So we went thought we'd go by and give it a try. Great decision! The "new" store in Castro Valley is much brighter, cleaner, nicer than the old location. I think the old location had more stuff from Eastern Europe, but this new location seems to have a broader selection, with more stuff from Western Europe and the Middle East. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and helpful - always willing to answer questions and even give tips on how to use the products that they sell. And his recommendations have been great - we asked him about which tahini and zaatar to get (they have many different brands/types of each...) and the ones he recommended have been way tastier than any of the brands that you find in most markets. Especially good was his recommendation on lebnah - he said that the brands they carry are all good, but they have some that they package in-house that was special. I tried it - it was less expensive than the other brands, but was the very best lebnah that I have ever tasted! Richer, creamier, with just the right amount of tang. Wonderful stuff! Anyway, Crossroads is a nice, clean, well-lit place with a great selection of unique products, and friendly, knowledgeable sales staff. Well worth a trip!

This reflected well on management and is worth acknowledging. However, an incident that followed severely disrupted what had been a pleasant morning. I must clearly identify that the staff member involved is the senior female employee from the back department responsible for vegetables senior lady ! This day she was standing their cut pork for customer and employee! she refused to provide proper portions to my employee, who was waiting in line appropriately. Instead, she directed her to take leftover scraps filled with excessive bone fragments. When I calmly asked for clarification, this staff member responded with a cold, impatient, and hostile attitude, demonstrating a complete lack of professionalism and basic respect. My employee feels like homeless need get her food ! As long-term customers and fellow business owners who consistently support your company, we expect fairness and respect, particularly during a festive occasion meant to reflect goodwill. As business operators ourselves, we understand that management culture directly affects reputation. Its a small store with very few products, humble environment, some of the shelves are empty. If you can ignore those things which really didnt bother me or my husband, you can do your shopping and find your African staples to eat. My husband and I noticed that the prices were still high (given the costs to import items) but not nearly as high as Man Must Wak in Oakland which, in my opinion, is really taking advantage of the African community, knowing that there are barely any competetors and they have the monopoly in Oakland.

Mithepheap Market has all the ingredients I need when I'm making my meals. When I'm on the go, I love coming by to pick up some ready to eat foods such as papaya salad and Banh Xeo. I love how they packed the papaya salad with the roasted peanuts on the side. The Banh Xeo comes in 2 pieces and it's separated by banana leaves so it's easy to pull apart. Highly recommend this local favorite, it's such a hidden gem!
