We booked a whale watching activity at 1pm. There was probable about 10 people in the boat (small group, which I like better). The captain and naturalist were nice, friendly and knowledgeable. We saw a lot of whales, sea turte, and we also heard the whales sing! The captain has a hyrophone and that's when we heard the whales sing. Towards the end of our tour, I heard the whale sounds with just my ear and without the hydrophone. It was a really cool and memorable experience. I highly recommend Maui Reef Adventure. read more

Captain Brad and his crewmate Jade were amazing!! Our Family of 7 (Grandma and Grandpa in their 70's, and 3 kids 8, 12 and 13) hopped aboard the boat and off we went. Captain was knowledgeable about history and kept a story line going through the trip. Our first turtle stop didn't have maby turtles so we headed to his next spot where we found fish, turtles and better visibility. He told us about the island and points of interest as we passed them. Once we got to the backside of the crater he gave a fun, high speed, close up ride that thrilled everyone, especially my kiddos. Snacks and refreshments were served often. They kept a close eye on the group for safety and to ensure we were respecting the habitat. This was grandma and grandpas second trip with them and when they had the opportunity to bring the family, they knew exactly which snorkel tour to book for us It was an absolutely fantastic adventure. Ok. I'll admit I was skeptical when I saw the size of the boat compared to the others going out to molokini . But boy could I not have been more wrong !!! The "REEF EXPLORER " was awesome ! It was def a more personal experience and the boat ride was super fun on its own. We saw a bunch of humpback whales to and from the dive spots !! One even jumped out of the water like 10 feet and did a huge splash lol. It was epic !!! Captain and the first mate were both super nice and helpful. I'd recommend this operation and it was truly one of the best things I've done maybe ever lol. We saw LOTS of wildlife total. Tons of sea turtles, whales ( could even hear whale sound under the water at the dive spots ) angel fish, an eel, puffer fish, ribbon fish , a needlefish, and a decent assortment of other fish and some endangered birds over on Molokini. 10/5 stars. *** this is an honest review and I have not been compensated in any way for writing this *** read more

We had an amazing time watching 10+ seasons turtles at their cleaning station. It was cool to see the fish cleaning the algae off their shells. This chartered boat was smaller which meant less time waiting's for people to get on and off and felt more personal. Jenn taught us how best to put on our snorkel gear along with sharing her recipe for the defogging spray. The seats were comfortable and the breakfast snacks and lunch helped refuel our family. It was exhilirating to see the backside of Molokini Crater and learn a bit of the history from Estaban and Ryan. The day was so clear we could see the big island!! The water was exceptionally clear and the colorful fish were bountiful. Amazing experience for our family of 11 which included 5 kids aged 8 to 14. We just returned from Maui and the highlight of our trip was Maui Reef Adventures whale watching with Garrett and Ryan. I can't say enough positive things about our two captains. They were extremely personable, polite, and respectful to everyone on board. They were great at explaining the behavior of the whales and made sure that everyone on board was comfortable and safe. We received clear instructions on where to park, what time to arrive and what time the boat would leave. There are lots of tour companies using that dock and each group needs to leave by a certain time in order to allow the next tour company to dock. In our case, a family was late. Ryan and Garrett contacted their company who got in touch with the family and let us know their ETA. Ryan and Garrett pulled the boat over to an adjacent slip that wasn't being used and waited for the family. In the end, we were only delayed by a couple of minutes, but I think it is important to share that Maui Reef Adventures went above and beyond to contact and wait for a party that hadn't arrived at the scheduled time. As far as the whale watch, it was a once in a lifetime experience. We saw so many whales! Ryan and Garrett stopped the boat a good distance from the a group of whales and we watched as they came to the surface and dove down. The next thing we knew, a whale swam towards us and directly under our boat. It was absolutely amazing! It was a windy day but the boat was stable and not rocky. The seats were comfortable and it was easy to move around. The next time we visit Maui, we will most definitely book a trip with Maui Reef Adventures. read more

We did the Moloka'ai crater boat tour with them, and it was such an organized, friendly service which we got packaged lunches, sanitized snorkel equipment, and friendly pointers on where to go snorkeling. So many tropical fish and green sea turtles. We even got to see a small shark! I didn't expect this tour to be my top choice in Maui. But hands down, it was my favorite activity, taking their 4-hour Molokini Crater snorkeling tour. What I liked about this tour, vs other snorkeling tours, was the small size of the group and the type of boat. Don't expect luxury yacht. This trip is what they call their "super raft" or think high-speed pontoon boat. They provide light snacks and drinks. Hang on tight. This is a fast ride. You'll beat everyone to the spots, allowing you to enjoy the locations without many others beyond your tour group. I recommend bringing a towel and a waterproof (or water resistant) bag to keep your things. They provide all the gear and expertise along the way. The snorkeling with the sea turtles was truly the trip highlight. I saw at least 2 dozen sea turtles and for some reason, many loved to resurface right underneath me. On the way back, keep your eyes open for whales. The second stop on the snorkeling trip is to Molokini Crater. This is where you'll see the tropical fish like at your local aquarium. I feel like the coral was dying here and not quite as spectacular as other dive spots I've been. But I certainly loved swimming and pointing out my favorite fish. Tour costs $149 for adults (12+) and $129 for children (must be at least 4 years old). read more

We had a great day doing the Molokini crater and turtle town tour. A five hour trip was the perfect amount of time on the water. Provided muffins, chips, granola bars, juice, and coffee. Lunch was turkey sandwiches. Simple and delicious. They offer gluten free bread too! The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and professional. We felt very safe the whole time. These guys know where to find the best turtle spots and fish. They even have someone get in the water with you and point out the fish and turtles! We even saw dolphins and the guides slowed the boat down so we could watch them! The boat is a sort of speed boat/raft that holds around 30 people and goes around 30 MPH. It was the perfect size! They provide snorkels, flippers, and dry bags. Bring your own towels and a light jacket! Highly recommend this tour! read more

Four hour tour to the lovely molokini crater and turtle town! It was a windy day and the ocean was quite choppy, but we still did it! Saw a few turtles at turtle town but visibility wasn't great! Moved onto molokini next for the abundant sea life sanctuary! Current was pretty strong but captain made sure everyone was safe and confident about their swimming in the ocean given the strong winds and current. Also did some whale watching on our way back which was a bonus! Ample snacks and drinks on board and everyone was offered turkey sandwich for lunch which was good. We joined Captain Brad and his crew for the Molokini Crater and turtle cove tour 2 weeks ago. For an 8am departure time, I'd suggest getting there early! Even at 7:30am we found parking at Maalaea Harbor Pier to be tight. There are many boats docked here and perhaps many other tours going on. So try to get there early to avoid the stress of being late to the tour. We eventually got lucky to find a spot near the boat. The reef boat is at the very end of the harbor and you should be able to find it based on photos of the boat online. Ours was bright yellow on the sides. Breakfast was provided on the boat. The best muffins (poppyseed, banana, etc.), apples, and water. Definitely take motion sick medicine for those of you with sensitive stomachs. The boat is on the smaller side and you will feel the waves as we speed along to snorkel destinations. There is a restroom onboard just in case. The crew was friendly and helpful with gear and making sure we stayed safe. We saw 2-3 turtles in the same spot and a few colorful fish while snorkeling. You have the option to wear flippers they provide and grab a noodle to float on. The noodle makes it a lot easier so you're not as tired from treading water. For those who can't swim, you'll get a life jacket to wear and a noodle. So you can also experience snorkeling too! We were warned the currants can be stronger near the Molokini Crater so to try and stay near the boat. After snorkeling, we were provided lunch which was a sandwich, chips, and a drink. I requested a vegetarian meal in advance and got a veggie burger. This was actually pretty good! They make the patties in-house. The chips were a great Hawaiian brand. Water is also available. The wind is pretty high on the ride back so girls tie that hair down and everyone should hold on to their hats and towels. My tips: - Come dressed in your swimwear with a coverup on - Tie down any long hair and hold on to your hats/sunglasses - Bring a towel - Take motion sick meds before getting on the boat and keep extra just in case - Bring reef safe sunscreen - Get to the harbor early to find parking read more

5 stars based on our experience and the Groupon rate. Otherwise it seems a bit pricey. We ended up on this boat when our catamaran trip was cancelled a couple days earlier due to weather and didn't have any other openings before we were to leave for the mainland. Overall that initially upsetting development seemed like good luck when we landed a spot on this boat instead! It is worth noting that the boat is much smaller and less well-equipped than many of the larger companies running catamarans. It's also faster, however, and you get a more personal experience. (We had an extra lucky experience when a group of five backed out last minute). The tour was great, they made a quick stop in one cove where we snorkeled up close and personal with some beautiful sea turtles, then snorkeled on the deep blue and beautiful back side of the Molokini crater, finishing with a snorkel inside the crater as well. A great experience overall and an experience not to be missed while on the island, regardless of what company you choose. Important note: there's no bathroom, so make sure you go before hand, and take it easy on the drinks. Unless of course you're comfortable with the unspoken, large blue "group bathroom" for your #1's... No wet suits are provided, but they are definitely not needed..you would be way too hot. They provide goggles and a snorkel and give the option of flippers..and option you should not turn down in my opinion. Flotation devices (noodles) are available for weak swimmers. For those who may be nervous, it's worth noting that they also take good care of customers, making sure they have what they need and stay comfortable, including checking in on if you're doing OK, come pick you up as needed, etc. Take your Dramamine or Bonine in advance, you can't take it AFTER you are seasick, and keep your eyes vigilantly on the horizon! read more
