When I first came here years ago it was far more warehouse-like with questionable items way beyond their expiration dates. Now it is a clean grocery store and fun place to shop. I've been coming here for years! My family used to have to go to Berkeley to get rice, dal, or spices (we live in Alameda). I really appreciate the proximity of this location to my mom's house. Over the years, the store has gotten better and better. There's always parking whenever I've gone. It's also right next to Lakeshore, so as a teacher, I really appreciate the 2-for-1 whenever I come here. It is very organized and clean. You can find so many options for rice, flour, snacks, vegetables, frozen food, etc. There are samosas and mithai. Sometimes there are long lines because I think a lot of restaurant owners come here, but it typically goes fast. If you register your phone number, on your fifth visit, you can get a free samosa (it's pretty new, so I haven't been able to enjoy this yet, but my next visit is my fifth one since they started this promotion, so I'm looking forward to it). read more

Ok, fresh, hot, full-sized samosas, $1 each. As if that's it enough, Santos has just about every spice you can imagine for very affordable prices, and in many cases, incredible amounts to buy (e.g., a big Gatorade mix-sized container of ground coriander). Sacks of beans, lentils, etc. But what my son and I are always weak to are the great variety of specialty snacks--several kinds of crispy snack mixtures, many types of cookies and digestive biscuits (including chocolate dipped), and sodas or other bottled drinks. Did not know what to expect when we went to Santos Spice Products. Drove my parents here because she wanted to purchase their Samosas. So, I punched them into my GPS and followed the directions given to me. They are located in a building that looks more like a big warehouse. Sure enough, when you walk through the door, there is a ton of merchandise. They do not sell just spice products. Lots of other grocery products are available too. I did not explore everything that Santos Spice had to offer, but I did see plenty of Indian goodies and snacks. The Samosas we were craving are located on the counter in a little display. They were fresh!! Happy to say that they tasted delicious!! Better than what many restaurants make. I got to taste the number one reason why the family likes coming here. I'll be back too. read more

Finally made it back, having gone once before years ago. I wanted to explore the vast amount and variety of spices they carry........We made some selections and proceeded to the counter to purchase, only to be ignored at the register. The cashier was on the phone as her registered flashed 'register open'. We put our items on the counter and she did not acknowledge us. We stood there a couple of minutes and then decided to collect our items to go to the second register (only two registers open), which had no line but a customer was being waited on. I expected the cashier of the register we left to say something to us for leaving but nothing, she stayed on the phone. We were still not acknowledged so we decided not to spend our money at a place that could care less about us.....We left and I will not go back! read more

Second time coming here. First time was just to check out their place as I've heard a lot about them and bought just a couple of items. I love this spice and herbs specialty store. It's pretty huge for a spice store itself. It's clean and they have everything you ever need for any indian-themed cuisine. Plus the staff are nice and helpful too. They have value-pack for those customers who owns a restaurant and need to buy in bulk. Amazing selections of grains, flours, spices, etc. They also sell fresh samosas for $.75 cents. Pretty good for that price since they are freshly-made. My husband and I love Indian food but we just nornally dine out from time to time at 2-3 of our favorite Indian restaurants close to home. Cooked all this in one day. Lamb curry, Indian butter chicken(makhani), Chicken curry, Veggie curry(cauliflower, brocolli, okra, indian eggplant),Pakora,Tandoori chicken, Basmati rice, Raita, Chutney. Naan bread and Samosa are just store-bought. Took me almost all day. 11am-7pm. Coz first time cooking couple of the dishes. From doing groceries, prep and cooking. Taking pics on the side as well. But good thing I have my ever efficient, fast and hardworking Sous-chef beside me to help clean up. Will come back here again. Highly recommended! read more

I've been going with my family to Santos for ages. It's a wonderful place to get produce and spices. The prices are fair. The products are great, especially their spices. Lastly the service is incredible. The place is run by a family and you definitely get the family treatment. For example my mom needed help deciding on some basmati rice. The clerk called his mom over and she help us pick some rice. If you do go, you should without a doubt pick up one of their fresh samosas. They are $0.75 each. They are incredibly warm, fresh, full of spices. The filling is perfectly fluffy and the entire thing is wrapped up beautifully. I've never had a better samosa ever. read more

This has to be one of my favorite indian shops in the east bay. We have been coming here since I was in a stroller (that was years ago). Their variety of spices, sweets, drinks, snacks and frozen goods is extensive. They have all that you are looking for and so much more. The staff is really nice and helpful and the store is neat and easy to get around. Love to grab the hot samosas at the counter or Dass sweets on the way out. read more

This store is phenomenal for fresh Indian produce. They have all vegetables and condiments - okra, curry leaves, baby eggplant, green chilies, tindli, red onions. Everything's super fresh and we'll organized. Their samosas are great too. Above everything the store folks are so polite and helpful. We wanted to buy a curry leaf plant; the owner helpfully said someone else has already purchased the last one and asked us to return the next day when she would restock for us. When we said we live far away she offered to ask the original purchaser who lives close by if she could wait for a day. We politely declined but the gesture was above and beyond. Unlike most grocery stores, their bill is so clean and descriptive. Incredible customer service. We'll be returning even though the store is an hours drive from our place. read more

As close as this place is to me, and despite the large selection of spices they carry, I think this is my last trip there. The staff is so rude and act as if I dont belong shopping there. Today I asked the price of an unmarked item and she snatched it and started fussing in her native tounge. When I said I didnt want it, she slung it over the counter. Huh? I asked for 2 samosas. I witnessed her using gloves and tongs with others. However, for me there were no gloves, she stopped to swig her water bottle and wiped her nose with the back of her hand. No thank you. When she was done she just threw my receipt in my self bought bag, didnt say thank you for my large purchase and started talking, again in her tounge to the next person. While I was just standing there reaching for my bag. Today was the last straw and I will spend my dollars elsewhere. I don't need to feel prejudiced against AND pay you for it. read more

It's a big, clean, organized store with great choices. You can pretty much find what you are looking for. IT's also available in various sizes makes it convenient for the beginners to expert cooks. Expired products EVERYWHERE. Went in to tell them the puri I bought was expired and they looked at me like I was lying. Then questioned when I bought it. I showed them the receipt and they walked to the shelf to find more expired ones. Not convenient for customers when you buy something only to have to go back to return it (they don't do refunds). I walked in here thinking it was a Mexican owned spice store, man was i wrong. You get the aromas of all the spices and the sound of Indian music playing. This place is definitely the spot if your looking for some Indian food, spices or pots and pans. I came here specifically looking for cardamon spice, which i couldn't find in any store, and with my luck they had it! though they didn't have a small bag, as i only needed a little bit. I ended up walking out the door with a few bags of different nut's (unsalted) and cheap which we feed to our macaw bird. I will for sure come back, and especially tell some friends, since they enjoy Indian food, they might want to try and make it with all the different items they have here. read more

Extensive selection of spices, legumes/beans, nuts, and flours you would use for Indian cooking. Prices seemed reasonable. I didn't notice any organic items, if that's your thing; it feels like a place where smaller Indian corner stores would stock up on spices, or where restaurants can get large bags of ingredients (15 lbs of chapati flour, anyone?), so nothing fancy. They have a few frozen and refrigerated shelves, as well as a small fresh veggie section, but not as extensive as their dried goods. I found some very fresh ginger, my Pataks mango relish, Horlick, tamarind date relish, tried a box of frozen samosas (delish!), and saw some almond meal I can probably use to make macarons. Like any grocery, it is always best to check expiry dates. Checkout (one lady manning an old style cash register) was perfunctory, but polite. Lots of parking. Such a phenomenal spot to pick up spices (in a whole range of packaging sizes), Indian snacks and cookies. I also found fresh curry leaves (some packets are fresher than others, but they exist!). In addition to finding ingredients I'd been searching quite a while for, they also make these amazing savory pastries - we tried their samosas (admittedly, the dough was a little chewy, but the filling was jam packed with spice) and these round pastries that were filled with a slightly sweet but also savory lentil paste. They have a bunch of flours, grains, legumes, and spices used in Indian cooking. They also carry household items, desserts, and produce. The trays of desserts were mostly in front, but didn't have prices on them. Produce didnt look as fresh so I didn't buy much of that. I'm so happy that Santos is located so close to me in San Leandro. The variety of spices and other ingredients you can buy here is staggering. The prices are pretty reasonable and the family that runs this place is so gracious.
