Since I was traveling solo with a 3- and 6-year-old, I really wanted the pickup experience to be as painless as possible, and Makoa delivered exactly that. On the day of arrival, I received a link with clear instructions. I literally walked out of baggage claim, crossed the street, followed the signs and map, and BOOM! -- the car was right there waiting for us. The car I received was exactly what I booked. The AC was strong, and the tank was full. The map was very easy to use. It was oriented correctly, so you can simply hold your phone upright, walk in the direction shown, and find everything clearly marked. One tip: remember to look UP for the letters marking each parking row. A couple of helpful tips for future renters: - Before returning the car, go to Safeway Fuel if you want to avoid battling the long lines at Costco gas. It's also a straight shot to the airport from there. - When returning to the airport, use "OGG long term / short term parking" in Google Maps. Do not follow the "rental car return" road signs, because those lead to the big rental car companies instead. The return process was also very easy. You just upload a photo of where the car is parked and where you placed the parking ticket, and you're done. I would absolutely use Makoa again the next time we're in Maui.

I will start off by saying that they were nice when I reached out to them via text about the issues of my car, but that is where the positive comments stop. We rented the car at the end of 2025 and got a ripe, think ripe banana as in a bad thing, 2012 car. The car was definitely not a looker, and it was barely a driver. The engine knocked, sometimes you had to crank it twice, it had about 120,000 miles on it, and the chassis had not been lubricated probably since it was new, judging by the mounds and grounds she gave on every little bump that we encountered. They either don't know how to maintain cars or just don't care. We couldn't figure out for the first two days why we only picked up two radio stations, but then figured out there was no antenna on the car. I ended up seeing an irrigation flag at a construction site and took it and stuck it in to where the antenna should be in order to pick up radio stations. The internal battery of the radio was clearly dead as every time we turned off the car, the clock reset to noon and all of the presets go away. The cruise control did work, but the button to turn it on stuck in so when you push the button to turn on the cruise control, you then had to tap it lightly to get it to pop out without repressing the button to turn it off before you could set the cruise control. Halfway through our rental, I thought to myself if I'm having so many issues with this car and it is so poorly maintained, I should probably check the oil, so I checked the oil and found it to be a quart over full. The car had no oil pressure gauge, but I can only imagine it wasn't happy with the situation. The air conditioner did work, which was a good thing however, there were no vents in the back so backseat passengers were either too warm, or the front seat passengers were too cold. It did have Bluetooth for phone calls, but the language on the radio was set to French and it's an audio dialect to pair Bluetooth devices so you sort of had to guess what was going on. Also, they had some sort of film over the radio display that was sun dammaged so you couldn't really see what it was displayed. They were very particular that the car had to be vacuumed before it was delivered back to them, however, it clearly was not vacuumed before I picked it up. I did leave it in better condition than I found it in making sure to vacuum it out so I did not get charged. Also, they had my flight information but drop the car off at the airport the day before so I had to pay almost $30 in parking fees because they didn't want to coordinate their schedule to drop the car off the same day we arrived. The car did get us where we wanted to go, and it was $1000 cheaper than the next cheapest option however I would've gladly spent $1000 if I knew what I was going to get. I am here to tell you spend the extra money. It is absolutely 100% worth it. I am also very doubtful that the airbags have ever been serviced so I questioned the safety of the car. There are many other places to get a much much much much better car. I cannot stress enough do not rent their cars. You will not be happy. You just don't do it.

Second, the website is VERY deceptive in terms of available vehicles. Third, when we arrived, we were picked up in a beat-up van by an unfriendly driver who gave the vibe that we were inconveniencing him because he had to pick us up. When we arrived, we were met by a rather surly gentleman who took us to a SUV with 149,000 miles (I have photographic evidence to prove this) on it and looked like it had been in a demolition derby. We immediately asked for another car and he told us "nothing else was available". Driving the car, I noticed that the brakes were iffy and one of the seat belts was not functioning properly (plus, it was so old that there was no navigation). The family refused to continue driving in this dangerous deathtrap vehicle and I was forced to rent ANOTHER vehicle from Enterprise for the remainder of our vacation. When it was time to return the car, I got a text to return the car with a full tank (despite the fact that we got the car with a half-tank and he verbally told me to return in the same way). I opted to return the car with a full tank because I thought this rental agency would screw me with excess gas charges. When we returned the car, we were told that there was no transportation back to the airport and we were forced to drive this same vehicle to the airport and leave it for them to retrieve. A miserable experience...never again (the big fear was that the car would "die" and strand us by the side of the road). PS-DO NOT believe the website pictures!

The female worker was the only employee who is pleasant to deal with. We received an older 2012 SUV, which was ok, if the car was not a piece of junk. Unfortunately, this car was done, as it was at over 117K mileage. It also had a lot of dents, marks, scratches, etc. Our biggest regret was keeping the rental as it was. The paperwork was already filled out when we got there. We returned the car at the end of our trip. No issues until we got to the parking lot. The engine light turned on. We immediately reported to the female employee. She nodded that the car was 12 years old. It was bound to encounter issues along the way. We received a phone call from the "CEO of operations" after two days. Now, we're told the car died. It won't start. He said it was in "good working condition" prior to the rental. We had two options. We can agree to pay the invoice from the mechanics for the "damages." Or they can file with our car insurance and say the car was totaled. Obviously, we did not agree with either options. It was not comprehensible as to how they can fault us for a crappy car. They should count their lucky stars that the scrap metal ran its course. No back up camera or GPS system. It was completely outdated. It was quite fortunate that no one got hurt or injured with this rental car. Anyhow, he ended the call saying the cars belonged to several "owners". And, they will definitely be in touch to file an insurance claim. Be very cautious if you decide to book with them. I wouldn't trust these scammers at all! It appears they devise these schemes by renting out old junk cars. They are completely aware that 90% of their fleet is not operable. Or it ran its course. Then, they file bogus fraud insurance claims to get new cars. Go with a legit, reputable car rental company!

The most important factors were: - for convenience (you could not ask for an easier location to pick up/drop of the car).... - for price (so much more affordable than any other option...especially appreciated with our weaker Canadian dollar)... - and for AMAZING service by Josie and Paul!!! We also love supporting local and this couple is just wonderful! Yes, the Toyotas are a bit older but they run beautifully, are spacious, and the AC was perfect! Alan was very friendly and knowledgeable about cars and offered us Mazda for $245 for whole week and they don't charge for delivery to the airport so we just been picked up from there for free on our nice and clean Mazda with full tank of gas, which took us all over the island. Then after I got home I saw an additional $165 charge on my Visa. when I called them they said there was a computer glitch and it had to add Hawaii taxes. this was after I recieved a confirmation quote for a lesser amount. if I'd known the final price was going to be $165 more, I would have rented from Kehei which was cheaper. when I spoke to three different people at the rental office they all argued with me and said it wasn't their problem, then after speaking to the manager, she hung up on me. all three were very rude, condescending and short tempered. very unprofessional. Ive been renting here for several years and typically the cars are not great but the price was more reasonable but after this experience, I will not be back.

We had an upgraded vehicle for 8 days (10/29/23-11/6/23) and the total cost was only $218.37 plus the gas we put into it. We asked for a mid-sized car and received an almost new, Ford Escape. We had to ask about the features and they kindly showed us the ins and outs of the vehicle. Again, a great experience.
