffee while lunch was a sandwich bar and fresh fruit. There were beer and mai tai's available after the 2nd location: around 10:30ish. Despite the stormy weather, we still saw lots of fishies and turtles at the 2 locations! Matty and Nick were very knowledgeable and they made every passenger feel comfortable. Tips: Nick makes awesome Mai Tai's - if you have him on board, don't forget to order one! There were some passengers that got quite sea sick so my suggestion for those who get nauceous easily is to take some gravel beforehand! Bring an extra T-shirt if you don't want to rent a wet suit. There have been occassions of jellyfish sting incidents and they strongly advised us to wear a shirt while snorkeling just to be safe! There are passengers on board that did rent wet suits from them. We luckily had shirts so we didn't have to rent them. read more

What a score this was. Having never done this I just got plain lucky to have booked our trip with Aloha Blue. We had to drive to 20 minutes or so from L town over to the Harbor at Kahalui, (at the Aquarium) But it was well worth it. This is a much smaller vessel than what you typically see on the water with 150 or more passengers on board, all scrambling to get off the back of the boat. On our trip there were maybe 25 of us. This gives the staff the opportunity to really spend time with the passengers. They provide a continental breakfast which is perfect for the very early morning trip, something in your belly to get you going for the time you will be in the water. Pick up an underwater camera for the trip before you arrive. Depending on the time of year you visit, you may want a wet suit. My first trip was the end of June and the water is great. I was able to stay in the water for about 25 minutes before I got cold. I got out for a while, warmed up and went back in. A few degrees in water temp really changes how much time you can spend in the water. During a March trip, I couldn't get in, it was too cold for me, But for others they made it through it. My daughter did the snuba, she loved it, but she enjoyed the scuba dive the year before more. Snuba is a good alternative if you want the experience without the hassle of certifying. My son, didn't want to go on this excursion, but he had a blast as well. This part of the trip was the most memorable for me. After Molokini, they scoot over to Turtle Town. These creatures are simply magnificent in their size and the way they gracefully glide through the clear waters. There were no other boats while we were there, so we were able to really spread out. My daughter and I just floated, face in the water, very quiet and watched the turtles beneath us for a long time. They keep you fed and Mai Tais are available after your snorkel time! Of all the things I have done on Maui, this was by far my favorite, most relaxing day. A memory to cherish forever! read more

Fantastic! We've been to Hawaii several times and this is the best snorkel trip we have been on. After checking around at several boat companies, and not wanting to snorkel with 100 people who have been partying and drinking, we chose Aloha Blue. The power catamaran holds up to 40 passengers but they limit their numbers. On a Saturday morning at 7am, there were 14 passengers plus the crew of 2. Capt. Mattie and first-mate Nick were very professional, confident in their work, and made the passengers feel very comfortable. We loved every minute of our 5-hr trip, and one hour in the water at Molokini, then one hour at Turtle Town went by really fast. I'm glad we did not choose one of those "express" trips where you only get 30 mins in the water. In Molokini, a humpback whale and her calf joined us in the crater, a very rare occurance. Molokini's waters were crystal clear at 8am and not too many other boats were there yet. It was abundant with fish and coral. No sharks and no jellyfish. Turtle Town was good, too, but I only saw 3 turtles though lots of fish near the coral reef. The water started to get cold so I didn't stay too long. On a December morning, it was a good idea that I had a neoprene shirt to wear, and some others rented the wetsuits that the boat offers for $10. Several guys tried the optional sport-fishing for $10, but no one caught anything and heard that it's not the ideal season for fishing. The food is the usual deli-platters of sandwiches and pasta salad, just fine for a quick lunch. Overall, everyone on the boat had a great time. I highly recommend this trip for someone who wants an uncrowded, mellow ride to Molokini with a nice crew and comfortable boat. read more

We have used Aloha Blue Charters to do a private charter numerous times through out the years when visiting the island. Each time it has been the highlight of the trip for us and any who have been with us! Out of the gate you will talk to Tara to set up your trip. She is the most "Da Kine" person you will ever meet and very knowledgeable about all they have to offer. We usually do a six hour charter with whale watching and snorkeling which is never a let down and you will get awesome pics. Captain Brian & First Mate Shanessa were outstanding, be sure to ask for them. They both know the area and waters and do their best to give you a memorable trip because again they and you are at the mercy of the wild life in the water. When snorkeling Shanessa was in the water first and made everyone comfortable and two of the party were nervous about even going in but Shanessa quickly made that fear go away as she watched over them and gave them the direction they needed . We were face to face with many Turtles and different species of fish while in the water and did I mention we saw three sharks to! The whales did there job and we snapped pics of many different whales and even a couple of full breaches! The bonus though was in between snorkel spots Shanessa was putting numerous lines in the water and we trolled for fish. We have caught reef fish and wahoo in the past but this time the fish Gods shined on us. We landed a Smallbill Sailfish which is a once in a lifetime fish to catch!!!! When we returned to the dock the owner of the company was waiting and filleted the fish for us and we took enough for a meal for ourselves and shared the rest with everyone else. If you're going to do a snorkeling charter, then this is the way to go...smaller boat, think we had maybe 17 people on board. The crew was very nice, food was not gourmet, but then, we did not pay for a dinner/lunch cruise. We got out there and got in an hour of snorkeling before the really big charters came in an disgorged a 120 bodies into the crater, then were off to Turtle Town, again, only had one other small boat to deal with. One other note, that I found to be a positive.... they do just snorkeling, apparently other boats are now pushing the "snuba" gear to make more money, but from what I saw, I'm not sure it's really worth it....not sure the snuba'ers saw any more of the sea turtles than we did, in 60 feet of water, and when they surface, you're already at/near the top if you are snorkeling. At Molokini crater, you aren't really diving under water much anyway....so don't see that the snuba gear as much of an advantage there. read more

I organized a bottom fishing/whale watching private charter for my company as a corporate activity in consort with a conference in Maui at the Grand Wailiea. We heard about Aloha Blue through Lili Crawford at FishMaui.com. On the afternoon of 2/10/14, about 20 of us went on the Hokua, the 40 foot catamaran with the crew of Danielle, Matty and Aaron out of Maalea Harbor. It was a great trip and I highly recommend using the Hokua as an alternative for a larger group of people who can't fit on a traditional 6 person fishing charter and/or folks who want to avoid getting packed onto the whale watching tours with the masses. The boat was a little late departing the dock, but the crew explained the valid reason for it and made sure it was OK with everyone if we returned a little bit later to harbor. The crew did a great job mixing in the whale watching while we traveled South to the bottom fishing sight. They even trolled a few lines to and from. The crew served ample amounts of mai tais, beer, non-alcoholic drinks and catered the event with Hawaiian-style wings, beef skewers, vegetable trays and other food. They focused on safety. Very professional. We had great weather and whale watching was outstanding. The captain narrated the whale behavior and action over the boat's loudspeaker and played music. I liked the viewing platform from the bow, upper tower and stern area (a few rows of seats were in the stern). The boat could have comfortably fit 26 passengers and it was a very smooth ride. It also had a bathroom. My only complaint was that it was a pretty long ride to the reef fishing spot from Maalea, which didn't allow much time to fish once we got there. However, we took our time getting to the spot because of the whale activity and the captain asked us if that was OK. The only reason I mention this is because some fishing enthusiasts might be disappointed during non-whale season. Maybe add an extra hour to your trip. If you are hoping to catch a Marlin, this probably isn't the boat for you. We caught puffer fish, blue line snapper and some other reef fish. The crew filleted the catch. I decided to go on a snorkeling tour with them. They cancelled on me twice! Once the weather was't good and the second time they did not have enough people. I was lucky I could find another company which was great. On top of all that they sent a cancellation email saying I get my refund but maybe takes 30 days!!! I had some other cancelations and everything was refunded within 3 to 5 business days. Now I have to call my credit card company to dispute the transaction. They wasted my time ( cancelled on me twice) and now I have to deal with getting my money back. read more

We went on one of their bottom fishing charters. I was told it would be only 6 people on the boat, but they had 15 people. The captain and Matt were helpful and friendly but their deck hand named "La" was a jerk. I caught two fish, when he pricked his finger on my lure while removing my fish and got pissed and wouldnt look at me. It was an edible fish and met size requirements. He had it in a net and took it to the back of the boat to the cooler, 20 min late he told me that "I" (not la) had lost it....... so I guess he threw it into the ocean to get even with me for his pricked finger.... we had expected to catch a lot of great fish, half the boat didn't catch anything and the other half got to go home with about 1 lb of meat. go with another charter! read more

Snorkeling with ABC was one of the highlights of our trip to Maui! I will be honest that I originally called another spot but they were booked up for the day I wanted to go but what a blessing in disguise! ABC holds less people then the other "major" charters but with this comes a better more personal experience. Aaron was our captain, and from the moment we stepped foot on board he gave us good laughs as well as provided very detailed information about our journey ahead. As we pulled away from the dock I saw the deckhand Joe preparing fishing poles that he ended up trolling on our way to each location. Few minutes later he asks us if anyone would like to get in on the action and I was the first to jump! What a bonus to have at least an opportunity to be fishing while we are on our way to snorkel. For a small fee (10 bucks), you get your name on one of the 5 poles and if nobody else is interested you get them all. Sadly we only got a few bites during transit but that was only part of our journey. Snorkeling Molokini was amazing! Beer and Mai Thais were all included as well! My wife doesn't know how to swim and I was scared to tell them but Joe was so awesome and patient he somehow got my wife in the water and she was kicking around enjoying the wildlife in no time! After about an hour we took off to our second spot to swim with some turtles and omg what an experience! I saw at least 7-8 giant sea turtles and was snorkeling within a few feet of the ones that came up for air. I will never forget the great time I had with these awesome folks! If you go, bring a little extra cash. I paid 10 to get in on he fishing action and another 10 for a wetsuit for the wife. Also dropped a tip on my way off the boat which these guys totally deserved! So I Yelp it and found the Aloha Blue Charter. Email them and got a phone the very next day. Book on trip over the phone for Saturday morning. Hokua 40 ft Cat. Plenty of seating and elbow fishing room. Boat can fish up to 35, I believe but they will take up to 14 anglers. Which was prefect for my wife, that's not a season angler. Captain Ryan, Deckhands Law and Nick was awesome. Very awesome crew, explained what the fishing was going to be for the day. Very helpfully to novice anglers. We trolled out to the bottom fishing grounds, no bit on the trolled. But a day on the water is not a bad day at all. Now the bottom fishing, captain put us on the fish. I'll caught fishes I can check off my list and wifey out fish me too. I wish we would have done a full day trip. My wife and I decided on Maui for our honeymoon. Like any other vacations we have taken, I, myself need to do some sport fishing. Ask around for the best private charter, with the local fishermen and hotel staff. Awesome staff and snorkeling adventure. The crew was truly kind and gracious - genuinely. The snorkeling was great - clear water and lots of fish.
