I love this local spot! It's been open for years now and every time I come and visit they always recognize me! It's great to know how appreciative they are of their customers! Also, the portions are large and they even offer mini sizes. Pretty great quality of food. Their Mac salad is on point! Love their fried chicken and the Lau Lau!! Don't go here if you want to do group orders and have multiple payments. After ordering with her and letting her know we have multiple orders she still called the cops on one of our employees because he used our credit cards to pay for our food. Besides that the loco moco I had was mediocre at best. Not enough gravy and everything was super dry including the egg. I wasn't sure if I was eating a hamburger patty or a hockey puck. I went here a couple of weeks ago for dinner. I ordered the BBQ chicken plate. My husband ordered the Mixed BBQ plate. Both were delicious! I loved the macaroni salad. Portions were very generous. I liked the decor and the both we sat at was comfy. Restaurant could use some music to liven up the atmosphere and the gal at the front could have been a little more cheerful. I was going to rate this place only 1 star, but the lady who serves you is very nice, so I gave it an additional star. However, you don't go to a restaurant simply for good service. You go for the food. So here goes... I grew up in the Torrance-Gardena area. Anyone from Hawai`i knows these two cities because that's where most people from Hawai`i will end up living if you leave the island. As a consequence, I know my Hawaiian food. There are two King's Hawaiian restaurants in Torrance, while there is only one in Hawai`i. Get my drift? Anyway, I had high hopes for this place since Seaside and Monterey seem to have a good number of Samoans living in the area, so I thought perhaps some islander opened up a restaurant in Salinas. Uh...no, think again. I always order the kalua pork to see how that goes before I get into the lau laus. Traditional Hawaiian food is what I like since I NEVER order Korean from a Hawaiian place. I like my Korean food authentic, garlicky and spicy, not sugary and sweet like the Hawaiians do it. So the kalua pork...it was very bad. Soggy, wet, and tasteless. It sort of reminded me of a Chinese-style dish, but it didn't taste like that either. Shameful. One would never serve this mess of a dish in Gardena. Anyone Hawaiian would hang his head in shame to be associated with that. Also the plate lunch concept of one scoop of mac, two scoops of rice was not executed well here. There was a HUGE scoop of rice with a tasteless scoop of macaroni salad. It doesn't look appetizing, and it was very bland, although Hawaiian macaroni salads aren't known to be very flavorful to begin with. My husband had the Volcano Chicken which I liked better than the kalua pork since the volcano sauce had a little bit of spice to it. It was more sweet than spicy, but at least there was some flavor to it. So I would only order the Volcano Chicken if I ever came back. I dare not try the lau lau. The other fried chicken dishes might be OK, considering that the chicken was crispy and decent. So perhaps if you like fried chicken, this might be the place for you. For $10, you get a huge amount of food. I ended up eating my leftover food for lunch, which is really two smaller meals for $5. If you have a smaller appetite, consider getting the mini plates. As I said, the woman who serves you is very nice. She brought the Styrofoam carry-out dishes, plasticware, and napkins right to our tables. I'm used to eating out of the carry-out containers. It's not weird to do so in a Hawaiian plate lunch place, but I am very disappointed that it wasn't more authentic. I should have ran the other way when I didn't hear sizzling meat on a grill on the other side of the counter and when I heard a microwave/toaster oven "ding!" but I didn't. I was then handed my food (#35 my wife had the #1) in a to go container, even though I was eating in. Rice: well it's rice. No salt here. Macaroni salad: a very alarming grey color with a slight fishy taste. I can only assume it had gone off and immediately spit it out. The pulled pork was only 2.5/5 It just didn't have any real flavor... like it had been sitting in a container for a few days. My wife couldn't get past the fatty meat cuts on the #1 so I traded her. Finally something worth writing about: good sauce! But too little too late. I felt like I had wasted my money! I know how this is supposed to work: you have your meat Qued and it's thrown into the oven to reheat. But my food was nuclear hot, which indicated mircowave (and there was the ding, of course) Anyway, it made me sad I had decided to eat here and left me very hungry. I got the bbq ribs and it was not at all what I expected. It was chewy and fatty and had little bones in the middle, there were no rib bones. They also included mash potatoes but they had shrimp cut up in it, which I do not like. So I didn't even eat the potatoes. I pretty much wasted $8. I would have appreciated it if the clerk told me there was shrimp in the potatoes before I purchased it. I will not go there again. This is more like specialty items that are mainly enjoyed in Hawaii, and not normally by Haoli (and if you don't know who Haoli are, then it's you). If you grew up eating Spam Musubi (think sushi, but with spam instead of fish, yes, the canned pork product Spam), then you'll like this place. It wasn't for me. Spam musubi? I'll pass.
